WHAT YOU GOT???????? HOPE IT AIN'T THE SUPER FLU

Nope, not that, thank God, but lets just say my insides have massive damage that can't be fixed (they have fixed what they can and taken what they couldn't and what is left is a mess, but works to a degree). The doctors would have me live on a pain pump, but I won't have it and I usually get by pretty well. I periodically have issues that throw everything off and result in a bad week (like this one) and so... sleepless nights (which don't help matters) biggrin.gif But you gotta have a good attitude through it and I find I do pretty well. Everyone has stuff they gotta deal with, its just how you deal with it that matters!

I think there are more out there than you think.. of course on this board and the material that is this boards inspiration will bring out a more liberal population. I don't know what the answer to the healthcare issue is.... my wife is a nurse and I could tell all sorts of stories how the healthcare system gets abused. The one thing I know for sure is that I do not want the government running whatever system is adopted... it is bad enough now but I know it could(and would )get worse. As for the rest of a conservative platform I am not hard core John Birch Society conservative. I am willing to dialogue and listen . I just get my back up when some liberal tells me how to live my life.

I hope this hasn't already been addressed...But IMHO...The second most important thing(After makking a fantastic chocolate ganache[MoHub?])is to take the time(and expence)to find "long stem" strawberries...It just adds that right bit of polish...The restaurant trade gets most of the crop...

OK,got two questions.

First question,I would love to invest in some Le Creuset pans but my budget just will not allow it. I have one small Le Creuset pan and I use it every chance I get but its too small for most things. Rachel Ray has similar type pans at Target and there are a few other knock off type pans on the market. Has anyone tried the knock off brand pans and if so,how would you rate them? To me,if they are only so-so,its not worth my money.

Second question,my niece is getting married in Oct. and my sister who has made cakes for years is wanting to do her daughters cake and even cater the wedding. She is in no way a professional caterer and has a tiny kitchen. She did cater her own wedding to her current hubby,we like this one,and even made her own cake but it was a much smaller affair but it almost drove her insane and she was 30 minutes late to her own wedding! Her daughters wedding will have about 250 people and she,my sister, isnt in the best of health. They have tried several tasting menus and found several caterers they like but the frugal mom in her just cant wrap her mind around paying for caterering when she can cook. I also say that with her only daughter getting married, she should focus on her daughter and leave everything else to professionals. Nothing like a micro-managing mom to piss a caterer off. Any suggestions on how to convince my sister to leave the cooking and cake making to professionals?

Not being able to comment on the latter...I will comment on the former... laugh.gif ...Both Fine Cooking Magazine, and Cooking Illustrated, have given the Lodge, Enemaled Dutch Oven, VERY high marks...Comparable in almost every way with a LeCreuset...At around $40-$50 well worth a look anyway...

Don't mind ya asking, the damage that is done is done, no further damage expected. Prognosis - uncharted waters based on amount of damage. I feel much depends on me - I respect doctors and their opinions, but I am the one who has to walk things out and I am the one who ultimately has to decide what I can live with and what I can't. Doctors want to medicate a lot, I don't choose to live like that. Have been living with it for years now, and really is not so bad - does not stop me from doing what is most important to me. I have a good life and much to be thankful for. I am content.

Hello all,
In Kristy's defense I have to say that a death of someone in your family gives you the right to remember them for a year, for a couple of years, for the rest of your life mind you! And it's a way to mourn that loved one! So mourn away Kristy.

I feel her pain, for I have lost a parent too and has been a few years but it feels like it was yesterday.
I guess you have to experience that if you want to be sensitive of someone's feelings huh? But then again, I have to say that even if you still have your parents bless you, but remember how to pick and choose your words around those of us who have.
Even losing a loved family pet makes you mourn EVERY DAY not just a little while.

So if martyrdom is for Kristy, then let it be. It's her way of showing respect.

We have our moments and our "internet persona" but we also remember how to not hurt someone's feelings.

And in Brillke's defense, I think your criticism of her "martyr" comment is unfounded. Please go back and read this post, paying attention to every word of the original that Brillke was replying to.

If you take a step back, you'll notice that the mention of death in the original was about 1% of what was posted, yet you're making it sound like the response was in direct reply to that 1%.

I don't believe Brillke's "martyr" remark had one whit to do with the death of KK's mother. It had, instead, everything to do with the rest of the post--i.e., the frequent and backhanded barrage of passive-aggressive insults those of us not attending Camp KK this season are subjected to at her every opportunity.

Posts like the one above, and others like this illustrate that. "Pathological Obsession," are you kidding me? It looks rather like someone's mislabeled "Passive Aggression" for "Pathological Obsession" here, because the "obsessed one" doesn't seem to be the responder but the claimant. We're like the "elephant in the room" that no one wants to acknowledge, except in the sketchiest of terms, and it gets downright tiring being unnecessarily made out to be the bad guys all the time. I mean, if we're gonna be the bad guys, at least give us gadgets or cool clothes or something!

In the end, I think what this all boiled down to was the seeming oddness & displacedness of a reply to topchefan's post here where all she did was ask "Does anyone know how to order Top Chef Season One on CD, DVD, or download?"

The resulting reply, here, was a little out of left field, don't you think? Come on, now, in whose "lexicon of normalcy" is there a passage that says it should be common practice that a plea for technological/entertainment assistance on an internet message board (or anywhere, for that matter) should be followed by an abrupt and wholly personal reference to death and emotional upheaval? Not only that, but what on earth did "I think some peeps don't post as they know they would get eaten alive by the big smart bad men. The cretins roam.....man do they roam" have the least little bit to do with tofchefan's post or inquiry? The answer is "nothing," because it was posted as yet another passive-aggressive dig at those who have taken KK to task or called her into question before. If it wasn't, then please prove to me otherwise.

The death of a family member is horrible, whether it be of the human or animal variety, but even amid the chaos of death, there's a delicate latticework of structure underlying it. KK's reply seemed in direct counterpoint to that structure, so there was, as expected, fallout.

Maludi, you have every right to defend KK against the "threats" she sees through her spyglass, but please be sure the threats are real and legitimate before you go defending. By the same token as hers, we have just as much right to defend our own against her. It's sad that she's chosen to make this an "Us Versus Them" mentality, because she does so out of spite, not legitimacy.

Goodness, this reads like an episode of The Tudors!

I have no idea on question one. As for #2, one of the things you could tell her is that, as this is her only daughter's wedding (and hopefully her daughter's only wedding), she - your sister - should leave as much to the professionals as possible so that she might more enjoy the process and the wedding itself - connecting with her daughter instead of the stove. It would be terrible for her to run herself ragged (reminding her how hard she worked on her own, much smaller one) and create alot of bad memories of this wedding. And it would be worse if everything didn't go as planned and she was left blaming herself for it. If she is the type to be critical of her own work, it may not matter how much others rave, she might still end up feeling that it could/should have been better.

Hope that helps and Congrats to your neice!

Yes, and I have another one. What's the best website to go to to find out the definition of cooking terms? Is food.com a good one? There are so many terms I see on TC and don't know the answer. I'm just a country cook and don't understand alot. But I make a mean beans and cornbread. rolleyes.gif

I don't know about web sites but I have a reference book called Food Lover's Companion (Sharon Tyler Herbst - Barron - I think its in the 4th edition now). It is great for basic definitions and there has been very little mentioned on TC that I don't find in it. It sits in my lap like a kitten while I watch the show every week (though I haven't needed it much this season smile.gif ). The book is paperback, has nearly 6,000 definitions, is around 800 pages and costs just under $20.

I have a big, fat Larousse Gastronomique, which is one of my treasures. I probably need an updated version, though, as a bunch of new techniques and accompanying terminology have come into being since my edition came out in 1974.

Heck, my version predates molecular gastronomy and sous-vide!

I understand how you feel. My mother lives in a retirement apartment (not assisted living or a nursing home, despite the Life Alert ads using the terms interchangeably), and the building has a resident doctor whose sole function in life seems to be filling the residents full of pills. My mother doesn't use him, sees her own outside doctor, and is on a minimum of medications, and she's appalled at the mini-pharmacies her friends have.

It's good that you're standing by your choices and doing what feels right for you. The mental boost of being in charge of your own course will in the long run do you more physical good than a boatload of prescriptions.

Thankee sai for that journey River.

My ex Welsh love told me of it and used it all the time. ...I assumed it was Welsh....but it must be something they say or did but not necessarily Welsh.

Here's what I came up with and I love the different ways to say thank you in all the languages too.

It seems Dark Tower comes up a lot when you Google Thankee sai.

He was and is a HUGE Stephen King fan
and writes stories similarly so maybe that's part of the reason he said it too.

Welsh peeps and the language are mystical and lovely and STUBBORN. unsure.gif

The stories he would tell me and how PROUD they are....Sigh ......Some day I go.
Our good friends are now buying a pub there
on a golf course.....Really OLD..and are actually living in a Welsh long house which are
very important there to history.
Sigh again.......I know in my other life I lived in the UK as I have had fascination and love for all things Brit since I was very young.

My grandfather gave me a leather bound set of small Shakespeare books whenst I was in kindergarten and I could read before kindergarten and I love them so and would read them over and over and of course did nowt understand much.

(nowt is from my other Nothern English
luv lol Lancashire is a whole 'nother language.
I swoon to it)

We would have Lanky days where we spoke nothing but Lanky. ....So MUCH fun.

http://www.nyt.co.uk/lankytalk.htm

I WISH I still had those books...I doubt they are here but I can go and check the attic when we move....It would make my heart SING to have them..The things that we and
I have thrown away over the
years with the moves......Oy

Well Thankee sai again!!!

Thankee, Sai

May also find references online to Say Thankee Sai and Thankee Big Big which essentially mean the same -- Thank you.

The phrase "Thankee, Sai" is used by several characters, including Roland, to mean "Thank you, Sir." The dialect appears to be derived from a combination of American mixed with Old World terminology both European and Asian. The quaint dialect highlights the "almost" mirroring between the Dark Tower universe and our world and may also be King's way of demonstrating the unstoppable evolution of human language. The dialect, which mixes old and new terms, is also a reflection of a Dark Tower theme -- that of old things/old ways enduring into the future even if they remain in a broken or dysfunctional way -- or vice versa -- even in evil times, the good in civilization may endure in very small ways. Thus, some people continue to use and MAY be identified by their polite language.

If you shake the berries in a light coating of flour, they should stay suspended in the batter.

My wife has been an RN for 40 years and has seen it all. It just kills her that the neighbor across the street who is perfectly healthy is on medicaid and my wife has had to treat her. The neighbor claims that she has some kind of mental problem that prevents her from working in an office. Then there are the Puerto Ricans who come into the ER flashing their medicaid cards. I could go on and on about the "dirt bags" who come in for every cotton pickin' thing, no matter how minor such as a cold, while tying up the system for those who really need medical attention. It's not the older ones that the wife objects to, but the young, healthy ones, with the manicured finger nails, and with the three or four illegitimate kids, who claim that they can't work because they can't afford a baby sitter.

In summary, there are too many on medicaid who shouldn't be there. These people claim they can't find work or are unable to work. In reality they are just plain lazy but know how to milk the system and we are paying for them.

OH MG this is quite flattering.
You spent THIS much time on moi???

OK here's the way it's gonna' be.

You stay away from me.... All of you
I am not your play thing anymore.
I wrote that in direct response to something Note said and TCFan just happened to answer him.

If you want me to go into the
whole Christmas Eve thing I will ....But some peeps are gonna' look insane and awfully cruel.

It is MY right to answer that any way I deem
and none of your business and none of this
I care for you garbage.....You are all so transparent it's not even funny.

You put me ignore and you do not obsess on me anymore....... All of you.

You keep finding ways to try and goad
me and post to me and make digs.
I make them too.....Of course I do.

I can do anything I want as long as
I do not personally attack you.
.BUT it is up to YOU to control youself and not respond to it.

This is going to be a long season and in case you haven 't noticed you can't make
peeps hate me as much as you will try.

Yeah the david thing and this and many
others...Gee some peeps even PMed my
friends to try and get them to hate me.
I don't play that game.

Shaking my head..I mean REALLY???
As much as your pack has attacked
peeps???? And you all do nothing???
Peeps will like you as you treat them.

You think I'm passive aggrssive????

Have any of YOU ever read
yourselves???

Bottom line..leave me alone and I will do the same to you.

I'm not playing anymore.

I only even knew about this post as someone told me....I don't read you if I can all help it all.
And the ONLY reason I am responding is to TRY and nip this in the bud right now.

If anyone wants to go back and read you peeps they can...They will see a dark history
of this behavior....... Go away!!!!!!

And if you continue to obsess on me
after this then YES... you are pathological as I have told you to go away and leave me alone.

Have a nice life.

KK,

I want to let you and anyone else reading these post and slapping their heads that I in no way wanted to drag past BS up. You made a very strange reply to a very simple question. I commented and expressed concern. We all saw what happened after that. I stand by my every word. I hope everyone else can say the same.

I dont know who David is or why you would bring him up but as for the Christmas Eve BS,feel free to drag out any of my past sins. In fact,I will post that one myself. I doubted your mother passed away. The amount of time you spent on the boards and your even more overboard then usual attention seeking ways made me think it was a sick ploy to have all eyes on you. I never posted my theories on the boards but I did share them in an email and a PM. I later found out several others felt the same way. It got back to KK,a friend had sent a PM to someone he thought was a friend and that person told KK, that some people felt she had made the passing of her mother up and it got very ugly. I dont want to drag anymore BS up but feel free to go back and read for yourselves,if you want to. Theres nothing enjoyable in those post and we all sunk to levels that were pretty low. There are many post you cant read thanks to the BBB deleting them but one thread did get saved and I think you will see just how both sides were involved,it was not one sided.

Im not proud of some of my post but I own what I did. Ive made apologies for things I felt Ive done wrong but I will not apologize for expressing opinions and concern.

I choose to ignore the rest of your post. It will only make things worse and I feel that was its intent. I offered a do over to you but you choose to ignore it. I in no way want to seek out your friendship but I felt we could be more adult like in our stay on these boards but I guess I was wrong.

Please know that any concerns or fears for your safety and sanity will be kept to myself from now on. I wish you no harm, never have, but it would seem my concerns either frighten or enrage you and your friends so lips zipped as we used to say as kids.

My apologies to anyone reading this who was there when it all went down and was forced to witness the ugliness or any n00b who has no idea what went on and is probably pretty confused right now. Ive said what I need to say and Im done.

QUOTE (IronChef @ April 26, 2008 - 07:44 AM) *

Thank you for your post Lia. You always say what I try to say so well but I end up screwing it up,LOL. Im sorry that your post was dismissed so easily but sometimes the truth hurts. Im done with it though and if people want to have breakdowns for all to see,Im not gonna express any concerns anymore.

As for the Tudors,OMG,isnt this season even hotter then the first one?
