I've been waiting for a campfire elimination. A top chef naturally will cook on a beach, just like they would prepare elegant dishes from vending machines and canned food in under 15 minutes. This seasons challenges are getting rediculous. And the judges get ticked off at these chefs because they dont pull rabbits out of their hats with what little they have to work with. The gimmicks are out of hand, its not like last season at all. They should all make a stand one day and refuse to cook. Or start spitting in the food. Doing it on the beach seems more unsanitary. Wind and seguls, the board of health should have step in. Next I want to see a dish prepared underwater. Thats entertainment-challenging enough right?

Sam really should have gone home, his dish was the worst. Its so weird how they pick and choose, Frank did well in the QF his with the same guest judge, they all seemed to like his side dish but it was disconnected for that he goes. It was still better then Cliff's slop in a bowl and Sams burnt mess. At least Frank tried to fix things and still make it presentable. What a farce this season is turning into.

They really need to do a between seasons special forcing the judges to cook under the same conditions and restraints to see what they can pull off and their honor and reputations as judges should be on the line, the winner gets to judge the next season with better perspective.

JUSTICE!!!!! The loser was the correct choice to be eliminated. He had absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. From bullying Marcel to exposing his massive gut on national television, KARMA is a you-know-what.

What does Franks physical appearance have to do with his cooking abilities? Sure, I think Sam is hot but I dont think that helps him cook any better then say the ferret looking Marcel. Looks have nothing to do with their skill as a chef.

Frank bowed out with class,

brillke

With Class?? He walked out the door with the usual, "I know I'm better than all these chefs!" lol!! He had been really obnoxious of late, leaving off his A & B of Marcel over the toothbrush incident, he took credit for the pizza idea, ran down other chefs needlessly, and can't handle adversity trying to make his quiche even without an oven!! lol!! Good riddance!! Watermelon steak?? What an idiot!! Betty really redeemed herself!! Mia, give us a break with the "salad" deals!! Do you even like to cook?? lol!! When in doubt go with salad!! 8-) - Cliff was lucky finding his dish had sand!! Sam was headed out the door as far as I was concerned with that mealy-mouth whining at the end!! He was real lucky too!! Poor Frank had to go!! Just a little slow thinking on his feet when faced with a real challenge!! I won't miss him!! Michael just keeps hanging in there!! Dude!! 8-)

That was really, really tacky. That would be like someone walking into my hotel and, while pointing at me, says "he has to go because he's fat". What does my girth have to do with my mind or willingness to go the extra mile? I'm a damn fine employee so my weight shouldn't make a wit of differance.

It's people like you that make me sad.

Must admit was happy to see Marcel win this QF. Can't even BEGIN to say how happy I was to see Frank go. Now if we can get rid of Michael, Betty and Sam, (in that order) all will be well with the world. Elia, Cliff, Ilan and Marcel are my picks for TC

I think that is a good list for the next few shows. But couldn't we get rid of Betty 1st? She can only be nice for so long before she has one of her moments.

Right now, it is reality TV focused on the wrong parts of cooking. TC, lets see it!

Sure, Betty can go before Michael. Long as they both get the boot. Sam, as many say, is a back stabber with no character. He doesn't even have the guts to admit he is an a##. Mia is the same way and look forward to her departure too.

I was pleasantly suprised this time that Mia didnt make a sourpuss face when Elia won the EC...

Uh yeah and whats more reflective of a quality chef? a Carpachio or a hunk of watermelon? It's a no brainer. But hey when your the new producer's darling then you get those breaks.

If food is about taste, maybe that hunk of watermelon was really good. Don't knock it, unless you have tried it.

Must have been a hell of a good watermelon is all I can say. I thought Frank's presentation was the best...just can't see flavor.

Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing how good Mia is? (In her own opinion of course.) She's the "queen of breakfast" and a "professional bar-b-q-ologist" wtf ever that is.

I'm glad she has confidence in herself but JEEZ

She also did the dreaded "S" dish (salad) and wound up in the bottom 3 in the QF... when are these guys gonna learn to stay away from the salads???

Granted, Sam and Cliff have been two of the best up until this point. But does that factor into the judging criteria for elimination challenges? If so, it shouldn't. The judges should always approach each chef's endeavors every week, as though they're experiencing that person for the first time, and not carry their personal biases from show to show.

That's just silly. 1. I don't consider a judge bringing into consideration past performance as being "personal bias." 2. If previous performance should count for nothing then someone who consistently finishes in the bottom three but never gets chosen for elimination could end up winning the competition. I would not consider someone who finishes in the bottom three each week, but happens to get lucky and win the final, a "Top Chef."

There have been serious studies done which prove that good looking people have the edge, in any field. They've even tested children, showing pictures of people with different looks. The better looking people were the ones the kids thought were smarter, and who were better, nicer...

I think in cooking, a good appearance is an advantage, since presentations enhance the appetizing appeal. Seeing an unkempt chef is not as appetitizing.

We form opinions of others based on less than a minute of exposure to them. It's not fair, but, it's human nature.

If Im not mistaken, Franks dish did well in the QF, correct? Presentation was far better then Marcels, IMO, since I cant taste the food Im basing the majority of my opinion on that. Also, the word "watermelon steak" is just stupid, IMO.

Had either Cliff or Sam gone home today I would have completely written this show off as a farce and stopped watching

I second this opinion. In fact I agree so much that I finally registered at this site. Cliff and Sam (and Ilan) are the obvious true chefs in the competition. I would like to see the challenges progress to show true culinary skills rather than just "survival" skills. Let these 3 men show the others how to really impress with a Fine Dining challenge.

I actually like Mia. She's shown some weaknesses, but, she's started to shine. You can tell how versatile she is, and it would be nice to see her win. I was actually disappointed for her that she didn't win tonight, since, her dish was a big success. i feel bad for her. She's an interesting woman, who's inspirational in many ways, for me.

If the show follows the template of last season, they start to roll out the real fine chef challenges towards the end. I think It's kind of neat to see these bizarre survivalist challenges, since they require nerves of steel, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and real creativity.

I believe TopChef is like Project Runway in that the judges are allowed to use past performance in their final evaluations, and in that the producers have some say in the eliminations. For that reason, I was fairly confident that Cliff and Sam would be staying. I do think that at least one of them is a given for the finals, as both have great credentials and have had numerous successful dishes thus far, dishes that showed superior culinary skills, not the ability to "sling hash" or make something out of a few oddball items, which is not 'culinary expertise" IMO.

That's just silly. 1. I don't consider a judge bringing into consideration past performance as being "personal bias." 2. No harm/no foul. (O: Hard to "quote" the correct person. Then you want to say more but it is more off something someone else said. Such as:
I have never liked Sam..arrogant (for no reason), dirty looking all the time and always looks like someone pooped in his wheaties. Get over yourself Sam.
Mia is one strange person. She is honestly offended when she doesn't win and someone else does. Another one who needs to get over herself.

I don't have a real big problem with Marcel. I think most people tend to over-react to him and his personality. That being said, I don't think he has backed up his arrogance with performance.

Elia won this task using frozen waffles. Nice adjustment, but it doesn't prove to me that she is worth of "Top Chef". She hasn't been very consistent. In a previous challenge the guest judge stated that she "Took something that I love to eat and made it inedible." I would say that's a pretty shocking indictment (and she had two hours in that QF challenge) of a professional chef. Again, no one has been as consistent as Sam or Cliff.

just out of curiosity ...

since the episodes are taped, why does it take a while for the bloggers -- tom, gail, harold, whomever -- to get their blogs up for that week's episode? is it that they want to wait til the episode has aired in all time zones? i can't figure out why else they wouldn't have the blogs up by now, considering they could have written them weeks ago.

I'm with you on this one. The design of the challenge seemed flawed. The cooks have to know how they're going to prepare their food, right? I know that part of the challenge was seeing who can adapt the best, but gambling luck played a big part of this one.

I will agree to disagree on this one. That watermelon must have been awesome is all I can say. As for presentation, thats a mater of opinion, and since the judges opinion is the only one that matters, Marcel wins.

I really think the term watermelon steak annoys me so much because it reminds me of when people were like ohh you must try this cold 3-melon soup and it was like $20 a bowl. Dude, its a smoothie. Food snobs annoy me,

Forgot about the "gorilla humping" that was toooo funny. Yes, Ted and Ilan do look like twins. Even with all the extra drama and lack of cleanliness, I do enjoy this show still. I just don't think the chefs should start with a clean slate each show, though. I think their previous performances SHOULD make a difference. I just can't get out of my head that disasterous mushroom debacle that Frank created for the childhood memory challenge.

"Yes, I recall my family sitting around the table, enjoying freaky mushroomness from Alice in Wonderland as a child!" COME ON!

I would have been disappointed if Sam or Cliff left. They have both consistantly been winners, whereas Frank, not so much.

Even if Marcel is the next to go, I am glad that he outlasted Frank. Marcel is really quirky, but he doesn't really say hateful things like Frank did.

Do you really think that Frank means that Marcel is welcome at his house? If so, I bet he hides all the toothbrushes!

Frank is right about being better than some of the people there, though, at least in Michael's case. I like Michael, but he is absolutely not Top Chef material.

I'm excited about seeing Ted next week. I have a crush on him! If he and Ilan stand next to each other, do you think we will be able to tell the difference?! I think Ted is much more attractive. He has a great voice. Sigh. So many of the great ones are gay...

I really think the term watermelon steak annoys me so much because it reminds me of when people were like ohh you must try this cold 3-melon soup and it was like $20 a bowl. Dude, its a smoothie. Food snobs annoy me,

brillke

Agreed. I have no problem with coming up with a clever name for your dish, but let's face it, watermelon steak is extremely annoying.

Sorry, but I doubt there are very many chef's who go to work not knowing where they are working or how they'll be cooking.

I'm with you on this one. The design of the challenge seemed flawed. The cooks have to know how they're going to prepare their food, right? I know that part of the challenge was seeing who can adapt the best, but gambling luck played a big part of this one.

And again its interesting to not that a relatively unknown guest judge awards the immunity to the chef least suited for the following elimination challange on the basis of a hunk of watermellon.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

just out of curiosity ...

since the episodes are taped, why does it take a while for the bloggers -- tom, gail, harold, whomever -- to get their blogs up for that week's episode? is it that they want to wait til the episode has aired in all time zones? i can't figure out why else they wouldn't have the blogs up by now, considering they could have written them weeks ago.

I absolutely think that they hold them until the episode has aired in all time zones.

GO MARCEL!!!!!!! YAY!!!!

Yeah, I noticed that too. There is something very strange about Mia.

I think some of her hard luck life talents are kind of endearing. I don't know why. I understand what y'all are saying, but, I can't help but root for someone who has pulled themselves up, and made a success. I have to admire her, inspite of her irritating idiosyncrasies.

Yes, she has had a hard life and I am sorry about that. Just can't like her as she is now. Personality thing I guess.

I feel the same way. She has annoyed me on numerous occasions, but she has such a sweet voice and sounds so sincere!

Annoying is being too nice, it was lame, with no thought or effort involved. He tried to pull his dish off simply with naming it a steak. I'm sorry but people that like food will not be fooled by a name, they will actually see and taste what is good.

And if you have any sense you know a steak can't be made out of watermelon.

Pompous.

I'm just glad to see there are so many people addicted to this show. I started out thinking I was alone... LOL. I'm glad I discovered this board and regstered. So... how many of us keep watching the reruns, no matter how many days they're on? I'll admit I'm a TC junkie.
