Back to Walmart -- it's a wonder that so many people shop there -- I mean, why? For the love of God, WHY WHY WHY do people shop at that filthy, nasty, greedy store??
I can answer only for myself:
1) Nearest alternative dept store: Target 85 miles away on 2 lane highway = 1.75 hour drive. I know, I know. There are lots of folks on the board who still would drive the 85 miles...but I'm not one of them.
2) Low standards. Heck, the last three times I went into Target I purchased *nothing*, that's right, could not find one thing I had any interest in. I did get a headache, tho, so I guess I didn't leave empty-handed.
3) RE surly staff, who cares? I don't want any help browsing through jumbled merchandise. I usually know exactly what I want and where it is (see prey; kill prey; dash back home to feed young).
4) Don't buy anything there you can get somewhere else. In my town, that includes...well, not a whole lot, but we do have hardware stores. So I never buy tools at Wal Mart.
My daughter goes to college 2 hours north of Kansas City, MO. The only store they have in town is Walmart. They just built a Target about 50 miles away in St. Joseph, but on a college kids budget, she shops, gets her prescriptions, and does just about everything at Walmart. Their store is nice, clean, and they treat their employees right.(she has friends that work there). But they can't combat corporate policies and have to dance around them sometimes.
As much as I hate Walmart, I am hooked on Sam's. Can't find things any cheaper! They even beat Walmart's prices!

My goodness, I haven't heard of Venture in quite a while! I do miss that store. Their clearance wasn't the best, but it was the only store in town for a long time.
Was Venture a midwest thing? Do you remember the orange counters? Reminds me of today's Target! And I remember getting free cookies there -- that was awesome! If your parent paid by credit card, you could get a 'credit card cookie' free of charge! Yum!
Back to Walmart -- it's a wonder that so many people shop there -- I mean, why? For the love of God, WHY WHY WHY do people shop at that filthy, nasty, greedy store??
And their prices aren't all that good. If it is a name brand, Target is just as inexpensive. Ours is dirty, messy, cluttered and at 3am it is just as crowded as at 7pm. It is the store in our area with the most shoplifting trouble. I only go there if it is an absolute emergency (cos Target isn't open 24hrs). Like a humidifier when my daughter was sick. And there are a couple of things that I can only find there. But I stock up so I don't have to go often. And I never go after dark. The parking lot lights hardly ever work and the security guard that roams the lot looks worse than most of the criminals I see on tv. Scary!
Yes, Venture was a midwest thing. The home offices were here in St. Louis and eventually it became a part of May Companies. do miss them.
Are there still Famous Barr stores? I did like them and shopped there all the time.
Yes, for now. but Macy's bought them out and eventually the name Famous Barr will disappear. Should happen within the next year or so.

Do y'all buy men's clothes at Target? Is it good for that? I never know where to go to get good simple shirts (esp short sleeve summer shirts) for a good price. Everytime I look at clothes prices, I slightly wet myself. The last shirt I bought was at Costco (which is a store I love). Still kinda pricey though.

My husband is like a gorilla...all arms & legs. So we have to go to the Tall shop to get his dress shirts. Needles to say, Target shirts never fit him too well. but I do get his Jockey undershirts there. They carry the talls in that. I have gotten shorts there and they fit pretty well.

That's a shame since Macey's is pretty out of date around here. Several years ago I went to Macey's in downtown Atlanta it was a joke. I think there was still merchandise in there from the 50's LOL.
We recenlty got a Norstrom here but I have not been in a shopping mood. I don't like traffic since I no longer have to commute.
I have found shopping on line is the best thing that ever happened for me. Some of my fav places to order from are Coldwater Creek, Saks, Neiman's ( although they will bring things out to my home since I live in the area and used to work for them many decades ago), and a few other places. If I am going shopping in the area I end up at Steinmart a lot too.
We are also fortunate to have a Last Call For Neiman's here in the area and you can get some great buys there is you are willing to spend some time looking. I found a wonderful footstool that had been $500 for only $50, Ferragamo shoes and handbags etc. Don't go often but usually do find a few treasures when I do venture out.

I love capris but they look terrible on me. Im very short, 5` 2`` and a 1/4, lol, and most capris reach my ankles. I end up looking like I am wearing high waters instead of capris.

Well, that brings up another question. What is with men's underwear?? Used to be able to buy reasonably-priced well constructed boxer briefs that held up to repeated washings etc. Now, everything is constructed of 1-ply cotton that shreads after a few washings and flimsy elastic waistbands. Is this true for women's "delicates" too? I think Pampers are constructed better....well, I imagine they are...haven't gone THERE yet! Yet. (Oy! I think I voided my bio diet. It's a buyer's market in ATL, always has been. We don't have the ups & downs the coast markets (and Arizona, NV) have had, but ATL is the size of Delaware -22 counties - so there is always land to build more. If I had my cat on my business card she would be prettier than I am, so I don't want her competition.

In TIm's podacst, he mentions that they are taking the designers "out in the real world of retail" (or something like that). Vincent says something about it needing to be for a "working woman on the cutting edge" I, for one, think the challenge is to design a woman's business suit for Macy's or INC-sort of like the Bana Republic challenge last 2 seasons. Also, there were a couple of lighter prints picked on the yahoo preview. Angela's even has a print she compares to the Empire State building (reminded me of Jay's Chrysler Building dress, to be honest) I also think the teams are interesting:
Robert and Kayne + Vincent
Jeffrey and Alison + Keith
Uli and Bonnie + Bradley
Laura and Michael + Angela
They took 4 of the original 7 pairs and then added one from two remaining pairs (Malan and Katherine were a pair). I wonder if they get to choose their team and the original pairs enjoyed working together or did the producers do it? In the past, the deisgners picked, so... I find it interesting that Keith and Bradley split up, but Angela and Vincent splitting is no surprise. I would have been more surprised ahd they worked together again!
BTW, my faves are Michael, Robert and Alison. Love the clean feminine lines. And I love Michael's. To think they were concerned about HIS taste level. His is impeccable! Angela's? Well, we've all covered that (please, can we cover her things?!)
So, who's missing? My bet is that whoever it is, the firing came after the teams were picked. That must have left one team short???? How much fun! Only a few hours left to find out.
Bye the way, my guess is that they are designing waitress/waiter uniforms for Hell's Kitchen. (Just kidding, I think.)

On an Angela note -- I wonder if the "sketches" she submitted at her audition had the rosettes? I wonder if they were sketches?
Do you think she is first cousin to Andrea from Top Chef?
Are we sure they are two different people?
Surely you jest. I am not a fan of what it is that Andrea does and I couldn't say that what she made was appealing to me but she has the respect of her peers and she does have skills. I wouldn't give an Angela creation to someone I loathed.
I'm a carnivore and would rather have a big rare steak,Baked potato with lots of butter and sour cream and creamed spinache so I don't think I would frequent a place where Andrea would cook. I would buy one of her books, though, and I'm sure that I would feel all healthy and stuff after.
Mmmm....rare steak. I wonder if I can get a res for Morton's tonight. Later.

I understand they need to keep some of the freaks around a little while to keep us interested. I mean, would I really watch every week if every designer was always great and no drama? No way.
I would love to see what made the cutting room floor.

Are the designers going to show at the September Fashion Week? The previous 2 seasons the final 3 got 5 months to make their collection. According to Tim Gunn's blog they met on a cold May morning to meet their dog's. May to September? That is only 4 months and isn't that when they are supposed to be designing and not still in the competition?
Just wondering what you guys thought.

Sam's is just closer to my house. I have been to Costco, but wasn't all that impressed at the time. That was a few years ago when they first hit the St. Louis market. It is now on my way to work, so I might give them another try. Sam's used to have a good book department. Almost anything new you could get for about 1/2 of the list price. But now it is a joke. I am doing my nightly dutiful bazillion-page read to catch up, and am still waaaaay back in the posts. However, I wanted to comment that here in Utah, a Dillard's emplyee was prosecuted after he was found rumaging around in the mall's dumpster after hours. Turns out he was trying to salvage upwards of $5,000 of clothes that Dillard's routinely throws away. Can't remember what he was going to do with them - sell them on eBay I think. He was convicted and is currently serving a sentence.

I must warn you Holster, I am not well liked here. I upset the balance of the Top Chef board by pointing out that they had failed to actually discuss Top Chef in between the blankies and the foo foos and the couches.
I see the usual suspects are up to the usual deal - except that my favorite whiner SweetPeaches is missing. I was NOT invited to join the secret special message board where the sun shines all the time and little birdies sing a happy tune and there are always rainbows and happy love - but that's ok, I live in San Francisco and we have pot.

I would literally give my eye teeth for a DVD of the Carol Burnett shows in their enitrety! The Gone With the Wind skit was SO hilarious! I adored it when the cast could not hold in their laughter. Sigh. So long ago. I feel the same way about the Johnny Carson shows.

I LOVED it when they cracked themselves up. I still watch the show just for that. Tim Conway was forever cracking himself and the others up.
If the shows themselves were that funny, imagine what outtakes would have been like.
If anyone knows where to get DVDs that do show more of the self-induced laughing, let us know!!!
One of my favorites is Tim as the dentist and Harvey as the patient. Tim kept sticking himself with the novacaine and Harvey couldn't even say what few lines he had.
Ooooh, I remember that one. LOLOL
Another one that is funny as he11 is one they like to show on those Most Outragous TV Moments shows...it was a Mama's Family skit and somehow Tim's character started talking about siamese elephants joined at the trunk and the sound effects he made when imitating them trying to trumpet just about had me peeing in my pants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And all the others lost it at that point. Hysterical.

As a "newbie" I just want to throw out my theory on who gets kicked off the show this week:
Angela - because the producers discover that she LITERALLY makes clothes the way other women make babies.
I'm finding you all very entertaining, please continue with the asides. I may jump in when I get more comfortable.
my latest theory is back to it being keith, for the plagiarizing (is that the buzz? haven't been following the so-called "spoilers"). we see Tim in the preview: "this is serious. rules are rules. you'll leave tonight."
then ... (wait for it):
"It's not your stitch, [expletive deleted]!"
LOLOL. TWO POINTS FOR PJ!

Target's plus size dept. su*ks with a capitol S. But I have been told by some middle management types at my store that even though they want to attract Wally World's customer's they don't want the big ones.
YIKES!!! You gave me another reason why I avoid Target. I stopped shopping there when they banned The Salvation Army from bell ringing to collect donations during the Christmas season.
And they misrepresent their products in their ads.
Yes, Target is evil. And CVS pharmacy, and Extreme Makeover Home Edition, but don't get me started.

To find your porn name use the name of your first pet and the first street you lived on as your last name.
