I don't think Marcel is TC material yet, and I also don't think the rest of the ones left are TC material, either. Marcel says things that irritate some other people, and he--like the other chefs--have had some problems with their dishes in the contest. Marcel has his strong and weak points, as do all the others.
These issues can be debated. Hating someone cannot.

I don't think Sam is pathetic or as bad as he is portrayed in the show. There is something admirable about how he has busted his ass working in kitchens since he was 13...and something redeeming about the way he didn't completely buy into Ilan's mean-spiritedness during the 7 dinner. I would be very surprised if he was asking for that 10K knowing he has already won 100K. Just doesn't make sense. It only make sense if he lost and wants time to decompress from a spirit-sapping 38 days in the hell of reality tv.

Well, I agree with you Swiss.
Since none of us really know what happened during those 38 days, except the chefs, and they each have a unique viewpoint, it's impossible to discuss it with any certitude or clarity. What I do like though is the way most have intuitively reacted against the bullying as being unfair (regardless of the cause) as well as intuitively sensing that not all is as it appears with Marcel.
And so we mostly reveal our own vices and virtues as we assume to know theirs.
Funny how almost none of the discussion is about the food. And the food itself has been rather lackluster...there were so many good recipes from last season and so very few from this.
I will highly recommend Elia's mushroom soup! I've served it to several different groups of friends and there is never any left. (Always best to make two batches for any group over 4).
Nevertheless, I enjoy the debate about the underlying ethics etc, and the many reasons why people take one side or the other.
I look forward to seeing how it plays out in the remaining shows.
Certainly it is increasing their ratings and publicity!
The only things we have to go on are what is broadcast and what appears in the TC blogs. We could speculate all day about what goes on behind the scenes (for instance, we could speculate that Marcel is treated much worse than we've seen, but it is being edited out). But can an argument be built on what MIGHT have really happened? I don't think so.
I think ethics enter into the discussion because ethics are part of every part of our life, including while cooking and in the kitchen. Ever been to a party where the hostess knows someone is allergic to peanuts but uses "just a little bit" of peanut-butter in a recipe, anyway, banking on the hope that it will be diluted enough not to cause a reaction...not fun. I think that's why I reacted so strongly to the recipe changing going on in the Camp Glucose challenge.
And ethics definitely play a role in any restaurant business, whether it has to do with honesty in bookkeeping or cutting the corners in sanitation.

Here is a interesting story. I work in Las Vegas which can be a very small town. It seems that Marcel was a big a goofball
at the CIA and used to get into a few arguments with the people he went to school with. It seems that last week he was at a local saloon with some of the people he hangs with and got into a little tiff with someone. He is at the bar and some local lady came up to him and said "hey you are that guy on Top Chef he replied "yes I am." Her response was to bean him with a beer bottle. Resulting in some stiches to the poor guys head. I get this from someone who was there and observed the whole incident. Trying to track down the bar so perhaps if it was on tape as most of the local bars have some pretty good security we could all see the tape. Like to see that video wouldn't you. I am sure Betty would.
Screwy.

I like Jeff Garcia, and it was great to see him finally get a play-off win, but the Seahawks D will be healthy and a healthy Alexander will alway beat Westbrook.
Besides I think the Eagles will get behind early and Westbrook won't get enough touches to make a differance.
It could go either way. I'm just pleased as punch that the Cowboys are gone. There are far too many Cowboys here in the Nation's Capital and you have no idea how much I would have heard if they had advanced to the next round.

Well, I've never knelt at the altar of "Saint Tim" so I guess I'm just not with it.
I also think that, while Jeff has a background in rock, his clothes can be worn anywhere. I can't imagine anyone outside of a rap video wearing a Michael Knight design.
Just my opinion.
I don't know...Jennifer Lopez wore a very memorable gown that looked alot like some of Michael's clothes...just saying...
I think Michael Knight changed his style somewhat while he was on the show. I assumed it was from the influence of the other contestants, judges, Gunn, etc.
But as soon as he was on his own again, he went back to the Frederick's of Hollywood look.
I agree with whomever it was that said he has a limited target market (for the clothing he did before the show and for his Bryant Park collection). I also don't think his was "forward-thinking" or "innovative." It was stuff we'd seen before from other designers, just done in a more trashy style.
I think most people were very disappointed to see that, for the Bryant Park collection, he'd gone back to his old "pimp-daddy" style.
He's definitely someone who might do well with a prolonged mentoring period by someone who could guide him in a less pimp-daddy direction, but he'd have to want to change his style, and it doesn't seem that he wants to.
That's cool, too. Laura Bennett didn't want to change her style of using old vogue patterns and putting doo-dads on them. They both do their own styles really well, and should be able to find markets for them. But they aren't going to be the innovative designers that the rest of the fashion industry will look to for cues as to upcoming trends.

You AREN'T getting a true TOP CHEF when you eliminate someone who made a bad dish but cumulatively performed exceptionally throughout the show.
Exactly. But you ARE getting true entertainment. That is the point. Bravo is not looking for a top chef. Bravo is a business and therefore needs to make money. Period. Top Chef is not a cooking competition. It is a TV show ABOUT a cooking competition. And that makes all the difference.
That may be the reality of it from the producers' point of view, but with Tom C as a judge, and with the quality of some of the guest judges they've had, I don't think they want the show to be a bad reflection on them or their professional status. For instance, yes it's a reality show, but I think part of the reason that Tom C and Gail got after Ilan for his comment to the diners about Marcel's dish was because it was embarrassing to them.
So, it may be a reality show, but if a chef who is a bad reflection on the show is the remaining dog in the pit and is named TC almost by default, then it's not a good reflection on the judges, the show, or Bravo.
I think the reality-show/Top Chef concept works as long as the chefs are at least as professional as the ones in season #1. Otherwise it turns into--well, who will be the last dog in the pit at the end of the night.

Yah know....this isn't the PR board but I have to say I got an opportunity to watch The Devil Wears Prada, and I've read the book...anyway there's a good monologue in it where the magazine's editor talks about the blue sweater the main character is wearing....I won't launch into it but it really goes to show there are 2 types of fashion in this world and one affects the other. While Jen's dress may not have been the exact one that you would wear to a wedding or even a prom, it did affect a whole style in everyday wear for us average folks of flowy sundresses with lower necklines...I was working in a Bridal salon around then and I can't tell you the number of teenage girls who came in and wanted a dress that looked like that to wear to prom...and isn't that the point...Fashion can be as much for the younger girls who can't afford the real things as it can be for the grown women who have the money to spend...different styles different budgets...same origins.

I choose to feel Marcel has been in my opinion talked enough about, debated about and argued about. For me I am not going any further with this subject.
Now when anyone says they HATE anyone of the program I start to laugh. How can they HATE anyone on the show, they do not know them, all the know is what they are shown on the program, with is all edited material. You can say you disapprove of someone's actions but to say you hate them is rather stupid in my humble opinion.
The reason I said this should be a taboo subject because many of those that support Marcel are almost fanatical in their support while many of those that dissaprove of him are equally fanatical. Those two will never debate the subject, they will argue the subject and leave the arguement with exactly the same ideas as they brought to the table.
That is why I believe this is really a taboo subject.

Not sure how this works because I have yet to see the Season #1 reunion show and assume, if they are like PR, that is when they get the "fan favorite" check?
I think PR films its reunion show after some of the episodes for the season have already been aired. From what I've heard about the TC reunion show, that was also filmed after some of the episodes had been aired (i.e., Stephen was so chagrined over how he appeared on TV).
So, if they pay like Survivor did, when the show is over or the contestant is booted off, Sam would have already received his check by now, no?
I think the logic behind the "spoiler" issue is that, if he won he wouldn't be so needy of money, assuming that he would have already received the money he won. The "favorite fan" check would come at the time they filmed the reunion, after the filming of the episodes had been finished, they had already received their show checks.

I don't agree. I think there is a big difference between a poster asking other posters to vote for a certain chef, and one of the chef's begging (sorry, when he brought in the "out of work" deal, it turned to begging for me) for posters to vote for him.
I think one of the biggest problems is his saying he wants to win because of the financial reward. That is a spoiler, and coming from a chef it is really loathesome.
But Amazon Sam did not come on this board and beg for votes..Lia simple replayed the conversasion... Now Josie and Ilan have begged Your word on the blogs...but what the heck if I was on the show I'd say vote for me too..what dose it hurt?
I got the impression that Sam wrote the email with the idea that it might/would be posted. My bad if I was wrong.
Also, I don't have a clue what is posted on other TC boards. I can barely keep up with this one.

I haven't read anybody posting a begging plea to vote in his favor. I mean, come on--he has something financially to gain from this. It doesn't seem right, especially since the other chefs aren't doing it. But then, it IS Sam's behind-the-back style.
I also haven't read anybody posting what is obviously a spoiler from one of the contestants. That in and of itself is just plain wrong, especially without the "spoiler alert" warning.

Well, I personally dont see it as a spoiler. Ethically, Lia did nothing wrong.
Is Sam or any of the other chefs wrong for asking for our votes? Hm, interesting indeed. I dont mind it. ...Lia don't bother no spoiler...Just because Sam said he had been out of work for two months means nothing...My friend Angie was on Survivior two seasons ago and was not paid till after the show started untill she was eliminated she got $100,000. for staying on the show as long as she did the ones who outlasted her got even more....even if Sam did not make the finals he will get a nice check from Bravo all are paid on a slideing scale even if the win or don't win...you think they do this for free? They probally don't get paid scale for each epi but they get paid for their time on the show believe me!
Not sure but in Agies case she did not recieve any money from Survivor untill after the last showed aired so all in all it took about six months to get her money...atleast she had enough to put down on a house now.

And as much as I hate to admit it, Jeffrey is the only one on season 3 that fit that mold. I just didn't like him or his style.

It was like Frank going off on Marcel's dish in the Thanksgiving epi and Anthony Bourdain asking, "What kind of crack house are you running here?"
Very unprofessional both times. They let personal feelings for the chef color their comments. Bash the food all you want. That is expected.

Wait isn't this board about cooking...If any of us can love cooking and then fit into a gown like that...I'll be impressed!lol!
and what you said above is exactly what I told my husband when he asked why watch all of that "dress crap". It does filter down with a nip here and a tuck there. Raise the hem or neckline a bit or lower it for that matter. It all ends up for the masses eventually. And when the designers forget that and get too kinky, their lines aren't successful at all.

In addition...
I am sure that the producers had thought this out and decided they could not pay the winners immediately after filming or it would leak who won. Also they probably had thought it was within the scope of possibility that someone who worked in a bank would check to see if the chefs had accounts there and had there been any $100,000 deposits.
So to solve this whole mystery, I PROPOSE that a numbered Swiss Bank account is set up for the winner and he or she can only draw on it after the show has finished airing all the episodes. This is how I see it handled on PR and TC. That foils all other suggestions and speculations. No spoiler alerts needed no more discussion needed either. In my humble opinion a superior solution to a silly problem.

Finally got caught up to her post, and understand about the apology.
IMO, what Sam emailed still is a spoiler for the reasons I've alread outlined. It's kind of a biggy, too, since Sam has been so strong in the show and, up until the last episode, certainly one of the fans' favorites.
I had the impression that Sam felt his email would be posted. I know that before I'd post someone's email I'd ask them for permission first.
Even if he didn't know his email would be posted, he must have known that the contents would be shared, including the financial part of it.
As I said previously, I don't have a clue what goes on in the other TC message boards. If other chefs have posted asking for votes on other boards, it seems strange that they wouldn't have done it here, on the TC board...unless they were not doing it for a reason (maybe afraid of getting in trouble for it?).
Anyway, if it is common practice for chefs to post urging viewers to vote for them, then Sam's wouldn't be out of line (except for teh financial part, for reasons I've already outlined).
But why wouldn't he simply post here himself?
Interesting ethical conditions involving the show.
I watched "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" again for the first time in at least 15 years. If you haven't watched in awhile, it might surprise you (like it did me) how many parallels there are between reality shows and the dance marathon featured in the movie.
