A friend from California and I just HAD to try boiled peanuts when we were driving in South Carolina. Reaction was mixed -- okay but why? We didn't finish them...

Of course. He boils his own. I can't stand them, but then I grew up in the "Peanut Basin of the Nation". Our only claim to fame, and I'll bet no one knows where that is, lol.

Boiled peanuts, eh? I've gotta say that's a new one on me. What exactly do they taste like? What's the consistancy? I'm fascinated by the whole thing and, since it's obvious that I don't have a clue, can someone please enlighten me?

Who knows? I may or may not want to discover this for myself but I would love a little info before I delight or gross myself out.

[quoteI have to say I loved, and still love, his children's books. A lot of my personal opinions to this day were formed by him. However, I did not so much like his latter-day books.

To all ya'll who don't read Heinlien, he wrote in the 1930's and foretold the Romba vaccum cleaner, "calorie free" food, and tons of other good stuff that hasn't been put into place yet. For example, roads that control the traffic. I would love that in Atlanta.

Umm -- he started writing in the late 1930s but was still producing exciting books until the mid 1980s. His major works were written inthe 1960s and 1970s.

The books he wrote for a more juvenile audience (some of his earliest) are still very good reads and his later books are some of the best sci-fi/fantasy I have ever read.

Along with Isaac Asimov and Poul Anderson among the greats!

You are correct. He had a very long career. I am still a juvenile at heart anyway.

They are exactly what it sounds like. My husband puts a big pot of salted water on the stove and throws in raw peanuts. He simmers them for hours, until they are soggy. Go figure. Get yourself some Spanish peanuts grown in Portales, New Mexico, roasted and salted for a real taste treat!!!!!

I quit when I got pregnant. I was never a heavy smoker. I was a socail, work-in-theatre-everyone-smokes, life is too stressful smoker. But I think that was a really easy way to quit...you just have to.

Never smoked myself, but I know there are lots of things I've been able to do for someone else that I would never have done for my own good.

On the other hand, money is another great motivator. Back in the '60s, my dad took a $50 bet that he couldn't go a month with a carton of cigarettes sitting on his desk (back before smoke-free offices) without breaking into it. Every time he thought about smoking, he thought about that money and grabbed a piece of fruit instead. At the end of the month, he couldn't see any reason to take up smoking again, and he didn't!

This is how I quit smoking. I ran out and I just didn't buy another pack. When you quit the first five days are like hell on Earth but I found that if you could get to the 6th day you pretty much had it made.

Whenever I was about to buy a pack I would think of something I wanted that was about the price of a pack and I bought that instead. After a couple of weeks I looked at all the neat stuff I had and it was easy to not smoke.

I also started running 5 miles a day. Have you ever lit a smoke after a nice long run? It will make you so nauseous you will wonder how you ever smoked the damn things in the first place.

Of course having a series of heart attacks will also make you contemplate exactly what damge you do to your body every time you light up. That old heart failure will wise you up, especially when your father and ex actually did die from a massive attack.

It's a definate reality check.

And since Danny boy also controls the Six Flags amusement parks, maybe they will all be converted to space ship and alien amusement rides (with a couch-jumping kiddie ride thrown in for fun).

(And I won't dare suggest any closet-themed rides, just in case I get sued.)

Did you know that about a half dozen of the 6 Flags parks are up for sale? It seems that he doesn't know any more about running them than he does a football team. Anyone who lives here knew it was a bad idea. We live anout 45 minutes from the park and yet we go to Busch Gardens or King's Dominion.

Trust me. Here in D.C. we love our Redskins but we can't abide that ostentatious little twerp. When you get a bunch of us fans together the only thing we'll all agree on is how much we hate Snyder.

Maybe South Park can do a show on him. It'll be the only enjoyment we'll all get from the man, himself.

I think I had them once, on a trip down south. If I remember correctly, they were slimier than the world's worst-cooked okra.

Oh the memories of slimy okra!
Cafeteria Menu- 1966 south Louisiana
Monday- Navy beans on rice, roll, milk, and stewed okra
Tuesday-Shrimp creole on rice, roll, milk, and stewed okra
Wednesday- repeat Monday's menu
Thursday- repeat Tuesday's menu
Friday- Fish sticks, jello, roll, milk, and you guessed it!- stewed okra!
Lunch was 10 cents, extra carton of milk, 2 cents

It's funny, I love fried okra.

You got that right, man. Can't argue with a thing you say. I live right around the corner from Six Flags America, yet when my sister and her family visited from Kansas in June, I told them to drive a few hours to Hershey Park, Kings Dominion, or Busch Gardens if they wanted to go to an amusement park.

**Actually SisterZip, I'll jump into this with a guess that dcjewbear might agree with what I'm going to say. I think that being a DC-area baseball fan might top your St. Louis football sob story. We lost two pathetic baseball teams within a decade, had to wait 25 years to get a replacement, and then were so desperate that we were overjoyed to get the Montreal Expos, truly one of the absolute worst teams of modern-day baseball.

But at least we finally have a local team again, so we love them, no matter how bad they are. **

Back during the 2nd Senators incarnation a friend's father worked for Bekins and they had a box right behind the home dugout. I saw almost every game they played at home. I even got into the clubhouse where I met the great Ted Williams. It's been said that Ted was aloof but he couldn't have been more gracious to this 12 year old. He signed my program and I still have it. That was a good day.

I don't think the Nationals are so awful, really. They have a talented group of position players They just have no pitching, but then who does in the National league.

I do have to say that their first baseman, Nick Johnson, besides being a wonderful player, is one hot [expletive deleted]. I would do him in a heart beat. He's also a real sweetheart. I got his autograph as well. Is it juvenile for a damn near 50 year old man to fawn over a handsome ballplayer? Oh well.

Tomorrow's episode HAS to be better than last week. I think the only way to remove last weeks slime from off of me is to see the new episode!

I hope tomorrow's show isn't just a rehash of last week's show (as is suggested by the previews).

I also hope I'm able to watch the show tomorrow. I'm in the line of Ernesto, and we'll probably lose power for a few days.

OK, I guess that sounds really shallow. We'll be lucky if losing power is our biggest problem.

Still, I love me some PR and I hate to miss it!

I hope you make it through the storm safely - i'll keep sending positive thoughts!

and you did not sound shallow - its the day to day things that keep us going!

to anyone else out there in Ernesto's path - keep safe!!

My sister's husband wouldn't eat anything unless it was fried. Preferably deep-fat fried. Even dessert. Yuck!

Hi Brillke and gang,
Just jumping on here. Brillke, those burgers are smelling great out here in the west. Better than the smoke I am smelling from the large forest fire I am watching burn a few miles from my house. Going to be a long night.

We have not heard from FF1 for a week. I know she was taking her son off to college but does anyone have any idea when she will be back? Not that I do not enjoy all of you. I do.
Just wondering where she was.

Oh my! May I say "Thanks for the memories!" on this flavor? My mom (transplanted from Southern Illinois to Southern California) used to do this with sliced green tomatoes right out of our garden....and my hubby used to fix these for me back when we were first dating. Where we live now he can only grown cherry tomatoes on the patio (with much cursing at the bugs LOL). Maybe I'll suggest he try the green cherry tomatoes whole instead of mixing them with the jalapenos in his different salsa or pickle mixes.

By the way...may I have a burger please while counting down to tomorrow?????
Thank'ee M'aam!

Hey Everyone,

Do you think this week's challenge is to design something for the company Jet-Setter? (Hopefully, not for yet another product placement op!). I know they make jeans, hats, and travelling accessories, but I'm not sure if they make any other clothing. Just a thought. . . .

Hope you start feeling better soon. I know how it goes. i am afraid I will have to have foot surgery this fall and the computer will be the only way to keep my sanity while being home bound.

Thanks to all for the good wishes, it just illustrates the point about everyone being very supportive. I feel sure there will be some TV show for you this fall that will have a great set of people on the boards. I have never seen Top Chef or the Amazing Race, but I plan to look for them.

I was just thinking the same thing. I've never watched Top Chef, but after reading the comments here, I'll definitely be checking it out. I remember trying to watch one episode of Amazing Race in its first season, but I was totally turned off by the whining, arguments, and "drama" -- may have been just that one episode, but it turned me off the show and I've never watched it since. I may give it another try.

Years ago, I was very active on one of the most popular Forums on Compuserve. This was in the 80s, before the Internet became "public" and popular, and Compuserve was THE online service (there were a few others, but none had the subscription numbers of CS). We had annual gatherings in various parts of the country (Las Vegas, LA, NY, Chicago, New Orleans, among others), where we'd meet people face to face that we'd gotten to know online. The manager of the forum actually wrote a book about the whole online phenomenon, "The Electronic Confessional" -- about how people would open up and say things on a computer that they would never dream of saying in person, using stories and examples from the Forum. (Yes, I'm in the book, as were all the other "sysops" on the forum -- the folks who helped lead the discussions, handled the databases, etc.) Anyway, it was a very interesting time to be involved in this kind of thing. It was a rare thing and a HUGE deal when we had a wedding where the couple had first met online -- today, that's almost commonplace.

More recently, a lot of Yahoo groups have get-togethers. I've been to several needlework-related group gatherings over the past 5-10 yrs or so. I think it would be fantastic fun to all meet at Fashion Week, probably not this year, but maybe 2007. I have no idea if we'd be able to get in to see anything, but it might still be fun to do something, especially if we could somehow get Bravo (and/or the sponsors) involved.

you if you even think of leaving litter or SMOKING in my car. I can't deal with it at all. This is coming from a man who once had a 4 pack a day habit! LOL

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you do it? I'm almost up to 2 packs a day and can't seem to kick it. I'm good for 3 weeks, 3 months, and once even 7 years, but I keep going back! UGH!

D

I can tell you how I did it (23 yrs, 2 packs / day). I had an asthma attack, a fairly serious one, and when I got over that, I knew I had to quit or risk a more serious episode. Granted, there was no guarantee that it would happen again, but there was no guarantee that it wouldn't, either. So I told myself that I was a NON-smoker, not an ex-smoker -- somehow, saying I was an ex-smoker didn't have the same effect as saying I was a NON-smoker. I think "ex-" leaves open the option that I could start again, while "non-" doesn't. Everytime I felt the urge to smoke, I just told myself that, no, I couldn't have a cigarette because I was a NON-smoker, and NON-smokers don't smoke. My prior quitting history was similar to yours -- although my longest period of abstention was 4 yrs.

Somehow, it worked. I quit cold-turkey. I had my last cigarette on May 11, 1992 at 7:30am, the morning of the asthma attack. I threw out nearly a full carton of Benson & Hedges menthols. And I've never regretted it.

I think you have to have a good reason to quit, and you'll know when it happens.

Jeffrey was such a jerk in this episode. I think he should have been eliminated for being an ass. His outfit was unoriginal and ugly. ew.

Sigh! I still remember the glory days of the hogs and the Super Bowl win. We were soooooooo excited that year. I'm in New England now so root for the Patriots too; they have the same tendency to disappoint(as do the Red Sox). Maybe the Redskins will rebound this year. Who knows.

And when asked they could have said "no way". They weren't under contract. That means they did it of their own volition. Did they ask explicit questions? if they had there would have been no challenge as no one would have shown up.

Very simple.

Maybe not so simple, Bear. The relatives were told they were coming to New York to surprise their loved ones. Once they got there they were told the surprise was also on them. I agree with you that the ladies "cuda shuda", however, it is possible that the herd mentality took hold. Some of them might have been intimidated by the producers or just the circumstances, and didn't want to dissapoint. It would have taken a very strong personality, once there, to just say no. As a whole, these women cared enough about their loved ones to get on a plane with very little notice and practically no information to see their daughters/sons/brothers. I'm sure one or two of them were not real keen on the "plan" as it unfolded, however, would these same ladies be willing to possibly jeopardize the contestants' standings over their own discomfort. I'm just not sure it was that simple a decision.

Agreed

During the mid 70s, the Cardiac Cards were fun to watch, but because of Billy Boy Bidwell, we just didn't have enough talent to complete the mission. We then went 10 years without football. Even though I wasn't all that thrilled to have the Rams here, after 5 years we were finally rewarded. But it has been a long frustrating journey.

True. Very true. But you did eventually have the privilege of watching "The Greatest show on Turf" and, even as a Redskins fan, that was something to behold. They made me a lot of money in one Super Bowl and, if it hadn't been for f***ing Adam Vinitiera, would have done so in a 2nd one.

And, yep, I'm a guy. We make stupid bets on sporting events. I know when the Red Sox beat the Yankees in 2004 they financed a very nice Hawaiian vacation for the two of us. LOL

And I still love Kirk Gibson for that magnificent home run in the first game of the 1988 world series. He drove a stake through the hearts of the Oakland Athletics and they were never really in the series after. I put a down payment on a car with my winnings from that. ROTFLMAO

but the greatest show on turf only lasted a couple of seasons and he is now with Billy Boy in AZ. He is done and just won't admit it.

Nothing can beat the joy I felt when my husband's aunt let me have her ticket to the final game of the 82 World Series. I was sitting in the press boxes with hubby's uncle, a sweet heart of a man. When the game was over a woman in a fur coat, who I did not know, hugged me and we jumped up and down forever, it seemed.

Now for my friend who is in the nations capital and says they love their football team.

I live in Dallas but am not a native, I love my Packers, thru thick and thin. Now loving Packers in the Dallas Fort Worth area is dangerous to your health. If you think you hate the Cowboys let me tell you how they, DFW fans, feel about the Redskins. "They are the lowest of the low. They don't know what a football is. They think the Redskins need to get a life." Yes the Cowboys are located for now in Irving but will soon have a wonderful new statium in Arlington. They are located between Dallas and Fort Worth, just as most things are, the baseball park, the airport, etc. This is because it is faster for a quick exit and return to their homes. What's the big deal? Now football in Texas, no matter if it is grammer school, high school or college is right up their with going to church. They are crazed. Since I got out of college, I have returned to only one college football game, not here in Texas, they go back all the time. Most individuals own seasons tickets to the alma mater football games. TCU, Southern Methodist, Texas and Texas A and M to name a few. There is a game played here in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas called the Red River Shoot Out. It is between Texas at Austin and Oklahoma in Norman. Let me tell you what that is like. Many go to the game, Oklahoma invades Dallas and the shoot out is on. (I stay home and pray the city is still standing after the weekend is over) The game this year will be on the 10 of October. The ticket sale prices are astounding. Range for $125 to almost $2000 a piece. Let me tell you the most expensive tickets go first around here.
When the Redskins come to town, if and when they do or can show their faces here, the area goes into their hate mode. According to the natives, the Redskins are the scourge of the earth and can not fight their way out of a paper bag. Yes the Redskins win a few but that is quickly forgotten because they say the Cowboys let them win. I personally do not see what the big deal is with the Cowboys and Redskins. I was born in the area of the black and blue division, that is where it is at.

You should see New England when the Yankees come to town. Talk about hate!

you if you even think of leaving litter or SMOKING in my car.

UGH!

D

Commit lozenges works for me. Off the cigarettes 2.5 years now.

my dad smoked 2 1/2 packs of Pal Mal unfiltered every day for 25 years. he had his first heart attack at age 48 and quit cold turkey. Man has huge...balls. (awful thing to say about your dad...ewwwwww) but he was amazing.

Mom on the other hand quit when they told her she had very mild emphazema about 15 years ago. She had to do the 'patch' and it worked for her.

LOL...that just reminds me of how I quit smoking some odd decades ago (and I had a two and half pack a day habit for close to 10 years!) I started chewing bubble gum and retaught myself to crochet. That gave me something for my mouth and something for my hands. It was tough...took two years and about a half-dozen false starts, but worth it. I even kept up with the yarn work...I still do lots of knit and crochet projects....in fact I can hear my current project, an almost done full sized-afghan calling me........it's a fall birthday gift for a friend, and I can hear it all the over here at the computer *grin*
Seriously....hang in there, and try to find something that works for you and then stick with it. Don't be afraid of the false starts or of other people's opinions. My hubby still smokes and I wouldn't nag at him for the world....making the decision to quit and trying to stick with it is harder than, harder than...well, convincing Angela not to adorn her Macy's outfit in florette/yoyo/fleurshan thingies! *wink*

I cross stiched..Monkeys, Elephants, Tigers, Lions, Memphis Skyline, etc..

I cross stitch, too. I have too much stuff to count!

Yes, the Bidwells did the same thing to the Chicago Cardinals...held em up and when it didn't work, off the St. Louis. We should have worked a deal like the Browns did...keep the team name (Browns, cardinals, whatever). Then we would still have the Redbirds (baseball) and the Big Red (footfall). I don't know that there was a more hated man in St. Louis than Bill Bidwell. And the reason we didn't get a team for so long was because the Ol Boys Network of owners sided with him. Thats why it took a female owner to get a team here. And it looks as though Billy Boy is up to his old tricks in Arizona. Better their problem that ours.
======================
There is a reason I did not comment on the "Bill Bidwell." I have nothing nice to say about him. He was an owner of the old school like the other one who owned and coached the Bears. They wanted it all, as I remember it wasn't until after he was dead that the Bears stopped playing at Wrigley Field and went on to play at Soldier's Field. He felt he would have had to pay way too much in rent for the Soldier's Field. Like I said they both were of the old school, they were in the same class as Chuck Cominsky of the twenties. They all wanted to own the fields they played in so they could get a portion of the parking, food and liqour, just anything that was sold or vended during the games. It was MONEY that moved them.

but they wanted everyone else to pay for it, just let them keep the money. not too much different these days.

OMG, Jewbear, Ilove you!
Baseball players- yummy! With each post you reveal something else we have in common. I'm a freelance floral designer and have been through the back of the house of many a fine hotel. Are you by chance a member of NACE or ISES?

No, Im not, but it's a thought. I've been a concierge for years and I should probably look into this. It's just that I actually grew up in the biz and have cultivated so many contacts through friends and tricks that I haven't done it. Maybe this year.

The funny thing is I don't like anything about smoking and still can't seem to stop. Smoking in our house is restricted to the sun porch and basement office.

Excellent ideas! I'm going to try both--especially the one with the jar cuz the smell thing is big with me.

My best friend used to smoke, and even though I love her to pieces, it was hard to be around her cuz she stunk! Anyway, she quit cold turkey after she almost died from an asthma attack. She now has emphysema. Several years ago, I watched a coworker die of lung cancer which eventually went to his brain. I can't understand why that didn't make the rest of the people I work with quit. I mean watching someone die because he was a heavy smoker, and still not quit? My landlord died last month from lung cancer, and he had quit 30 years ago. It still came back to haunt him. Some of his sons still smoke. What does it take? I never wanted to smoke, thank God. I know it's an addiction, but if it's going to kill you, quit!
