I love Top Chef, and this season has been great, but tonight's decision was offensive on many levels. I understand that the situation with Marcel got out of control, and I understand the producers and Chef being concerned, but kicking Cliff off was completely uncessary. If it had been Sam or Ilan on top of Marcel I DO NOT believe they would have been kicked off tonight, but a big black man - immediately he must go. Even worse was the fact that NO ONE involved in the prank even considered standing up for Cliff. Sam was sitting on the couch, part of the prank and could have stopped it any time. Shouldn't he have also been sent off for his participation? Ilan was the one who was getting the clippers. Was he not also responsible? Instead of sitting down with all involved and talking with them, a swift decision was made - the black man must go. I guess I should have expected it. Reality TV always has to make a villain out of its African-American characters.

Shame on Top Chef!

Are we watching the same show? Billy Joel's wife had less than one-thousandth the class, the charm, the beauty, the charisma, the intelligence, and the articulation that Padma has!

Padma rocks!

I *THINK* so. I'm watching TOP CHEF SEASON 2. Were you watching something on VH1 or E! and changed channels too quickly perhaps? You know, we DID just have the Golden Globe Awards this week, so you might've confused Padma with one of the other camera-fodder interviewers. : '|

Nope, not Betty, but with the way this show is being run/judged, i really have a new appreciation for all she and Amy and Marissa were going through. Otto, feh, but Amy should've really stuck around. Giving Elia a "gimme" and eliminating herself was a MAJOR mistake. She (Amy) has more talent in her nail clippings than Elia has in her entire being. : /

KINJIRU, And it's NOT "Attack Dog", it's "MISTER ATTACK DOG"! ; )

THE JUDGES ARE MENTALLY DEFICIENT!

OH MY GOD! HOW BLIND CAN YOU BE?!

The backwards alien, Marcel, fails when put to the brass tacks, and is advancing by default actions, NOT SKILL. He's about as talented a chef as the guy at Denny's down the road!

FEH!

DOUBLE-FEH!

Thank GOD i remove the commercials when i watch stuff. No way Bravo deserves a cent for putting this biased, pseudo-yuppy butt-kissing on the air. : '(

AT LEAST THE NEXT SHOW THEY ELIMINATE *2* (and i'll bet just about anything it's Sam Vs "The Precious li'l antichrist himself"). : '(

Betty, good to hear from you again! Nobody's hatin' on Marcel as good as you.

I don't think it had anything at all to do with race. I think the reason that Sam and Ilan weren't told to leave is because they didn't lay a hand on Marcel. They used bad judgement, but they didn't break any rules.

Marcel wasn't going anywhere after the assault!! I'm sure they said to themselves, that that would be the best way to get past this DRAMA and maybe save themselves from a lawsuit!! Elia should have "bit" it!! She is wrong in the head!! lol!! I thought Cliff would make the finals, but it looks as if he would have been auf'd regardless!! His dish sucked!! Ilan seemed to be in the driver's seat putting out dishes so advanced due to his experience at a really nice restuarant!! Sam is lucky to make it after the "Raw" challenge!! Good luck in Hawaii guys!! I can't wait to get a better look at the locals twirling those fiery batons!! Yummmm!!

Wow. Reading the blogs tonight was a revelation. Extremely helpful in understanding the episode, esp Harold and LeeAnne. Very well written and balanced in judgment.

I'm gaining more appreciation for Sam, though his lack of mature leadership still rankles. There is no doubt that, now, as far as cooking goes, he is the best of the bunch. Ilan's cooking is undercut because he seems to rely heavily on what he already serves at the restaurant where he works, so the innovation is lacking, as we saw in the chocolate/liver truffles. A great chef of other's recipes, but I don't think he has the creative spark, at least nor from what I''ve seen in competition. Marcel has the oposite problem, he is extremely innovative, but lacks a basic groundedness...still too much in his head, too detached, Again, I think this is Asperger's-related, but even so, it is a limitation.

I'm glad LeeAnne ends with "The best is still to come."

Kinjiru,
How would you like it if my 230lb husband woke you up tonight from a sound sleep, pinned you to the ground, wrestled with you (you not knowing why) and gave you rug burns? Not a pretty picture? It scared me watching it where my heart was racing.
I have watched this series from episode one and I just don't see why Marcel deserves this. Marcel has had to perform under very stressful circumtances. Ilan used all 10 burners before Marcels dish went out if it was Marcel did this instead everyone would be complaining how awful it was he did this. But Marcel didn't do this. The worst he did this episode was not help Sam plate. Cmon, he was truthful, he didn't have the time. But he did help everyone when he was done with his own dish. Sam is an instigator and I agree that he and Ilan should be accessories to assault. In the real world Cliff would be in jail and Ilan and Sam would be facing charges also.

Tonight's show was actually sickening. Cliff is a sick person and should be in jail for assault, he clearly doesn't understand what he did was wrong. He's a "rage-aholic"
and a dangerous person. He was lucky they only kicked him off the show...And don't the Bravo execs sound thrilled with this horrible behavior. Yeah, bigger ratings! This is a new low. Sick

That said, he didn't deserve what Cliff did. I understand how jokes like that can get out of hand, but it was way over the top and they did the right thing by sending him home. Sam couldn't have controlled this no matter how hard he would have tried.

It wasn't Sam's responsibility to control it. Cliff is an adult (or at least is of age to be one... lol) and should be (and WAS) held accountable for his actions.

Quote:

At least Cliff accepted responsibility for what he did and apologized to Marcel & everyone.

Yes... and it did seem like he was sincere.

Ahh Every time I try to go to bed I see one more...lol

Sam should have said STOP!!!
Elia should have said STOP!!
Ilan should have said STOP!!!

JMHO!

Good night ohmy.gif))))

Agreed...it does seem somwhat moot because based on judges statements regarding the dinner I do not think there is any question that Cliff would have been sent home anyways. I also agree that Clif handled his exit gracefully including his goodby to Marcell... he did a much better job of that than Betty.

Evening Ford just jumping in hope your staying warm..lol Cold all over the states.

O.K. my view on the show...Yes Cliff had the worst food all the judges said so...plus what he did to Marcel was assult, Ilan was not any better saying crap like come on Elia we got him help us...yes a childish prank that went way to far. I have only gotten to page 16 and decided to jump ahead to post ...so forgive me if this has been already adressed. But...I do have to give props to SAM he was the only one to tell Cliff during this whole fiasco to stop it and to let Marcel go, that it had gone to far...I think he went as far as to tell Ilan to shut up. Now I only the saw the show once and then went to bed I don't have Tivo...so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was Sams voice in the back ground. Still theese are adults and that was plain assault and Battery on Cliffs part tonight. Hel* even if Cliff only spit in Marcels face he could of gone to jail it's that simple. Marcel was pissed did you see the way he knocked that camera...I would of been pissed too if someone had grabbed me while I was sleeping and pulled me out of bed to try and pull a prank on me!

Marcel did not call the police, he did not run to the producers he locked himself in the bathroom and went back to sleep and I'm sure re-did his hair but that is besides the point..lol

So Cliff was asked to leave so what he is lucky that is all that happened in MHO.

TC's Executive Producer:

1. We allowed the chefs to have a camera because one of them had asked for one because it was their last night and they wanted to mess around and have some fun. I think we all expected them to film themselves doing impressions of Tom and Padma and some of the producers (that's what usually happens and it makes for fun extra content for the Bravo website).

2. The chefs know that there is someone on the production team sleeping in a room nearby and that they can go to them at any time if they have a problem. Marcel could have done this but did not. We do not have producers sleeping actually in their rooms -- it has never been necessary to police grown adults and industry professionals like that.

3. The next morning, I got a call from a field producer who had arrived at the loft to find Elia and Ilan without any hair. I was furious with them as I felt it was kind of a juvenile prank to pull which undermined the dignity of the show (little did I know there was much worse to come).

4. Marcel did not come to the production team at any point the next morning to make a complaint about what had happened so it took a little while for us to find out. He was in an interview and towards the end he mentioned it rather casually to the producer who was interviewing him. The producer then asked him for the full details and notified me.

5. Once we saw the tape, we had absolutely no choice but to ask Cliff to leave. I was very sorry to have to do so, as it was clear it was supposed to be a prank but it clearly went too far.

6. From the moment Tom told him he had to go, Cliff handled himself like a total gentleman.

7. I think Marcel was genuinely sorry that Cliff had to leave like that. (I think I would have been a lot less forgiving -- it must have been pretty unpleasant to be woken up to that).

8. It was a little embarrassing in front of Chef Eric Ripert. We were so proud to have him on the show and he had been impressed by the meal in Santa Barbara. It was all going so well, dignified and all about great food. Then all of a sudden we were at judges table with one chef missing and two chefs missing their hair. It was like we had been hit by a crazy-bomb.

9. It was a strange irony that the judges felt that they most likely would have eliminated Cliff anyway. They could still have decided to eliminate another chef but chose not to. I think it was the right call, as it would have felt unfair to eliminate a chef for being the second worst in the challenge -- especially with the stakes being so high.

I've been producing television for about 12 years now and nothing quite like this has happened to me before -- it was a strange and uncomfortable situation for everybody. Of course it does make for a very compelling episode and for a producer 'compelling' stories are the holy grail. But this is one story I would prefer not to be telling.

And I quote from Tom:

Marcel’s chicken wasn’t great, but he had actually made a stab at chicken confit -- a preparation often used with duck leg, in which the meat is cured in spices and slowly cooked in its own fat. If the chicken confit had worked, it would have been unusual and delicious. Most likely Marcel cooked the wings at a temperature high enough to make them safe, but the faulty execution gave the dish a soft, undercooked texture and appearance. And though the judge’s confit discussion did not make it into the episode, we discussed it and agreed that, like Sam’s unsuccessful watermelon dish, Marcel’s chicken showed a stab at doing something interesting. Also, Marcel was responsible for the vegetable tempura, which all agreed was delicious.

"Most likely Marcel cooked the wings at a temperature high enough to make them safe..." Most Likely? Hmmm sounds like damage control to me. Especially since it was described as Raw.

Who said they were raw?

Was it Raw or Rare? I cant recall but I'm thinking it was one or the other. Either way its an open invitation for Uncle Sal to visit the Colon.

People keep harping on the undercooked chicken like it's a big deal. Doesn't it make sense to assume it must not really have been that big a deal or the judges would have booted him out no matter how good the tempura was? There's very little worse to eat than uncooked poultry (except chocolate ganache stuffed with chicken liver) so, if it had really been that horrible, they would have eliminated him for it without a doubt. Using logic, the results of the judging would indicate that this is a tempest in a teapot that Marcel haters are just flogging to justify their own conceits.

My guess is that people don't like eating UN/UNDERCOOKED POULTRY. If i remember my Pre-Med years, there was something VERY UNHEALTHY about eating raw poultry. ; |

If the production crew decided against eliminating Marcel for even THINKING about trying to "slip that by" the judges, then it's proof positive that the show is only interested in controversy, not cooking, and turns the entire contest into a farce. On HELL'S KITCHEN last season, someone tried to push off undercooked chicken. THEY GOT ELIMINATED because in the "real world" if you push "foul fowl" (HA!) you usually wind up paying for it a$ the year$ pa$$ along (unless the person that got "tricked" by the dish, oh, *DIES* as a cause of eating it! Sheez! And this twit is pushing the idea that he's some "great thing" because some restauranteur has him in his staff?! HA! Not anymore when he sees the crap Marcel tried to pull!).

Sam wins it hands-down. Yeah, he might not be the "leader" we'd all like him to be, but this is TOP CHEF not TOP GENERAL. We're looking for "excellence" in the kitchen, not a battlefield.

I have read through all the posts and now watched the episode 3 times. IMO Cliff went to far by breaking the rules but I am also reading through the posts and now we are comparing this to rape? Now unless Cliff dropped his pants, and went into Brokeback Mountain mode, I would not have immediately thought all that... and I am a woman. He was not out to intentionally hurt him, he wasn't planning to beat up him. What he did was not right but comparing to a gang rape? Sorry I don't see where they compare. I think Frank was more of violent threat than Cliff.

Now before everyone jumps on my back - I am not condoning what any of them- and IMO ALL of them were involved, did but I am questioning the severity of how some people looked at it.

Yes it was extremely stupid and went to far but I look at all of them like they are living in a frat house.. ..A very drunken frat house. I remember in college, rushing fraternities and sororities, the hazing and other stuff that happened,... vaseline in the hair? Nair in the shampoo? Putting underwear in the freezer on top of fish so your undies totally smell fishy? Shaving the eyebrows? Hand in cold water to make you pee in bed? All stupid pranks, all not at all very nice. But filing assault charges for any of that? Suing all parties involved? Wow.

From some of the posts I have read, some may think frying in the electric chair may not be enough of a fitting punishment for Cliff and Bravo.
SLuvsMarcel
I can see your point.. but it's hard to find a way to deal with issues like these. I just wish Cliff wud have stopped him from doing this. Ilan and Ilya should have realized.. if Sam didn't want to get his hair clipped.. then it should have stopped there. It was a bit odd to wake someone up out of their sleep and subject them to that. If we would have seen more, we could be more objective. It's hard to see it all.. we need to see who instigated and got Cliff to act on that.. did Sam or Ilan put him up to it? I wanna know!! too!!! but we should have seen some more scolding of the other two chefs.. Sam and Ilan.. then I would agree that the show wasn't so biased... as it stands I can see how it can affect others. It's Cliff's opportunity to show and grow from his character to demonstrate he is more than what people judge him to be. That would make me stand up and be proud of him! and make shows like these take a second thought on how they are going to carry out such a daunting task of handling issues like these.

Nope. What I'm saying is that the producers finally show footage where Marcel is the instigator.

I've been blaming Marcel the entire season but it seems the footage CLEARLY shows him as the instigator.

I still don't see how Marcel MAKES these people act as childish as they are. Children blame others for their behavior instead of taking responsibility. Marcel has helped others this entire season and yet still been the subject of endless harrassment. Where in this episode did he "instigate" anything? He simply said that he could not help plate Sam's dishes. Ever think that might just be the case? These children on the show this season are as sensitive as 12 year old girls and take everything personally. They should be more like Marcel and let it roll off their backs like professionals do.

"Marcel" and "Professional" don't belong said in the same statement. If anything, he's the most UN-PROFESSIONAL of all those contestants, still in the running or Eliminated. Heck, even Michael had more "professionalism" than Marcel (but Michael was too much of a "Good Ol' Boy", and there comes a time when you HAVE to take things seriously, especially in a contest like this one).

Just Marcel's comment about "not caring if Sam does the course He was given the right to chose for" because he (Marcel) was "just going to do whatever he wanted anyway, and let the cards fall where they will". THAT showed obvious lack of respect for the show, it's production staff, and the contest as a whole. If he can [expletive deleted] about Betty using Sugar instead of Nutrasweet (an all out problem when you're cooking a menu for children that might be ADHD or Diabetics), what makes his crap not stinky? (Yes, but i didn't want to get censored by using the ACTUAL words, but we all know what the phrase was, i hope). ; )

It was Sam and Mia that brought up Betty's use of sugar not Marcel. Please get your facts straight.

I wonder if restaurant owners, managers and executive chefs call this season Who Not To Hire.

I say cut the cord on all of them and award the $100,000 to Tiffany from last season. She may be bitchy but at least she's not infantile.

ONE BETTER!!!

Dump ALL these losers, and give the entire shabang to that camp! I'm sure they could use some new kitchen gear for the kids, and $100,000 is more than enough for them to keep a staff on-hand to cook HEALTHY foods for the campers!

Hey! BRAVO could air it! Make it the "TOP CAMP" show! They can have cooks from different camps trying to Out-Cook cooks from other camps, and use a 3rd party as the "Guest Judges" for taste and such! Winning team gets Elia and Cliff for a month to make them fish sticks! ; >

People hate marcel because he's an arrogant tattle tale, who always tries to pick fights. like the fixtures shop incident. I dont see how people can put the blame on sam and ilan for their reactions to marcel. The blame has to go on marcel for that simple cause and effect. His over all personality caused them to react because he wont stop being what he is.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? AH-HUH! AH-HUHJ!

yep..after even seeing this episode..the Marcel hate group comes forth with Marcel hate and blame...BLAME!..spews forth..hahahaha..

Glad they are all going!
Elia looks a little strange bald.
Ilan ..(I hate saying this)...looks HAWT bald!!!
Sam-good for redeeming yourself by helping Marcel-too bad you chickened out of the head shaving-but we all forgive ya.

Looks like more drama in Hawaii! LOL

And this time, it looks like the drama is caused by Marcel.

[NOD NOD]

But it's not just this episode. He's been doing this since day 1. It's just that it took driving Cliff to violence to show the world what a horror Marcel REALLY IS.

[sigh]

: '(

"Bye, Cliff. It would've been cool seeing you at the last show against Sam once all was said and done".

Does "kinjuru" mean delusional in Japanese?

Nope, but it's easy enough to find out what the word means in any library that carries ENGLISH-JAPANESE Grammars (or if you just read the book SHOGUN by James Clavell). ; )

Oh, knock it off. What if ANY of the chefs held ELIA down AGAINST HER WILL? By people who made it CLEAR they didn't like her? Oh, my God, the outcry would echo from one end of the land to the other. The person responsible would probably be arrested!!! So why is it ok to terrorize ANYONE? Regardless of race or sex? Oh, but because Cliff's black, that's supposed to buy him what, latitude to physically assault someone? Why? Until the rules apply to EVERYONE racism will NEVER DIE. Who's REALLY practicing racisim here? The fact that he just wasn't as good, that he bullied almost everyone around him, that his attitude sucked, buys him what? A gimme because he's black? No. No. No. You need to rethink. His color isn't the issue here. The fact that he took his bullying to an unacceptable level is. Marcel isn't Cliff's buddy that he can "goof around with". Cliff's actions were abusive and scary and needed to be dealt with. I didn't see a "big black man", I saw a mean, aggressive, macho jerk venting something only he knows about.

Exactly. These "Marcel should file assault charges" posts are pretty over the top. Same with the lawsuits. Yes lets jam up the legal system with more petty lawsuits.

Thinking like this pretty much the the same misguided logic that argues that tag and dodgeball should be banned from schools and that childrens sports shouldn't have winners or losers.

If it was up to these people in 20 years we will all have to walk around incased in sanitized bubble wrap watching episodes of the hit game show Tie Tie or Draw, where everybody wins!!!

Flavor-wise, he definitely is not in the same class as Sam or Ilan, but his presentations are lovely. It still has to taste good though, and that's where I think the controversy lies when it comes to Marcel...do his flavor profiles really stand up as superior among the other chefs? I'm sure this would be a never-ending debate.

AS to Marcel's flavors:

"Marcel’s Wild King Salmon, although presented in what I thought was an unoriginal fashion (not what we expected from our resident Foam King), was prepared just right. The display of heart shaped potatoes may have been trite, but the flavor combination was a crowd pleaser."

Yes, Marcel had a slam dunk with that dish in terms of flavor, but slam dunks for Marcel's dishes are not consistent and that is simply the point that I'm trying to make. I'm not a Marcel hater by any means, just a TC fan.

But I haven't seen consistency from anyone...Sam is perhaps the most consistent, with the watermelon, blue cheese brulee an exception. Sam, by all rights, should win. He' sjust sucha wanker...and so I vote Marcel by default. I think he'll grow into it.

I could in no way vote for Ilan. as well as he has done..he is truly a toxic personality and would turn any kitchen into a chamber of horrors. He' s a button-pusher, a crazy-maker, as they say in the biz. No profit from such as he.

Elia is also good, but i would never trust a chef who would call it quits mid-service. Got to "make it work!"

If Sam were more mature and showed more leadership, he's be a natural. But he's not a natural, at least not from what we've seen, and certainly not from seeking our votes becase he is "low on cash." I mean, get a job already!

But that's EXACTLY the way Marcel is playing this! He's not playing to win, he's playing to "advance by default". Doing it THAT way, he needs to show *zero* talent.

The problem is i think that Sam is trying to do the same thing in regards to his "leadership qualities". If you'll notice, over the last few episodes, Sam's taken more of a "Forward Thinker" / Leadership role. It's subtle, but it's there. I think he's just playing it like Poker, knowing when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, etc. Once in his own restaurant, it'll be another "Harold Success Story" kind of thing ("Winner Makes Good", you know?).

Still joke it was asault plain and simple....even as something as spitting in Marcels face could land you in jail as asault. The thing that bothered me was Cliff pulling Marcel out of bed while Marcel was sleeping throwing him on the floor and then putting him in a full nelson while Marcel just hung there. If that is your idea of a JOKE well we will agree to dissagree.

How about putting the name of products on Padma's chest? This will allow her to make a worthwhile contribution to the show.

Padma blows the doors off of Joel's Uptown Girl. Why are you so threatened by women that are both beautiful and intelligent? Mrs. Joel had all of the charm and screen presence of a cirgar store indian.

Padma Rocks!

Where do you get the idea that i am threatened by women of strong character who are also beautiful? Nowhere in ANY of my statements have i said anything, nor suggested anything, that would validate that comment. I have equally praised truly strong women of character (such as Mia), as well as men of character (such as Sam (i would say Cliff, but tonight's episode really hit hard)).

I'm not saying it wasn't assault nor was it right. I said it started out like a joke and it was obviously a dumb idea because there was little thought to the outcome in regards to Marcel.

That being said, Cliff was removed from the show and Marcel wasn't seriously hurt and seemed to accept Cliff's apology so I don't see the need for the police, lawyers, restraining orders, body guards, No fly zones or U.N. Peace keepers.

See we do agree and I think Marcel took the high road he just locked himself in the bathroom and re-did his hair! I'm sure he could of made a much bigger deal of it but he did not.
