Maybe Vincent isn't so outdated after all. We all made fun of his dog challenge dress with the black leggings, but I just got a catalog in the mail touting skin-tight black pants and leggings as the "must have it" items this fall. Who'da thunk it.

You have got to be kidding. That really scares me and puts my worn out pea brain into a coma like state.

You know the thing that concerns me the most about the move is I may miss a Project Runway episode or possibly a Top Chief. You can see where my priorities are. Unpack the computer and hook it up to DSL and hook up the TV to the cable. I have already set up the appointments for these two hook ups. Must remember to do the electricity too. Heck with the kitchen, etc.

Well, I'm going through all that TOMORROW! I'm moving into a small apartment near the university in Bellingham, WA, where I'll be starting grad school next month. I drive north to pick up the keys tomorrow morning.

The bad news: the DSL and cable won't be installed/connected until Friday afternoon. The good news: the new place is only 90 miles from my current house (which I'm keeping), so I'm driving back home on Tuesday to pick up another load, and to watch PR on Wednesday, then back to Bellingham early Thursday a.m. to await delivery of new television/etc. followed by cable installation on Friday. Priorities, don'tchaknow!

I just realized that I'm going to be on the road delivering my son to back to college Wednesday. Heck with that, classes don't begin until Monday and it can wait a day. I'm changing the hotel reservation!

What is your major in grad school?

Choral conducting (M.Mus.) and Musicology (M.A.) -- dual program. Should take a couple of years, maybe a bit more. It keeps me off the streets! :-)

Is that too freakin funny? For all you new members, you must check out the column by Dave White. It is so funny.

Its as must read.

Thanks so much for the link. Did you get Dave White's reference to Laura having dinner with "the Upsons of Montebank"? It's from one of my all time favorite movies, "Autnie Mame". Now I remember: Laura reminds me of Rosalind Russell in that movie!

OT - Don't go with your kids, though, there is a "mile high club" sex scene. I went with my son, and afterwards he told me that, during this part, he was thinking "I can't believe I'm watching this with my mother." We had a huge laugh when I admitted that I was sitting there thinking "I can't believe I'm watching this with my son."

Awesome, I teach grad students in Chemistry and BioChemistry. You know, I finally figured it out. Either my students are getting smarter or I am getting dumber, cause these last few years have been something else.

New York. Takes about 8 to 10 hours with all the stops for food, gas, etc. I get antsy and have to keep stopping for food -- caffiene to wake me up and munchies to keep me from zoning out (hearing all the crunching in my head keeps me focused). Will have me a nice loooong drive through moo-cow land. Surprisingly, a good chunk of Eastern Pennsylvania smells like cows and manure.

I can't understand why some people feel that Allison shouldn't have been kicked off. Both I and my wife agreed that she and Kane had the worst outfits before the judging occurred. It was the right choice.

Yes, she is a cutie. Yes, she is a good designer;however, she made a very cute model look like a fat Minnie Mouse. Allison should have been kicked off.

Same here -- I'm from a LONG line of artists and musicians on my dad's side of the family, and there were a lot of musicians on my mom's side. I did OK in math and science -- I just finished my undergrad degree in June (I'm 55 yrs old, by the way, just in case you're curious) -- and managed to eke out A's in those classes, but I had to study like #&!!. I'm good in some forms of math, but not others (geometry, trig, anything to do with patterns, like probability and stats, etc. are all good for me; calculus? huh?).

At least in grad school, you can focus on your specific interest. No more "general ed" courses!! :-)

I thought that Kayne's model looked like a Fourth of July firecracker either that had flamed out when ignited or had gotten wet and never would go off. That was the most bizarre outfit I saw. And as for her hair it was worse than the hair bow on Alison's model. Vincent was not too far behind. Guess it is a matter of perception.

Awesome finishing at 55 I just turned out a 60 phd. I was so proud of her. The other grad stu's hated her cause she messed up the bell curve.
I am so proud of you. That is great, you go there girl. I bet if you have children they are proud as punch. I finished my phd when I was pregnant with my last. That was something I should have rethought before I got pregnant.
Keep up the good work, and remember when the going gets tough the tough get going.

Here's something I accidentally posted on the 305 board rather than here where it belongs. Definitely time to zip out to 7-Eleven and get a cup of coffee!

Ok, based on this last episode, I don't think either Kayne or Robert will end up in the final 3. Robert has already shown us twice that he is afraid to use colorful fabric and has two strikes against him when the judges muse back over the designer's performance.

And Kayne with the "frog exploded all over it" dress? His comeback effort wasn't much better and this misfire shows that he doesn't have the sure instinct that Michael, Laura, and Jeffrey do. My bet is that he gets the boot when he goes over the line of taste again and makes his model such a trashy gown that she looks like a hooker.

You could possibly be correct on that. Robert and Kayne are going to have to be really careful that is true. Michael, Laura and Jeffery are my picks too actually. I would have liked to see Robert make it but he just keeps coming up short. Kayne like Heidi said almost was out last week. Those three bottom scores must have been very very close.

Kayne's dress was hideous. And that flower painting on the already-poorly-constructed skirt? When one of my paintings isn't going well, I know better than to jazz it up by glueing a ball gown to the canvas.

In the words of Santino, you can't polish a turd. His saving grace was his face when told he was safe. He knew he dodged a bullet.

You are right on that one. It could have been him that was auf'd. In fact any of those three, Kayne, Vincent and Alison were about equal. Although I felt Alison was better than either Kayne and Vincent.

But, her decision to add that hair-bow probably influenced the judges vote. To wit: her careful consideration of her model's hair for the dog challenge was not lost on the judges, and in fact, seemed to be a factor their vote. So based on that, it seems fitting that her model's hair was again an element of the judges' vote. Maybe this is a small point, but heck, aren't they all?

I too like Uli, Michael, and Laura. What will be interesting to see is the designers develop as the challenges evolve. I remember Jay maturing in season one and Kara Janx (that precious, precious jewel) in season two; ...

When you mentioned Kara Janx, it reminded me that we have seen eight designers runway shows so far - 6 finalists and 2 "decoy" collections. Austin was given little time and less funding and so he had to pull from an old collection, but Kara Janx had the same resources as the others.. though Kara Saun had some special deals going with the custom designed shoes, and maybe on the metallic silks and leathers and furs as well.. ?
But despite all the controversies, fashion is so much a matter of taste, I thought it would be interesting to rate the runway shows of the eight who made it throught the runway maze to the end.

My top rated runway show is that of Kara Janx!
My second favorite is that of Santino Rice!
My third favorite is that of Austin Scarlett!
My fourth favorite show was from Jay McCarroll!
My fifth favorite show was from Kara Saun!
My sixth favorite show was from Daniel Vosovic!
My seventh favorite show was that of Chloe Dao.
And my least favorite show was that of Wendy Pepper.

Just dropping by for some punch. It took me a little time to catch up, so I hope you all are still around for some late-night chit chat.

To piggyback on some earlier points, I do think styling matters. It probably always has been an issue, but I've noticed more comments on Season 3 regarding the total look the designers put together. Even during the Road to the Runway, Kors mentioned the importance of presentation when he was reviewing Alison's portfolio. To paraphrase, she had used the "Right clothes, right hair & makeup, right girl. She's veeery goood. (Last sentence to be read with high, sing-song inflection.)"

Wasn't it this episode where the judges mentioned that Kayne gets presentation...and that Vincent needed to "get it"? Remind me...cuz someting is telling me that was part of the elimination process.

And, yeah, I do think that the explication each designer gives is taken into consideration. Anyone remember Robert from the first seaon? All the designers said he was skating by on his ability to talk a good talk. In this case, regarding her giant hair bow, Alison only said she wanted it to be fun and cute. She should have had some great story, like Kayne's "she-went-through-the-recycling-plant" malarky.

Maybe she could have taken a page from Vincent's book and said something like, "Hair bows turn me on." Or from Kara Janx's book, "Hair's like BAM. Like Wow." Or Satino's, "It's only a hair bow, Nina."

.........
Now for my take on why Vincent was in this last week and Alison was out. I think there is something about Vincent that we viewers do not see that the judges see that leads them to believe that he still has some sparkly magic. In my field, there are certain artists that those of us in the art world adore but that the general public could give a rat's arse about. These "artist's srtist" types inspire and/or encourage the rest of us to continue to produce work, and I think perhaps Vincent may be one of those designers that is a "designer's designer." A little washed up, sure, but his drive to give it a go one more time must be endearing and infectious to the judges and producers of PR.

And as for Alison: her talents are surely understood by the judges, as is her sweet personality, good looks, and overall pluck. All this translates to a surefire successful career. She's young and success is in the bag; Vincent, well, this might be his last shot.

Thoughts, anyone?

Oh, and everyone: run, don't walk, to see "Little Miss Sunshine."

You make an interesting point about Vincent, but I can't see it yet. I did notice that Michael Kors was much less taken aback by Vincent's 1960's lingo than Nina Garcia. Maybe it is like what Carson Kressley alluded to in his style book.. that we often stay with the fashions that were popular when we were young. (That would explain my guy's obsession with "bomber jackets".) I will have to be carefull not to revert to "low rise" jeans in my old age!

But other posters who were buying fashion in the 80's say that Vincent would not have been popular with what he has made thus far, even then.

My opinion is that Vincent is "old school" in the sense that he sees fashion design as being more about expressing himself, than about catering to the wants and needs of the modern fashionable woman. Maybe in Vincent's day if a top designer put a basket on a model's head, women would flock like sheep to buy basket-hats? I will occasionally watch the Style Channel (211 on Comcast), and I see top designers put on runway shows with fashions that are totally oblivious at best, and disrespectful at worst, to women. I would put Vincent in the oblivious category, and that's the best thing I can say about him as a designer.
As a person, I think he is one of the most "civilized" guys there. I think he is probably an excellent husband and father. He would make a fun dinner guest for charades and cards and such. He probably has an opinion on everything..
But as a designer of clothes for modern women.. I don't see it at all yet.
His first sundress was cute.. for a twelve year old.. sans hat!
His pageant dress was his best effort.. but needed editing.
His dogwalking outfit was totally Judy Jetson.
His Macy's imput was ignored by Robert, another egoist.
His Twiggy outfit was his worst effort.
His recycled paper dress, was, IMO, impractical that long, but arty and interesting. Kayne, at least, made a well fitted dress with an unusual, but not unflattering, sillouette. Frankly, I dislike any designer being auffed over a dress made from paper, or flowers, or food.. especially Andre!
Alison was auffed because she had the worst dress of the female designers and it was a female's turn to go. I disagree with the boy/girl pattern they use. Alison was also auffed because Kayne, as Nina Garcia said, "is never boring". Or rather, she said, "I'm never bored". Vincent is also a much livelier personality than Alison, who stood mute as her design was "trashed" if we are to believe the editing.. And also, both Kayne and Alison made very unfortunate styling choices.
Kayne chose wild styling to match a wild look. And Alison chose comical styling that wavered between Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck. They all forgot the woman was the point of it all.
I don't know what is saving Vincent. I predict he will be the next to go, unless, as another poster hinted, Kayne is unable to tone down his "drag queen" style enough for the "everyday woman", or Robert makes another snoozer in beige.

My guess for the next challenge is that one of those generic designers who has a line at "Macys" will be the customer and the guest judge. I don't think it is Liz Claiborne who is retired, but someone else with that kind of name recognition..

I liked Laura, but she is coming on too strong, and boy is she bossy!!!! And her style is almost too pure. She should challenge herself, and not do so tailored all the time. I see major cat fights coming, since she can't keep quiet!

I was hoping that Jeffrey would win this challenge. I loved that dress he made. I understand that michael was creative, but Jeffrey's was better.

Notevayas,

I agree with you. (Y, espero que no te vayas!).
It is harder to accept an auf when a talented designer like Andrae or Alison get booted on material choice. It seems as if the materials they each used got in the way of their designs.
In Andrae's case, the fabric jumped away from the model's body and didn't fit. Plus, she ended up looking like a doormat! Alison had a similar problem using paper. Her dress ended up looking bulky and couldn't be cinched in the waist. Hence, the walking brioche!

I think that Alison made more mistakes than that, however, (as you also mention) because the styling really called attention to every other misstep she made. At least with Andrae's topiary dress, you could see the little french-girl chic he was aiming for.

BTW, do you really think there is a boy/girl/boy/girl conspiracy going on here??
Remford
Given Alison's recent airing of her candid feelings about her being booted, and how it seems to have been due to everyone and anything BUT her poor execution in this challenge, I have to say that I'm disappointed to an extent that no amount of initial cute can overcome. What I had hoped was a unique and developed perspective born of her experience and the variety of influences she seems to have been fortuante enough to enjoy instead turned out to be arrogance wrapped in a vicitm's mindset.

It's rather ironic that someone whose livelihood depends on a certain measure of taste ultimately exercised so little class.
Parnell
Remford,

Do you mean that Alison showed little class on the runway or during her post-PR interviews?
I noticed that more than one of those comments on the Bravo exit video (and elsewhere) were, um, sour grapes. I was surprised, quite frankly, that she admitted Jeffrey often says what she thinks. It made me realize that the Supernice Supercute Supersilent Alison was a bit darker than we'd thought. Jeffrey's comments are often of a nefarious nature, dontcha think?

Cloe Dao was in response to wild Jay McCarroll.
Michael Knight is in response to Kara Saun.
The individual aufs do not follow an exact pattern.. but the three finalists and one alternate have been 2male, 2female in both season 1&2. It may be coincidence that a woman of color has made each final. Santino is mixed like myself, but Daniel V. was white enough for two.

Good Morning PR boarders, swiss, foodfan, brillke, etc. =o)Sorry I didn't see anything bad in her interviews. I know she stated that it was due in part to her having a bigger than average model, but that is just a statement as she sees it. as far as jeffrey and her being on the same wavelength? I think they are both young hip designers and most young people are of the same mindset. Jeffrey has proven that he can be a moron and very rude but alison has not, just cos they were friends doesn't mean they are totally the same. Just my two cents.

also, about that newspaper article about the model who made it to the final 3 that was in the accident? The way they have been switching models this season, who knows who she was modelling for to make it there? lol I sure as heck hope it wasn't vincent but only time will tell.

I don't believe it. Vincent is still in the show and Alison's out. What gives!? The "hat" that he made his model wear in the first show is the epitome of his character. Maybe that materialized from all the loose screws in his head. If they take a swab sample of that and examine it under a microscope they'd probably find Vincent's grey crazy matter there. Because he's still in the show I keep expecting him to redeem himself (as Robert has kind of done) and create something brilliant. I think that is exactly what the judges are waiting for, too, but every single time he just comes up with something crazIER.

Alison's teacup dogs episode dress was amazing. It just feels weird that they eliminated someone who could create something like that over someone who gets loonier every time we see him. But yeah, maybe Bravo's waiting to get a shot of Vincent having a tea party with his tape measure, form and sewing machine while wearing a tweed cap or something.

Who I'd love to see in Fashion Week:
Michael - I agree. He's a smart guy. I don't particularly love the last thing he made, but I did like the fuschia Pam Grier piece.
Laura - I know elegant and simple is her style, but I can't help but expect her to do more. I kind of wanted to see more details on her For Nuts Only dress. I would love to see Laura's Fashion Week collection. I love that she is fierce, and when she talked smack to Vincent.
Uli - Not a big fan of her braids and designs, but she does "make it work" everytime, and her works are consistently precise.

hi kitten, I know what you mean about Alison being booted while the nut job(Vincent) was kept on.
I love laura's designs, too. I think her clothes are elegant and timeless(ie:he Katherine Hepburn look)
Angela is surprising me I really like her Audrey Hepburn dress and if she keeps it up she just might end up in the top 3.
Loved jeffreys dress this last challenge!!Surprising as it is lol

OT

I just realized that I'm going to be on the road delivering my son to back to college Wednesday. Heck with that, classes don't begin until Monday and it can wait a day. I'm changing the hotel reservation!

Where does your son go to school FF1

Carnegie Mellon University. He's a theoretical physics major transitioning over to global affairs.

I just read an article about 10 colleges that you should choose over ivy league schools. Carnegie Mellon was one of the !0 schcools mentioned. Wish him luck.
