It pissed them all off to see his single-minded dedication, and I think it began to make them uneasy and perhaps even frightened that Marcel seemed totally in command of what he was doing as he cooked. None of their mind games were working, and it really shook them, I think.
If they had all paid more attention to business rather than building themselves up by tearing Marcel down, the result could have been different. But Marcel's ignoring them and being completely professional in the kitchen just got under their skins so much that I think it did have an effect on them. Certainly the final attempt to discredit Marcel was so pathetic as to make me question their professionalism. Elia in particular started to speak of it as if she was superior to Marcel, was confiding to the judges as an equal professional, and just assuming that they would jump all over Marcel as soon as she mentioned the hot-button word "cheated." However, all she was really saying, essentially, was that Marcel was beneath them all. How stunning that she couldn't accept that Marcel's skill set had been perfectly matched with this challenge and that he had done a truly magnificent job.
Excellent post! You know, since Elia says that she trained Marcel, you would think it would give her some joy and proud moments to know that her student was doing so well. Guess the old saying "Pride goeth before the fall" is too true for these people.
I think someone in a earliar post hit it on the head and pointed out what many including me failed to see about Marcel... this whole season he has maintained his focus on one thing ... the goal of winning . He has gone about his business with that in mind and I think that is what pissed everyone else off. He refused to play "nice" in the kitchen ,doing whatever he needed to do for himself first and then and only then would he help others. His lack of "people" skills may have been just his focus coming through. One thing about him... he said he was there to win from the first show. I think he REALLY meant it and that was ALL he cared about along with what HE had to do to do it. All else was not important.
Deleted part of that, but you are right Fordman...he always said he wasn't here to make friends, he was there to win. And I hope that is exactly what happens.
Well, the part about not making friends is definitely right.
However, it seems that he needs to have the help from some of the other competitors to win the final.

Casually mentioning the attack by Cliff was the way Marcel acted the entire competition. He would never take strong action but do the little things required to piss off the others or to get others into troubles. The "casual mention" was perfectly calculated and fits his previous MO perfectly.

There is a HUGE difference between a bad prank where you get some rug burns perpitrated by people you know and some stranger smashing a bottle in your face for apparently no reason.

the thing that makes me 99% sure that marcel wins is that Bravo has always made the winner sympathetic. and so far, the three least sympathetic contestants are Ilan, Betty and Elia. Sam is hugely popular and ends up on Marcel's team.
So, unless they have a cutaway about Ilan supportiung a village in africa which grows saffron, the chances of his being the winner are nearly nil.
They are simply not going to have a winner the audience finds smarmy. And Sam's going over to Marcel's side will give him enough sympathy with the audience that there will be no outcry. After all, if Sam respects him that much, who could not?
Too true. Someone said something earlier about Ilans MY SPACE putting his income at $100,000 or some BS. and said that contracts make it punishable to reveal the winner. Therefore, since that is true, and he says he has that money, the only way to NOT get into trouble for breach of contract is to be lying. Which leave the winner to be MARCEL!

Just a thought or two , here. Many of the booted chef this year at one point or another turned up his/her nose at a quickfire or elimination challenge, sniffing that they didn't do that kind of cooking.
Last year, Harold made this complaint in a vastly more elegant manner. He would say, "This isn't what I came here for."
Very professional. He's waiting for the really superior ingredients and leeway to bust out and show what he can really do, but, at the same time, he is careful not to diss the importance of the particular audience or ingredients (kids, transvestites, Junior League microwaving moms, vending machine food, etc.). He just puts his nose to the grindstone to push through the challenge, hoping that the good stuff will come eventually.
He wasn't any older than the finalists this year, but BOY what a huge difference in maturity, diplomacy, and professionalism.
Gosh, who did this same thing this year???? Anybody amongst these immature, siniveling, crybabies??? Could it be . . . . . . OMG . . . Marcel?
The kid has an unusual presence for one so young, and it definitely got under others' skins because they just didn't accept it coming from him. If Marcel had come in a $2,000 suit each time like Stephen from last year, the combination of the visual and the vibe would have matched. How differently they all might have reacted if they had seen him for the quietly confident adult that he has turned out to be. Yes, they may still have seen him as Stephen-like uppity (a distinct step up from the merely annoying), but they would at least have respected him as a cook more.

I don't think Sam hated or hates Marcel. i've always noticed that, unlike Betty, Ilan and Elia, Sam always congratultes Marcel on his wins...even the latest. There is a great deal of decency in Sam. He let Marcel get on his nerves, but Sam always was a good sport throughout....well, with a few exceptions, but who's counting?

He instigated situations, let others take up the cause, often to their own detriment, & then resurfaced as the "voice of reason" as to why they should just let sleeping dogs lie. Sam certainly isn't a wicked villain, but he's far from a good hearted saint.

LOL. good hearted saint? no. but he does have a basic decency. yes, he's a vacilator...he's neither hot nor cold...a passive button pusher...but you can see him struggle, which is at least a sign of conscience, unlike
Ilan who seems to lack a conscience all together. I think that's what lost Sam the contest, he just lacks conviction....his bread is neither soft nor toasted, just kinda stale, but still integral.
