Thank you Jazzie and Tula wink.gif .

Although my comment about garlic subs was a little jokesy, it really is hard to imagine what to do in any particular recipe calling for it.

Another point of investigation, not related to food, is the size of his tonsils. Holy Honking Big Walnuts Batman! I'm not one to look down my kids' throats on a regular basis, only if they say they have a sore throat. But these suckers are ginormous.

So, there may be two parts to this issue: mild acid reflux and partial tonsil obstruction (that causes him to swallow repeatedly, swallowing air, causing back-up/burping, etc. yadda, yadda, yadda).

It's a might tricky figuring if the problem is soley food item related or a combo of food and getting it down.

Now, what to do about tomatoes? Well, I already know Spike's answer to tomatoes. *violent rolleyes*

Oy, don't try hiding them under the bread!
Well, speaking from experience (I'm one of those rare people that had a side effect from bariatric surgery, I.....hmmmm.....how to say? I get queasy rather easily and often?)

So.....here's my suggestion, instead of tomatoes, try using v-8 or mater juice. Blend it with plain yogurt, and use that with your shredded chicken for a salad/sandwiches. Till you know what sets him off, maybe stay away from anything with seeds it it. Not because that might be a cause of the problem, but to keep his digestion from being difficult. One thing they told us as bariatric patients, it is harder to digest red meat than white or poultry. It takes more acid, and might be another one of the causes for his acid reflux.

Good luck, I gotta run. My kidlet is getting out of school early today...lucky kidlet....his school sponsored a "pre-finals" beach party. (His school is maybe six blocks or so from the beach, you can see the pier from the parking lot!) And school ends early to boot!

How old is he???? So sorry for all your worry.
My ex had that I think....He would like almost
not be able to breathe sometimes when eating
and it was scary.... Like he was choking.
He said nothing could be done but that was
awhile ago...Have you Googled alternatives for garlic yet????I'm just a button away.
(I love to Google)
As an Italian I would never even dare
to..but for you sure...Garlic is in our baby formula.lol

Thank you again, Jazzie. You've given great suggestions!

I'm in the beginning phases of Google-Mania. Kk, you'd be so proud. biggrin.gif

Kristl, he's 7. Fercryinoutloud. Babies, I can understand because they truly aren't all that physically mature to handle a lot. Young adults/adults I understand. I've pulled my share of all nighter study/paper sessions. I've over indulged in pizza and beer. I get it.

I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how a 7 yo kid who, up until a year ago, ate everything put in front of him without problem. The only thing we noticed was that he was taking almost an hour to eat a small portion of food, then he'd have repeated burping sessions. But hey, burping to a 7 yo is funny, so was it age-related gross out humor or was it a problem eating? Moms automatically go to the "Good Table Manners" lecture.

Annnyvay, who's ready for another. I'm heading for the fridge. wink.gif

Chicken salad! I think so since we have a heat wave going out here. No grapes in the salad, though, I just put the last of our grapes in the dehydrator to make raisins LOL! Besides, my guys like my curried chicken salad, so that's what we shall have here.....maybe with some raw veggies (not mushy cukes or dried up carrots LOL) but sliced roma maters, onions, shrooms and sliced napa cabbage. Ummmm......will pick up pita bread and ummmm! Geez, now I gotta go to the store for stuff! So much for cleaning out the fridge LOL!

My chicken salad: I sous-vide a skinless, boneless chicken breast with some rosemary, thyme, coarse pepper, kosher salt, and either butter or olive oil. It comes out moist and flavorful, and I get a little broth in the bag to use for something else. I slice or cube the chicken and mix with mayo, celery, onion, and sometimes dried cranberries. Very basic, very unpretentious, and very delicious.

If I'm buying ready-made, I've developed a taste for the Cape Cod chicken salad they sell at Costco. But I have to get my share fast before Schmoogie gets it all!

I'm adding you to my list of "Board Members I Wish to Marry".

I make "Thanksgivng" chicken salad with dried cranberries, chopped pecans, celery, Bell's poultry seasoning, onion and mayo. Slap that on some multigrain bread and you have your bird and all the fixin's in hand, so to speak.

Just celery and onions and mayo
(lots)and salt and pepper and a few other herbs.
Dark meat only!

I like my chicken salad with curry. White meat only. Plus, I am the only one who will eat it that way, so more for Tula! Celery, onyon. peeecans, and just a touch of mayo. Got this mayo made with olive oil that is really good too. Maybe the grapes for a regular but not a curry salad.
I put grapes in my pasta salad. That's only way I can get my kids to eat it.

Pita, I am sorry to hear about your little one's problems. I'm going through the same thing... docs can't find anything but something is wrong... go figure. It is so hard for me to adapt and sometimes I just say to hell with it and suffer. I know it's not the same for children... I'm sorry.

Now the tomatoes caused another memory to surface... My brother had horrific reactions to acid. His tongue would break out. They called it Geographical Tongue. It looked just like a map, but not somewhere I would want to visit. To get back on point... he loved tomatoes but they were the biggest offender. Mom discovered yellow tomatoes. They are much, much lower in acid than traditional red tomatoes. It might help your child!

Pita and Parts---food allergies are so hard to figure out. I think I would start with as much fresh, unprocessed food as possible. There are so many preservatives and high fructose corn syrup in many of the foods we use that may be the culprit or contribute to the problem. If you have ruled out dairy products as a problem try yogurt.

I most certainly didn't misattribute the Holberg Suite. Grieg wrote it, but the post I was answering credited it to Elgar. Elgar never wrote anything with the name "Holberg" in it.

I spelled it right, attributed it right, and I'm coming after you now! Be afraid; be very afraid. ph34r.gif

I apologize . . .

When psh mentioned Hollberg and Elgar in the same breath it didn't sound right to me so I googled " 'Elgar' 'Hollberg' " and found both within the same entries several times within the first few choices. Without pursuing it further I replied to psh stating that while I was not familiar with the piece he cited I could understand his observation that Rogers' Victory at Sea reminded him of Elgar and stated my reasons. Then when you made your initial comment I fired from the hip without rechecking my facts. I also mistakenly have always spelled Grieg's suite as "Holmberg" because I identified it with a family of the almost same sounding name I knew as a student in Boston.

I think you and Rady have it nailed on the head. Forget the boxed, canned and bagged stuffs.
I remember Simon talking with me about Mark's curry dish and I had asked why was that so far out there. Because, I had always made me family whatever cuisine in it's original form (where the local grocer's offerings would allow).

Don't get me wrong. We've all had Mickey D's and the like, but when push comes to shove, it's been my homemade cooking with the freshest I can come across. I asked awhile ago (Simon and others) what do Spanish kids, Italian, Greek, Portugese, and Chinese, etc. eat? They eat what their Moms put in front of them. It might have cinnamon, or garlic or onions or lemongrass, or God knows what, but they eat it.

Mickey D's is a luxury, not a staple in their diets.

Now in my World, it's a matter of what fresh and wonderful I put in front of my family that may cause an upset tummy. I'm cool with that actually. Tell me what doesn't work and I'll go from there.

Just to continue the yummy food conversation from earlier....here's an invite to the porch (and don't anyone snark at me for mixing up cultures, I have fun with this, y'know?)

Anyway.....dinner in the Jazzikins household is curried chicken salad with CABBAGE not LETTUCE wrapped in whole grain pita bread, followed by pungent and sweet tropical rice salad. (Read that as, jasmine rice with 1 packet of raw sugar mixed in the water when putting it in the rice cooker, then cool rice in fridge, add in pack of store bought fresh tropical salsa, chop up whatever fruit is leftover in the house....bananas, apples, whatever seems good, & crushed pineapple. Mix with plain yogurt, lime juice, honey, and whatever else seems to work for your family)

Drinks? Of course....iced sweet jasmine tea (and you can put a drop or three of your favorite, ummmmm, adult flavoring in it) and there it is....Jazzie's quick and easy exotic cuisine on the porch cause it's too darned hot to actually COOK anything tonight! (Oh Sam Oh Sam!)

All y'all, enjoy this evening redecoration of the patio, hope you enjoy yourselves tonight! And....all newcomers are more than welcome to my virtual porch, there are only a few rules.....keep the place reasonably neat, no wars please, don't wake a sleeping Jazzie.....and last one out, please turn out the lights?

Namaste

Real bacon in a cast iron skillet so I can save the drippings. Bacon---a food group unto itself!!

.......and how about those pancakes that are already made that you just stick in the microwave? They have all kinds of stuff but there is no way it tastes like homemade.

Hides in corner. Colio loves those things. My boys are not morning people. Always pressed for time as I have to wake them up at least 3 or 4 times. Depend highly on cereal and waffles.
They do get hearty breakfasts on the weekends.

Don't ask me why, but I hate hate hate our cast iron skillet. I bury it in the cabinet every chance I get. Hub always finds the damn thing. Maybe I'll but that up as my wager on the finale.

Hey.....I have one cast iron skillet (minus the handle) that has been in the family for probably our entire twenty+ years together. The cast iron cookware was the hubby's "gift" to me early on.....but the skillet is allt hat is left....and it has become my one and only cornbread pan! The problem I have with the darned thing is my guys...(tall guys LOL)...they put it on the highest shelf possible, then make faces (not Lisa faces LOL) at me when they mention cornbread to me, then I tell them they have to get the skillet down for me before I'll even look to see if I have the scratch ingredients!
rolleyes.gif Your skillet? If you put it up as a wager, I may just take you up on that. I'm thinking about wagering one of my individual teapot sets, you know the ones with the saucer and cup and a mini-pot sitting on top of the cup?
*wink*
Is it nap time yet???

Eeewwww. I like the microwave for popcorn or to reheat coffee.

Sad to say there are lots of folks who don't know homemade taste. Lotsa processed food, fast food, eat in the car or in front of the TV or computer. Maybe if we slowed down and tasted and savored our food we wouldn't have to eat so much.
