If you don't like the heat, then get outta the kitchen! But for our Winston and Kay, it's the only place they want to be. What did you think of the Wall streeter following his dream of being a restauranteur? Discuss right here.

I think it was a bit irresponsible of him to sink all of his money into a venture he knew nothing about. He was most likely trying to impress his girlfriend, and from what I've heard of the restaurant so far he's succeeded pretty well. Kay's cooking is getting great reviews, as is Tom's decorating. I'm sure the publicity of being on TV didn't hurt, either!

Well, where is everyone. It says there are 140 posts so far but I don't see them.
This was a good episode. It was quite dramatic!! Would Winston and Kay make their deadline? Would the food editors like the food? Would the rash be infectious?
First and foremost--I was blown away by Thom's design of the restaurant. We all know he does amazing things with homes and apartments. And I saw the pics of the Wierd Science space, but to take that sterile, narrow commercial space and with some paint and lighting fixtures make it a cozy restaurant was wonderful. SNAPS x 10!
What he did to the apartment wasn't bad either, considering he had that huge focus I loved the bedroom treatment and the colors.
Is is my imagination or have the guys suddenly begun to show the sheer fun they are having? They've always been professional in their demeanor. Smiles, laughter, but in recent weeks (I would say since John K) they are just overall giddy with fun. Especially Kyan--He has the greatest smile (GRIN!) when he is clearly enjoying himself.
I was glad to see him back in the grooming biz again. He was so sensitive to Winston's issues. But had a lot of fun showing W along with the others just how too much gel can ruin a hairstyle. Liked the doctor who worked on W's face and looked at his rash. We didn't have to see the ugly parts of the facial but it was clear she had made a major improvement in his complexion.
I would love to adopt Jai for my own son. He is the most sensitive person. He always makes eye contact and really actively listens to everything that is being said. Then he makes suggestions and repeats back the things he has heard. The nest time some expert does a seminar or a video on active listening he should use videos of Jai as a model!
And then there was Ted. He is so great at teaching others how to prepare food so it was especially neat to see him talking to a colleague, Kay. I loved that they could discuss the food she was preparing and that he really appreciated her work. His suggestion of organic wines was creative genius. And to arrange for a couple of food editors to attend the opening was gutsy but great for a new restaurant.
Carson, Carson, tonight was your minimal night but you still came out on top! The clothing and suggestions for Winston to use his suit coats were so good! What, you don't like a plethora of plaid?
Okay, these are my first reactions. Can't wait to read other folks.
Cheers,
SLB

I really liked this episode! I'm really glad that the critics liked Kay's cooking. I don't really think that they would have made it without the Fab 5's help. Thom did a wonderful job with the decorating! The atmosphere was a lot warmer--the white was just too much! Share actually sounds like a great place to go! If I lived in New York, I would go there. I really liked the shirt that Carson picked out for Winston. It was much better than plaid. I couldn't believe how much plaid he had! ("And just when you thought there was no more plaid left in the world!") ...I noticed about half way through the episode that Ted and Thom's shirt's matched. Not identical, but they both had the browns and stripes on one side...
Poor Ted and Kyan, they got gelled. --"You know what, what goes around comes around. I got your back Teddy."
I wonder how Kyan fixed his hair after it looked like "he just got lucky" as Ted stated.
I thought it was good that Jai showed Winston how to greet the guests. But a bit of a blunder with messing up the names! And, oh, Jai, what are you doing with your arm around Kay? Bad!
Overall, this was a good episode. I hope that Share does well!

I got the impression that they'd done a lot of research on running a restaurant, and his girlfriend did at least have considerable experience as a chef. They knew the niche they were after too, with the organic food and specialized dishes. BUT, it did seem bordering on madness to invest your entire life savings into a NY restaurant. Of course, I spent way too much time in my misspent youth waiting tables and washing dishes and being a surly, miserable restaurant worker so that's the last thing I'd EVER do in a gazillion years.
I did enjoy this episode, kind of to my surprise. It didn't sound all that thrilling, but I really liked seeing them do something so different. And do it so well. Thom is a magician, that's all there is to it.

Not irresponsible, commendable!! That was his dream and he shared it with the woman he loved. And that's a big part of love, sharing something that means alot to you - something special - sharing your dreams. It's something I would do if I had the money...set some aside for my child's college years then invest in my dreams. The corporate world can get stuffy, I don't blame him for breaking away.
It's funny, today my boss asked me why I wasn't going back to college this semester. When I told him why, he said "Don't give up. There's other things out there besides this." He knows I don't belong there, not in that field, but he tolerates me - he's a great boss.
On to the show, can I praise my husband Thom enough?! NO! Ok, the restaurant was SCARY beforehand. All white? Wow, that wasn't good. But bring in Thom with a little bronze paint and some well placed candles and I swear, my jaw dropped...then I looked at the restaurant
NOOOOOO!! HORSIE!! THE HORSIE FELL INTO THE FLOOD WATERS!! WHY DIDN'T THE CAMERAMAN SAVE THE HORSIE!! Ok, horsie swimming, I think it'll make it. Sorry, Storm Stories.
Back to my boys - about Winston...I don't think I could ever be upset with him. He smiles all the time! How can you be mad at someone who smiles all the time? He was a really good fellow (not good fella's!) and I'm glad his and Kay's business is thriving.
I think this episode focused more on Ted, which I don't mind at all because he rocks! His expertise was showing in his worry and it showed just how professional he is in his field. The episode was a display of Ted's skills; if they show one like that in Jai's favor, then the five will be complete - exhibition-wise

As I quote Ted, "Speaking of being brutally honest, you're opening up a restaurant, you're crazy!"
Okay, so it wasn't exactly that, but I can't remember it...
But Kay was a very good chef, and the first day did go well.

Kyan's hair seems like it's back to its chestnut color. Maybe this ep was made before the last few when his hair looked darker. I thought his outfit (during the time with the SG) seemed a bit plain. Ah, but during the reveal, he wore white pants and spread his legs as he sat there! Too bad that doggone wine bottle and Jai's glass sometimes blocked my view. I couldn't tell whether the shirt Ky wore in the Batcave was tomato red or red orange, but I liked it and I take back my previous snark on another thread about him not looking as good in that shade as I do. I also liked his hair during the reveal. It looked soft, touchable, clean and productless. Ky said earlier to our Asian SG how coarse hair does better with emolient products. Now, Ky has medium-textured hair, but as he said in the QE book, it's also dry and a bit poufy. Ky uses pomade sometimes. Other than him, can Caucasians really get away with that without looking like part of an accapella group? All of my hair products must be 100% oil-free. Otherwise, even if I use just an iota of the oil-containing product, my hair gets so gross and unmanageable. I loved seeing Ky's buff arms in his Hip Tip.
Ted's outfit during the main part of the show was fierce! I don't drool over Ted, but I noticed that during the reveal, he showed some chest hair.
I liked when Jai said, "I can't wait to see Cher!" His Hip Tip was very useful!
Thom was right on with his comments about the urine sample and being on a ship and needing to make the restaurant more homey. But I still don't like that they did the SG's home and restaurant.
I liked the couture that Carson picked out, but I didn't think it was age-appropriate for that SG.
I may be alone in this, but I found this episode to be a bit "meh". I don't remember many laugh-out-loud or SQUEE moments. Maybe for me it pales in comparison to last week's show. It focused too much on the SG and his GF and not enough on Kyan. In fact, I was sitting there anticipating the Hip Tips. While I do admire the GF for her career as a chef because she gets to follow her heart and be creative, if I was the SG, I'd burn out on sacrificing what I know for her dream. *sigh* The things we do for love. I agreed with the SG's relatives when they expressed their apprehension. They're not even married and going into business together! I didn't expect the derm to be wearing that showgirl-style hairpiece.

It was not irresponsible of him! It was wonderful! Trying something new is always good, it gets you experience. I mean, what if something happens to the business? (knocking very hard on wood!) He'll be able to start over, just in case, with that experience.
Anyway...back to the show!
I have to say that I loved Kyan's hip tip. It had me splashing cold water on my face. The PJs to the black tank All of the tips were great though.
Is it just me or it Thom getting more muscular? If he's been working out, it totally shows! I really loved what he did with the restaurant, it seems more intimate than it did with all of that white.
Jai, you don't have to worry. There is no way that I am becoming one of Thom's wives or a Kyanite. I am an Angel forever. You're just as hott as you always have been and the advice that you gave Winston will probably help him for a long time!
Carson did wonderfully on the clothing! I was clapping when Winston chose that outfit-it looks great on him!
I'm glad that Kay took Ted's advice since Ted does know best! Really good that he agreed with the food editors.
Overall, great show-the guys were great (as always! ) and Winston, I hope you have great success in your restaurant!

We'll drop in and dine with Kay and Winston right after we visit the Noguchi Museum. (First date will be The Rainbow Room, remember? And fourth date?.....I'm thinking Italy. How does that sound, Pumpkin?).....gotta run now, men in white suits approaching...and this time they're armed. Don't panic....I think they're just tranquilizer guns. I'll post again when I wake up.

This was simply the cutest, wasn't it? Winston was warm and gracious and welcoming from the get-go. I've never seen anyone so in love with their life and the wide open future - let alone their significant other (all at the same time) in a very long time. His charming joyful demeanor was just contagious!
When the article came out in (MAY? JUNE?) and was posted here on the boards about Thom designing a restaurant, I just imagined him having to work over a large space. Sheesh! This tiny spot was a fourth the size of Chris Lim's Wedding Reception TENT! I wonder how they will be able to maintain in such a tiny venue...
I loved Ted getting the loud colored pants this time. It was hysterical. After Carson's wild ensemble last week - Winston's episode couture made Carson almost look bland, LOL! And HOW could he EVAH be so? I did have to giggle at them wearing white jeans, shoes and belts on a show airing RIGHT after Labor Day. Ah, the irony...
Ted was a wonderful asset to Winston and Kay. The food was beautiful and well presented. --A truly fitting meal for Thom's beautiful design.-- But Ted's suggestion of needing more acidity mirroring the Food critic really told me Ted truly does know his stuff! (As if there were EVAH any doubt?!) I loved the fact that he found Organic Wines to compliment the Organic Cuisine. Ted knows how to balance all the details in fine dining! (**Snaps,** hon!)
I thought it was hysterical seeing Ted and Kyan getting tangled up and falling all over each other when Kyan put gell in Ted's hair - and YEAH JAI for getting Teddy's back by gelling Kyan right back! (OOOoooo! "This is your hair on gel!" Not a pretty sight! ) I liked the Spa/Doctor's office of Soho Integrated Health. Kyan was so funny laughing about Winston's yeast infection. I appreciated knowing how often to do a skin peel... some places say once a week, some say every couple of months... I'll go with Ky's notation. It seems like there are more and more products out there made for men - especially since this show. That's just too cool!
This is the time just before returning to RENT that Jai looked a tad bit heavy when on Ryan Seacrest's talk show. He looked a little heavy in that grey suit. Gorgeous - but a tad heavy. I love that he's slimmed back now. His idea of taking Winston for a walk around the neighborhood to get an understanding of how the long timers have managed to maintain their business was not only a great idea in the short run - but also the long run. The folks in the neighborhood will be their primary customers. It's a good thing to know your neighbors so that they WILL want to be your customers! I also loved that Jai brought the Maitre D' from La Madre to help prepare Winston to be a good restaurant host.
Carson was amazing finding the perfect way to mesh Winston's corporate wardrobe with a more relaxed hip style in order to blend with his new business. I love that he made sure Winston's clothes were comfortable and shoes could handle the long days on his feet. The comments had me rolling as always, but my favorite was in Nicole Farhi... (Wouldn't a restaurant so near clothes put cooking smells in the clothes? Just wondering...) I loved when Carson took Winston into the kitchen with him - he said, "Now we're REALLY going to have you near an "OPEN FLAME!" LOL!
The mayhem of sitting down with the wait staff 45 minutes before opening, and the confusion with the food was frightening, as was the mixup with the critic's names... but all in all it was a lovely first day. I certainly hope Winston has kept smiling! It is obvious he loves Kay. ...I mean, to sacrifice all that you have to make your loved one's dream become your dream too? And then to do whatever it takes to make it a reality to showcase your partner's talents? **Swoon**
...And lastly? Speaking of "swoon?" The guys were each devistationly gorgeous at the reveal. I've never seen Carson's hair look better, That hot orange red on Kyan just made him glow, Jai was stunning in blue, Thom was frighteningly gorgeous in peach with those curls all grown back, and Ted sophisticated chic in that suit. I almost couldn't concentrate on anything that went on in the restaurant. ...Now - we all know our replendent Gentlemen Five are ALWAYS drop dead gorgeous... but in this epi - I don't know, they were breathtaking! **WHEW**
I think that's all I remember.... I really must do the note taking thing and do the billion word "De-cap" as Raindog called it. ...Sheesh - I haven't done that in weeks...
Peace and grace to you all, pets! --De

You and I definitely think different. I thought that his shirts in the two previous episodes were way too "busy" and this week he looked better. LOL

It looked orangy-red on my TV. Not many people can pull off that color (I certainly can't) but he looked good.

LOL, that's because he had a chance to wash out all that gel that Jai put in it. LOL.

I think it depends on how thick the hair is. I noticed in the book that many of the different product descriptions end with something like, "not recommended for fine hair". Kyan's hair looks pretty thick, so that could be why he can use those products. Personally, I'd look like I should be standing on the hood of a car singing "Greased Lightening".

Actually, I thought it looked like he was getting a bit of a tummy... if you looked at the stripes on his shirt, when he moved just right, he looked a tad pudgier than usual. Not that I have a problem with that, of course.
And I've got to wonder what's with the hair. Did they tape the reveal a good amount of time after they shot the rest, or was it just the way he combs it? The episode was his usual look (lately, anyway), the medium-length combed down, but the reveal was much like the first look we saw on him, pre-haircut, longer and wavier.

And is Carson getting a round tummy, or is it those danged hiphuggers he wears, especially with the big belts (though on this episode he wore that canvas white belt that looks like he might have stolen it from a sailor on leave-you know, a souvenir)?
Maybe it's from the Craft Service and the too long hours taping.

Cell phones, cell phones! Detroit is second to Altanta in the nation for per captia usage of cell phones, everyone has one! There is a time and place to use a cell phone, I can't BELIEVE where people use them!
Public restrooms. I can't tell you how many times I hear someone have a conversation while on the toilet!
I hate cells in restaurants and movies theaters but the ones who annoy me the most are those who can't use a phone in the car. Many metro Detroit cities have banned cell phone usage in cars due to accidents unless the the phone is hands free. OK, I admit, if I am driving next to a person on a phone who is paying more attention to the phone conversation than the road (like drifting into another lane, or sitting through an entire traffic light) I will lay on my horn, or if in summer, yell really loud for them to hang up or drive though open windows, when I know the person they are talking to can here me. I am secretly hoping to embarass. Maybe they will they will pull over to take that 'important' call next time.

The place I hear cellphones the most are in my own house. This is because my parents own their own business, and they have to carry their cells everywhere...
But anyways, I see/hear cellphones at places like Starbucks and at the mall.
Actually, it's very rare to see someone using a cellphone in Starbucks...maybe it's because it's so quiet in there, because everyone is enjoying their coffee, and people are actually kind enough to turn off their cellphones! Snaps for them!
Cellphones are quite a pain sometimes and are a danger to driving. It's just nice to use them when you really need to talk to somebody in a place where it won't disturb other people.

Other than him (Kyan), can Caucasians really get away with that (his hair style) without looking like part of an accapella group?

I agree! I don't think anyone else can pull off that hair style, and he pulls it off really well!
Well, actually I wasn't referring to his hairstyle in particular, but to the use of pomade.
"...and he pulls it off really well", huh? I'll just bet he does, but probably even better with my help! Oh! Wait, you weren't referring to that, now were you? My bad.

This show there seemed to be a wine glass or a wine bottle strategically placed in every shot. Coincidence ????? I think NOT !!!!! Think the 2 Daves and Kyan are playing a little game of TEASE ?????
I want Ky to do a nice, sexy Hip Tip like Thom's "little slice of heaven" one.

and ... do you find the shows where the subject is more 'well-to-do' less interesting? this one, the college golfer guy, the marine turned pharmacuetical salesman ... toupee guy -- also found that a bit lackluster.
(OT mental 180 time, but, tonight, it's all about the storm, so ...) ugh. miles o'brien is doing the hurricane coverage on CNN. i f!@#$%' hate that guy. almost brimming with glee in the science of it all.

Mrs Purse designer! Hilarious! and yes, yes, yes, I so agree with you.. although I love the Fab Five, the general consensus with everyone I discuss QE with, it's so true.
there are episodes that made people cry or cheer or applaud in their living rooms and there are others that I hear people say "yea, it was ok, I kind of flipped back and forth, cuz it was not all that interesting" Remember, not all of America is as embroiled in the FAB FIVE as us, and if the subject does not hold their attention, they're not happy just gazing at the beautiful boys like we are! I'm going back right now and pulling up the threads of my favorite episodes, just feel that need. And I am finished with the trauma going on with the Sean thread, can't this just be dropped already. Let everyone express their opinion, let it go by already, who cares, stop attacking each other, we are supposed to be here having fun.
By the way, Yes, it's great to hear from the straight guys, but Sorry, kill me, I find it so much more exciting when they stop by once in a while and fill us in, rather than a minute by minute blow of their daily life. AND I do agree with all the happy posters loving Sean... I liked his episode too, not one of the top five, but it was fun. However, I also think those who have varying opinions should not be attacked, nor think they are attacked. It's a message board, people! go out and get a life, and that includes you Sean. (who, by the way, still holds firm at posting 35% of his OWN POSTS!!!) AND still avoids answering the question about the blonde screaming about babies at the quick date thing. I'm posting this same entire thing on the Sean thread.. and I'm not sure if I love or hate the immediate posting thing!

Ok... It's been 4 months since I've done what Raindog teasingly refers to as a "De-Cap"... where I go over the episode commenting on absolutely everything that hit the screen...
I had convinced myself that I would recover from my silly falls and that the weakness in my hands would eventually fade. No such luck. I still am dropping letters and plunking away at a snail's pace... so for those of you who haven't been around when I do this... The posts are MANY and verbose... so be patient... writing this will happen very slowly. Please forgive me, I'm going to be quite rusty and will need multiple breaks. (And quite frankly, Winston and the Gentlemen Five deserve better!)
This was a really sweet episode... but as always, I really must give Carson his props for his work on the wardrobe first.

Sweetie, maybe you need to look into a program such as DragonSpeak (not sure that's the correct name). Oh wait. What am I thinking. For that program, one needs a computer not manufactured by Radio Shack!

Until I saw the rerun of the Vincent episode, I thought Jil Sander was a new designer in Carson's repertoire. Upon viewing Vincent and seeing the previous selection, I'm glad Carson repeated the designer in order to show additional pieces of the line. I wasn't terribly pleased with Jil Sander... but I appreciated that there were additional looks to view.
There are designers that don't go wild with the eccentricities, and yet the Fab 5 just looks FAB-U-LOUS, even though they could easily be mistaken for "ordinary" male looks. There are designers that go nuts with the little odd touches that create an AMAZING feast for the eyes. There are designers that go for the standard silhouettes or the odd quirky touches and it just totally misses as being an attractive look.
Jil Sander is a mixture of both sides.
Unfortunately, her work missed both times with the same dear cast member. I really hated the frumpy 1/2 overalls look that was on Jai in the Vincent episode, and the lovley silver gray suit on Jai was obviously not tailored to fit him. The result was two times Jai looked less than the perfect.
This was the time of year before he was returning to "RENT" and we saw the "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" and "The View" interviews and thought he had bulked up a bit. The Silver gray suit, gray button up shirt, and white shoes seemed to tight in the wrong places, and too loose in others. Most of the time, the suit was VERY wrinkled, and not in conventional places.
I was disappointed with the way Jai was dressed - save for the beautiful diamond stud earrings and was greatly relieved to see how delightful he looked during the reveal segment.
The deep blue, (almost black) dress slacks, belt and shoes with the silver blue Polo styled knit shirt were well fitting and showed off Jai's form as fit, not chunky. His hair was sleek and black and he looked absolutly de-lush-ous!
Kyan's white short sleeved oxford with the pale blue and yellow vertical striping with the black dress slacks, belt and shoes was a very conventional male look. It was reminiscent of Kyan in the Michael C. episode when he described his look (in a self deprecating manner ) calling it the look of a "Gay Mormon." (LOL!)
Kyan looked quite sharp, in my opinion, but it was clearly a case of the MAN making the clothes look good and not the other way around.
During the reveal - I honestly nearly hit the floor! Kyan has ALWAYS been TERRIBLY attractive in the color red, but LAWDY! When the elevator door lifted, Kyan in that tomato red long sleeved dress shirt, cream slacks, with cream belt and shoes was positively STELLAR! I loved how he came in sleeves down and then tszujed the sleeves before sitting! Kyan's hand may or may not be hands-on involved the daily work with the Gent's hair... (Christina Toale told us about the hair and makeup trailer with the stylist staff...) but you KNOW he has tremendous influence on what does occur. The Fab 5's hair was terribly attractive throughout the entire episode. I LOVED the sheen in Kyan's hair. Stunning.
I enjoyed Ted's look for the simple fact that Carson had worn such wildly patterned pants in the Sean episode just the week before.
Ted has always seemed most appropriately dressed while clothed in conservative fashions. The light weight medium brown jacket, tan short sleeved shirt with large white and dark brown verticle stripes down only one side was visually interesting... but the tomato red pants, belt and shoes were simply WILD looking on Teddy! HOW FUN! His hair was beautifully casual. I like that. Sometimes the hair stylist has taken dear Teddy all ducky-flippy or spikey - and while it provides diversity and visual interest... Ted looks much better when groomed simply.
I did so love the dark sage suit Ted was dressed in during the reveal! The pale gray dress shirt was exquisite against his skin. When Ted wore the same color in athletic style clothes during the Warren(?) episode, I really disliked the color on Ted. Now I know it was just the overly casual styles.
I don't know why I like Ted better in the corporate conservative looks... he's wonderously funny and comic - but the wilder side of couture just seems more customary on Carson, for whatever reason.
Now... Thom. WHEW! Lawdy! ...I didn't re-read the thread... but to the previous comment of "Thom looked a little heavy?" POOH! He wore a dark brown jacket over a dark brown, light weight knit pull over shirt, with medium brown and tan vertical stripes down one side. The shirt was beautifully form fitting showing that Thom had DEFINATELY been working out! He also wore dark brown dress slacks and shoes. The thin wire bracelet he wore amazes me. I've seen it in previous episodes - and I wonder if it is simply a hoop or if it has a clasp... but I never seem to get a good view of it. (Gee... just call me Mini-Tomasulo! ) I had viewed pictures of Thom in this ensemble months ago - but until he took his jacket off in "Share" - I had NO IDEA just HOW delictable he looked in the couture! **Swoon**
...Speaking of **swoon**? The reveal? HOLY FRIJOLES! His hair in those silky waves, peach dress shirt with tszujed sleeves 1/2 up the forearm, black dress slacks and light brown suede shoes. As with Kyan - my jaw dropped from the opening shot. Absolutely captivating!
Finally, dearest Carson. Goodness. Talk about your "Gay Mormon" looks. The clothing fit well and was richly detailed as befitting Carson worthy couture... but the light taupe short sleeved shirt, sky blue slacks, with white belt and white shoes was far too reminiscent of some 70's golfer's look for me. (Sorry Carson.) Jil Sanders misses again. ...and then so swiftly scores!
**Stunned** Carson during the reveal was DEVISTATING. I didn't even remember what was being said the first few times I watched and re-watched my tape! That service elevator door rises - and my mind almost went blank! There is our dear, mesmeric cutie Carson, Hair silky, fluffy and with the slightest wave, dark chocolate brown long sleeved silken dress shirt - perfectly unbuttoned - showing off a complex silver choker, white dress slacks, belt and shoes. Matching color from belt to floor is a most elegant look in my opinion.
All disappointment I may have experienced while viewing the initial wardrobe looks faded in their entirety while enjoying the couture Carson selected for their reveal. I continue to be skeptical about the virtues of outfitting out guys in Jil Sander's designs... but can dismiss them any time we are treated to shots like those at the Tate that night! Thank you, Carson!
Peace darlins! (And this time, on to Thom!) --De

Girl, you have No need to apologize. The fact that you take the time to do this at all is great, even before the falls. I can't imagine anyone getting impatient with you. If you know of anyone I'll be glad to hurt them for you. I doubt I'm the only one.

Rain soaked phone lines = frequent problems with dial up. Let's see if I can make this post stick for once!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I rarely single Thom's complete works out in a recap... so it's high time I again pass along kudos. (Sheesh - I haven't written about Thom's ultimate brilliance since the Kevin D. episode? TTB, why didn't you slap me? )
With the recent reairing of many original shows, I became cognizant of Thom's ever evolving work, from the multiple episodes shot in the original echoing loft - with the gray high arched fireplace, to the warm and beautifully inviting loft procured by Thom at the Tate.
I remember Thom's work with simple housepaint on canvas that became Ross M.'s stunning "waves" painting and have tried over and over to get a good look at the paintings that flank the QE elevator doors. After Winston's episode - I am not only convinced that the paintings (one or both) in the Restaurant were Thom Filicia originals, but that the apple green painting with the huge red "umbrella" and the crimson painting opposite it are also Thom originals.
In Winston's episode - we get a rare shot of the full length of the space from the vantage point of the elevator - however briefly. We also finally see that the windows are not only behind the buffet, but also on the far walls near Ted's bar. The wine cabinet no longer looks pale blue, but a soft brown, and plants, large and small are carefully placed on floors and tables. The room has a cozy, organic feel.
Flanking either side of the flat screen TV wall are bookcases filled with books, photos, river rocks, votive candles and scattered knick nacks. I wonder what the pictures are of...?
The bureau below the apple green painting often hods a raft of tapered candles. In this encarnation, there was a raft of tiny white votives, twinkling away. In a vase, Thom had what appeared to be willow branches.
Behind the seating area was a beautiful buffet that appeared to be black lacquered. It had two table lamps on either end, and three distinctive white "tapered" style candles centered between them. On either side of the buffet, were two black leather ottomons.
I swear Thom has changed dark brown sofas lately. They had a gray sectional in the old loft... but I could have sworn there was a chocolate colored sectional in the Tate for a while as well. Now there is a standard three seater sofa and three armless chairs.
Every week Thom moves the items on the coffee table to suit the show, and to seemingly coordinate with Carson and their wardobe choices.
When painting - balance of form and color is essential. Thom takes this approach to his design of the room.
If there is a brass or bronze knick nack to be found prominently in view, a cross view will reveal a lampshade of Amber hue. The long shot showed a golden far wall, and the back of the sofa had a golden fur throw draped over it.
Kyan wears hot tomato red, Ted sits opposite him wearing the exact chromatic opposite color - sage green - while leaning against a pillow with a hot red design and beside a bowl of red delicious apples. Red wine sits in wide bowled goblets with the green wine bottle on the table - almost art itself.
Carson and Kyan enter wearing white pants, the cross shot reveals white rectangular candles burning on the coffee table. Carson wears a chocolate brown/black shirt, Jai and Thom wear navy and black pants and blue/black river rocks lay in a tray on the table. Jai is in silver blue - Thom is in peach - both chromatic opposites seen in the wide and cross shots.
Even the salmon pink of the orchids on the bar seem akin to Thom's shirt in the opening shot. I love the elegent antique looking legs on the ottomans and side tables that flank the sofa and rest beside Ted. The salmon pink fabric echoing the orchids across the room.
Everything is elegant and purposeful. The intricasy of Thom's design is astounding. As much as Carson pours himself into outfitting these breathtaking men, Thom's resplendent designs shine as astonishing labors of love. His talent and attention to detail is unmatched. He not only delivers phenominal reconstructions of the SG's homes, places of buisness or celebrations - he continues to ever astound and amaze me with his weekly creations at the Tate.
Thom is a super-natural talent that we are greatful to have the priviledge of witnessing week after week.
Kudos Thom. You and your team deserved the individual Emmy. Quite simply - you were robbed.
Peace and prosperity. --De
I agree though, there is nothing wrong with De's eyesight. I don't even see that stuff when they're in the loft. I'm kinda blinded by their beauty. Eh.
