Ok I gotta share this...I'm like cryin' so hard right now...Good tears...My dad and I just had a moment...I was listenin' to the Randall Thompson, Alleluia A-men(if this makes me needy too bad)...My dad came into the room and I said listen to this "This is what I hope to hear when I die"..."Isn't that gorgious(MoHub?)..."...He said "If you like chiors"...then he understood...The way he touched me...
My dad turned me on to Jazz...
I think tonight I just might have introduced him to my "Classical" world...
Not bad for a man, that not only adopted me...But had to endure the death of his first born son, to AIDS...I'm not his biological son...But He's Dad...I know of my Bio. doner(they were married it was 1957 after all)...This is what I mean when I say Job, was an "light weight" compared to my dad...He has never treated me as anything but his "eldest" son...
We were looking at some old pics t'night(from my moms first wedding)and she made the off hand comment that I looked just like my dad(I do really)-and I kind of looked at her for a moment and I said "No I look like Al-this is DAD (pointing to my dad;) Al was just a sperm doner"...Thankfully she understood what I meant...

Then you're saying that I shouldn't mention that I can barely tolerate Elton, and that his "Aida" is one of the longest nights that I've ever spent at the theater, comparable only to "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables". Oh, and maybe, the Rosie O'Donnell "Grease".

I got off the bus at the Yellow Brick Road. You may smack the living hell out of me any time that is convenient for you.

ROTFLMAO!!!! No, I can't blame you for "Aida". I really can't.

psh,

I'm glad you and your father were able to bond and my thoughts are with you with all you have on your plate right now.

Incidentally, I once just missed singing the Thompson Alleluia under the composer's personal supervision. My home church choir invited him to direct a performance of the piece when he was visiting Cleveland a few years before he died. Unfortunately I was in graduate school in Boston at the time and didn't learn about it until I moved back home years later. There are still choir members who remember singing it under him and they continue to share the story with whoever is around to listen.

Another piece you'd appreciate is Grieg's Ave Maris Stella. It was just mentioned on my local station a few minutes ago and I scrambled for a pen and paper to jot it down for you. It's on a disk labeled "A Mother's Love," Decca Catalog #: 001083602 which was just released last week. I can't vouch for the recording because it wasn't played on the program but the piece is a moving one. The high school choir I toured Europe with sang it at Grieg's grave in Trollhagen, Norway and it was one of the high points of our entire trip.

Im so depressed!

Chase, who is 7,is listening to my ipod and he just asked me "why do you got so much sucky music on this thing?" First,I was like "sucky?" Not a word I use and where the heck did he learn it?

I was like what music dont you like and he said these guys and started to show me the cover flow of the songs he disliked.

They included

The Clash
Elvis Costello
Judas Priest
Collective Soul
Deep Purple
Cyndi Lauper
Elvis Presley and a few more. I was stunned! Is there any hope for todays youth?

He then asked why I dont have more cowboy music, what he calls country music,on there. I was able to not shiver and throw up as I said two cowboy songs are enough for me. Im so not a fan of country music.

Cowboy music but no Clash? I think Im gonna go have a cry now....

I would add Kiss, Queen, Styx, Supertramp, (the good older stuff), Wham, Joan Jett, Blondie, and the theme music to Twin Peaks. rolleyes.gif

If you haven't heard the theme music to Twin Peaks, you need to try it. You can find it on the Pure Moods CD (the first one).

Sir Supe;
I noticed your new avatar...Have you read any of Colleen McCullough's "First Man in Rome" series?...Granted it's historical fiction; but the facts are there, and they are accurate...It traces the history of Rome, from the time of Cornellious Sulla, to just before Octavian enters the stage as a major player...They are amongst the three or four books, or collections of books(along with I Claudius, Claudius the God,)that I try to read once a year, or so...Picking them up and re-reading them in a way is like talking to an old friend...

Can't agree with you there. When yodeling is done well and right, it's an amazing art. Jewel yodels, and even Heidi Klum yodels—and does it well.

Have you ever heard Patsy Montana sing "Cowboy's Sweetheart"? That's some mighty fine virtuoso yodeling.

The great thing about an ipod is you practically have to drop it in the garbage disposal to screw it up. You can play with it, and learn new things that it does, and, then, play with it some more.

You can change it from day to day, or, like Drew, you can use it as an aural "snapshot" of the time that you put stuff on it. Drew has ten of the things. He fills them up, and then he moves on to the next one, with very minimal changes.

The only problem is, if you want video, you have to buy it from Apple. That's not a real big problem, though, as they have lots of stuff, and it's all really reasonably priced.

I don't leave my house without my ipod and cell phone. What would be the point?

I don't think I really care that much what Denny likes, right now, as it will change, as his musical "palette" changes, and gets more sophisticated. When I was young you couldn't get me to listen to what my parents listened to, and now stuff like Frank Sinatra and, lots of opera and classical music, are staples of my collection. I just want Denny to be aware of what's around him. He doesn't have to love it now.

The big thing about being young is making your way through. I know one of Phil's kids was really "into" Slipknot. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Alice Cooper did that two generations before, and Joe did finally come to that conclusion on his own. Music is a very personal thing, and, as long as it's there, kids will eventually have that "aha!" moment.

I've got some really eclectic taste myself and loved opera and classical from the time I was tiny. However, it took me decades to realize how much I adored Cole Porter (my Dad's favorite) and Jerome Kern (my all-time favorite popular composer). After all, that was my parents' music.

Nowadays, about the only thing I can't listen to is progressive jazz and real, old-school country music of the whinier variety. And I can still appreciate their qualities even if they aren't my music of choice.

Hiya!!

I was the same way.
I didn't appreciate any of it
till I turned 29 again.
But don't go by me..I even like
Bread and Air Supply biggrin.gif

Well that one song.

But I do know the difference.
Ever hear of Alan Holdsworth???
My ex adored him and he never sold out.
I know the difference.
BUT I LOVE Barry Manilow.lol

Magical

Bread!!!! Egads. I told you the Bread story, didn't I? OMG that is so much worse than having "Dancing Queen" in my head. I saw Air Supply once. That was enough. They're alright. Never heard of Alan Holdsworth. I like Manilow's Swing stuff. It's awesome.
Nooooo tolerance for country music and never acquired the taste for classical. Although, I am convinced, if Mozart were around today he'd be in the same category of genius (in my mind) of Pete Townsend or Roger Waters/David Gilmore. He'd be making some rocking music.
However, I have complete respect for Johnny Cash who has done the most brilliant covers of "I hurt myself today" (Nine Inch Nails) and "Personal Jesus" Dephece Mode.

Life sure is funny to me at Times..... this past Sunday I was in a church at Jenns Grandsons Baptisiam. I was walking out of the church at the end of the service cause I needed a smoke the pastor shook my hand and asked who I was because this was the first time I had been in that church.... I looked at him and said well I guess I am a grandpa by proxy that my girlfriends grandson had been baptized today... he laughed and said sorry with the baptisism and the other things going on he did not put two and two together.
So Monday where am I ? I'm filming in a Strip Club all day for 12 hours.... life to me is funny God's House one day Boob's House the next.... wacko.gif

I love it all pretty much.
Even some country but not on a
regular basis 'cept for Patsy...Patsy is my girl.
It's all based on them...the respective elders.

And I have never really studied
why we are even musical at all but I know it's something lol I did read it a few times but must go and refresh...There is an inherent reason why.
It fascinates me as I have none of it but
I know it is passed down....Mostly.

I was absent the day they passed it around in my genetic pool.

Can't play a note don't know no notes
and sing like a screeching everything.

The only song the mascots will ALLOW me to sing is "Million Dollars" by the Barenaked Ladies. I sing the first part and they sing the second.
PS. Mascot's #2 b-day today. Big 7.

Thanks Rady. I'll show him this post after his b-ball practice. Both mascots help post on this board on show night when we're not too into the show to post.
