Wow! I was so eager to see this episode, esp after having no episode at all last week! It was a good thing, in my opinion to see some of the chefs on the chop block who are not used to being there. I think it may have opened thier eyes, so to speak to the fact that quite easily, one of them could have had to go home.
This show is so unpredictable in that respect, you pretty much can't predict whats going to happen, what was a "No! No!" in a previous episode could be a "Yes! Yes!" now.
I feel for the chefs, they are tired, homesick, dogged out and still have to get out thier and try thier best. I don't know how the real filming went but I can imagine nearly all the shows were done back to back not in the week to week that we see. I would never make it being under a camera's eye like that and no time to myself. Of course I can't cook at all so I would have been gone from the get go lol.
I may not like them all personally but I admire thier drive and ambition. And I know I am no way in any capacity knowledgable enough to even have a cooking opinion about them but I can say what I feel about them as a viewer. So heres my silly opinions:
I feel that Betty saw that she was heading down the wrong road and is trying to turn herself around. I think she does have alot of innate talent but I don't know that it will be enough to pull this off. She's up againest some highly trained chefs and I think the stress of that is wearing her very thin. I think alot of her anger these last episodes are from extreme stress and her fear that she's not good enough.
I liked Mia more at the start but now she kinda grates on my nerves with all the self focused comments she says. I respect the fact that she has humble beginnings but hearing it over and over is a little rough. She has alot of talent but I will be really surprised if she makes it to the finals.
Elia is one of my favorites, has been from the start, I think she's extremely talented but a little on the high horse sometimes. She is very tempermental although I do feel she handles criticism fairly well. I love the fact she stands up for what she thinks but I'm afraid she may become discouraged again and give up. I hope not because I feel she has a good chance at the finals.
Sam I really don't know what to think of him, I don't think he takes criticism well, he's very talented no doubt but seems a little sinister sometimes, like he feels he's above getting called out. I see not much respect from him and although he's an excellant cook I somehow don't see him in the finals.
Ilan is a golden boy, seems rather cocky but very easy going and so far not drama orientated at all. He's a high contender for the finals although I wish he'd vary his style a little.
Cliff is a professional, no doubt, I have liked him very well so far. But he kinda scares me sometimes, I sense a anger simmering there that I hope, for his sake doesn't cause him to crash. He was obviously pissed at being called to the judges table and it showed. He's another high contender for the finals.
Marcel is annoying no doubt but kind of endearing too. He is obviously highly talented and I think his audacity and smugness is an act for the most part. I've seen him be an arrogant son of a gun and then go frolic in the ocean like a kid. You can't help but like him just a little. He's inventive & creative but I think he's barely hanging in there.
Michael I just love, I am in awe of the fact he's made it this far. I don't think he is near as dumb as he's portrayed. Out of all the chefs he has the most heart and I think a true desire to win. He really seems to be trying and he has exhibited some very good concepts. I think he may have more surprises in store for us. He reminds me of my little brother no doubt, he's so scatterbrained sometimes.
OMG I have posted too much haha but I really enjoy this show, it's the first show that I have looked foreward to watching in a loooong time.
And yes, my kitchen does hate me, it told me so, I tried to cook a turkey at Thanksgiving and the oven declared mutiny and shorted out. Sigh..

Okie dokie, nothing I can do about it, Franks gone. I want a pillow with the words Watermelon Steak stitched on it for Christmas,
brillke
I guess taste doesn't matter. How can you eat something if it doesn't taste good? And your only basing your comment on what Ilan said. I guess the guest judge knows nothing about food and yall do, so what the hell did they have him on there for???????
If Im not mistaken, Franks dish did well in the QF, correct? Presentation was far better then Marcels, IMO, since I cant taste the food Im basing the majority of my opinion on that. Also, the word "watermelon steak" is just stupid, IMO.
brillke
Apparently taste won over presentation. Marcel also had a nice presentation as well. It was very clean look. So he must of had both. I'll take taste over presentation anyday. If it looks good and I can't eat, then whats the point.
I will agree to disagree on this one. That watermelon must have been awesome is all I can say. As for presentation, thats a mater of opinion, and since the judges opinion is the only one that matters, Marcel wins.
I really think the term watermelon steak annoys me so much because it reminds me of when people were like ohh you must try this cold 3-melon soup and it was like $20 a bowl. Dude, its a smoothie. Food snobs annoy me,

But I just read Chef Tom's blog and the first thing in my mind was why not a great Frittata...Chef Tom said the same thing about Frank...Frittata's would have been great on that open fire and Frank could of pulled it off if he was not so wrapped up in his Quiche idea!
They didn't boot Harold last year for having sand in his spinach and sunchokes when his dish was excellent otherwise, so why boot Cliff when his dish had very good flavor profiles?
I believe it was grit in his mushrooms...sand maybe but he did not wash his mushrooms well enough..I guess his Dad missed that conversation with him as a male we always know to wash our mushrooms well...

Sorry, but I doubt there are very many chef's who go to work not knowing where they are working or how they'll be cooking.
I'm with you on this one. The design of the challenge seemed flawed. The cooks have to know how they're going to prepare their food, right? I know that part of the challenge was seeing who can adapt the best, but gambling luck played a big part of this one.
All the more reason Frank should have tried to keep it simple!! Not knowing what the conditions will be and you think "quiche?" Not brilliant!! Sam lost it for me with that mealy-mouth explanation, not to mention making that slimy comment about Elia winning with a "frozen waffle!" Loved the preview for next week!! Things are getting rough when you hear Mia telling someone to "kiss my a#%" after being "thrown under the bus!" ROFLOL!!
right about the quiche-he is the second person to go home for trying one(Candace last season).
Please.
I knew who they were going to be cooking for when Padma told them about the challenge. A former surfer/Chef is the guest judge. You have a quick fire with raw foods. You are going to be cooking for people who often skip "the most important meal of the day" and are "California athletes." Oh, and we're not real sure about the cooking facilities.
1+1+1= ?
And Frank's quiche could have worked... he had prepared crusts in foil pans....heat a cast iron skillet , put an inch or so of sand (for insulation), put in the foil crust.. poke holes so it'll not puff. Pour in quiche mixture/ cover the cast iron skillet with foil, and then place a second, heated skillet (cast iron) on top. Remove some of the coals from under the skillet to reduce the heat, and place them inside the second skillet, creating an impromptu "Dutch Oven" ...
You just have to watch the fire/coals to make sure it is heating evenly... maybe cook it a little underdone so you can keep it warm without overcooking it while you make the second quiche.
And I'll be happy to see Betty go. Her voice drives me insane when she isn't yelling. When she starts screaming at people and trying to be in control it's even worse.
I think Cliff might win. For a while I thought Sam, but unless he starts owning up to mistakes and stops making excuses he'll lose. It's starting to bother the judges. Ilan maybe, but I'm betting on Cliff... he has a more outgoing personality and I could see him being more comfortable with public appearances .

I first learned of it whilst watching "Moonstruck" believe it or not.
Cher is making them with Italian bread and red peppers the morning her fiance comes to tell her he can't marry her.........Yeah... Good advice to Sam I Am this week...SNAP OUT OF IT!!!!!.
You take a piece of bread...cut a whole in the middle
or rip it out like I do..Pan fry the bread for a bit in butter on both sides...Crack the egg in the hole then turn....They are so delish!
Something about the grilled bread
just makes them really good!
OK Detective Maui....Keep up the good snooping
)))
I LOL'd about just wanting to watch TV and chill......NO way...You got work to do!!!!
OHMYG.....HOLE not whole..Grrrrr
I need more cawwfee!
I was thinking......
The older chefs who have cooked in one restaurant
for awhile may be at a disadvantage somewhat like Frank and Betty...They have mastered their menus and that style of cooking I'm sure to perfection.
Although Betty seems to know a lot of haute terms I never heard of.....I think Betty's dish seemed the winner from what they described.......Even Mia..The most loved by the surfers......Hmmmm.
But the younger ones may lack experience the thirty somethings like Cliff and Sam arent' too far out of school and haven't only been cooking one style for so long....Ilan seems to be the exception..Is he not the most charming little doll??
I think they had to pick Frank out of desperation...They had to factor past performance in on this one.
It may not have been fair totally but I think they just had to.

I think Ellia's dishes always look so unappetizing. They are always round, flat, and dark and appear over-handled.

In a tree.
On a dare.
Or even without underwear.
Why! I'd even eat them with a Bear!
Yes, I would eat grey eggs that way.

Was wondering where you were!
My daughter's favorite book when she was little. I almost had it memorized because she wanted to hear it every night for 18 months. She made me substitute Pam for Sam. She thought it was funny her mommy was in a book.
Great work!
Aww, thanks Sister--brillke and Mother H too! I actually haven't watched the ep yet (I fell asleep on the couch last night, if you can believe it!), so I'm trying to stay away from commenting on anything content-wise until tonight when I fire up the DVR queue (I don't want to be accused of practicing "opinionation" without a license, lol!

glad you want to refrain from that! There is a lot of that going on...especially on the last epi's thread!

Frank could have made a crustless quiche. That would have been great.
Sounds delicious! Isn't what you're describing a "shaped" omelette?

Not exactly. You just make the quiche filling and put it in the iron skillet. As it cooks it makes its own crust. I have never done one, but have eaten a few. Like it better than one with a crust...especially if the crust is soggy. I would imagine you would need a bit less liquid or more cheese to get it nice and crispy. It is hard to regulate a wood fire, but it can be done with great results.

Well, after watching all the bonus videos, I'm very disgruntled at Bravo's manipulation in this episode.
In the judging, Chef Tom took off after Sam for not "fixing the dish" when his Toad in the Hole went wrong. He took off after each of them. But Sam stayed mum about how his Toad in the Hole was actually his disasterous attempt to "fix the dish" that was his original disaster, the Green Eggs and Ham. Sam stayed VERY quiet and didn't confess to the judge that it WAS his attempted fix, and that he had actually screwed it up a second time. This made Sam look dishonest compared to Cliff, who stepped right up and admitted that he had screwed up his effort. Yet, in the bonus footage, Chef Tom turns out to be aware that Sam first did Green Eggs and Ham. So something is screwy here.
I take back all that I said about Sam being dishonest here. He was being prudently silent when Chef Tom chose to criticize Sam's disasterous remake second dish without mentioning the screw-up on the first dish. Either they cut out the part where Chef Tom also addressed the original Green Eggs and Ham, or Chef Tom was going soft on Sam because he had an agenda to dump Frank. Possibly both.
As to Frank's comments about being a "professional," an earlier commenter noted that the statement was a disembodied voice as he left the building, and that the statement could have been made a lot earlier and then manipulatively edited in here. Perhaps. But the three bonus videos of Frank doing his "exit interview" show him discussing this theme in depth, trying to leave us with a specific mental image of him. Perhaps he saw his bullying of Marcel as justified anger. In any event, not sure that Bravo faked the timing of Frank's parting comment as suggested by one commenter.

I'm just glad to see there are so many people addicted to this show. I started out thinking I was alone... LOL. I'm glad I discovered this board and regstered. So... how many of us keep watching the reruns, no matter how many days they're on? I'll admit I'm a TC junkie.
I thought I was the only one watching the reruns and marathons over and over again....TC is a really good show...
I know I'll like it even better when Betty goes....when she had that screaming fit with Marcel...well, that was the last straw for me....she really showed her true colors....I really like Marcel and I'm so glad he finally one a challenge....

Mushroom soup? Ahi tuna and shrimp tacos? She's made plento of colorful, appealing-looking dishes.

I haven't gotten to read the extras yet, but Chef Tom did mention that Sam's dish didn't look like "green eggs & ham". I had a feeling he probably knew what Sam was trying to do and was baiting him at judge's table. But what would Chef Tom say if Sam had admitted it was his 2nd attempt? Sam would be gone. I don't think he was being dishonest or lied about it. He just knew he would be in serious sh*t if he said is was the second try.
