How is Ilan's personality "toxic" as compared with Marcel? If this was truely the case why didn't the other chef's pick on him instead of Marcel.
Because he finds people's weaknesses and uses it to hurt them...for no other reason than it gives him pleasure. The reason the others have not felt it is that it is all focussed on Marcel and that kind of person forges co-dependent relationships to protect himself while he attacks those whom he feels are weaker...or competition for attention. I've seen it happen in many a situation. Again, just my impression based on the evidence, as is your imprerssion of Marcel.
I could mention that he was the one that encouraged everyone not to help Marcel serve during the 7 sins dinner, that he was the one who tried to undercut Marcel by lying to the guests about the libidinous character of cherries, that he was the one who tried to get Elia to lie against Marcel (is he doing it again with the "cheating" accusation??), that he was the one who wanteed to slap Marcel after JUST meeting him, that he was the one who focusseed more attention on embarassing Marcel by creating a foam than focussing on the competition.
Toxic. All toxic. All destructive, uncreative and coming from fear and insecurity.
A nasty bit of work.
In my humble opinion.

You know you have to think about it in terms of a TV show and not a cooking competition. Why was Marcel cast. Drama. Why has he seemingly skated through the competition with little scrutiny, considering his skills seems to be just as limited to his scope of cooking as others.
Marcel is a Gold mine for Producers. Emily was very similar. Ken from last season. Steven as well. This whole season has been edited to portray Marcel as a victim leading up to today's episode. And I'm sure that he will roll to victory with a sympathy vote over a dumb joke.
Can you, in all honesty, really refer to what happened as a "dumb joke?" In what twisted world do you live in where having one guy wake up a different guy (that he outweighs by about 100 pounds) past two o'clock in the morning, and physically hold him down on the floor with his hand on the back of his neck while others laugh and egg on the situation, a joke? That isn't a joke no matter how many times you, or Cliff, or Ilan want to say it is just to try and lessen the impact and somehow excuse the behavior.
Uh it started out as a joke and it was obviously a dumb thing to do. Its pretty simple actually.
Uh, no, it didn't start out as a joke. It was never a joke. There is nothing funny about shaving off someone's hair without their consent even if you don't have to wrestle them down on the floor to do it. This was just an extension of their ongoing cruel mob brutality and giving it a label of something that it clearly never was doesn't make it so. Holster is right...you just love the stretch.
I still don't see how my description is stretching. It quite clearly started out as a prank and it was stupid (dumb) becuase they clearly did not think about upseting or possibly hurting Marcel.
I'll give Marcel credit for handling it the way he did and accepting Cliff's apology and credit for Cliff admitting what he did was wrong and not making excuses.

I agree. Cliff really pushed it too far, but he was instigated. If the twitamahoe with the "impish & immature" attitude DOESN'T win, i can see it already. He'll bring charges against Cliff, saying that the "incident" caused him "stresses beyond normal" and caused him to "mess up his foamy muck" and lose the contest to Sam [YIPPIE!], which means Cliff's going to be forking over cash to Michelle/Mitchel/Marcel/whatever for damages to his "precious career".

I think you could be on to something with the Asperger's thought. Aspies are hard to understand unless you know one really well and sorta "get" them. I have a few Aspie friends, and my son has been dx'ed with slight autism. I KNOW my son just irritates his classmates to NO END without meaning to at all. And my son isn't arrogant, he's just really unaware of how other people feel. He is completely unable to put himself in someone else's shoes. It just totally escapes him.
Marcel just comes off as very genuine to me. I don't think anything is an act with him. He is who he is. Yes, he can be very annoying. But he can also brush things off fairly easily. I am sure this isn't his first experience with his peers not liking him. I think he has adjusted well. But then again, that's sort of an Aspie trait too: not caring about what other people think of them. Not because they are egotistical, but just because it doesn't occur to them to care.
Anyway, Holster, good observation IMO.
I wasn't familiar with Asperger syndrome, so I decided to look it up online and share with the class. Here is the definition that I found on Wikipedia:
(Warning: it's pretty lengthy!!)
Asperger syndrome — also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, or autism lite — is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) that is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills. It is considered to be part of the autistic spectrum and is differentiated from other PDDs and from high functioning autism (HFA) in that early development is normal and there is no language delay. It is possible for people with AS to have learning disabilities concurrently with Asperger syndrome. In these cases, differential diagnosis is essential to identify subsequent support requirements. Conversely, IQ tests may show normal or superior intelligence,[1][2] and standard language development compared with the delays typical of classic autism. The diagnosis of AS is complicated by the lack of adoption of a standardized diagnostic screen, and, instead, the use of several different screening instruments and sets of diagnostic criteria. The exact cause of AS is unknown and the prevalence is not firmly established, due partly to the use of differing sets of diagnostic criteria.
Asperger syndrome was named in honor of Hans Asperger (1906-1980), an Austrian psychiatrist and pediatrician, by researcher Lorna Wing, who first used the eponym in a 1981 paper.[3] In 1994, AS was recognized in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as Asperger's Disorder.[4]
AS is often not identified in early childhood, and many individuals do not receive diagnosis until after puberty or when they are adults. Assistance for core symptoms of AS consists of therapies that apply behavior management strategies and address poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness. Many individuals with AS can adopt strategies for coping and do lead fulfilling lives - being gainfully employed, getting married or having successful relationships, and having families. In most cases, they are aware of their differences and recognize when they need support to maintain an independent life.[5]
Social differences
Although there is no single feature that all people with AS share, difficulties with social behavior are nearly universal and are one of the most important defining criteria. People with AS lack the natural ability to see the subtexts of social interaction, and may lack the ability to communicate their own emotional state, resulting in well-meaning remarks that may offend, or finding it hard to know what is "acceptable". The unwritten rules of social behavior that mystify so many with AS have been termed the "hidden curriculum".[13] People with AS must learn these social skills intellectually through seemingly contrived, dry, math-like logic rather than intuitively through normal emotional interaction.[14]
Non-autistics are able to gather information about other people's cognitive and emotional states based on clues gleaned from the environment and other people's facial expression and body language, but, in this respect, people with AS are impaired; this is sometimes called mind-blindness.[15][16] Mind-blindness is also known as a lack of theory of mind.[17] Without Theory of Mind, AS individuals lack the ability to recognize and understand the thoughts and feelings of others. Deprived of this insightful information, they are unable to interpret or understand the desires or intentions of others and thereby are unable to predict what to expect of others or what others may expect of them. This often leads to social awkwardness and inappropriate behavior. In Asperger's Syndrome, Intervening in Schools, Clinics, and Communities, Tony Attwood categorizes the many ways that lack of "theory of mind" can negatively impact the social interactions of people with Aspergers[18]:
Difficulty reading the social and emotional messages in the eyes - People with AS don't look at eyes often, and when they do, they can't read them.
Making literal interpretation - AS individuals have trouble interpretting colloquialisms, sarcasm, and metaphors.
Being considered disrespectful and rude - Prone to egocentric behavior, individuals with Aspergers miss cues and warning signs that this behavior is inappropriate.
Honesty and deception - Children with Aspergers are often considered "too honest" and have difficulty being deceptive, even at the expense of hurting someone's feelings.
Becoming aware of making social errors - As children with Aspergers mature, and become aware of their mindblindness, their fear of making a social mistake, and their self-criticism when they do so, can lead to social phobia.
A sense of paranoia - Because of their mindblindness, persons with Aspergers have trouble distinguishing the difference between the deliberate or accidental actions of others, which can in turn lead to a feeling of paranoia.
Managing conflict - Being unable to understand other points of view can lead to inflexibility and an inability to negotiate conflict resolution. Once the conflict is resolved, remorse may not be evident.
Awareness of hurting the feelings of others - A lack of empathy often leads to unintentionally offensive or insensitive behaviors.
Repairing someone's feelings - Lacking intuition about the feelings of others, people with AS have little understanding of how to console someone or how to make them feel better.
Recognizing signs of boredom - Inability to understand other people's interests can lead AS persons to be inattentive to others. Conversely, people with AS often fail to notice when others are uninterested.
Introspection and self-consciousness - Individuals with AS have difficulty understanding their own feelings or their impact on the feelings of other people.
Clothing and personal hygiene - People with AS are unaffected by peer pressure. As a result, they often do what is comfortable and are unconcerned about their impact on others.
Reciprocal love and grief - Since people with AS react more practically than emotionally, their expressions of affection and grief are often short and weak.
Understanding of embarrassment and faux pas - Although persons with AS have an intellectual understanding of embarrassment and faux pas, they are unable to grasp concepts on an emotional level.
Coping with criticism - People with AS are compelled to correct mistakes, even when they are made by someone in a position of authority, such as a teacher. For this reason, they can be unwittingly offensive.
Speed and quality of social processing - Because they respond through reasoning and not intuition, AS individuals tend to process social information more slowly than the norm, leading to uncomfortable pauses or delays in response.
Exhaustion - As people with AS begin to understand theory of mind, they must make a deliberate effort to process social information. This often leads to mental exhaustion.
A person with AS may have trouble understanding the emotions of other people: the messages that are conveyed by facial expression, eye contact and body language are often missed. They also might have trouble showing empathy with other people. Thus, people with AS might be seen as egotistical, selfish or uncaring. In most cases, these are unfair labels because affected people are neurologically unable to understand other people's emotional states. They are usually shocked, upset and remorseful when told that their actions are hurtful or inappropriate. It is clear that people with AS do not lack emotions. The concrete nature of emotional attachments they might have (i.e., to objects rather than to people), however, often seems curious or can even be a cause of concern to people who do not share their perspective.[19]
However, the problem may be exacerbated by the responses of those neurotypical people who interact with AS-affected persons. An Asperger patient's apparent emotional detachment may confuse and upset a neurotypical person, who may in turn react illogically and emotionally — reactions that many Asperger patients find especially irritating. This can often become a vicious cycle and can sometimes cause families with Asperger-affected members to become especially dysfunctional.
Failing to show affection — or failing to do so in conventional ways — does not necessarily mean that people with AS do not feel affection. Understanding this can lead partners or care-givers to feel less rejected and to be more understanding. Increased understanding can also come from learning about AS and any comorbid disorders.[20] Sometimes, the opposite problem occurs; the person with AS is unusually affectionate to significant others and misses or misinterprets signals from the other partner, causing the partner stress.[21]
Another important aspect of the social differences often found in people with Asperger's is a lack of central coherence.[22] People who have poor central coherence may be so focused on details that they miss "the big picture". A person with a central coherence deficit might remember a story or an incident in great detail but be unable to make a statement about what the details mean. Another might understand a set of rules in detail but be unclear how or where they apply. Frith and Happe explore the possibility that attention to details may be a bias rather than a deficit. There certainly appear to be many advantages to being detail oriented particularly in activities and professions that require a high level of meticulousness. One also can see that this would cause problems if most non-autistic (but certainly not all)people are able to move fluidly between detail and big picture orientations.

Chef C explained that according to the rules he had no choice but to tell Cliff to pack and go home. This was serious enough to warrant his being sent home. Marcel could have had his say, but it wouldn't influence the outcome. Cliff however did redeem himself somewhat by apologizing and admitting the mistake.

Bravo Padma!!
"It wasn’t in fun; they weren’t all chummy with Marcel. I bet he was very scared being woken up like that from a sound sleep and dragged onto the carpet. In a previous blog, I said that Marcel was their Piggy in some "Lord of the Flies" scenario, and unfortunately it turns out that I was right. How dare Cliff lay his hands on Marcel? And nevermind human decency -- how stupid can you be? Leaving aside the fact that you’re on national television, or that potential investors, employers, and millions of the general viewing public are watching, why would you jeopardize your chance at $100, 000 dollars after you’ve spent weeks and weeks slaving your heart out with little sleep, away from all your family and friends?
Elia, Ilan, and Sam were not innocent in it either. None of them said to stop. In fact, Ilan eggs Cliff on so boisterously off camera and Sam sits there laughing on the couch. I guess Elia was holding the camera? I felt awful when I heard and even worse when I saw the footage. I always thought that our show was better than many reality shows because it was about people trying to be the best at their craft, and that that dedication was compelling to watch, I saw no one trying to be better that night. What a shame."

As have I. But Tom makes clear it was cooked enough to eat. Otherwise, they would not have let them serve it to anyone.
Still stretching.
How is "Most Likey" making it clear. How is that a stretch. With all the spin in your posts you should just title them the Marcel Factor.
lol
With all the "made-up" nonsense in your posts, you should just title them Max Factor.
And again, I'm not the one trying to psycho analyise the contestants. So much for "made up" nonsense.
keep going.....
Am I "making this up" too or did you not spend multipule paragraphs trying to analyise someone you have only seen on TV?
Please feel free to respond...

As a Executive Chef with 15 years experience, I can assure you that Marcel is NOT good at all. His Food is not thought out to the point that it would be well executed in a restaurant. He never thinks of the flavor of the food and then how he would make it better. His Salmon dish tonight was sooooo boring. And what is his thing with Salmon and beets, it is not that great of a combination. If he wins it will be out of luck and not skill. He has lost the real concept of good cooking , which is take a great ingredient and make its great flavors shine and is only interested in making stupid foams.
Shhhhhhh!!!!! The Marcel Fan-Club will come out with their pitchforks and torches if they hear you say ANYTHING disturbing against their Prince (of Darkness)!!!

How did TomC find out about this?
That's what I was wondering. Did Marcel call him? Or one of the other cheftestants? Or maybe one of the camera people?
It seems TomC found out from Production!! Marcel and the rest didn't have a chance to explain themselves!! I knew Cliff was going when TomC dropped in like that!! Good riddance!! What an idiot!! I'd sue!! I can't believe people can think this assault was only a joke and Marcel should 'suck' it up!! I'd love to see what they'd do if in a similar position!! Cliff wouldn't be running around now if it had been me!! lol!!
I think they should have asked Marcel if he felt like it was an "aggressive attack" or if he thought it was just a silly prank--and they shouldn't tell him what the consequences would be for either answer. Who knows? By morning, maybe Marcel had cooled off and decided that it was just a prank and no one got seriously hurt, so no big whoop. I just think that Marcel should have had some input.
To me, the word "aggressive" implies anger. If that is Tom's interpretation of it, then asking Marcel was a must. I guess it would all depend on their definition of the word.

Sam is a d*ck. He instigates alot off camera, but lately the camera has caught him. He was egging others on to go bully Marcel more. He was laughing his but off when Cliff was holding Marcel down.
Give me a break. someone said it is Marcel's fault because of the way he acts. So all parents with tempermental children that are driving us nuts should just go hold them down, heck go drown them because hey they make us react they like. You all are full of sh*t.
There is never any reason to treat someone badly or with cruelity. As Cliff, Ilian, Frank, Betty, Sam have done to Marcel. He is unthinkingly arrogrant and obnoxious but they have all been downright maliciously cruel and mean.
Cliff would have gone home either way, his was the worst meal and the judges mentioned that on tape. Cliff was set to leave no matter what.
Elia - did no one see this coming!! Remember when she 'lost it' and smeared chocolate over her face and caused that little episode a while back. Elia can't handle stress or inperfection. She likes to have control and when she can't control things she loses it and does crazy things (things she can control) - she also left the kitchen - I totally lost it for her. She lost my respect as a chef. You don't just quit when things don't go your way. Talk about childish!
Then go and do something stupid like shave your hair because you feel out of control and need to control something so you smear chocolate on your face or shave your hair. Dude, get real!
although i hate to say it but Sam has won the most challenges overall. He may very well win this thing. Aside from the junk he has said he does bring a bit more maturity (might be decieving though) than Marcel in kitchens, but I think Marcel could be potentially a great chef with more to offer than Sam in the long term. Ilain and Elia, nothing there.

I hadn't read those yet and I sort of just posted the same thing about the STOP...So why are Sam and Ilan even still in this?????? Hhmmmm.....Why did Gail seem so chummy with Cliff tonight????
Haven't a clue.
Human nature I guess. If you ignore reality, you can pretend it doesn't exist.

It wasn't Sam's responsibility to control it. Cliff is an adult (or at least is of age to be one... lol) and should be (and WAS) held accountable for his actions.
While Sam couldn't have controlled what was happening, he did contribute when he told them to go get Marcel after Marcel had broken free of Cliff and left the room. In this instance, Sam shares in the guilt of the offence.

At least Cliff accepted responsibility for what he did and apologized to Marcel & everyone.

Anytime you saw a piece of video with the red button and word 'record' in the top left it is the camera they borrowed. But yes, there was other recordings from the camera crew in house.

You could be McDoonald's fry flipper as far as we know. I thought Marcel's potato cannoli was exceptional..as did the guest judge. I'd take his word for it. While the salmon was average, at least it was not something one would not serve in a restaurant, like chocolate/liver truffle.
I doubt he'd be working for Robuchon if he was as bad as you make out.
Sam shined best, foodwise. No doubt about it. Wish he weren't such a wishy-washy leader.
He has a point, remember Marcel was going to try to do some asparagus wrapped in bacon for the kids at camp glucose, before Betty and Frank saved him from himself, not to mention the bacon and avacado icecream.
Very true.
Bacon & Avocado Ice Cream?!What planet is Marcel from anyway?!
UGH!
Those kids at the camp don't realize how lucky they are that the "reasonable minds" of the troop stepped in and thwacked Marcel's idea into the trash.

Hmmm I would tend to think that maybe since Gail has actually met Cliff, there is an off chance he is a good person who made a poor choice. But feel free to analyise away Dr. Phil.
From Gail's blog:
"We, of course, realize that what happened was meant to be a joke and I am certain the chefs wish, just as much as we do, that they could take it all back."

I so stoked for Marcel!! He cud be a Top Chef! He's been the bud of jokes and see him crawl into a hole, but he perseveres as a chef! Although everyone kinda dislikes him.. he is intriging.. and just a little getting to know.. eventually we all begin to like him. I am rooting for Marcel. Yeah! he's short on some things.. but who's perfect! hopefully he will be more humble if he wins... he cud be a great chef and person.. you gotta understand.. some people are different, but when you get to know them they cud be nice to get acquianted with! What has happened to him, put him in a place where he's exposing his vulnerability. I feel sorry for Cliff.. for pulling that prank, but brought out the decent side of Marcel.

Agreed...it does seem somwhat moot because based on judges statements regarding the dinner I do not think there is any question that Cliff would have been sent home anyways. I also agree that Clif handled his exit gracefully including his goodby to Marcell... he did a much better job of that than Betty.
