On topic post here...something rare for these boards...
This men's wear challenge design for Tiki...now that I reflect on it...is one of my favorite challenges. What I really liked about it was that it caught many of them off guard because they are so use to doing women's wear...and they were forced to adapt quickly. The challenge was not only time management but also putting their own spin on an outfit for a celebrity whose style is classic and traditional, and he's in a profession where traditional style is required/expected. Men's wear can be difficult to be innovative in because most men aren't comfortable with color or non-conforming looks.
I must admit I wasn't completely impressed with
Jack in this challenge and don't think he necessarily deserved the win. I do like the shirt and pants he produced...and really do like the stripe and stripe combination and the way he played with the stripe angles on the placket front and pocket. My disappointment with this is in that he is a men's wear designer...so this should have come more easily to him than many of the others. Others without men's wear experience provided more pieces. Although what he accomplished was good...the outfit didn't look complete ...considering the client and that it was to be worn on tv. A tie, vest, something else would have helped/completed the look...even though either of those would have covered the nice details he did with the pocket and placket front. When I saw Tiki on the Today show wearing the outfit...he looked fine in it...but just a bit incomplete. Perhaps Jack's was the best he had to choose from for his own personal style though.
Kevin's, although really very nice, stylish and well executed, unfortunately was too much purple. Too bad too because Kevin specifically questioned Tiki about color and got the response that he liked color and wasn't afraid of pink. His was one of the better and more finished outfits of the competition.
Other's that I thought were top contenders and impressed with, but for one reason or another were probably not appropriate for the client/venue.
Kit... probably my favorite. I really liked the fleece sport coat and the pants were nicely done as well. The coat looked really comfortable and fabric selection was innovative twist for a very classic look. I thought she should have won the competition. She thinks just outside the box...pushing design in a new way, where many of the others just regurgitate looks we've previously seen.
Chris' ... black on black...great for evening wear...not necessarily right for day and/or tv. No lapels on the jacket...I really liked the modern twist of this.
Elisa's...one of my favorites, was perhaps too casual. The pleating of the front of the pants was really interesting and I absolutely loved the vest with the surprise colored lining. The shirt...eh...a bit too form fitting and not into the boat neck...not sure this would be flattering to Tiki's broad neck. Looks like her signature "cuckoo" hand stitching on the collar and cuffs as well. I really like her more and more. Wondering if she spit on this one too, to imbibe it with her...oh whatever...
Steven ...classic and simple. I'm into the polo sweater tucked into the trousers. Tiki may have been concerned with how his booty would look in it...lol. The Ascot was ridiculous...but the outfit needed the splash of color.
Victorya...The model looked great in this. I would have like it more if the jacket were perhaps a beige/camel tone rather than the bright white. The fitted/tapered pants are really nice...flattering on the model. She was trying to bring style and a modern look to this challenge, and I appreciate it.
Jillian...nice 3 piece suite and shirt. Looks well constructed...but one of those "we've seen this look before" reactions from me. I'm actually very impressed she completed all those pieces.
The others...
Carmen...deserved the loss. At the very least she should have considered finishing a shirt and pants first...then the jacket last.
Christian...should have been in the bottom 2 with Carmen. The outfit was not cohesive at all...very mismatched style and color-wise. The asymmetrical collar on the shirt did not compliment the bulky lapels on the sport coat. It looked like poor construction to me. I did not understand the gray flaps on the coat pockets either. He did not design this with Tiki's style in mind either...his ego is getting in his way.
Rami...nice...for a walk in the park or a day out shopping maybe. I'm surprised at how conservative and casual this was.
Sweet P...nice pants...seemed to fit well. She should have been able to sew a sleeve at this stage of her career...basic! I'm surprised.
Ricky...boring! Where's his personality in this design? The fact his was put together with pins wasn't the worst of his design...but he did at least attempt to design with the client in mind.
Enough babbling from me for now...proceed with the bs off topic petty bickering again ...if you must
