I can't believe that I got hooked on this show after I got hooked on Project Runway. You start out rooting for one person, but then another becomes your fav.

I hope Marcel gets into the final group now. I used to like Betty, but I'm another one that can't wait until she goes. Michael can go after that. I was very happy to see Frank go last night, especially with his behavior lately.

I was wondering if the Thanksgiving ep and the behavior he displayed then had anything to do with it. It's not just about the cooking. If you're going to be the Top Chef at a restaurant or win this prize, you'd also be representing Bravo. Frank was a jerk toward Marcel and how good would he be dealing with others? Would he scream at some young underling who he might work with? I thought the Thanksgiving show was very telling with one half having to serve the other half. Betty and her bossiness sure came out strong. The behaviors of both groups were interesting to watch.

Marcel is handling himself well and he and several others seem to be able to take on any challenge.

Well, after watching all the bonus videos, I'm very disgruntled at Bravo's manipulation in this episode.

In the judging, Chef Tom took off after Sam for not "fixing the dish" when his Toad in the Hole went wrong. He took off after each of them. But Sam stayed mum about how his Toad in the Hole was actually his disasterous attempt to "fix the dish" that was his original disaster, the Green Eggs and Ham. Sam stayed VERY quiet and didn't confess to the judge that it WAS his attempted fix, and that he had actually screwed it up a second time. This made Sam look dishonest compared to Cliff, who stepped right up and admitted that he had screwed up his effort. Yet, in the bonus footage, Chef Tom turns out to be aware that Sam first did Green Eggs and Ham. So something is screwy here.

I take back all that I said about Sam being dishonest here. He was being prudently silent when Chef Tom chose to criticize Sam's disasterous remake second dish without mentioning the screw-up on the first dish. Either they cut out the part where Chef Tom also addressed the original Green Eggs and Ham, or Chef Tom was going soft on Sam because he had an agenda to dump Frank. Possibly both.

As to Frank's comments about being a "professional," an earlier commenter noted that the statement was a disembodied voice as he left the building, and that the statement could have been made a lot earlier and then manipulatively edited in here. Perhaps. But the three bonus videos of Frank doing his "exit interview" show him discussing this theme in depth, trying to leave us with a specific mental image of him. Perhaps he saw his bullying of Marcel as justified anger. In any event, not sure that Bravo faked the timing of Frank's parting comment as suggested by one commenter.

I haven't gotten to read the extras yet, but Chef Tom did mention that Sam's dish didn't look like "green eggs & ham". I had a feeling he probably knew what Sam was trying to do and was baiting him at judge's table. But what would Chef Tom say if Sam had admitted it was his 2nd attempt? Sam would be gone. I don't think he was being dishonest or lied about it. He just knew he would be in serious sh*t if he said is was the second try.

It's actually in the bonus videos - they show Chef Tom going around to each chef fairly early in the competition at the beach and asking them what they were doing. At that point, Sam was starting his Green Eggs and Ham.

So, you're right, Chef Tom was baiting Sam. The hot seat must have been pretty uncomfortable for Sam right about then. If he had admitted to screwing up twice, it would have been clear to the guest judge as well that he had done no better than Frank and had messed up twice, not just once.

He may be handling himself better, but his menu/food choices are still a bit weird. Just because he won 1 QF doesn't make him Top Chef material. Bacon Avacado ice cream? Cliff used avacado, but "made it work". Watermelon steak? Puleese!

I just get very impatient with young people who are so arogant that they don't listen. They don't have to bow down and roll over just because someone is older. And confidence in ones abilitiy is a very good thing. Harold had that in spades. But arogance(sp) means you don't listen and take advantage of others opinions. And you can fly in the face of everything others believe, but you had better have the balls (and ability) to back it up and get people on your side.

Elia was going on about Chef Tom's opinion of Cliffs dish in the Thanksgiving epi. But she asked him straight out what was it about his dish as opposed to hers. He gave her an honest answer and she respected that. Didn't agree but respected him.

I just don't see that in Marcel.

Interesting that the show turns to Elia constantly for clips to show the impact on the chefs and to move the action forward. She's quite pretty and very, very well-spoken, but what about the rest? Are they all inarticulate? It's as if Elia is the official narrator this season. Can't say that I object, though. Her comments are really interesting and her demeanor when she does them is very appealing. She's a very refreshing voice on this show and really does help tie it together. I enjoy watching events unfold through her eyes.

I had Elia pegged to get voted off early, but now she is really stepping it up and winning challenges. I'm gald Frank is gone, he was a hothead bully. And I think Sam and Cliff being in the bottom three brought their ego's down a notch. Nice to see the 3 women in the top 3 this week.
CityGirl
And speaking of inarticulate, one of the times Michael was used to comment on another's dish, he was astonishingly good. Not only did he call Betty's and Mia's Duck Napoleon a "contraption," but he was actually right about the correct technique for cooking duck!

Most of the time, though, his clips seem to be in there just to show his personality, not to move the action forward.

That's understandable! We've been blasted with endless immature dramatics each episode. Thank God this was a calm episode. I personally find myself not bemoaning the losers and only watching to make sure my faves are still in it. The ones who get axed have already been portrayed in such a negative light that it is hard to get all upset about them getting the boot.

Bravo has definitely been more interested in inflaming the hatred so far this season than in fanning the love. It's quite stunning that we haven't had pages and pages of outraged "he/she wuz ROBBED" commentary at all yet this season.

I feel for the chefs, they are tired, homesick, dogged out and still have to get out there and try their best.
----------------------------------------------------------------

It would be a show in itself if Bravo actually let us know what it was like to be cooped up with strangers for a month with little communication to the outside world. I could not do it at all...much less sew (Project Runway) or cook!

And then he actually said something to the effect of having behaved as a "true" gentleman throughout his Top Chef time....

-----------------------------------------------------------------

“A true chef is a gentleman.”

This is what I heard.
topchefan
And Frank's quiche could have worked... he had prepared crusts in foil pans....heat a cast iron skillet , put an inch or so of sand (for insulation), put in the foil crust.. poke holes so it'll not puff. Pour in quiche mixture/ cover the cast iron skillet with foil, and then place a second, heated skillet (cast iron) on top. Remove some of the coals from under the skillet to reduce the heat, and place them inside the second skillet, creating an impromptu "Dutch Oven" ...

---------------------------------------------------------

WOW! You have impressed me! How creative! An oven on the beach. Wonderful!

OT Just jumping in...

Below is a quote from Tom in his blog of this week...

"I get a kick out of the notion that our producers manipulate the action on Top Chef in order to create drama. The truth is they don’t need to."

Tom,

Now be reasonable, many of us are speaking of remarks or actions of the cheftestants that are "taken out of context" and put in the teasers to stimulate interest or controversy. A good example was, Frank threatening Marcel. We just saw the threat in the teaser, we did not see the reason for this "Frank Blowup." That is what many are objecting to and have decided is audience manipulation. When only a small snipit is offered that is "creating drama."

Oh yeah, they edit things on just about every "reality" show to highten the drama. So the audience never really gets to see the whole story...just an entertaining version of strategically placed edits.

Elia is turning into a surprise. She seems to be doing better and better. And though I'd be apprehensive about trying that breakfast dish, so was Gail and she loved it. Bravo posted the recipe and they including drizzling the waffle in syrup. I don't remember Elia doing that. I thought she'd be eliminated from the competition before now, but now I'd definitely like to see what else she comes up with. Lots of burnt eggs in this episode, which is surprising coming from chefs who seem to have so much talent. Obviously with the fire pit they can't control the heat and Frank, Sam and Cliff couldn't seem to adapt, while both Elia and Betty did. Betty did redeem herself this episode helping Mikey out and she was acting pretty cool. Frank couldn't do his quiche, I kept expecting him to do omelettes instead of a scramble. Watching this episode and next week's preview looks like Cliff might have a temper that comes out when he starts feeling the pressure. I hope I'm wrong, but I do want to see who Mia is addressing when she says, "kiss my a$$."

I agree that I do not like Marcel. I think his very full of himself. BUT I think that Frank was wrong to blast him in the last episode. If I was Marcel, I would have done the same thing. Right now I would have to say that Cliff and Ilan have been my favorite. Betty is annoying and Mia does have experience in every situation. I have never in my life heard of a BBQologist and I live in the South. Michael does not belong in the competition. He may be an excellent cook but he is not TC. I got hooked on the show this year. I happened by it on a Saturday during the marathons. Now me and my girls are hooked. I can't wait until next week.

I was hoping Betty would choke on last night's episode but it didn't happen. Like everyone else I love Michael---as pathetic as he is. lol
I can't wait for next week to see Stephen return. Priceless.

Aw MAN! I was prepared to dislike Betty the whole rest of the season. How DARE she do something nice like offer Michael some eggs! That's so SWEET!

Oh yeah the Betty haters are going to be blaming it on editing of course LOL.

No...that's the domaine of the BettyLovers: to blame her harpy screeching and cheating on "editing," but deny that it can go the other way, too.
