Amen to That
After tonight.......I will never be a faithful supporter of Project Runway. The first season was a disappointment, and I still continued to watch. However, it was blatantly clear that the top three were Uli, Michael, and Laura. I thought Jeffery would have been the first out. Not only did they keep him....he had a horrible attitude the whole season, he was definitely inconsistent, the majority of the viewers didn't vote for him, there was suspicions about his integrity, and he went way over budget. Aside from all of those things, he was already successful in his own personal endeavors, and it is very obvious that he only appeals to one specific sector. If this show was intended to relate to normal people as well as fashionistas (is that a word?), and celebrities, the people the producers chose for judges were not reaching out to the what the viewers wanted, and damn sure was not Jeffery!
Now, on the other hand, Laura was definitely consistent throughout the whole season. Although I agree with the judges saying she needed to broaden her horizons, you cannot deny she is an excellent designer. What she did in the finale was phenomenal! Though her main focus was on evening wear. She changed it up for those "Red Carpeters". No one can deny that the lace dress with the pants was innovative, her signature piece was right on time, and carefully put together with colors and detailing. If I had a "Red Carpet" event, I would definitely give her a call first.
My roots are South Floridian, and Uli's designs portrayed my environment growing up to the "T" when spending all of my holidays in lovely sunny Florida, and I loved her simplistic, yet glamorous combinations. They would be great pieces, but those would be the things that I would buy only to wear once.....just for "oooh's and aaaah's" But her pieces were sensational!
Although I really wanted Michael to win, (I expected Uli to take home the victory after watching the fashion show)only because he was consistent throughout the whole season, and he knew a womans body so well, it almost made me question him, and scared me at the same time. I absolutely loved Michael the entire season. However, his finale collection was not what I expected from him, he makes things that every women could and would want to wear. I know he is good, and he is way beyond "potential". Potential is for a teenage girl/boy who is pretty good, but still needing a little more soul searching. For Heidi to say that to him was a real insult, I even took it personal.
My reason in sending this email is, without the viewers, there would be no 'Project Runway' I think the show should be based on how the viewers feel at least a little, versus what 3 snobbish judges believe is good. What the network and producers need to realize is that all 'Project Runway' viewers do not read Elle Magazine, and all viewers do not look like Heidi Klum after 1 or 2 babies, and all the viewers do not wear Michael Kors (I do, Kudos to Michael! (

So, in saying that, 'Project Runway' is supposed to be a stepping stone for an aspiring designer....Hell, look at the prizes: mentorship......$$$ to start their own line....and a fashion spread in one of the top magazine publications! I and many others, am sure that this final decision was definitely bias. If it wasn't for the type of audience that Elle reached out to, and what is in this season or following seasons to come in and out of fashion, the grand prize should have been awarded to either Michael, Laura, or Uli. I am sure they could have really used the mentoring from I.N.C. that would have helped them, and given them the opportunity to learn more, and broaden their collections, and develop them professionally in the fashion world. Jeffery on the other hand has a pretty successful business appealing to his rock star clients, and it is obvious that he is not going to steer away from that anytime soon. His collection was not as good as the others. And for you to look at all the time and energy the other three spent on their work without the help of outsiders, they did exactly what they envisioned and stayed under budget. While Jeffrey on the other hand had help. That is very unfair. Hell, Laura did beading and sequins by herself. She put a lot of time into her work and you would have never imagined the pieces she had come down that runway to come from an amateur. I feel the same about Uli's choices in accessories and details, her line was very thought out and executed wonderfully. And with Michael, he came back to NY, made changes, and still pulled his designs off. He really made you feel like "damn...I would buy and wear that a few times..." as did Laura and Uli. Jeffrey was way out of the hemisphere for a lot of people. His line was built celebrity specific....It was interesting, but nothing I would consciously put effort into buying.
Don't be misunderstood by my opinions, I know last season Chloe, my fellow Houstonian won, and she has her own business as well (Where I have been a faithful shopper for many years! Love Lot 8! ) But, no one can deny, Chloe was consistent to the very end, and she earned that grand prize. Hands down, she was the best there. Now I did love Daniel just as much, but bottom-line, Chloe set the bar every single challenge. She earned and deserved to win last season. Now first season, Austin was my absolute favorite, but I understand why he didn't win (too way over the top a lot of the time, but wonderful as well), but to choose crazy ass Jay was just ridiculous, his line was not as good as the others at all.
My suggestion is maybe in future seasons they should chose another magazine for the spread, maybe another designer judge, and hell someone to help Heidi. Just to change the environment a little. It just seems like the panel is too biased, and it is unfair to the contestants. I think there should be 2 to 3 types of designers judging, and maybe a magazine that has a variety of consumers that they reach out to all in one magazine.
Those are just my thoughts, but I do know unless something changes, I will not be watching Project Runway again.
