Thank you again, Jazzie. You've given great suggestions!

I'm in the beginning phases of Google-Mania. Kk, you'd be so proud. biggrin.gif

Kristl, he's 7. Fercryinoutloud. Babies, I can understand because they truly aren't all that physically mature to handle a lot. Young adults/adults I understand. I've pulled my share of all nighter study/paper sessions. I've over indulged in pizza and beer. I get it.

I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how a 7 yo kid who, up until a year ago, ate everything put in front of him without problem. The only thing we noticed was that he was taking almost an hour to eat a small portion of food, then he'd have repeated burping sessions. But hey, burping to a 7 yo is funny, so was it age-related gross out humor or was it a problem eating? Moms automatically go to the "Good Table Manners" lecture.

Annnyvay, who's ready for another. I'm heading for the fridge. wink.gif

I talked to the doctor this morning when he made his rounds, and he told me that he was releasing Drew today, and he wanted to know if we both understood just how hard this was going to be. Because of his injuries there is very little he can do for himself, so we have to do for him. I told him I was prepared, and I just wanted to get him home, so he was released.

It's just really nice to have him home, and that king size bed now seems like a really good investment. Now, I have to tell you, the two story row house is seeming less wonderful, as ,once we got him to our room upstairs, there will be very little going up and down the stairs. So be it. I can do what needs to be done, and Denny knows that "daddy" comes before he does.

We're ready, and he's home! Hallelujah!

I'm so happy to hear this, Tom! I wanted to tell you that my daughter was T-boned by a construction vehicle several years ago. (We found out later that her car had the lowest of all side-impact ratings of anything on the road.) They had to cut her out of the car (and out of her clothes), and when Schmoogie got the news, he had to call me three times before he could get it out.

Anyway, at the time, she was living on the fourth floor of a walkup garden apartment in Lorton, and her boyfriend and another friend had to drag her, in a wheelchair, up three long flights of outdoor steps.

When you first told me about Drew, I had flashbacks, but I'm happy to say my daughter is just fine now, so I know Drew will be too. And I think helping out with the home care will be a very good thing for Denny.

*sad sigh* I have nothing to contribute to the music discussion. I know how to listen to a radio and that's about the beginning and end of my musical abilities. sad.gif

My son had an endoscopy done this morning and thankfully everything looks good. Medication will only be on an as needed basis and he's allowed to self-regulate what types of food he feels comfortable eating, as there seems to be no one trigger food.

I didn't share too much about it (mostly out of stupid selfish worry). However, in relation to food, I was really struggling with things to make for him. The usual suspects that trigger acid reflux and esophageal problems are tomatoes, citrus, vinegars, onions, garlic and chocolate.
Imagine getting that list of No-No foods!

I didn't know how to cook for the last three weeks. I was afraid the poor kid was doomed to a life of boiled chicken and rice. But now, I can slowly add in an ingredient a week and see what bothers him and what doesn't. If this kid can't eat onions or garlic, I may cry.

In all seriousness, these past few weeks have tested my creative culinary skills. I have a great appreciation for the CTs and coming up with some spectacular dishes, stone cold. I'm on a mission now. I'm going to see how many substitutions I can come up with for my normal meals.

What's a good substitution for garlic? wacko.gif

Hi Pita,
I work with folks with the same problems. Usually, the spices- onion, garlic, vinegar, etc are on the no-no list, but those are not the usual suspects for GERD. Tomatoes, anything caffeinated (chocolate, coffee), minty things, citrus, are the worst ones. Like you said the best thing is to experiment so he knows what's on "His" list. Best thing is to drink a lot of fluids, take your meds, and be sure to elevate head and shoulders approximately 45 degrees when sleeping.

Goodluck.

Elgar can be thoughtful and complex (Enigma Variations) at best and yet sometimes unintentionally pompous in the English Victorian style (a la Pomp 'n' Circumstance Marches). I must admit I'm not familiar with the Hollberg Suite but while the composer was fairly prolific in the English Romantic genre and popular in his lifetime much of his work is underplayed today.

I have always enjoyed Richard Roger's Victory at Sea immensely. That being said, like many contemporary musical comedy and film composers when he tries his hand at "serious" music he often lapses into the British Romantic style rather than forging ahead in a more adventuresome mode. I am not surprised that you should point out similarities between Rogers' and Elgar's work.

Incidentally, I find Elgar's life story fascinating. If you're not familiar with it I recommend it to you.

I'll check it out thanks... smile.gif ...

I was just reading up on the Foie Gras debate. I'm hoping that Top Chef is planning to be fully against the use of Foie Gras, every season, not only when they are filming some place it is illegal.

I just watched a video about the whole process and it is disgusting. Just hearing that a contestant on Top Chef would cook or use this in their food is very disappointing.

Am I being too much of an animal activist. I'm usually not, but its just something I feel strongly about.

I don't know much about foie gras except that it a luxury food. With tens of thousands of people dead or dying in the rubble in China, and wars and genocide, it's not on my mental radar at the moment, but cruelty is always wrong. Cruelty to any living thing degrades us as a society though I think equating animals to people is also a societal ill borne of our suspicion of and isolation from one another. sad.gif

Everything and everyone on this planet is interconnected. I recently watched a show entitled The Human Footprint and it was sobering. It underlined the need we have to live more simply as a species. Like the slogan says.. "Live simply so that others may simply live.." wink.gif

I do not live like a saint, but I adopted a homeless cat and buy organic where possible and shop yardsales and recycle and compost, and donate to charity but I don't impose my views on others. I am a pessimist mostly and don't imagine this has an impact, but I do it so that I can have more peace in myself and feel less of a leech on the world. rolleyes.gif

Sir Supe, Sir PSH doth send greetings; and wishes for health, wealth, and long life...
I art listening unto a verily Great piece of the composers art...The composer in this case is Virgil Thompson,(I'm on a Thompson kick it doth seem)
It's called "The Plow that Broke the Plaines/The River"...Interesting in that both pieces were actually soundtracks to US Government, movies...Really prophaganda(MoHub?)films touting the wonders of FDR's New Deal...More so in the case of "The Plow that Broke the Plaines"...
It's on the NAXOS lable...An ironic lable interestingly at least in this case...It's part of their American Heritage/Classics collection...It(the collection)features such works as Meredith Willsons(think Music Man)Symphony #1...
Uniquely American, works recorded by "obscure" European, Symphonies... blink.gif ...
But I digress...V. Thompson, combined not only unique American, folk tunes in the scores, but also such diverse elements as the Grand Doxology, and the French National Anthem...The score for "The River" is a slow boat ride down the Mississippi...And the damage that man has done(really the "theme" of both films-)...
As I understand it both films were amongst the first attempts of the USG, to communicate it's messege by film...At first Hollywood, refused to distribute "The Plow that Broke the Plaines"...But the People, wanted to see it...Hollywood relented...The River, was less "contentious"(MoHub?)...
Wish I could provide a link...But I'm just too computer stupid to know how to do that...To NAXOS, I mean...
'k enough for now...I'm out...I'll lock up...
G'night/G'day

Agreed! NoTe, this is one of the reasons I enjoy your presence on this board so much. Ever since my son and I started working with food redistribution, we've become more and more aware of "dependent origination" the concept of each and every thing on this planet being inter-related. I'm proud of what we do, what he does. I'm proud that our favorite indi coffee shop gives us the left over frozen scones and muffins to take to the community food pantry. I love that my son follows up with me on it. He, not I, often wants to swing by the community food pantry to check on the bread inventory. He knows that if it is low, I will get on the phone and hunt up donations. Sorry, this is just one of my biggest soapbox issues....like recycling, minimizing how much of an impact we have had on this poor tired planet of ours. Ah well....

Gotta share a kidlet laugh with you on Ironman! We go to ComicCon every summer, and one of the "must do's" is the Paramount preview showings. Not only do we get to see great premiers of movies and TV shows, they give you a bag of souvenir items. amd there's usually four or five T-shirts from the upcoming movies. Last year we got one for the new Star Trek movie as well as for Ironman. This is my cheap and easy way to keep the kidlet in T-shirts, but it had an unexpected result. We haven't had the funds this last month to go to the movies (even the cheaper matinee specials) so Friday he tells me we need to go see Ironman. Turns out, his shirt is getting attention now that the movie is out, but he's put on the spot cause he hasn't seen the movie!

Well, when it makes it to the "$" show, go see it. Wear some ear plugs though. It was so freaking loud, I've been saying huh? all the way home. Funds?!?! $21 to see it and another $12 for popcorn and soda TO SHARE. That is why we only go to the theater once a year. What a racket. ComicCon sounds like a blast and I am envious of the T-shirt.

I should have warned you on the sound....when they did the ComicCon preview, the full-on sound system was set up.....so my ears were ringing with "I AM IRONMAN" worse than they ever did back in the sixties when the song came out!

ComicCon is the greatest! I love it. If you get the Sci-fi channel, they are running a contest with the prize being a trip to Comic-Con (I think for four?)

But the whole thing is such a blast. It's so much more than just the "comic book genre", instead it is actually an entire celebration of pop culture. So I can go listen to author Ray Bradbury (whom I idolize!), we've heard the inimitable Ray Harryhausen of King Kong (original fame) got to see Leonard Nimoy (my personal yummmmm from the sixties!) plus see art, music, comics, costumes, and just have a wonderful time. As soon as the tickets go on sale on line, we get our four-pak. THis way we get the preview night on Wed (we can go, get our passes, then tour the exhibit hall before the ComicCon officially opens) and plan out our next four days. The Paramount presentation is a "wait in line forever" thing, but they put it on in the auditorium that holds....are you ready for this......5,000 people! And, since I am now officially disabled and use a walker at the convention, we get to sit in the disabled section (kidlet is my official attendant) right up front! Wonderful! I have to admit, though the one thing I love doing most at ComicCon is called "cosplaying" that is costuming just for the heck of it. My son and I usually dress up....and we've had people take our picture *grin* just cause we did it well.

For us, we are lucky in that we only live about 35 miles from the convention site, so we just drive back and forth every day. This year, though, with gas prices where they are, we may just take the commuter train and trolley instead.
Yikes....so much for nap time...say good night Jazzie!

Ooooh, lemme tell you. Bake your bacon on cookie tins (with sides, like the half pan baking sheets you can get at restaurant wholesalers). You get flat, crispy bacon AND the drippings.

375 degrees for as long as it takes to make your bacon the way you like it.

AWE, SHUCKS !!!

Thanks for noticing!

I've used Toby Philpott as my avatar on BRAVO for four years. As I've mentioned before the original T.P. is a family heirloom that's now in my possession.

Armchair archeology has always been a fascinating diversion for me and just a couple of days ago the media reported that an ancient bust of Julius Caesar had been discovered in Arles, France, an important trading post in the old Roman Empire. It is thought to have been sculpted during his lifetime and is the oldest surviving record of what he really looked like in middle age. So I decided that it was time Toby had a chance to rest for a while.

All Hail, Julius Caesar !!!

I just read that article recently! I'm a Wannabe Dirt Digger, too. If I had it all to do over, I would have studied archeology. A food antropologist, if you will.

Billy-ray was a preachers son
And when his daddy would visit hed come along
When they gathered round and started talkin
Thats when billy would take me walkin
A-through the back yard wed go walkin
Then hed look into my eyes
Lord knows to my surprise

The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, mmm, yes he was

Being good isnt always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin to me
Hed come and tell me everything is all right
Hed kiss and tell me everything is all right
Can I get away again tonight?

The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, lord knows he was

How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin kisses from me on the sly
Takin time to make time
Tellin me that hes all mine
Learnin from each others knowing
Lookin to see how much weve grown

And the only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh, yes he was
He was the sweet-talking son of a preacher man
I guessed he was the son of a preacher man
Sweet-lovin son of a preacher man
Ahh, move me

Thats my sister and her family, everything she cooks is processed and microwavable. I made gravy one night after frying up pork chops. My nephew watched and was like in a trance. I later asked how he liked supper and he was like "thats the first meal Ive eaten and a microwave didnt go off once." I took it as a huge complament. Once, her microwave broke and she was between paydays so she borrowed our microwave for a few days so they could eat. Crazy, huh? She buys just about everything from Schwans. It drives me nuts.

When I make pancakes,I make a huge batch and freeze them up. They reheat well in the microwave. I do the same with waffles. Heck,I do it with cornbread and corn muffins too.

Your Sister is totally my neighbor. She recently shared her "new" secret. Did you know that if you make more than you need you can put the leftovers in the freezer?

Golly gee willikers. I never new.

OK they say you know they
say that this is the sexiest song ever written.
Cole Porter and I'm thinking maybe... It's not just the words .....it 's the arrangement which is complex....and the beat beat beat drip drip drip.
    Oh LAWDY!!

He meant this to be an overtly sexual song.
But many of the singers of the day didn't give it that...IE Ella Fitzgerald and
Fred & Ginger.....as they couldn't back then or maybe even wouldn't..He was gay and it is to
his lover at the time ...even though he was
    married to a woman.

SO here is an newer version of Frank singing it which is far more resonate and sexy than his original in the 30s which was so innocent comparatively.

Then we have U2. Bono does a riveting rendition and man is he sexing it up and I don't know if any of you have ever seen the Cole Porter
movies or know his story but man what a life he
    had...I'm fascinated by him.

Oh and funny Brit gay off I found along the way...Come on Bear..Do you thank this is the sexiest song ever written?? If not what is????

Please forgive me.....Love songs are what
I want to listen to today rolleyes.gif

    Cole Porter

Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
    When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you

Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon or under the sun
Whether near to me, or far
Its no matter darling where you are
    I think of you

Day and night, night and day, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
    In the roaring traffics boom
In the silence of my lonely room
    I think of you

Day and night, night and day
    Under the hide of me
There's an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me
And this torment wont be through
Until you let me spend my life making love to you

Day and night, night and day

Back in the 90's (Gawd does that make me sound elderly), there was a muscians AIDS benefit that remade all the Cole Porter Standards. For the life of me, I wish I could remember the name of it. Something like "Red, Hot and Blues" or "Rythym, Hot and Blues", something along those lines.

Help me out, those of you with better memories.

Anyway, contemporary musicians/singers remade all the Porter classics.
"Night and Day" was one of those make-you-tingle-all-over songs.

Everyone played this. Aaron Neville, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, etc. Somewhere, I have a cassette (yes, I said cassette) recording of it.

Now you've given me a mission this week. I must find this cassette.

*and stop laughing! I still have equipment that will play cassettes. blush.gif

I used to spend a few hours on the weekend prepping and precooking some things for meals during the week. Brown up ground beef that could be used for chili, spaghetti, sloppy joes, tacos....

Welcome to my World. As of right now, I schedule a full day to shop and chop. I would like the time to dice, pre-sautee'. But it ain't gonna happen some nights. I have all my vegs washed, peeled, chopped, diced, shredded and so forth ready to rock-n-roll. Even meats will be portioned out, cut into chunks, strips, fillets or left, as is, as roasts. Fruit, I leave until time of serving or they turn to mooosh.

Hallelujah!

I'm so happy to read this! I just know that Drew will heal quicker and more positively being in his own environment. God knows, a hospital will make you sick!

All my prayers for renewed health and strength are with Drew, you and Denny. You're a family. You will get through this. All my best to you all. smile.gif

    Hi Pita,
I work with folks with the same problems.

    Goodluck.
    Peg

Thank you, so very much Peg. smile.gif It was so kind and generous of you to answer with your professional opinion.

I only went by the "no no" list. I almost had a blackout thinking he'd be doomed to a life of no onions or garlic. *cries* So far, the kid is back to his regular ways. Read: milk, chicken, sweet potatoes, wheat bread, PB&honey, mashed potatoes, carrots and cereal. We threw in some watermelon and cantaloup just to get crazy this weekend. biggrin.gif

He's about as plain as they come. Another reason I was shocked he was having any problem whatsoever.

Thank you again. Your time and input is very much appreciated. smile.gif

    Yes you do

You do something to me Cole Porter

    I was mighty blue,
    thought my life was through,
    till the heavens opened,
    and I gazed at you.
    Won't you tell me, dear,
    Why, when you appear,
    something happens to me
    and the strangest feeling
    goes through me?
    You do something to me,
    something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live 'neath your spell,
    Do do that voodoo
    that you do so well.
For you do something to me
    that nobody else could do!
    You do something to me,
    something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live 'neath your spell,
    Do do that voodoo
    that you do so well.
For you do something to me
    that nobody else could do!
    Since you came my way
    I am bound to say
    things I once thought gloomy
    now both bright and gay.
    I'm so happy now,
    and I'm sure somehow,
    of this transformation
    there can be but
    one explanation:
    You do something to me,
    something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live 'neath your spell,
    Do do that voodoo

Drew is driving me crazy. Ever since he got home he wants a drink of water. He wants something to eat. He wants me to make the trip upstairs to put on a DVD or a CD for him. He wants my every second's attention, and he wants it three minutes ago, if not sooner. Instant gratification takes too long.

Did I mention that I actually love it. He's such an independant person that being needed is somehow satisfying. I can't decide if this is normal, or somehow deeply ill. Denny says he feels exactly the same way, and that it eerie to hear it put into to words for him.

My prayers are with you and all the "care givers" out there. It's one of the toughest, emotionally draining things you will have to do in life. I moved my ailing stepmother into my house (too many health issues to list) right before my husband had major hip surgery. So I had 2 patients, 2 kids still at home and a full time job.

Psh, in this state we have Area Agency on Aging. I got a tremendous amount of help through them. They provided me with aides that would come in a couple days a week for 4 hours and it was a godsend. They also arranged for regular visits from visiting doctors and nurses (the nurses were the most help). They found resources for medical supplies and medication at little or no cost. They hooked us up with a Lifeline type system that didn't cost us anything. I got so much help from truly wonderful people and it didn't cost me a penny. It may be some work to find these kinds of organizations in your state but it will be worth the effort.

Stay strong my dear. I admire you and all who take on the overwhelming task of caring for ailing, aging parents. If I can think of anything else that might help I will surely pass it along.

    Much love.
