Well then that led me to Crosby Still Nash and Young and
Suite Judy Blue Eyes which was written for her by her lover Graham Nash at the time....I think lol Not sure if her lover wasn't Stephen Stills. But anywhooo she was with one of them. Lucky her....I want to be infused by that kind of genius plus Stephen was so HOT!!!

Stephen Stills wrote "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" for Judy Collins when they were breaking up. Graham Nash had a thing with Joni Mitchell and wrote "Our House" when they were together.

I made this post originally on the Project Runway off topic board before I knew there was a Top Chef off topic board, so I'm making it again for those who have left the Runway boards for good.

I saw "The Pirates of Penzance" last night when I got home. I had TIVOed it, because I had never seen the film. It left the theaters too quick and I didn't have the heart to see it after the disasterous reviews the film got.

After reading Frank Rich's rhapsodic review of the new version in 1980 I saw it at Joe Papp's Delecorte theater on a balmy summer night under the stars. It was a wonderful show; Bringing rock singers (Rex Smith, Linda Ronstadt) and Broadway vets (Angela Lansbury, Kevin Kline and the delightful George Rose) together, they mixed the old with the new in exciting new ways.

Though I could see some of the things in the film that I witnessed that lovely night, it was, overall, craptastic, so I have a question.

Why are most of the films made from hit musicals so bad? "The Producers" was lovely on the boards and awful on film. "Rent" was a show that so captured my imagination that I saw it on stage over a dozen times. It helped that you could wait in line for $20.00 seats in the first ten rows but that wasn't all. It was great.

Okay, "Chicago" was great, as was "Dreamgirls"; but most of the time they are like the film of "Evita", a show that wasn't much good on stage, and deplorable on screen. And don't blame Madonna and Antonio as they may have been great in a solid film. Bad musicals have been made into good movies.

Why,just why, can't we do these things now? We used to be able to do them. I just saw the film of "Damn Yankees" and it still holds up. I can't imagine wanting to see most of the modern musicals on film in 20 years. What happened?

I think Grease was good. Phantom of the Opera was good, can't think of any more, but I'm thinking now Grease is over 20.

I get up at 2:30 every morning to get breakfast for my hard working husband who leaves at 3:00. Go to bed real early except for Wednesday. I DVR Top Chef just in case I fall asleep.
On the news this am I saw that we have reached the 4000 mark for killed soldiers in Iraq. Very sombering. Without getting into whether or not we should even be there, I was wondering. How many US soldiers have died since the Iraqi war began that weren't in Iraq or Iraq related. Since most of you have a better command of the Internet than I do, if you know the answer, please post, if not could you direct me to a web ste that may have the answer? I'm sure somebody somewhere has those stats. Just curious. And thanks in advance.

Well, I can take care of classical for you (especially opera!) as well as folk music, as I was a major hippie/folkie in college. I'm also pretty well versed in older popular songs from the 1880s through the 1940s (courtesy of my Grandma Sue and my Mom).

Here's my take on what I will call the "rotten Easter Egg incident".

Part of the mandate for many organized so called Christian Religions is conversion of the heathens. At all costs, every hour of every day. It is not enough that existing members-of-the-fold be frightened into blind submission (read: tithing their dollars). I know that this is not always the case - you know who you are - so please don't feel a need to defend yourselves - we know who you are too and love you for it!

We, the heathens (and members of other more properly minded faiths), must understand this. It WILL not change - EVER. All that we CAN do is stay strong (oddly enough, the phrase "keep the faith" jumps into my head), see their actions for what they are and stand up when they infringe on our own diverse and beautiful belief systems. Run away shouting to the mountian tops for all to hear when necessary (KUDOS to PartsGirl) and know that, if there truly is a higher power, she/he/it deals in love and acceptance not hate and divisiveness. IF we are judged at the end of our days, it will be for what we give to the world and not who recruit from it!

Thank you, bjason. Is my thoughts, as well, you just explain them better. Just because I was raised Southern Baptist doesn't mean I hold their beliefs in high regard. I'm not boycotting Disney and I'm not gonna convert the "wild masses". It's funny how freedoms take a back seat with a zealot. Now, if someone asks me what I believe and wants to know about whatever I will sit and talk but just to answer questions... not beat them about the head and neck with the New Testament until they cry to God for mercy. That's ugly and no faith should be based on fear. "I see those same people from over at the church on Sunday down at the River Club doing everything but praying." and "We're all dirtied up in this. Ain't nobody clean." Eventhough that second quote had nothing to do with religion in its original context it's still a good one for explaining that one is no better than another.

My head is swimming with the stuff that each candidate is saying and I can't make up my mind. There are books, yet, the greatest grandaddy of them all is "The Second Oldest Profession". I don't need to tell you the first oldest do I? Anyway... most libraries, if they have it, won't lend it. It's kept in the archives and armed guards stand over you lest you accidentally remove a page... I read it as it was what got my dad started on good whisky at Kentucky. At that time he made his still out of glass beakers and such from the college of agronomy. Long story short the state boys got hold of it and found out he was making it. They "casually" mentioned to him to NOT sell it or they would jack up the jail and throw him under it. End of rant. Find "The Second Oldest Profession". It's a gold mine of 'shine.

You're welcome. I, too, grew up Southern Baptist! I spent most Sundays from the age of 15 to 18 in the pew pleading to be delivered from the gay demon that possessed me. It never took - I had to leave. I enjoy discussing beliefs (and religion - operative word being "discussing") I could never claim to have the answers. For my part, the more I can engage others on their beliefs, the better I am served shaping my own (and understanding them in the process). I don't want to be spoon-fed a dogma. I want to incorporate ideas. I think that anyone who shoves his/her beliefs AT other people is secretly too afraid to question whether he/she just might be wrong or is too insecure within him/herself to allow that it is OK for different-minded people to share this planet. We all walk on shaky ground. We have a better chance of reaching our destinations if we hold hands through the journey instead of throwing stones at each other along the way. (was that last bit too corny?) The energy we put out should be positive/Do unto others.../walk in peace/shalom - at the core it is all the same thing with different names.

I think Grease was good. Phantom of the Opera was good, can't think of any more, but I'm thinking now Grease is over 20.

I saw "Phantom of the Opera" on stage with Ron, and, though he knew I hated Webber, I think he was hoping, against hope, that I would love it. He had seen it with friends and thought it was wonderful. The only thing I could say was "the chandelier was great". LOL I really had nothing else to offer.

I saw the film with my friend, Jim, and I had fun, because I saw it with him, basically. I then bought the DVD and saw that the only reason I enjoyed it was the company. It's typical Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I saw "Grease" on stage in, I think, 1971. Barry Bostwick was the star, and there was this gangly kid in a supporting role, John Travolta. The first time I liked it. I've seen it numberous times on stage since then, with casts that ranged from Rosie O'Donnell to Jasmine Guy. It's never been as much fun as it was that first time.

And the movie sucked. A lot. A lot.

I know there are theatregoers here so I have a question. I saw the film, "The Full Monty", last night, and there was a wonderful musical, that I saw on stage, that was made of it. Since then it's sort of faded away, but it got great notices, and was a hit. I wonder if anyone here remembers it.

Like I said, it was fantastic, but no one seems to know about it. The same goes for "Little Shop of Horrors". Great stage musical, and actually a terrific film, but the film flopped and no one seems to remember it.

I think if Obama had actually done something of note, anything, I would be more comfortable. I know Hillary will not make it, and I can't vote Republican. Even if I liked McCain, and I don't, I don't think I could pull that lever.

And voting for an Independent is a good idea, but it just takes votes away from a Democrat, and I can't even think of another candidate I would feel good about. My friend, Steve, is Canadian, and he says that he feels sorry for me. Some of the time, so do I. Sad, but true.

Ellen Greene is a wonder, but, like Patti Lupone, she's never had a hit film. They're both tremendous actresses, with big powerful singing voices. I think in Greene's case it's even stranger, because she's played women who had little voices, until it was time to sing. Then this big powerhouse emerges, and you wonder, "where the hell did that come from?"

They are both beautiful, and I keep hoping, but when Lupone didn't get the film of "Evita", I knew she would never be a star. "Evita" still would have been a bad film, and Madonna was as good as someone could be, in that context, but Lupone may have worked more often if she had done the film.

I saw "The Full Monty" on Broadway. I thought it would be a perennial favorite. The audiences loved it, but it never really became a huge hit. That's a shame. The first time I saw it the show was SRO and, then, I saw it a year later and you could buy tickets the same day.

I saw "Little Shop of Horrors" when it was first trying out in D.C., and it was terrific. It was better on Broadway, so I just knew it would last forever. Then I saw the film the first weekend it opened, and it was packed. I heaved a sigh of relief, but that was the only time it did business, and in two weeks it was gone.

You never know. I talk to a lot of young people who say they hate musicals, but they loved MTV. What's up with that? How can you love short form musicals , and hate real musicals. It's just strange to me.

Hell, they avoided "Hedwig"! The only people I knew who saw it were my age, and it was perfect for the youth of the day. <shrugs>

methinks...Other than that and the one with Rupert Holmes which I liked
probaly more so for Lynn Redgrave and him......she ain't no actress.
Well... Bugsy mebbe'..Patti is to die for and Ellen...YES I agree.
I wish they both were around more. Of course that line you wrote made me think of this.......Ever see.... Little Voice....OHMG it is SO good!!!

Michael Caine..I say no more tongue.gif

I saw Madonna in David Mamet's "Speed the Plow", in 1985, and the play revolved around her character. She was great, but I waited to see Frank Rich's review to see if I just liked her, because I liked her, and he thought she was perfect.

It's true that she doesn't have a great range. When she's bad, like she was in "Swept Away", she's cringe worthy, Then again, that was a classic Wertmueller comedy, and didn't need a remake. We have the original. We do.

And she's a terrific comedian. You know what the line is, right? "Life is easy, comedy is hard." I loved her in "A League of Their Own".

I think you meant Rupert Everitt, by the way. Rupert Holmes is a light jazz artist.

Forgot about Speed the Plow.
I am a Mamet freak too and LOVE all gay Rupert's and Rufus's!
Read great reviews of STP.
But as we know she ain't no Cate Blanchette or Vanessa Redgrave!

I also think Sam Shepherd is a great playwright...We saw
a few of his plays at the off off theatuh' in Orlando.
Can't think of the name of my fave but John Malkovich was in the original...GAWD love that man too..............STOP!!!!

OOHHH, I LOVE Little Shop of Horrors! Saw both movies, saw the play OFF-Broadway (I don't believe that it ever made it TO "Broadway", though correct me if I am wrong) in the late 80s w/Ellen Greene and have performed the role of Seymour in a local production. It is too much fun. It will alway be one of my favorites.

I think A. Lloyd-Weber is comletely overrated. He has some catchy tunes but mostly the tunes ONLY are his. And I am NO fan of hs screetchy ex-Sarah Brightman - yeah, yeah nice upper range vocally...

At the young-gay age of 12 I thought I had found Shangri-La in Grease, the movie. A world in which people broke into song and dance for no apparent reason - priceless!! And I was convinced Kenickie was secretly in love with Danny (have been in/worked tech for 3 stage productions of Grease in my day). It will always be nostalgic to me.

The most astounding thing I have ever seen on stage (Broadway and National Tour) is THE LION KING. PERIOD. EOD.

My favorite musical is Big River (Braodway and National Tour). Now there's one for you. wink.gif

Thanks for letting me throw my hat in the "musical" ring!

BTW - love The Full Monty (movie)! Would have loved to see the play. I understand that they played-up the gay relationship AND the audience GOT "the full monty" pay-off.

Did you see "Make me a Supermodel" this past week? Christian was on, and he was fierce. That's not a shock. What was that he made Holly a great dress, and she didn't seem to know it was great.

She's a model, though, and brains are not really required. I have a friend who is a model, and when he does something that is iffy we just say "He's a model. what do you want?"

I do love the gay man, Ronnie, though. Not really my type, but he's gorgeous. I mean, capital G, gorgeous.

I didn't get to see "Big River", though I know the Roger Miller tunes very well, and would have loved to have seen it. I know it won the Tony for Best Musical and Roger Miller passed away before he could write another score. A shame.

It was odd. It was SRO for a long time, and then it was gone. That's the first time that's ever happened to me!

We already have our tickets for "The Lion King" this June, at the Kennedy Center. Drew and I have seen it, and loved it, but Denny hasn't.

I'm not certain that "Little Shop" ever made it to Broadway. I saw it Off Broadway, but it was a wonderful production, and their was talk about moving it.

The history is even more convoluted. The origonal was a weird little film with Jack Nicholson. Then it became a musical, and then the film version of the musical was made.

I thought the film was ok, but, for me, the stage version is more entertaining. Like many movies of films, there is too much of an effort to make it "real", while with a stage version you go into the theatre expecting to suspend belief, and just enjoy. Plus, there are things you can do live that don't translate to film. Typically, (and we did this in our theatre in Texas where I designed the lighting and special effects), in the last scene vines are dropped from the ceiling onto the audience. Hard to do that in a movie theatre and impossible with a dvd or vhs in the home.

Hey, Bear! I saw the original Full Monty but never the stage musical. As for Little Shop, I love all three: the original Roger Corman film, the stage musical, and the musical film. My sister has played Audrey in Maine, and she says there's a company that does nothing but make Audrey IIs for productions of the show.

That's probably who we rented the Audrey IIs from.

You said EXACTLY what I was trying to say but I didnt do it very well. You are even Southern Baptist. My dad was(is) a deacon and we were forced to go to every event the church had. To me,if your being forced to sit still as a kid and being told if you dont some guy in the clouds will smite you,you get pretty scared. I mean, what kid knows WTF smite means? I enjoyed Sunday school classes but even at 5-6 I was like yeah yeah, whatever now gimmee a juice box and the green crayon, this donkey aint gonna color itself. As I got older I chose to believe certain things and others I didnt. If God is real,as I believe, and Im wrong he will judge me but if I do the best that I can I think I will be fine.

I agree that beating people over the head with your beliefs is too much. If they ask,I tell. If they disagree,I respect their views. I also agree faith shouldnt be based on fear. That just makes no sense. I have some friends who could quote the bible front to back and we get into these hours long conversations/debates and I love it. Ive learned more from them then I ever did in church.

One of these models is married to a woman. Fans of Make Me a Supermodel will know which one and remember this scene and others.
I won't irritate my guy by watching stuff like this.

Well done, brillke. I think you stated it just fine!
That has been the evolution of my beliefs, as well.
As a kid I had to endure every social event created from church plays to choir. What sucked was I also went to school with these folks and they were hateful in school and all lovey in church. I know we're not perfect but do they have to be that blatantly two faced? Sheesh. Childhood sucked. I'm glad I'm a free thinking adult, now. So, here are two quips my dad liked to use and you may know them being SB and all.
"We don't meet unless we eat." re: SB's
"Methodists are Baptists who are afraid to get wet." Pops loved saying those... He had a third that dealt with fiths but I can't remember what denomination he used. laugh.gif

The movie was great. I saw it with an audience on a Sunday afternoon that was mostly middleaged couples. Everyone was laughing so hard and continued to laugh as we left the theater. I haven't had a chance to see the musical yet. Music Theatre of Wichita did a production that sold out and was extended, I believe.

One of my fave B-52's collections is 1983's Whammy!, and my fave track is "Legal Tender."

We're in the basement, learning to print
All of it's hot!
10-20-30 million ready to be spent
We're stackin' 'em against the wall
Those gangster presidents
Livin' simple and trying to get by
But honey, prices have shot through the sky
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment
We're in the basement...
10-20-30 million dollars
Ready to be spent
Walk into the bank, try to pass that trash
Teller sees and says "Uh-huh-that's fresh as grass."
See the street pass under your feet
In time to buy the latest model get-away Jeep
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment
We're in the basement
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment

It's funny Note..... The B-52's were not a great group as far as singing talent went. But despite the fact that Fred really shouted than sang and the girls who really were the singers.... it was just a new sound back then and just grabbed something in my soul at the time.

The thrill of hearing their newest album today just brought back all of it to the for front of my soul.

Heck I remember when Fred came out with his solo album and my favorite song on it was "Theres a Monster in my Pants and I've got to let it Dance"..... laugh.gif There was even a claymation video they played on MTV back in the day.

They are just one of those rare groups that meshed and spoke to me.
