As long as no one has to wax anyone's back, I'm there. I'm not a fan of the especially "hairy" in general, so I'll be peeking at this ep through slitted fingers over the eyes. I'm curious about the "historical" part of the puzzle, though ...

I'll steer clear then, Actor! I don't usually have a problem with hair, so long as it's above the neck and firmly attached. It's mostly when the hair is "body hair" that's incredibly thick and/or growing in places you wouldn't normally expect it to grow, ot if it's a hair that's suddenly decided it wants to break free and see what life is like on the outside of the follicle--that's when it gives me the willies.

Ok, I usually don't post on these, but I have a big issue with tonights episode. I do medieval and elizabethan re-enactment, and am very familiar with the hairstyles of the period, including what accessories would be used and what the proper head gear was. I had an issue with the medieval and the elizabethan hairstyles. While the Medieval was pretty, hair was either worn lose or braided at hte sides of the head with a Caul over it to cover the hair that was decorated, usually with a hat over it. Only young unmarried women wore their hair down lose.

The elizabethan..... NO. It is more of a Gibson Girl style. Most of the hair was simple, with hats such as french hoods or gables covering hte actual hair. The hair was either braided and wound in the back with "rats" of fake hair under the front hair to get the two rounded areas, or the hair was pin curled and teased to get the front curly look seen in the wigs that Queen Elizabeth I wore.

I had a big issue with them saying that Tysons looked exactly like the period. Because its not.

On another note, is there a curse on winning the elimination challenge, because the winner seems to go home within 2 episodes (hmm, wonder if that means Tyson is heading home shortly)

Sorry to see Danna go, but her hair seemed too simple to win.

Anthony got close, and I agree, he needed the heighth on the top of her head, think Mary Tyler Moore.

I was actually scared that Tabatha would be leaving tonight. I wonder if it would have been possible to color one side red, and the other blue. It just seemed to blah to stay in the competition, albeit, it's probably hard to get that hair up high like that. And she's right, when punk came out, it wasn't perfect, it was just becoming a new fad. They were bathroom experiements until hair products especially for this came on the market. I remember using egg whites!!!

I loved Dr. Boogie's hair, whether it was period style or not, it was very glamous, and maybe would have been beautiful on Vanessa, if modified.

Tyson, not sure if it was period or not, remember the period could span 10-30 years, especially since there wasn't the media coverage on the newest, the latest and the greatest. And like bbq, there's all kinds of bbq in this country and to all people it's bbq!! Anyway, he did a cool job on the lady, complete with powder! Don't like him, but recognize his talents on this one, and did you see Tabatha extend her hand to him? She realized it too!!!

Ben and the Roaring 20s, very cute....loved the two tone hair!!! The hair in the bad lost its curl, but he probably didn't have time for the curls to dry.........he went up a spot in my book.

Totally agree with you about the styles of hair of the two periods. Also I do not think they wore powdered wigs or hair in Elizabethian England. There were periods when powdered wigs were worn in England but I do not think that was during Elizabeth I's reign. I could not believe they said Tyson capitured the period. Take a look at any portrait of Elizabeth or look at the movie Elizabeth with Helen Mirran or Cate Blanchette.

As for the Medieval hair at least it was as I remember, and I can be in error, hanging down.

Now for Dana's intrepretation of 1940's hair, she was right on...I have a picture of one of my teachers that was taken in the 1940's that is the mirror image of Dana's design. No, it was not the glamour hair of Hollywood but it was not Rosie the Riveter either.

I guess my real problem was the powdering of the hair of someone who was representing the Elizabethian hair style. Powdered wigs and hair may have been worn in other courts in Europe but I just cannot remember seeing any in pictures of Elizabeth I or her court and this was supposed to represent Elizabethian England. Her reign span many years so there was plenty of time to do almost anything hairwise.

Now if I am incorrect about the powdered hair in Elizabethian England and please let me know. rolleyes.gif

Nope, you are correct. The powdering of the wigs was a later time period, end of the 1600s to 1700s, the look with the dress as well was more of a Marie Antoinette feel than an elizabethan. The Farthingale was the wrong style for the 16th century. And you're right, medieval hair was either lose or covered by a veil or hat, only young women kept their hair loose, and once married they covered it.

I caught that about the dress that was suppose to be representative of Elizabethian England, agree more like Marie Antoinette's court. I also thought that the dress worn to represent Victorian England was a tad too glam. I thought Victorian was more reserved and her court was also even before Prince Albert died. But then what do I know.

Tyson's girl's hair & dress were of the Georgian style. Everything about the time period was wrong. I think the judges did a bad job saying his style was right on. I'm totally disappointed with Jaclyn Smith, I thought she was smarter then that. They had a computer. If I could go on line & in 2 minutes find Elizabethan hairstyles, that looked nothing like that, then what's so hard. I had to laugh when he was channeling for ideas the day of the challange.
The dress, that was just as wrong but what I'm wondering is, did they have that dress waiting for a model with Georgian hair because they matched or, did they have an Elizabethan dress waiting (flat breast panel & high ruff, full skirt without big hips) and then had to run to costume for something that matched the hair that Tyson did?

I don't usually do these blogs but I had contribute my input because all this was just, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!

One thing I"ll say about Tabitha & Tyson. They continue to underestimate each other. Let's get over it already, stop hating. If the Allure wall of fame is really the curse of death, then Tyson will be gone soon enough.

I just found this show, so I don't know what Tabatha & Tyson's history is, but her whole attitude concerning him is pretty uncomfortable. She reminds me of the Bad Seed, but she is an excellent stylist. Dr. Boogie and Daisy are my favorites. Last night show was pretty good. All the guys were changed for the better. I do agree that Danna's 40's style was flat. I thought she would do more of a Rita Hayworth glam look. Tabatha's Mohawk would have worked without those snow cone colors. I would have liked a black with dark and light auburn tips or vice versa. Ben's flapper was too messy. Daisy seems the most consistent – she plays it safe but still shines.

Have to ask wasn't Sally Herschberger one of the first that said Tyson was right on with his intrepretation of Elizabethian hairstyles? All this episode on Sheer Genius shows us is that the judges do not know much about history or hairs styles from the different periods. And the people that supplied them with the period apparel were really way off base, they had not even found left field yet.

This whole episode destroys the judges credibility.

One of the things I appreciate about SG1 (especially after TD1!!) is the approach to judging/judges. I love the fact the judges are not dressed to distract from the process. Indeed, most of the time I barely notice what they are wearing (although I was briefly distracted by Smith's stiff, black-glittery capelet in the current episode). I also appreciate the fact that there is some apparent consistency to the standards they are using to make their decisions.

I read with interest the comments posted in this folder regarding the period hairstyles created not really representing the hairstyles of that period. If anybody has links to info about this, I would appreciate it.

I didn't agree with the decision against Tabatha's punk-era style, and I felt the standard they put on her (it wouldn't appear in Allure, and it needed to be more smooth) to be kind of arbitrary. In my experience of the punk era, her style was dead on. But then that's just a Californian's take on it. Maybe punk was different elsewhere.

I did agree with the decision on Tyson for the win (although worry that it may be the Kiss-O-Death for him). That's why I'd be interested in information about that period's styling from someone who knows more about it than I do.

Also, I question the wisdom of last week's selection for Vanessa Williams' red-carpet style. Looking at it from the back, all I could think of was "An Homage to 'Snakes on a Plane'," and I probably wasn't the only one who thought that, either.

About the drama editing this season...I think Tyson is on a Marcel arc (irritating in the beginning but made to be the victim as the show progressed), and I think Tabatha is on a Betty arc (funny in the beginning, but scary as time goes on). I think her obsessions on certain stylists has to do more with her fear of them as competitors than anything else. And it seems clear: once Tabatha sets her mark on you, you will end up with a gang against you.

Oh, I also thought Dr. B's men's style should have won over Tabatha's. Dr. B's client was intense-YUM to begin with, but with his new style--couldn't take my eyes off of him.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Thank you Swiss (and the others!) because I started to think it was
just me! I've a close friend who does Elizabethan re-enacting. She'd
be cringing over the hair and the dress being called "Elizabethan"!!! What's also odd to me, is that the judges hit the right point on the 60's (I was there, and yeah, that is exactly what was missing) but the other time periods??? Seems to me all they really wanted was Hollywood's version.....wrong wrong wrong. But maybe that is what the sheartestants need to remember....they may claim they want "historical accuracy" but not really have any understanding of it beyond the Hollywood image. Shame shame shame!!!

Of course! On the elizabethan, this is a pretty good link. Notice when you look into it, than most women's hair fashions involved a covering on the head....a caul (snoodlike net) with a hat over it, veiling from the crown to the back, all that good stuff. But I'm not the expert, just a dabbler....have friends who are experts though.

Here is a fairly good source for Georgian clothes and hairstyles which are more in line with what Tyson did and what the model wore.

http://mandry.net/veryan/georgian.html

There is lots on the web about the different style periods that were dealt with should not be had to find more.

I don't know about the Tyson win last night because his design was so off the period he was to present to the judges.

OT for Top Chef Fans:

An article in today's paper says that Ted from Queer Eye will become a member of the Top Chef judging panel for Season 3.

Also, before the next season begins, there will be a charity challenge between Season 1's Harold, Stephen, Tiffany and one other (Lee Anne, I think) against Season 2's Ilan, Sam, Elia, and Marcel. They will then all prepare a feast for the new Season 3 cast. Bravo is billing this special as an "amuse bouche" for Season 3.

They will then all prepare a feast for the new Season 3 cast. Bravo is billing this special as an "amuse bouche" for Season 3.

Sorry, the fourth Season 1 contestant is Dave, not Lee Anne.

I'm just dying to see if Tiffani and Elia mix it up. Can't you just see it?

I was surprised to see the mohowk dyed blue. I know that folks dyed the ends hot pink, white, etc., but I thought the rest was supposed to be black.

Maybe it depends on where you live.....I loved hot pink and lime green, myself.

Remember, Tabatha may not have been supplied with a rainbow of colors!
