BravoBoardBoss
Welcome to the message boards for the series premiere of "Shear Genius"! Hosted by Jaclyn Smith (who is, may I say, amazingly gorgeous and classy), "Shear Genius' follows 12 hair stylists who must compete each week to see whose hairdo will carry the day.

In the first episode, the stylists feel the heat when faced with their first short-cut challenge. They will have one hour to show off their signature style. The winner of the challenge will have first choice of model and station in the upcoming elimination challenge.

Then, in the elimination challenge, the stylists are tasked with creating a work of art using professional models with long hair and a collection of arts and crafts materials. Who has the top hairdo, and who's going home?

Joining Jaclyn Smith each week are:
- famed celebrity hairstylist and designer Sally Hershberger, who serves as lead judge on the series;
- Michael Carl, fashion director of Allure and fellow judge;
- Rene Fris, accomplished stylist, and the 'salon manager' (i.e. drool-worthy mentor) to the stylists.
- A different amazing guest judge each week. The guest judge for Episode 101 is none other than Frederick Fekkai!

All four of the regular judges will be blogging weekly at BravoTV.com, along with the guest judge for episode 2, Roy Teeluck, who will be covering the entire series. Check the BravoTV.com website later tonight, after the show's over on the east coast, to read their thoughts!

Also, a fun thing to do while you watch -- or listen-- to the show: count up all the interesting accents you'll hear! We've got two Brits, a South African, a Frenchman, and a bunch of regional American accents among the twelve stylists, and their mentor Rene is Danish.

"Shear Genius" moves to its regular 10 PM Eastern Wednesday night slot starting next week.

Please discuss Episode 101 in this particular message board thread! Enjoy!

OMG! The shows been on 20 minutes and its already way better then the entire season of Top Design. I want Dr. Boogie to do my hair and to go for drinks with Jim.

ok. listen. i need to get in touch with paul-jean. i hate the word interesting and i need a small amount of closet space.

cut my hair, paul-jean!
AmandahPandah
I NEED the dress worn by the models! Where can I get it??!
kgots127
PEACE OUT PAUL JEAN. That's what cockiness does to a person. So sad.

But talk about perfection... TAB IS ALREADY OWNING EVERY STYLIST.
Oseur
WTF. Lacey had nothing on Jean-Paul. Yeah, he may be arrogant (and could very well be rightly so), and his design suffered from uncontrolled form, but he didn't construct some extra-helmet head left over from Battle Star CRAPtica.

I was going to watch this show to watch him, but not any more. C'est le vie.
SnazzyChazzy
Agreed!
I love Paul Jean!
We share the same birthdate.

I am so dissapointed now after watchin the first episode. I so could have done such a much better job. I definetly will be auditioning for season two. I loved stacy and dr boogie. I even liked Tabathas final hair the best . However, I thibnk this will be a good competition and I like the fact that they are lookin for techinical things not just how " incredible" something looks.

The contestents are great. They have tons of personality and stage presence. My favorites are Jim and Dr. Boogie, too. Sally was great and has a personality, but what were the producers thinking about when they cast Jaclyn Smith as hostess. She exudes zero personality and reads her lines as if they are being fed to her a word at a time, and what is up with that guy Rene...is he related to Elmer Fudd. He is the good looking guy who belongs in front of a mirror admiring himself by himself. Best if he remains silent, because his voice ruins the visual.

EXCUSE me!!! "Rene Fris, accomplished stylist, and the 'salon manager' (i.e. drool-worthy mentor) to the stylists" --NOT AFTER HE OPENS HIS MOUTH!!!
Is that accent for real? Does he talk every week? HELP!! I don't know if I can handle that, if he talks each episode.
SORRY
ClarkKentBlues
Jim was right....his "hair art" WAS the only style that could actually be worn by anyone. It was also just about the only tasteful one.... And I'm sorry, the treasure chest was not only obvious, it was downright silly... But, judging by the ranking order at the beginning of the show, it's also obvious that the best stylist will probably not win anyway....
¬¬¬
BOOGITY BAM BOOM! I knew Carissa was the best stylist! Much better than Matt or Evan. TD is the best! Sally Hershberger is very cute, and bangable!
ThymeHBF
I was a client of Danna's up until I moved and if I had the money I would fly back to L.A. every few months to get my haircut by her! She has been the only one (my whole life) that could deal with my curly, thick hair! I LOVE HER and I really hope the judges see how amazing she is! I was so glad to hear the judges say that she KNOWS how to do hair! SO TRUE! GO DANNA!!!
cvfoto1
Dr. Boogie is the best hairdresser there is in this goup of unique personalities. He ROCKS IT WAIT & SEE !!!!
cvfoto1
BOOGIE IS THE BEST HAIRDRESSER THERE IS, YOU ALL WILL SEE.
cvfoto1
DR. BOOOOGGIIIEEE !!!!!!!! TEAR IT DOWN.

I am really liking this show. Not sure who I like best. I know

I was not surprised when Theodore won. I don't know why

except the risk he took, no matter how silly the treasure

chest was. Creativity was said to be the main point of this

challenge. I only remember one treasure chest.

I heart Theodore.
I loved Tyson's hairstyle.
This show is awesome.

ps. Still wanting that model dress....

Jaclyn performed the same way she always has; rather stiff!! She was a perfect Jackie O years ago as Ms Bouvier!! lol!!
Giselle63
I thought J-P's first style was a throwback to Charlie's Angels but at least it moved and was different. I liked the center of his second style but the rest was bad; as if he just clipped falls on the sides of her head. I would have kept him though and booted off the other white haired stylist on the chopping block with him.

I liked Tabitha's second style but wasn't that worn by Cher at the Academy Awards back in the 80's. Still, I would have chosen her to win over Toy Box Boy.

Thank God Top Design is over.

He's not any worse than the whiney witches on Top Design or the mousey voiced men. I only watched parts of three episodes and then had to switch the channel. It was so BORING and ANNOYING. I have my reservations about this show too but we'll see. I'll give it another two shows before I decide to block out time to watch it or decide that I can pass this one by.

Nothing can beat Project Runway, and when Top Chef focuses on the food and not the drama it's wonderful.
DJSisterSin
Tabatha should have stabbed Tyson with her shears or knocked him over for the rest of her feathers! You know the thought raced through her mind. She is brilliant!!!!!!!!
fresh
dr.boogie should win this, he is the best on this show and will shock you all, just wait and see. he has teh talent to make it big
bravisimo
Jaclyn Smith a little stiff but classy for sure and were those Kmart outfits that she was wearing Well, just when I was zoning in on the rebel of the bunch, he gets kicked off. What's a show without a rebel? I hope there is another one in that bunch. Will be watching next episode though either way.

This show was great- on par with project runway...it's amazing how BAD top design was and how GOOD all the other shows are. Great characters, cool judges, interesting challenges. I'll watch for sure! Jacklyn Smith is a great host.

I remember Cher doing that maybe 12-14 years ago when she won an Oscar; maybe for Moonlighting with Nicolas Cage!! She was beautifil wearing her usual Bob Mackie, very revealing, navel out with glitter type outfit! The hair was done up in a type of Indian feathered head-dress and was quite striking; all in black!! It wasn't a mohawk style; more like a crown of black feathers!! I echo the sentiment that I'm also glad TD is done!! Carisa must have learned from Tiffani and left without ranting and raving about being stabbed in the back!! She's still a whiny cow, but at least she didn't totally lose her mind at the end!! Matt was a real jerk throughout, but he was definately more high end in his designs!!

On par with Project Runway? Oh please. This is a mindless bit of fluff. The contestants at least have personalities, so it won't be dreadful to watch. But on par with the Cadillac of all competitive reality shows? Not on your life.

Jaclyn Smith at least is very nice and presents very well. But Rene is a jarring presence. I found it difficult to undestand what he was saying. I don't care how widely respected he is -- he sounded like a three-year-old with food stuffed in his mouth and he was a dissonant note. Didn't anybody learn anything from Katiebot? One annoying voice really ruins the mood.

I liked the weird cast. You can see the competitiveness burning in each one (unlike all the milquetoasts on Top Design) and the promise of delightful bitchiness and back-stabbing to follow.

This was a very nice debut even though I don't want to get sucked in to this show!! The personality and competitiveness will carry this show for a while!! Rene may be uncommunicable, but everyone seems to think he's stunning and are drawn to him; even the straight boys( or so they say)!! lol!!

So far, So good for this show!! Been waiting for a hairstylist competion, it's so befitting of this industry. I'm glad to see Paul-Jean gone, that's what over-confidence can do a career in hair, just when you think you know it all, there's always something more to learn. I'm just a little confused as to the "Nexxus professional" sponsorship,, aren't they now OTC?? so not professional product anymore, we've been working so hard at stopping product diversion the general public will get confused as to whats "professional" product after seeing this.

Loreal (Project Runway) is over the counter as well. Sponsoring one of these shows is a smart move and garners a lot of publicity.

Exactly so. He's undeniable eye candy, but the voice kills any professional demeanor he may have, at least on screen. You are just getting sucked into the rhythm of the show, and then have to come to a screeching halt to try deciphering what he just said. Keep him if he actually had just had a wisdom tooth pulled and had a mouthful of cotton. Otherwise, ditch him for somebody who can speak.

While I don't want to be mean about somebody who may have a speech impediment, as a viewer I would prefer to understand what is being said.

Theodore is amazing, I'm very glad he won. Small town ohioians can never have enough rep! He blends creativity, style, and fun, all into an amazing hair piece! Great work T!
frankensteinsmom
I don't know what to think after watching the first episode. I am also a hairstylist. I began as a platform artist doing hairshows/salon work for about 6 or 7 years, becoming a freelance artist for the last 13 years. Those two worlds have always been SO different from each other. Much of the hair that you see at hair shows is not "wearable" or in a magazine such as ALLURE, and much of the hair that you see in magazines would never be seen in a show or salon magazine (i.e., messy or long and straight). I'm confused so I'm sure the contestants were too! I feel as though they were not told which direction to go in for either challenge. Were the styles supposed to be wearable? Fantasy/Runway? Both? The judges all have such different backgrounds, which is good. But they are all judging using different criteria, as you can tell by their comments.
This was especially evident in the very first contest giving them their "signature" style. I thought it was to be judged on how good their technical skills were. Tabitha's haircut looked technically perfect! Sally said it was not wearable. Who said anything about it having to be "Wearable"? I don't remember ever hearing that criteria. Her haircut was beautiful and I thought it very unfair for her to lose that competition.(I don't know any of the contestants). I believe she showed SO much more expertise than others. It was also supposed to be a "Short Cut". Several of the contestants didn't go short! Again, the criteria was not spelled out properly. And last, if anyone wants to win anything, they had better do a shaggy, piece-y haircut. That is the only thing I've ever seen Sally Herschberger do and judging from the first contest, that is what is going to make them win! I hope things become more clear as time goes on.

Ok, I can't help but bring this up, and since I can't make a new post for some reason, I'll start it here. How in the hell is Dr. Boogie going to have the audacity to say he isn't gay, when it's flamingly obvious he is, even when he isn't drooling over Rene. It's a shame, because he isn't fooling anyone.
mraleigh02
How many episodes do you think it will take before they have them grooming a dog? I can just see it now.
Like the show so far.

My daughter and I could have sworn we'd seen Paul Jean before on another reality tv contest show...after racking our brains we remembered where we thought we'd seen him. He looks suspiciously like Joseph Kennard, who was on HGTV's "Design Star" last summer. Is he really some actor they're hiring to fill out their ranks?

Don't think so, I think he trained with Jose Eber (forgive spelling) and possibly still works in Jose's salon. But then what do I know, I could be wrong.

Lol, I am so glad I was not the only one caught between shock and laughter after hearing that Rene guy speak. I mean, come on, his English pronunciation is dreadful, and he is catty! There will never be another Tim Gunn!!! The PR contestants have it sooooo good.

As for the Theodore creation, it was kind of cute, but they actually fit entire birdcages into hair-do's during pre-revolutionary France, so I am not super impressed. I thought the feathered mohawk was really nice, as was the bridal hair, and the donuts.

As much as I might enjoy seeing the French guy booted, I have to say his do was less reprehensible than the blond girl ranked second to last. I still need to learn these names, lol.
sfbaygirl
Oh, and did anyone notice that the judges were actually laughing at the models during the show? They seemed somewhat unprofessional.

HERE HERE!! I'm glad to finally have a show recognizing the art of hair! I agree with the Nexxus objection. Diversion is a big problem. I'm already prepping for season 2 auditions. As for Rene, his first impression left me cold. I loved watching Sally judging the stylists work. You could see she was frustrated by the overuse of asymmetry in the short cut. Thats why Paul-Jean won. He kept it real, did'nt try too hard. I think they made a mistake letting him go, arrogant or not.
jessicawu
DOES ANYBODY HAVE PICTURES OF THE FIRST CHALLENGE? NOT THE ART CHALLENGE, BUT THE ONE WHERE THEY ALL CUT THE MANNEQUINS' HAIRS. I REALLY LIKED THEODORE'S HAIRCUT AND WANT TO TRY MY HAIR LIKE THAT. PLEASEEE????
LVmom
I have to agree with frankensteinsmom about the "fantasy hair challenge". I was trying to figure out if they wanted wearable art or cutting edge design. 15 years in the biz myself including surviving a similar contest for a platform job and I was confused-do they want the craziness you see at hairshows or what you see in magazines? I do have to tell you all, watch Rene's face, and you know who will go. They are also probably looking for someone who has the skill and the talent, but who also will "gel" with coworkers. Diva does not seem to get you far in this competition unless you can mingle with the coworkers too, I guess. I will be watching to see if I am right!

Show looks find to me, started off great. Rene's voice did not annoy me.

i so agree with above. it was about the technical aspects. and it seemed to be that Tabatha did a, dry cut. look at the technical sharpness; the depth of the shapes and textures. technically it was perfect. she has skills that the other's should be; a bit intimidated.

I am excited for next week with what happens when the lifting of roots to blonde levels. are they going to through in models that actually have coloured RED hair. We all know in the industry just how difficult it is to lift coloured red to blonde. especially with the pure red pigment. this should be interesting.
