Let me start by saying that I loved this episode a lot. John was a sweet, intelligent, romantic guy. The Fab 5 did a great job on him. (The episode almost inspired me to get a French press. Almost.)

Anyway, I loved everything about this episode, from the remodeling of his home (while keeping the memories intact) to the incredibly well-tailored suits from Brooks Brothers. Nice job, guys.

The event was also touching and wonderful, especially when they were giving each other dance lessons on the floor. It's nice to know they share common interests and a very deep friendship that will endure regardless of whether or not it blossoms into something else. Who knows what the future will bring...

John K. is probably my favorite straight guy to date. He's a generous, loving, strong person who deserves to have a happy time with his life. (Now I'm going all sentimental. Somebody stop me.) Best of luck to you, John.

Ah dearest peeps... I was SOOO looking forward to this episode! I'm so glad I wasn't disappointed in even the slightest way!

My perception of this epi is colored, however by the past few weeks... today in particular. Going through my Grandparents things and packing them has been harder than I ever thought possible. I was SO ready to laugh and squeel with our guys - and while I had the most overwhelming feeling of joy through the whole thing... and a smile on my face... I spent the whole show in tears.

From the moment John was in tears - I was lost, hardly able to see the screen at times. What a beautiful, courageous man.

Our dear Gentlemen Five were strikingly handsome dressed in fashions by Louis Vuitton. (I'll NEVER get over how stunning Carson is in pink.) I loved them from the moment they went through the house to the reveal when Jai and Kyan were dancing. Stunning. Absolutely devistatingly handsome.

I laughed and applauded as Thom and the gents got away with what I want to do everytime I pass through the bedding sections of stores... JUMPING ON ALL THE BEDS! How FUN!!

I was so impressed that Kyan got John involved with Pilates! I was applauding when Ted took John to a cooking school! (I've waited a LONG time for Teddy to do that!) I LOVED the dance lesson and wished we could have seen more of Jai dancing. The trip with Carson to - was it Brooks Brothers? - Had me giggling when Carson had John in those LOUD and proud multi colored slacks!

I loved the classic cutting up - and that John zinged back a couple of shots - but it was the little things that touched me so deeply... I cannot tell you... When the Mother's clock was working and it chimed... "Mother's watching!" I had already thought how his dear wife would be dancing through the new place and blowing him kisses - wanting him to be happy in his new life. ...And then the clock chimed... Ghod, how wonderful...

I LOVED how he flirted with all the girls they met in each segment. I thought his sisters were just the cutest! Joan was a doll - and SO much fun! John and Joan were just stunning together. The Rainbow Room was the dreamiest I've ever seen. How Romantic! Beautiful music, good food, wonderful company... sheer perfection!

I grieved so deeply when our Nation was attacked - and wrote letters to every department in NYC, Washington DC and the firefighters in PA after Sept. 11th 2001. To find out John was involved in any way... I... I just have such deep respect for him. And for him to give the watch to Joan, a momento from the service he rendered during that horrible event... I... I just cried and cried. How utterly beautiful.

Dearest John... may this be the first day of the rest of a truly beautiful life, full of adventure, romance, family, good friends, and joy in ever increasing abundance.

Peace and grace to you - joy and love in your world today.

This episode was...so...CUTE!!! John was absolutely adorable! I loved everything about this episode - except those golf pants Carson picked out. What was he thinking!

You know, if Thom's work in this episode is not a testament to his deserving to win an Emmy, then NO one deserves to win an Emmy! Even the friends I watched it with were fascinated. I was so proud - I said "Oh he does that all the time!" AND...he looked SO amazing that at one point during a close up on him, I choked on air...I swear it! His energy during the shopping episode was ...omg! Contagious, just contagious! I felt like doing flips on my bed and re-arranging my room!

All the boys were gentle with him but at the same time had fun with him and I was glad to see that reciprocated by John. He was such a sweetie and a good guy - and he was in darned good shape to be 66!!

"It's still tickin'" - omg, I can't believe Carson did that! lol

"Hey Morty!" - Jai cracked me up!

Ted: "Are you buying a queen"
Thom: "No Ted, we're leaving you here"

There's more but I can't get into it now...I keep rewinding the tape to stare at Thom doing flips, walking, sitting, breathing...

~SIGH!~

*Snaps* to Bravo for mixing up the demographic a bit! I've noticed that most of the SGs are in their late 20's, and had always wondered what a show with a senior would be like.
I'm so relieved to finally have Kyan back! (especially after he disappeared from Sheboygan, but that's another story) Kyan's hair and clothes looked nice and understated. He's the only man I like having longish sideburns. (On other men, not so much .) I loved the way his chest hair was peeking out of the top of his shirt! I also thought his "Tight End" t-shirt in the pilates scenes was cute. Hee! Was it just my missing him so much, or did his voice seem a bit deeper when he was talking to the SG? ~~~SWOON~~~ I still don't get what Ky has against blowdrying, and whether that applies to women's hair too. He looked really good dancing with Jai during the reveal.
I loved when Carson was using the stethoscope on the SG. He seemed to have alot of fun with the SG's kilt, too! I didn't like the first outfit that Carson picked out for him at the store.
Jai was hilarious as an "old man" in the beginning. I didn't know what to make of his Hip Tip hairstyle, though.
I like when Thom used that old lady accent in his Hip Tip.
To me, SG sounds a bit like the tall guy on "Everybody Loves Raymond". I liked the scene at the Pilates class when Ky shows him the stirrups and he says, "Whoa! Hey, I'm not into this!"
Y'know, recently my social life took a temporary upswing, which lasted until a week ago. Now that that's gone, I've noticed a long overdue (but probably short-lived) upswing in a certain area of my love life lately. Perhaps the tattoo is a non-issue now. So, I took notice when the dance instructor said, "And would you cuddle with me please?", because that's exactly what I said while trying to kill time before the show started. Well, due to that, I missed the first 5 min. of the show. Sorry I cheated on you, Kyan, but if you won't let me touch you, "it" has to happen somehow.

John was sooooo cute!! I was really impressed to see that the guys were very deferential toward him as an older guy (could be their dad or uncle) and didn't interact with him like they usually do with the twentysomethings.
John was extremely appreciative and i could tell that he really needed that "make better." How many guys have cried after their session?!
Those patchwork pants that Carson made him try on at Brooks Brothers were sooooo wrong though! http://boards.bravotv.com/bb/images/icons/grin.gif

* G R E A T * E P I S O D E ! ! ! *

Three cheers for a senior who wants to get out of a rut!

Any 66 year old who can jump his way, mattress to mattress, through an entire showroom, run through the streets with men half his age, be a terminal flirt, get misty over his environmental make-better, be willing to take charge of life's physical challenges, and actively seek companionship and romance, "deserves a place in the AARP Hall of Fame."

AND KUDOS TO THE FAB FIVE FOR ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE !!!

Hiding behind their sometimes flip and witty exteriors, was a real respect and compassion for another human being struggling to recover from a painful exile brought on by death of a life-mate.

FANDAMTASTIK WORK, GUYS! I SALUTE YOU!

...a very grateful SA

De: You are famous for your "Peace & Grace" sign-off, but never has it been so meaningful as in your post re: John K. I can't look at pictures of NY without thinking of the wound the city suffered and the bravery of its residents. Especially the rescue workers, law enforcement, and ordinary people who did extraordinary things that day. There are 3000 miles between us, but it will never be forgotten. I've often wondered where Thom was on that day (seems wrong to single him out but I can't help it...please forgive me.)

This is the BEST episode I have ever seen! It is great to see Bravo/Scout recognizes that there are ALL ages out there that watch tv, not just teens to thirtysomethings. John is the best straight guy I have seen since the show started and he really won my heart! The Fab Five were wonderful with him! I really got choked up when John was looking around his newly decorated 'bachelor pad'. It was truly a new beginning for him all around. I give him a lot of credit what he done. It took a lot of courage!

John I wish you the very best!!!

So, this grandma was in heaven! Lucky Joan, and I've never even cared for New York accents or a perceived NY attitude before.
I ditto everything that has been said thus far about this episode. I cracked up so bad when the boys were jumping on the beds. I've never met an older man with so few inhibitions about being silly--something I LOVE to be! (Last year I (a sign language interpreter) performed as 'Signing Elvis' for two different events (hand sinc-ed Heartbreak Hotel)). That's the kind of silly I enjoy.
It WAS like a dad with his sons in many ways. John could have been so uptight and generational with the F5 but instead he was throwing zingers back, laughing, I about died of shock when Carson checked John's groin but John just laughed and stepped back.
I got a phone call in the middle of the reveal just about the time John and Joan were deciding whether to dance to the inappropriate music, so I only saw, didn't hear what the guys had to say. I thought it was pretty brave of John and Joan to go out and try to dance. Need to see the show again tonight.
There was a moment that caught my throat during Carson's fashion show. Ky and either Ted or Thom were on the bed and Ky reached out and tapped T's nose. It was so SWEET!
And yes, the clock, and John's tears were so touching.
I too am dealing with my mother's descent into dementia right now so I also was watching with a tight throat and a mist of tears thru' much of the show.
Bravo, Bravo. Fabulous, Fab Five. More, more more!

This episode is definitly my fav. The genuine tenderness the Fab5 showed to this man made my heart melt. What I love most about this show(and this episode showed it at its best) is it is NOT a make over show. It is a make BETTER show. All 5 guys seem to know that each Straight Guy needs and does it. The Fab 5 obviously have wonderful hearts.

I found this episode very touching too, largely because of John being older and dealing with these very difficult issues, like losing his wife and fighting severe depression. I LOVED Thom telling him that he wasn't going to get rid of his mementos - he was going to use them in the apartment. And then he digs out stuff like that cool 60s painting of NY.

My mother is having serious problems with her short-term memory, and while they haven't diagnosed her as having dementia, I can understand what you're going through. That, and my aging aunts and uncles made me appreciate this episode even more too.

French presses are really fun - I got one for joining a Starbucks coffee club thing, and I actually use it. It just feels so .... elegant to make coffee with a French press! And it's very easy. Until you have to clean up the grounds, at least.

I think my favorite thing about the entire episode, though, had to be Thom and Carson shattering the Corelle all over the kitchen. I was in hysterics - and it reminded me of my cousin as a kid, slinging her mother's new Corelle at the wall because it SAID it was unbreakable. She was just testing. My aunt was NOT pleased.

Oh, man, I have to agree with everyone--this is now my favoritest episode, and all because of John K. I like him as much as I like the Fabs...

This "senior" is proof that age doesn't mean close-minded, decrepit, or set in his ways. At 66, he's not that old in the scheme of things anyway, and his pursuit of fitness and health and his desire for personal growth were inspiring, especially after the loss of his life partner. What the FF did was to help him in his goals, as opposed to kickstarting the straight guy into striving to be better. John K. had already started his journey before Kyan and ted and Thom and Car and Jai showed up...

This guy is not going to have any problems with the ladies. Any hesitancy on his part is probably due to his mourning, because he already has the charm, sweetness, and sense of humor the ladies (and not a few of us guys) like.

And good God, those pants were actually in Brooks Brothers? Carson, are you projecting? And don't you already own a pair of those Madras plaid things? Or are they capris?

And as wonderful as Thom's treatment of the apartment was, the best part was the fact they did get the clock fixed. Something like that didn't have meaning for just John, but for his sisters as well.

Did anyone catch what kind of coffee Ted got John (De?)? I hope it wasn't Starbucks...(or Mill Creek, hahahaha)...

And the appreciation he showed the guys! Has anyone ever been as emotionally available and sincere as this guy? And he was so in the moment and open to their ideas...he's going to make someone a nice and cuddly Daddy. Joan, you better grab him!

Peace and love, Rjaye.

It's about time they did an older guy, and this one was no disappointment. He was so open and cool about it, so funny and flirty and cool, and so brave, too -- when he was choking up in that one scene, I was choking up, too, thinking about hard it must've been for him to see his bedroom, especially, all made over. Sure, it was beautiful, but part of him had to be thinking, "my wife didn't do this, she didn't get to see it, either." Thom handled it very well, trying to keep a lot of familiar things and even not changing any of the bedroom furniture except for a little bit of stain. I totally wanted to hug John by the end.

Random note: Thom has the best taste in socks of any man I know. These appeared to be dark brown and cream-striped (could possibly be the ones from the bathtub pic, but I don't think so). The boy loves his fun striped socks.
Yuki
Well i'm just curious, in this episode does Jai and Kyan dance together? I saw pics and they were. Also what are Jai and Kyan doin when they are sitting down near the end and Jai's hand is on Kyan's knee and stuff?

I was soo happy to see these pics casue I'm a full Jai x Kyan supporter. Anyway thanks

My thoughts (drum roll, please):
The ease with which Thom did the somersault on the mattresses....well, as Paris and Nicole say: "That's hot!"
I loved the sofa Thom picked for John. That must be my clubby/masculine side coming out.
Ted (to John): "....how the gloves fit...let's revisit that topic later." That's our Ted...sexy AND safe!
I'm a widow (which sounds kind of romantic and dramatic, but it's not) so I can relate to what John said about having a difficult time clearing out his wife's closet. I still have the motorcycle my husband was riding when he was killed. Ironically, it survived relatively unscathed so now it lives in a shed in my backyard....a BMW with a dead battery, covered with dust and spiderwebs...but I'm unable to part with it.
John K: "I'm choked"
Thom: "That's good." (Oh, Thom, once again I was moved by your ability to empathize.)
Jai: "Let her know you appreciate her friendship" (Snaps to Jai for not overstating the relationship. He placed value on the concept of friendship without putting pressure on John to go where he's not ready.
Kyan: (at the reveal talking about the sisters) "They're in the bathroom trying to ignore the fact that their brother's on the bed with Joan." LOL
Joan: (whispers to John at the Rainbow Room) "....and now you're on top of the world." (Joan,Kyan said he loves you and he's so right....what's not to love?)
Carson, I think Brooks Brothers was exactly the right choice for John and, BTW, you are looking so hot these days! (I like to point that out to make Thom jealous.....I think I just heard Dr. Phil say, "How's that workin' for you?")

ThomsTeddyBear, my_guy_ky, & crusty all agree that the golf slacks Carson picked out for John were objectionable. De is sitting on the fence with "...those pants WOULD make him the honorary Grand marshall at the Gay Pride Parade."

As Senior Citizen In Residence, SA challenges their opinion. One has to look no further than any exclusive golf course clubhouse to find the male animal arrayed in comparable peacock splendor. And why not? Is it fair that only the gals can wear "fun" colors and patterns? Maybe not appropriate for the boardroom, but he's willing to bet that even the current nouveau pop icon, THE Donald, would feel right at home in a pair when he's on the links!

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK??

Is the old proverb, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander" valid or should men eschew having a good time by being a little daring once in a while, fashionwise.

Lets hear about it. . .

Sweetie - diplomacy isn't the fence. Quite frankly - I find men in colorful garb incredibly sexy. HOWEVER, I would never be caught dead in THAT fabric myself! LOL! I don't mind loud and proud, but loud and garish is too much.

And speaking of color - Pre Queer Eye, I NEVER saw men wearing
pink ties! At least not any men over the age of 21. ...And pink shirts? Forgettaboutit! In the past year, I have seen numerous TV hosts begin to get brave with the pink tie as neckwear... but lately it's on every news channel! Ultra-conservative Bill O'Reilly from Fox news was wearing one, and I nearly fainted! Night before last, I was watching C-Span's coverage of Parliment and Prime Minister Tony Blair had the most BEAUTIFUL pink tie I had EVER seen in my life! Last night - Conan O'Brien did as well!
Boy when Carson said, "Wonder Gay Powers Activate in form of NECKWEAR!" It was the power felt 'round the globe! You Go Guys! Pink ties for EVERYBODY!

Jai danced with the lovely and gracious lady dance instructor with suave finesse. Jai and Thom ballroom danced before the reveal with Thom twirling Jai with grace and style. Carson and Kyan "RiverDanced" their way into the loft at the Tate in honor of John K.'s Irish background. While the music swelled with a latin beat, Kyan and Jai danced (A Mombo? A Samba? I'm so confused!) And Thom danced on the other side of the room. Ted lamented (pointing to himself and Carson) that the Rainbow Room band should play something conservative for them.

During the heartfelt moments, Kyan held Jai's hand - as all our guys have often done with each other when nervous or deeply touched by what they watched. (Don't worry, I don't think it's anything that would've made Kyan's boyfriend, Greg, jealous.)

It was a really lovely show.

I don't know if John K. plays golf.

Other than that, whether daring attire is okay, I think it depends on the guy. Carson and Jai can get away with wearing some very flashy clothes, without the clothes wearing them. Carson can do it probably because he's very outgoing, flamboyant, funny and he's slim. Jai can do it because he's kind of feminine, fairly slim, the youngest one of the five and he has the dark skin to pull off those bright colors. A lot of other men look better in classic lines and more understated colors.

I saw a picture of Kyan where his clothing is OVERTSZUJED. He was wearing leather pants with a red and a white stripe down the sides and very odd-looking zippers on the front; a white & chrome belt slung over them; and a green t-shirt under a white dress shirt under a white fishnet tank and a gray blazer over all those layers of shirts. Quell horreur! It looked like he was trying to dress like Carson! I never gave him permission to dress as such! *sigh* Maybe next time, he'll wear the couture that I've laid out for him.

I love Kyan in a rock'n'roll look, however - such as Custo Barcelona, Cavalli!, and DSquared. *le sigh*, but I can't really imagine Ted in some of the things I love on Ky. (Like that Cavalli getup in the publicity shots with the long-sleeved white and red t-shirt and the silver jeans.) I also love Kyan in classic, understated attire, like he wore on this ep., as well as very casual sporty stuff. But not preppy (Warren L.) or geek chic (Michael C.), nor do I like pink on him. But I love pink on Carson. And I like preppy on most men, especially Carson. So I think it's all individual. Some can get away with it, others not so much.

Ahhh Ha!
But Cyndi Lauper didn't shop at Nordstrom's, L.L. Bean, J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, Orvis, Key West, Liz Claiborne, Newport News, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Bahama, and Coldwater Creek, just to name a few that are featuring
"patchwork" for ladies this season.

Loved the Carson impression...
Darlin - I used to work in Lane Bryant ladies apparel many many moons ago. (Plus sized fashions size 16 to 28)... Even at a size 16 - when the insane plaid came in - or the all lace nose-to-toes "cat suits" came in, I still cringed.

Just because it's for sale, and someone in Paris says it's the rage, doesn't mean you should be wearing it. Doesn't mean you CAN'T buy it and wear it... just doesn't always mean you SHOULD!!

Peace and have a good weekend everybody!!!

so sez SA, snickering up his imaginary sleeve! (sotto voce) How'mi doin', Carson?

CK: Great, luv! You just keep droppin' those names like a real pro. If you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em.

She has/had the money to shop there and buy those...pants? She just had sense enough not to

lol (you know I'm teasing ya)

I just wanted to say Hi to everyone! I have enjoyed watching most of the shows, but after reading about Kyan's disappearance I am curious. I honestly do not know what episode this happened in. Am I missing something?

... There are 3000 miles between us, but it will never be forgotten. I've often wondered where Thom was on that day (seems wrong to single him out but I can't help it...please forgive me.)

what year did thom's mother die? was it 2001?
can't see anything of new york without thinking of 9/11, so, QE reminds me of 9/11. NYC is the sixth member of the fab five, if that makes sense.

I_LOVED_THIS_EPISODE. worthy & wonderful candidate, and, design-wise, can walls display enough black & white photography? i think not. should kyan & jai dance more often ... i think SO. even those big cookies looked good. would mention the clock, but ... don't think i need to.

Well said, well summarized - welcome to the boards!

Ted: "Well I am a little disappointed that he is not making coffee for them"

Kyan: "Well they didn't want any coffee though"

Carson: "He should have forced it on them"

Kyan: "Really?

Carson: "Yeah like Ted forces his...."

Ted elbows Carson here. What was Carson gonna say? I'm surprised no one has asked this question yet. I came to this board to find the answer but I am ending up writing a post for it myself. Thanx for the help
