I watched the first episode and I must say I was feeling Jonathan's stress. I hope to learn something from watching all of the stylist. I do have a problem I was hoping someone could help me with. I was doing a color (dark burgundy with a red color kicker) with a partial hilite on top. Now normally this works well with other colors I have done but today when I rinsed and shampooed my client her hilites turned PINK. I used foil for the hilited and they were only near the color right before I rinsed her and just that quick that blonde sucked up the red. I was horrified and my client just laughed. I managed to fix it but that has never happened before. Anyone have any feedback about this? By the way I normally use Socolor cool reds for my color but she had this L'Oreal Feria color she loved and had been using. Against my better judgement-I used it. Could this have been the problem?

Don't worry things like this can happen to the best of us. In my experience I have noticed that the result is much better when I do my color and hilites seperatley. I have made a mistake like this before and let me tell you I was embarressed, but let me just say this- freshly lightened hair becomes so porous that it acts like a sponge and it absorbs everything- so with having a red on the hair along with the hilites I can see where the hilites absorbed the excess color. Just be thankful that your client was as forgiving as they were.

HAHAHA I almost spit my diet coke when he was talking about having bad hair as a kid and now he does it well!!
He's got about the most fraudulent looking paste on hair I have ever seen. Now it really impressed me when they took a shot of him shampooing just to prove it was his, but have you looked at his profile and his hairline goes about half way back on his skull?? Man, that browline is completely incongruous with the rest of his pate. Other than that glaring flaw, I think he is a manly looking type, one that walks through the airport with an aura that makes people turn their heads. Best of luck with that FULL SPEED AHEAD new salon. It's scary when YOUR rear is ON THE LINE for it all. |

Hey there. Yes L'Oreal made a mess. You didn't do anything wrong with the color or the hilite but the red molecules in "store bought" color are often bigger than professional color molecules. For that reason, red especially, doesn't penetrate all the way to the cortex as much as we would like, therefore it sits on the shaft to get rinsed out. When you took off the foil and rinsed, the minute both colors met the extra red was "sucked" into the blonde, and since blonde is light, it holds color. Nothing to worry about. the fact that it turned pink mean that there wasn't enough color in the red to develop the true color so the "pink hilites" probably would have gone back to normal after a few clarifying shampoos. Lesson learned- don't use WalMart color, with Matrix talent! I hope that answered your question. If anyone has any questions fee free to ask.

Heya Kimmieo, about your problem with your hilites turning pink...here is a simple solution...rinse the base color out of the hair while the foils are still in...after the majority or all of your red is rinsed out...then remove the foils from the hair!!....I found out the hard way too!!

I have to agree that's one way to fix that mess. Always remember that the store bought crap doesn't compare to our colors ex.Goldwell true and trusted. Always double process those reds. And Please take your time your clients will love you for it.

So to all of you wonderful stylists out there here is a question to all of you. I am a stylist and I have been for about 4 years. I used to work in a salon in my home town and I had a booming clientele and then I had a hard time with the new owner that purchased my salon. I decided that I never wanted to do hair again and I left. After 6 months I could not live without doing hair and I went on the hunt for the perfect salon, finally I found what I was looking for, but now I am struggling to build up a new clientele. How do I go about this?? The new salon I started working at is wonderful and has a great team of stylists, but I'm the only one that has no clients and I just sit around. HELP!!!

Ok, What I cannot understand is this is suppose to be a "professional" salon. So what is up with the "Revlon" products being used? Revlon is not a professional product but it will make the client out there watching this show think it is. Revlon is a public comsumers product.

Heya Shoegal!!...and I dont mean this in a bad way...but for starters...STOP SITTIN AROUND!!..If there isnt any business that you can accumulate thru networking within your salon...then reach through your existing clients!!..offer them specials for bringing you new clients...HAND OUT THOSE BUSINESS CARDS!!! Offer free haircuts just to get them in your chair....give a business card to every NEW person you come in contact with from your grocery store to your bank to the host at a restaraunt!!...Its not gonna happen overnight but if you do these little things....I PROMISE you, you wont be sittin around!!!
Never give up!! You'll be GREAT!! |

Hey thanks to everyone for all the great advice on the pink hilites. I'm still laughing about that. Anyhow, I noticed your log in name was HairKerr. Is Kerr your last name? That's my maiden name. Hmmmm-could it be that I have maybe found a relative online?

Hey Shoegal-I am in the same boat with ya babe so don't feel down. I worked at a chain salon with a built in clientele and after my manager screaming at me for the third time with a client in her chair, I had enough and walked out. I was also sick of those hours that made you lose your mind. I have been independant for two months now and while a lot of my business is the few walk ins and the occasional shop customer who makes an appt. for anyone who is available (me), I have always looked on the bright side. That bright side for me is while things may be slow at first, I am confident enough in my abilities as a stylist to know that the clients I do WILL return to me. Also I can set my own schedule which leaves the family time I need. I also own a Karaoke business and I now have no scheduling conflicts. Hang in there. It takes time. Post flyers with your specials on them. Maybe advertise a very inexpensive haircut day for the next month say on a particularly slow day. I'd rather do a 10$ wet cut than nothing at all. Good luck to you!

Hey I use socolor in my salon and sometomes it can be the red booster next time rinse the hilites first and put a really thick conditioner on them. If that doesn't work then you can use a product called malibu crystals at the shampoo bowl and it will take the pink out. On the packaging it is for removing minerals and chlorine but has saved me before.
As for using the grocery store color it doesn't help in the fight against diversion or our reputation as professionals. Good Luck Colourdiva |

Hey RobbCarlos,
Thanks for the advice I guess I just have to be patient. The hair business is a tricky one. The only problem is I can't really run many specials because our salon is one of the higher priced salons in my area and my boss is always concerned about lowering the prices at all. I know I am very good and I hope that doesn't sound cocky, but after someone sits in my chair once they always come back. I just need to work on getting more people to just sit down. Thanks so much, take care. Shoegal |

Hi, my name is Steven and I am a full time hair colorist. If I read your post correctly, you foiled in a partial highlight and then a single process color in between the foils? My question to you is, why would you remove the foils of highlighted hair before rinsing all of the single process color off first? Rinsing off the color in between the foils with very cool water and you should never have this problem.

Well I guess I should start by saying that I was terrified of doing color and hilites together for the longest. I became quite comfortable with it and enjoy doing it. I know it was that L'Oreal color with that red booster that did it. I knew better than to use it but this girl brought me her own color and wanted to use that particular one because she had used it before. Even so I have rinsed many color/hilites by removing all of the foils at once-even other reds without this happening so it kinda freaked me out. I shampooed her at least five times and that color kept on shampooing pink so it was a lose lose situation after that. Good advice though- I will try that next time-rinsing separatly. I am thinking of switching from socolor to Redken color fusion or something else. I love socolr's reds but their neutrals are ashy and I don't like anything ashy unless I need to cut red. Suggestions?
