Welcome to the message boards thread for "Top Chef" episode 202, "Eastern Promise". Our chefs draw knives to be assigned to one of two teams, Team Korea or Team Vietnam. But drama and controversy ensue. (Hey, this is Bravo.) Can our chefs pull off a Far East Feast without incident? Discuss the episode here and let us know what you think.
And don't forget to come back to the site tomorrow morning for the latest online video from "Top Chef" season 1 competitor Lee Anne Wong: "The Wong Way To Cook"! She'll be making the winning recipe from tonight's episode.

**This as I am sitting square-eyed in front of the tube eagerly awaiting TC to start DARING anyone to even think about touching the remote control, much less change the channel.**

Haven't decided who I like the best yet, too many to choose from. Know who I don't like so far, but will wait for a couple of weeks to make sure my instincts are valid!

I love their blog, especially those interviews!
Waiting for tonight's eposide, I've been trying to catch up on the few episodes of season 1 that I missed. Bravo seems to have replayed all of the shows.....except the reunion show, which I really wanted to see! Anyone know why they won't re-show that?

If they're going to execute a Korean-style dish, this team should have done their homework. For example, lychees have nothing to do with Korean cuisine, it's just represented the wrong way. Just slapping on "Asian" ingredients such as curry and lychee doesn't make it legit.

I feel that Otto was not 100% at fault. I feel that since she overheard him she should have stopped at said something. Just letting it go like she did does nothing. She had plenty of time to question Otto about it and never did. She also should have brought it up to the team. It's a team effort and the team wasn't a team.

All right... so far I've lurked in TC and PR land, but I have to say... I think Otto's an amazing guy. I was soooo turned off by his clips in the preview, but everything I've read since about his efforts in contributing to ending world hunger, to his decision to bow out tonight... he's a good guy.

I can't completely diagree as she was a bit odd in it, but she did come forth while the others did not. That has to be stated. I also think Marcel is an issue. He was not supportive at all. None really were. This was not a team. the show was rather diappointing!

Im a little conflicted here...I think Otto did the honorable thing even while Im thinking he knew he had no choice being backed in the corner
Then Im getting rubbed the wrong way by Marissa because she shouldve said something in the car in front of the whole team "Hey Otto, check to see if those were paid for!" haha
then it wouldve involved everyone.
Hahah...to who said Mia sat there with Tiff's porn cookies!

I agree with that, all the judges had to do was check the tape to know that Otto was lying if he hadn't accepted the responsibility for taking unpaid supplies. though marissa came across as the villain, she did the right thing, if she had stayed quiet that would mean she accepts his misdeed. And if Frank meant that they had to stay as a 'team' by covering up for Otto taking unpaid stuff... then that's wrong as well. Loving Elia, her quote on loving fish, butchering them, swimming with them, and eating them was funny.

Otto mentioned not paying for the ingredient to Marissa at the store. She should have told him what she thought then. She should have said, "Oh, well, we'd better take it back," or "Let's have a quick meeting" or SOMETHING. But no. He put it on the table, and she just ignored it. No one would ever have known if he hadn't mentioned it. If he wanted to be deceitful he would have just never mentioned it at all. By bringing it up, he was getting another person's opinion.
I think Marissa should have left for her crappy dessert and for her failure to step up to the plate at the store. AND for her willingness to throw him under the bus later. Otto didn't say, "Oh hey! Guess what! We got free stuff! Who hoo!" He sounded concerned.
I really think Otto WAS caught up in the moment. He didn't know what to do. So he brought it to Marissa's attention. He was probably going through the possible scenarios in his head: dragging all the stuff out, trying to figure out what to take back, how much time that would take, how everyone would be pissed off...and how much easier it would be to just blow it off. So he asked Marissa and she did NOTHING. Until she blew the whistle and made Otto look like a thief. Lack of character.
Marcel looked better in this episode. The trailer for next week has him looking pretty bad, but he was pretty cool in this one.
I like Elia. She is just different. She isn't really emotional or perky. But she is nice, I think.
I like Betty a lot. I am glad she won.
I think Marissa would have been gone if Otto hadn't of backed out. The judges said that it was her dessert that caused them to lose. Not Otto and not the rice.
Oh, and I just have to say that I like Padma MUCH better than I liked Katie. I was prepared to not like her based on some of the comments here, but she's okay in my book. She's not a robot, and she doesn't tell people to pack their knives and go like she is ordering them into the death chamber because they murdered her dog.

I agree with your statement. Think Otto went to far. He took the hit, returned the item and then fell on the sword.
Marissa was so outraged she couldn't make her will know at the store. Instead she chooses to tear the team apart and report to Tom. She is a pastery chef and fails terribly at that task. She turns on her desert helper and doesn't even allow her to finish her comment. Otto in the spirit of competition made an observation that they did not pay for something and he paid the price. Did Marissa pay for her mistakes.
Did the other team members care about the leaches. Team worked poorly together and if the desert was good, combined with the good pork dish they could have won. So tell me how the leches had anything to do with this teams failure. Think highly of Otto, Marissa values are very selfserving and her skills as a chef are very questionable.

Look I'm not saying that its ok to be dishonest. I'm just saying in the grand scheme of the contest here Marissa's cooking would have been and should have been the issue. She got very lucky that Otto made that mistake and EXTREMELY lucky that it that it went down at the same time she was the weak link and her being an after the fact whistleblower isn't exactly honest either.

A very interesting episode. More than enough blame to go around. When Otto thought (at the car he talked as if he wasn't sure if the lychees had been paid for) that the lychees were overlooked by the checkout person, he should have asked for the receipt to check. When (is her name Marissa?) thought he had dishonestly stolen the lychees, she should have confronted him. If she had, they could have looked at the receipts and found out what was what, and returned them before the competition began. But, not every one has the strength of character to confront (which may be her downfall - honesty counts, but so does taking a stand for what you believe in - versus grandstanding or tattling - not that I am convinced what her motives were).
As for Otto pulling out - he is an instructor - he was in the bottom in challenge one, in the bottom in challenge two - and with his integrity on the line. He had utterly no choice but to act as he did - to try to save as much face as possible and keep his real career as a teacher of others intact. His bowing out seems to prove beyond doubt that he used really bad judgment over the lychees, but I don't think he would actively steal - but would take advantage of a mistake. I think he weighed the options and thought a clean breast of it was less damaging than probably continuing in the bottom. As a human in the real world he seems a grand hearted, giving and caring man - and sometimes people like that let their emotions take over them...I imagine his motives were mixed.
Team Vietnam mostly was wise enough to pull together as a team - easier for them perhaps as they had someone familiar with the cuisine, and two chefs used to catering.
There was one malcontent in the Vietman group (I'll bet he would have made Team Korea even more disfunctional) [I'll get better with the names eventually...] but there were many more overly competitive non-collaboratives in the Korean group.
Nice guys and gals do win in the end (a la Harold) yet, America loves the rascals (Tom Sawyer). So far, interesting challenges and a crew I've not pegged into slots. Makes Weds. worth the wait.

I completely agree. The only thing that was anywhere near a Korean dish was the pork and kimchi. I know because I AM Korean. Koreans don't normally use lychees, or at least I don't. And the dessert was way off. Just because it was made from ingredients that Koreans use, doesn't mean it's Korean! That's just dumb reasoning. I'm also a bit insulted that they were getting drunk while trying to figure out what dishes to make. It's as if they weren't taking it seriously. I'm disappointed in them.

If the Korean team won the pancotta was great and they used the "ill-obtained" lychees we would be complaining about how unfare it was to the Vietnam team.
Besides the Otto thing Marissa will dig her own grave with her general attitude. I don't think her pastry "skills" make her a competitor to be worried about.
