You got that right. I know Toys R Us better than most employees. And I've already found a site where I can get an adult size Big Wheel, so when he's old enough, we can ride together. Remember that thunderous roar? Remember those relentless power slides? Nope, 'cause I didn't have one when I was a kid!

I was born 10 weeks early. I had a hole in my heart, but it grew in.
I forgot to add that I have a membership to the "Isoletes baby club" in Arizona.
LOL! My aunt wrote this for me shortly after I was born:
This is the story of Madelin
who just couldn't wait for life to begin
After 32 weeks in her mother's womb,
she decided that there just wasn't enough room
On May 14 at 4 o' clock
Her mother woke with a sudden shock
To Anchorage they rode in an ambulance
The doctors there were Maddie's only chance
At 3:25 she screamed and yelled
But she was too young and silence fell
Quickly they whisked here through the doors
to doctors who had done this before
Resuscitate, Intubate, oxygen, IV,
Two hours later Mom and Dad went to see
Tubes to her mounth, wire everywhere,
bu there was their baby, given good care
She was not happy, no, she was MAD!
She couldn't believe that life was this bad!
BEcause of the angry state she was in,
they decided to name her MADelin!
From Palmer to Anchorage and back again
Her family went to visit Madelin
Until at last (after a miserable night)
The doctors said everything would be alright
After all the trouble they had been through,
they finally brought her home on June 2

I can't wait! January is just around the corner, and that's when we go back to the normal schedule! So much fun! hehe...I'm giddy!

Congrats to you, too Deeva! TTB asked if I was nervous around Kyan, but I wasn't too terribly so. However, I knew that you (and I had thought TDF, before the baby was born - Congrats TDF on being an auntie and wishing the new baby well. Sorry we missed you there) would be there and so I was more nervous around other fans than with Kyan. You see, the campus police wouldn't let me in with my hand-me-down Cloak of Invisibility! So, although I figured that you'd be in the crowd somewhere, I dared not out myself. Could you have imagined if I'd told Kyan my screen name? LOL! You mentioned that you got a photo with Ky! Did you enter and win the raffle? Details, girl!!
I wish you would have outed yourself, MGK, but I can understand why you didn't.
As for any details, well, there's a long story and a.... slightly less long story. I'll give the "short" story so I don't hijack this thread.
So, the short of it is, the Learning Annex people were short staffed the day of Kyan's talk, and I got to the campus WAY earlier than I had thought I would (Mercury is in retrograde which can create communication challenges and technology snafus, as Kyan mentioned several times).
There were not enough Learning Annex people and too much work to do to get ready for Kyan. I had nothing to do (and didn't want to give up my rock star parking), can't really sit still as it is, and hate feeling useless. Another guy with a situation similar to mine showed up. We noticed one particular Learning Annex person seemed to be scrambling to get stuff done, so we offered to help.
They definitely worked us! We helped get stuff unpacked and set up, and were selling books before the show and during intermission. We had our names in the raffle. My helper buddy got his name called but I didn't.
So, as the line of winners dwindled, I just went up to one of the Learning Annex people and asked if it would be all right if I got my book signed and got a picture.
The L.A. guy, a really nice, nice man, said he was fine with it, provided Kyan's manager was fine with it as well.
It was all good! I chatted with Kyan for a couple of minutes about the whole Mercury in retrograde, got the picture taken, etc.
I didn't hug him, but I put my arm around him for the picture and I got a little back pat from him. He did seem so very calm ('serene' is another word that has become inextricably linked with Kyan in my mind) and I absolutely loved how he maintained eye contact with everyone.
He really listens to people. At one point, the young lady taking pictures interrupted something I was saying to ask, "Ready for your picture?" After it was taken, Kyan made a point to ask me to finish what I had been saying. I thought that was really nice.
I watched him with all the winners and he was so present and there for them. Does that make sense? It was like he gave his undivided attention to every person and was incapable of being distracted from them. It was very cool to observe him interacting one on one with each person. You could see him making eye contact with all of them, touching them, focusing on them, gesturing and laughing.
When my helper buddy had his turn, he called up his nephew, who's a big fan of the show, and surprised him by getting Kyan to talk to him. Kyan was a great sport about it!
I was very impressed with his integrity and walked away from the entire experience thinking he's just an amazing human being.
So all in all, it was a good day!
I really wish Isa had been there...
Now if my pictures will just turn out.......

I never did, either! I still remember those commercials with the kids hitting that brake thing and going into the slide. That was quite possibly the coolest thing EVER when I was about seven!
And who knew they make adult Big Wheels?!!? Good times ahead for you and Ryan! I wonder who will have more fun?

I honestly believe things happen when they're supposed to happen. We can only guess at the reasons. I empathize with your feelings of frustration and sadness but I think your time will come and, when it does, it will have been worth the wait.

Thanks everyone for posting all the great details so far.
I have one little (or not so little) request - could someone please try to recap what he said in his speech and Q&A? I mean, so far I've read he said he was shy in a crowd, talked about his life and insecurities and mentioned astrology, but nobody's really posted about what he said. Not that I'm not sure everyone loves hearing about the jeans, the hair, the scent, the... the neck skin [lol] (which I do, although probably not as much as the straight girls here ), just I'm a lot more interested in finding out more about him as a person, and no-one's gone into any detail about his speech yet - what did he say about his life? What did he say about his insecurities? Did he talk about his family, Greg/love life, what details did he give about his childhood and interests? C'mon people! (You can leave out the beauty parts - well I mean obviously you don't have to; I'm not trying to stop you - but from other interviews/talks it sounds like it's all either stuff from the book or personal, individual problems.)
PS. I'm having the worst week (moving, among other things) ever, so if anything I post this week comes across as abrupt, bitchy or erratic, there's a reason and I'm sorry.
PPS. Re: Kyan's cologne (obsessive know-all alert): Kyan said he only wears blends of essential oils, not regular cologne, which is probably why you couldn't identify it.
PPPS. Two months preemie here! (And congrats, Isa.)
PPPPS. Is Greg ever even begins to develop a mullet, I personally am planning to head a mullet-intervention (or mulletention) squad. Since when do people consciously choose to have a mullet, anyway? I always thought mullets were just horrible freak accidents, like punishments from God for using 2-in-1 or something. Sometimes bad hair happends to good people.

Yeah, there's a kid that plays clarinet in my band that has a mullet. That and he wears sweat pants - with the ELASTIC on the bottom - every day. It's hard to imagine my brother was like that at my age (he's ten years older than me) because he grew up to be this awesome wildernessy/technology biology funny good dancer all-around cool kinda guy =P With a good haircut.

Naomi, I'll try to tell you what I remember, but it won't be in any order, and probably won't be very "recap-ish."
OH, and SPOILERS if anyone going to the MN seminar doesn't want a hint of what might be in store for them. Based on how free-form it was, you all might get a completely different seminar than the San Diego one. But stop reading now if you don't want to know...just in case.
He had a Power Point presentation to prompt him (try saying that five times fast) that was mostly just talking points.
Like his whole philosophy is that there's only one you in the whole world, not only now, but in addition to everyone who has come before us all, so why not be the best that you can be?
He discussed the difference between being good looking and being beautiful. Good looking is more a factor of genetics and knowing how to look good...being beautiful is about the whole package, inside and out, having a beautiful soul as well as taking care of your physical self. He used the analogy that we're all familiar with: knowing someone and thinking they are cute in the beginning, but having them become more and more beautiful as you get to know them better. And, of course, the reverse, meeting a total hottie who ceases to be the second they open their mouth.
He talked about growing up in Florida and moving at some point to, I think it was Tallahassee, which he fondly called the "Redneck Riviera."
Wasn't athletic as a kid and could have cared less about school. Just simply was not interested.
Has lived in a number of places including Texas, New Orleans and New York. I think he said he attended college in New Orleans but he didn't go into much detail other than to say how glad he is that he attended to his education.
Has always followed his little inner voice, even when what he was doing didn't make much sense to the people around him. After he got cast in QE his dad's reaction was (in addition to being happy for him) something to the effect of, "Well, I guess you've been doing what you're supposed to be doing this whole time."
His father is the person he most admires in the world. He told a brief story about how his dad grew up in poverty and how hard he's worked over the course of his life. He says he admires his boyfriend in a similar way, but didn't go into detail and focused on his father.
Used to love to watch his mom put on her make up. He said he could tell that it empowered her, especially her lipstick. He did a hilarious mimic of her putting it on and smacking her lips to finish.
He did talk about having basic routines for hair and skin and got a little into make up. If I remember right, at this point things sort of dissolved into an impromptu Q&A before the official Q&A but he covered basic routines to adopt based on your skin type and hair type.
He also discussed diet and how the big baddies in a lot of people's lives are caffeine and sugar, two of my personal favorites. He encouraged people to limit their caffeine intake to no more than, say, two cups of coffee a day, and to cut back on sugar. Eating sugar causes a massive chemical chain reaction in your body that makes your system glom on to whatever fat you've consumed with that sugar.
Somewhere in all of this was a five minute intermission. Given that, I'll stop here for this post, 'cause it's getting long. More to follow....

He talked about putting consciousness into your living space. He noted that he's lived in a lot of places, some of which he just sort of used as a place to crash and store his stuff, and others where he made an effort to turn it into a comfortable living space. He said he could really notice a difference in his overall well being when he had his place looking the way he wanted it to look.
I know I'm forgetting stuff, but moving on to the Q&A....
Most people had questions specific to themselves. A couple of people had questions about the show.
We learned that when they filmed the video, he, and I think he said either Carson or Ted, were the last to finish their part of the filming and by the time they were done they'd put in over 24 hours almost straight through.
They film each ep. over about three days. Somehow this led him to my favorite subject, Thom, and how he has only about 36 hours to pull the design stuff together. Yes he has a team of helpers, which was no new info, and yes, he does get in there and work just as hard as they do. That's my boy!
He made some comment about one of the Fab 5 messing up their outfit and Carson having a fit. "The couture, the couture!"
He said other than the whole bit about it seeming like the transformation occurs in one day, the show's not scripted (so there, Joel Stein!). He said that when you see the Fab 5 all cutting up and making fun of each other, that's 100% real. He commented that he thought the casting people had really pulled together a magical combination of personalities when they cast everybody. He was one of, I think he said five other guys, up for the part of the grooming guru.
Someone asked him if he might consider teaching or lecturing because he was so approachable and natural. He seemed flattered and after thinking about it for a minute, he said that sounded interesting to him.
Someone asked him something about astrology and being a Taurus. I don't remember exactly what the question was but I think it had something to do with Taureans appreciating the finer things in life and he's so healthy, etc. He cracked that he fights the nature of his sign practically every day. He loves good food, good wine, sleeping late, etc. and has to be regimented.
Now I'm only starting to remember little things. Someone asked about QE for the Straight Girl and if the FF would be doing the make betters. He did a little sort of impromptu pitch for the show and said that he'd met the cast and really dug them.
Said QE might start traveling to other parts of the country like they did in Texas. He said he really wants to go to middle America with the show.
Said he loves concealer for under his eyes (calls it "Bag Be Gone") and a bronzer to even out his skin tone, but otherwise is not big into man make up. Someone asked him something about this. I also read "Beautified" cover to cover and I know he mentioned something about this in the book. It's about two hours past my bedtime and I'm having a hard time remembering what I've read vs. what I actually heard.
One funny part of the Q&A (OK, it was funny to me) was when a woman got up and started asking questions for her sister, who was shy or didn't want to ask for herself or something. The questions were about skin care, I think. At some point Kyan kind of started laughing at this woman, and, referring to her sister, said, "She's so going to kill you later!" His delivery was really cute.
Someone asked him about his spirituality. He was really big into Native American spiritualism for a while. He participated in some of their rituals in the steam houses. He's also interested in a number of other religions including the Kabbalah. I'm pretty sure the Zohar (thanks ISA) is a Kabbalah text that he reads frequently. I think he said that he also studies or reads the Bible a lot. God seems very present in his life.
And I'm about out of steam. I'm also not very good with unaided recall, and I apologize in advance if I remembered something wrong.

Ooooh, you get to see Carson tomorrow! Here's more vibes for no snow for you....I didn't sleep much the night before, either. It's like a rite of passage or dues to pay, or something.
You realize we're all gonna be dying on the vine, expecting a minute by minute recount, right?

Its almost 11 hours until I leave and I can't sleep!
Okay, since I can't sleep, I'll tell y'all what I got him.
I sold my used textbooks today since there's no more need for them, and used the money to buy some stuff for Carson. I bought a shirt promoting my school that I think he would look nice in, it would bring out the highlights in his hair. Then I got a CD of relaxing celtic music so if there's ever a time where Carson needs to wind down. I also got a pack of 6 stemware bracelets that circle the stem of the glasses in different colors. I got him a little trinket box that's beaded and inside there is a pillow that I made from rich purple velvet. Resting on the pillow is a necklace that has blue beads on it and in the center there is a tiny vase holding a grain of rice and tiny blue rose. On the grain of rice on one side it says "Carson" and on the other it says "With love, JG (heart)" and instead of JG it has my real name. Then, there is an anthology of stories written by board members along with Tomasulo's screenplay that are bound. Then all of this stuff is placed in a bright pink bag with pale pink tissue paper. Then, when I'm picking up the girl I'm taking along with me, I'm buying a dozen pink roses.
I realized it a little while ago that the color of the bag, matches the color of the shirt I'm going to be wearing. Creepy...

I just wanted to pop in here and say that I'm leaving in 2 hours 45 minutes!
I looked outside this morning and Thank Gohd! There is no snow outside and the skies are blue! This could be easier to sneak over there than I thought!

He talked about growing up in Florida and moving at some point to, I think it was Tallahassee, which he fondly called the "Redneck Riviera."
Yes. I've read that the family moved to Tallahassee when he was, I think, around 5-ish. "Redneck Riveria". LOL

Has lived in a number of places including Texas, New Orleans and New York. I think he said he attended college in New Orleans but he didn't go into much detail other than to say how glad he is that he attended to his education.
Yep. He graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans.

His father is the person he most admires in the world. He told a brief story about how his dad grew up in poverty and how hard he's worked over the course of his life. He says he admires his boyfriend in a similar way, but didn't go into detail and focused on his father.
That's cool!

He also discussed diet and how the big baddies in a lot of people's lives are caffeine and sugar, two of my personal favorites. He encouraged people to limit their caffeine intake to no more than, say, two cups of coffee a day, and to cut back on sugar.
So, just how "big" can these 2 cups be?
Quote:
Eating sugar causes a massive chemical chain reaction in your body that makes your system glom on to whatever fat you've consumed with that sugar.
Well, isn't he just the party pooper?

Somewhere in all of this was a five minute intermission. Given that, I'll stop here for this post, 'cause it's getting long. More to follow....
GREAT stuff so far!

Yeah, I can see that. The more you can personalize your space, the more it seems "yours".

We learned that when they filmed the video, he, and I think he said either Carson or Ted, were the last to finish their part of the filming and by the time they were done they'd put in over 24 hours almost straight through.
YIKES!
Quote:
They film each ep. over about three days. Somehow this led him to my favorite subject, Thom, and how he has only about 36 hours to pull the design stuff together. Yes he has a team of helpers, which was no new info, and yes, he does get in there and work just as hard as they do.
And, I'm always amazed with how wonderful the homes look after Thom & Co. finished. Heck, it takes me at least 3 days to THINK about what I want to do, much less DO it in 36 hours!
Quote:
He made some comment about one of the Fab 5 messing up their outfit and Carson having a fit. "The couture, the couture!"
I can see this happening!

I wonder if someone's going to ask him specifically about that article at the MN session.

He commented that he thought the casting people had really pulled together a magical combination of personalities when they cast everybody.
I think that's why all the other versions of the show really haven't taken off like this one has.

I think I do too. Capricorns are suppose to be money misers. I spend wayyy too much!

Carson would go crazy over all the flannel we wear in these cold states!

That explains that Kabbalah string seen on a couple of episodes. In a Q&A I've read he mention a favorite possession being a ceramic Buddha, so it looks like he's studied many religions. Very cool.

KCee: I'm a Capricorn, too.....and btw, we're very compatible with Taureans. I hadn't realized Kyan was Taurus...interesting that 3 of the 5 guys are Taureans, if I'm not mistaken.
