Full Version: Episode 108: The "Shear Genius" FINALE!

I liked all three of the final contestants and believe that the right person won considering the rules of the contest. Had this been a "body of work" contest, then the end result would have been very different indeed - and, perhaps, a little too boringly predictable.

I like that these Bravo game shows are based largely on how a contestant does on any given day. It makes them more exciting.

What I really liked about the Finale, though, was that all three of the contestants were such nice people on camera. They didn't seem to have any negative drama going on between them. In fact, Ben seemed genuinely excited for Anthony when he won. Contrast that with the Finales of Top Chef 2 and Top Design.

I don't have a dog in this fight since my favorite was eliminated a couple episodes ago. I really think the judges ranked the three correctly.

I do wish Daisy could have stayed out to partake in the celebration at the end, though. I recognize that it was better drama to leave just two people standing before the commercial break, but I wish they'd let her come back out with flowers for Anthony or something. I'm sure she would have been just as excited for him as Ben was.

Anyhow, after the icey nastiness of Top Design and the juvenile antics of Top Chef 2, it was refreshing to watch a show where the contestants were generally nice to each other - and (despite the fact that it meant the best hairstylist was eliminated) refreshing to see bitchiness and ego get eliminated instead of getting rewarded.

Oh I SOOOOOO agree..Mr. Sassoon made the WHOLE show..... I didn't want it to end.
PLEASE Someone give that man a show!!
I'd never stop watching.

Now that's an example of a class act for sure.....Tabitha needs to watch how he works.
The man is a mega star and couldn't have been more humble.

No one has to go around looking and acting snide all the time .

As far as Anthony winning...Eh..I think he did the least worst.....not the best.
He was my least fave of all of them to win.
Mostly cause he didn't tell Tab to shhhhhhh whenst calling peeps names.....He sort of snickered right along but I still think he's a good all around peep.

Ben and Dasiy have my heart....Ben is a DOLL!!!!
What a good guy.

Oh well...I loved Jaclyn also after all.
Is she really 61?????...OHMG!!!!!!!!
It's almost a miracle!!!!

Rene' I shall miss your cornflower blue eyes and your perfect everything...Swooooooon wub.gif

Aw Kris, I just couldnt resist and took the bait. Bad brillke. Oh well, whats a board without drama, huh?

"Now that's an example of a class act for sure.....Tabitha needs to watch how he works."

I thought Tabatha acted just fine. Since I dont know what went on behind the scenes and others had problems with Tyson too, she did what she felt she needed to do. Remember, Tyson himself said he was manipulative.

You didnt want him to win because he didnt scold someone for doing something they had every right to do? It isnt Anthonys responsibility to babysit anyone. Yet you think hes an all-around good peep but you saw he was in on the Evagalin/Tabatha fight plus he had additude at the reunion? Weird. I liked Anthony alot too and wanted him to win for his hair skills, not baby sitting skills.

Oh well, guess I am alot like Tabatha and I so take that as a compliment. Shes strong, speaks her mind and is well liked and respected in her chosen field.

I can see we are so not ever going to agree. TC3 should be fun, eh?

Oh, Vidal was an awesome judge, loved how he was amazed at what they had done in 3 hours and challenged the other judges to try it and Rene is so f`ing hot.

Aspirin Damage (Alice Cooper)
I get these killer headaches
I get one everyday
I wake up with a migraine
Since you ran away
Got a load of tension
Burnin' up my neck
Something is wrong with my suspension
So pass those tablets to this wreck
Aspirin damage, Aspirin damage
Kills the pain, destroys the brain
No one told me 'bout Aspirin damage
Sometimes I find myself shakin'
From the medication taken
Oh yeah.
I balance my Excedrin
And Anacins in stacks
I'm a pain reliever junkie
I got a Bayer on my back.
I went to see the doctor
He walked me down the hall
Said "Strip down 'til you're naked
Your suit, your tie and all."
Aspirin damage, Aspirin damage
Kills the pain, destroys the brain
Aspirin damage, my disadvantage
Sometimes I find myself shakin'
From the medication taken
Oh yeah.

Anthony won because he did three very impressive precision cuts. The

problem with precision cuts is they are as clear as in person. His cuts

were exact and very close to perfection. I trust Vidal Sassoon. He said

the cuts were good so I believe him. Even when he was saying positive

things about the other two, his comments about Anthony made it

pretty clear that his three styles were excellant. They disagreed on the

blonde to brown. I can see why. Also, the judges had no idea that the

reason the length was not quite short enough is because all three models

didn't wish to go as short as those cuts had to be to as exact as the

judges said they wished the cuts were.

1. No, no relation.

2. Yes, part of clawing includes luck. His rocker look was spot on after near-disaster and Daisy's oily wet-look was total trash.

3. I stressed Ben's past medicority and I have no problem admitting the other stylists' amazing abilities. They were great and would easily have deserved a top-3 spot. That's not the issue.

This is the issue: the finale was supposed to have been judged only on this last event and there no way that was true. Daisy and Anthony underperformed a mile wide or wider while Ben out-performed them and got the shaft. Did previously-cut contestants have more talent? It's very likely. Was it supposed to have any bearing on this last cut? No. This was supposed to be only about the last competition. Ben got robbed and was a gracious, smiling 2nd place.

VERRRYYYY SSSSSLLLLLLOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!! They need to work on that...hint hint!

Their boards have definately dropped off in the way of traffic and they're about to lose the last people they have because of this insane slowness.

I would love to be here more often but don't feel like working hard at it and wasting my time waiting. Especially since the shows have fallen off in the way of entertainment...Shear Genius ended poorly IMO...to go from last week being at a real photo shoot to another episode doing three heads of hair in 3 hours with no real challenge to it...the results were disappointing. They should have done more hair art type of challenges with the short cuts being more skills. Yes, it wouldn't be appealing to all stylists but the ones who do hair styles and weird things for photo shoots, etc...would really be drawn to it and it would be far more entertaining....just my 2 cents...hope everyone who is capable of paging down to read this without falling asleep waiting is having a good day!

ITA!! I keep asking why Anthony didn't pipe in and say "these idiot models wouldn't let me cut there hair short!" I mentioned this earlier; it made no sense for those cows to take on this assignment if they didn't want to lose some length on their hair!! This reminded me of Project Runway and some of the models that didn't want to wear something that was revealing!! "Biatches, find another vocation if you can't deal with the program!" lol!! This happened several times during the season; with Tabatha in particular when the model couldn't decide what she wanted or would allow!!

Ok I though it was just me that was thinking this. If you know it is a competition and you are the model, why would you tell the stylist what to do? The model was not winning the $100,000. Where did they get these gals? Off the street.

I consider it pimping because he doesn't post anything about the show.... 9/9 posts....just ebay stuff. That's pimping to me.

Is it the models fault or is it the producers who got the models not telling them that this is a finalé show and while they have a right to disagree about something radical, that it was going to be a HAIRCUT and if they weren't up for it they shouldn't participate? I blame the production staff but then I've blamed them for...
...the Marcel/Cliff thing getting out of control.
...the Jeffery/Angela's mom thing coming out of confusion and poor management of a challenge.
...awful judges during Top Design.
...the accusations about the "free leeches " against Otto blowing out of control (they had the reciepts and the film footage of Otto asking the question outside of the store).

AND I think they know...
...what happened to Wendy's photo of her daughter.
...the truth about the balance between the 2 differing stories about how the books got back under Keith's bed.
...etc.

Anthony just had to deal with yet another sloppy mistake on the part of the production staff of Bravo's Reality shows...AND he won...good on him!!! wink.gif

DON'T GIVE UP ON THE GUY

Heh, that reminds me of that schlocky old song by Starsky-&-Hutch's David Soul from 1976:

Don't Give Up On Us
(David Soul)

Don't give up on us, Baby
Don't make our love seem light
The future isn't just one night
It's written in the moonlight
And painted on the stars
We can't change ours

Don't give up on us, Baby
We're still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through

I really lost my head last night
You've got a right to start believing
There's still a little love left, even so

Don't give up on us, Baby
Lord knows we've come this far
Can't we stay the way we are?
The angel and the dreamer
Who sometimes play a fool
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through

I really lost my head last night
You've got a right to stop believing
There's still a little love left, even so

Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us, I know
We can still come through

Don't give up on us, Baby
Don't give up on us, Baby

Without even seeing the catwalk showing of the styles, Anthony should have this!! Daisey's was unfinished and Ben's styles were blah!! Let's see what happens!!

You called it! I really thought that Daisy would win, until I saw her final work. I was surprised that Ben was # 2, especially since he squeaked by so many times. From what I saw of SG, this was my favorite of the reality shows. It actually was ABOUT the haircuts, and not who hated whom. With the exception of T & T, who both had a shot if they had controlled their tempers, this was a great show about hair. Now if only the producers of PR could get the hint!

IT'S THE FINALE!

DISCUSS!

OK, so the finale was a bit anticlimactic. I love Vidal, and maybe I am underestimating our geniuses... Did they have to perform the Kwan bob from memory? I think they all did a good job, but I feel like they could have all "kicked it up a notch." So how do we apply to be on. I would love to test my skills against other hairstylists.

LOL WHO'S SYLAR????????? blink.gif

Sylar was(still is?) the villain on the first season of NBC's freshman hit "Heroes." Portrayed by Zachary Quinto (formerly Tori Spelling's hilariously precious BFF on VH-1's So NoTORIous), he's now known for feeding his 9th Wonder "intuitive aptitude" power by opening the brain pans of other "heroes" and somehow absorbing and merging their singular powers into his own.

Some think that Sylar "eats" the brains of his victims in order to absorb the knowledge and power contained. My own POV is that Sylar (formerly watchmaker Gabriel Gray) doesn't need to "ingest" power to absorb it; he has only to observe it long enough to know how it works, and at that level the power has already become his own.

Regardless, "Sylar" is a character who in some way "eats" the brains of others in order to empower himself.

Maybe that's why ...

You look cute!

At least your Mom didn't do the ultimate embarrassment with your shag 'do that my Mom did with mine.

My mother teased the hair on top and made it look like an old(er) lady bee-hive style with the Carole Brady long part hanging down on my neck.

And H%&$ NO! I will NOT post the pic. I'll burn it when I find it again!!

Oh, dear! No, I don't think I ever could've forgiven my mom if she'd done that. I mean, I liked the Brady Bunch back then, but I wanted "Marcia" hair, not "Carol" hair!

Of course, a couple of years later, my mom put me through embarrassment hell too, when she decided to give me a home perm. I ended up with the tightest, kinkiest "white-girl-fro" on the planet, and I was devastated.

C'mon Queenie, aren't you being a little harsh?

How is triguy posting info about SG items up for auction to benefit the Challenged Athletes' Foundation pimping?

Was Vidal Sassoon pimping for New Orleans?

Most boards have rules about advertising ANYTHING. From experience moderating the old ACLU boards on AOL, I can tell you that Amway and other pyramid-scheme people will spam a board to death with that crap. It's very difficult to have a board rule that separates charitable advertising from for-profit advertising, and if someone wanted to file a suit it would not be too difficult to show that most "charitable" advertisements are linked to for-profit, political, and/or religious groups. Some are linked to extremist groups. It would be an unreasonable burden to expect board management to research each charitable foundation who posted to ascertain to what extent they were tainted by any of these groups or special interests.

Besides, Bravo charges (I would imagine) for the advertisers who advertise on their website. It's kinda' hard to convince advertisers they should pay for advertising on a website if they can do it for free on the message boards.

Just my opinion; your mileage may vary.

I don't know that it's been announced whether or not there will be a second SG season, Dangelo. It's probably a little early yet to know. If you keep checking back on the Bravo site, though, I'm sure it'll be announced eventually, as they generally post guidelines when applications for a show's new season will be accepted.

Best of luck to you if and when they do decide!

If Top Design survives, this one should for sure! I think we posted more in the 1st weeks of Sheer Genius!! It could be better with the judging and contestants though!! I was really put off by the "Stepford Wives" perched up on their chairs; looking down on the ones not worthly of their disdain!! What a bunch of self-important twits!! SG was a step above and they should make it ok!! Good luck!!

Just watched the finale again!! I just don't know how anyone could think Ben should have been in this thing at all!! He spent most of his time looking around!! His styles were so incomplete and the judges were reaching by saying his updoo did anything for that poor girl!! What is it with spraying and spraying, section by section, just to pull this girl's hair back?? Pin it and you're done idiot!! lol!! Poor Daisy just tried to do too much and she blew it!! Anthony's styles were classic, smooth, shiney, and most of all complete!! He really was "Sheer Genius!" I still think Tabatha should have been there and she would have won if given a chance!! It was nice that there was genuine happiness and appreciation by all the competitors!!

Anthony never answered the question of whether he was gay or straight on the Reunion show. I know he said he was avail and very single but he didn't answer the other question, lol. I would like to know. He is so handsome and seems so nice.

It's funny that he didn't answer the question because on his audition tape he talks about some guy he was dating, and an adventure he had escaping the house when the guy's boyfriend came home.

The up-do was incomplete, but it was not awful. I've already said as much.

His bob was the best of the three. Daisy butchered hers with that ridiculous wave and Anthony's was barely recognizable as a "Kwan". Ben's cut came the closest to matching the look of the Kwan style.

Bottom 3? Maybe, but he wasn't so it's moot. Lucky? Already been stated by myself in my original post, also moot. The other two fell flat tonight.

The judges said Anthony's was the closest, and that Ben's cut was slightly uneven. They weren't sure if that was an accident. Ben did pretty good work, but that updo killed him.

Anthony had a game plan to give each judge something they liked.

Thanks for posting the lyrics to the David Soul song. I've always loved it. On the flip-side - wasn't he an abusive spouse? Hmmm, if so, that makes the lyrics take on a slightly different meaning for me. I still love the song, and used to love Starsky and Hutch.

Ben was robbed, 100%. Daisy and Anthony are great stylists, and there is no doubt that Ben clawed his way into the top three through sheer determination and a load of luck, but the other two bombed *this competition*. That is what was supposed to be judged. Instead, it is impossible to believe that the judges withheld bias against Ben and his past mediocrity (although he got the shaft again in the hair art and the period-piece compitions).

1. Daisy was way too ambitious and over-reaching for the limits set for the final competition. Even if her equipment/blunders had gone over, she tried to do too much with too little. She easily deserved third for that alone. This in no way negates the amazing talent she otherwise displays. The artifical time limits are my biggest gripe regarding the show: a real stylist hears the request then determines how much time it will take, not the other way around.

2. Anthony created unimpressive looks for each of his models, including a bangs-do that was incredibly unflattering. The judges raved for the one cut with straight bangs, but it made that poor woman's face look bloated. It was a terrible cut for her shape and shame on the judges for saying otherwise. One of the criteria was that each cut stands out from the others, Anthony failed this miserably. Each cut looked too much like the next with absolutely no creative flair. The blonde 80's look was a shame as well.

3. Ben stretched a bit too far and left a up-do unfinished. That's it. His Kwan was great, even if it needed a higher edge in back (just like the others did, just not as much). His "every-woman" cut was subtle genius - a stylish cut nearly any woman could get, afford, and be happy with. All Ben needed to do was tighten up the rear of the -up-do.

So the one stylist with the greatest presentation lost - there's no way these three were judged solely on this final attempt alone. Ben pulled it out while the other two floundered. I guess I should have expected this from the same judges that picked that wreck-of-a-style treasure box in the first week.

edit: Vidal Sassoon was hands-down the most pleasant, enjoyable person on this show all season. Kudos to a guy whose confidence leads to pleasantness and generosity.

you are dead on this 100%.... and i will never watch this show again if it comes out. the final challenge was a horrible unrealistic thing to put them thru. they just should have done one girl and let them do thier signature cut. you do not even get this on top chef or hells kitchen
the final challenges are very real skill based. this change was unreasonable or maybe they did not listen, daisy went to overboard on trying to do the impossible, had she done it safe ,she would have won.
