Off topic, no duh right?, but: you mentioned you've been on soy milk for a while. How do you feel and do you have regualr blood tests/ feel good?

I ask, because soy messes with my thyroid something terrible. Can't do soy producgts. Imagine my dismay when I was told to lay off the salted edamame. *cries*

For now (and what I've given the Goofy Boy) I've enjoyed Rice Dream rice milk or Pacific hazelnut milk. In cooler temps, I make a mean hazelnut-mocha coffee concoction that satisfies both my sweet and caffeine tooth. Everyday cereal/granola, etc. gets rice milk and none of us taste the difference.

I'm just wondering if you've played around with any other products of milk alternatives and your take on them.

I guess this answered one of my thyroid questions. Thyroid disorder is usually hereditary, so if you have it, you may really want your pediatrician to take a look. I've been drinking soy milk since I was a child and really can't tolerate any milk products (except while I was pregnant, my body was able to tolerate milk, milk shakes, with no problem.) I've never really tried any other milk alternative except Lactaid since soy milk works well with me. I didn't like Lactaid because I perceived a little chemically taste. However, hazelnut milk really sounds good. Hazelnut is one my favorite flavors/ nuts.

I guess my son has the luckier end of this. He could take mother's milk, but not regular formula (I couldn't make enough on my own b/c I got pregnant again and was SIIIIIIIICK). He used a lactose free milk based formula and did fine. I added lactaid to his milk when he got to toddlerhood and he did OK and gradually was able to "wean" him onto regular milk and he does fine. The kid has a weird sense of beverage taste. Milk, juice, and water only - no tea or sodas - and will drink a gallon of milk in one sitting if I let him. Hehasn't had any difficulties with milk since he was about 5.

I wish your son would have such luck, Pita. unsure.gif

I'd just like to say, that I'm very pleased that some new/old folks have ventured into the Off Topic thread.

It's nice to have new "faces" saunter in. Whether you feel that this is your cup o' tea or not after tonight, I'm still glad you "played" around.

Heck, if they let me in, then you all are a shoe in! smile.gif

If you learn anything about me tonight, please know that I don't set out to have a "bad" time at anything.

Pita, ask about thyroid testing. It sounds to me like he maybe having some thyroid problems. Do you have it in your family? Thyroid disorder is usually characterized by huge growth spurts and joint pains. Also research celiac disease which is also caused by thyroid disorder and see if your son's symptoms sounds familiar. Celiac disease and thyroid problems are usually disorders that are easily missed since the symptoms are not so apparent.

You, my dear are a font of knowledge for me. I don't think you know how invaluable you are to me tonight. smile.gif My many thanks.

Curiously enough, he tested negative for Celiac disease, yet *I* have a problem (borderline) with my thyroid. I'm not on any meds. I control it with diet. Nothing thyroid on my husband's side, only esophageal problems, which brought about all the endoscopy testing.

Jiminy Crickets! This kid needs a whole blood work-up! *thanks God if it's only a bloodtest next!*

He's skinny as a rail. I wonder now, if he's not hyperthyroid. I never would have thought of it. *scribbles off more questions for the Ped.

I can't eat seafood because of a food allergy - not pretty!

I am the pickiest eater I know - don't like most green veggies, mushrooms (otherwise known as fungus - and brown turds thanks to this season wink.gif ) and most other veggies that are good for you, and game meats.

The weirdest food I have eaten has to be the "mystery deli meat" that was put in the fresh brochens I got while I lived in Germany. I didn't ask what it was and ate it because on a freshly baked and buttered brochen, it didn't matter!!

LOL! I grew up in the Philippines so I have a long list. Keep your waste basket at the ready 2PP tongue.gif

Blood stew- made of pig's blood, chopped up pig intestine and ears, and spices

shrimp paste- usually used for condiments. Really tiny baby shrimps salted and fermented in sealed jars.

Bopis- spicy dish made out of pork lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys made with tomatoes and chilis

Should i go on? Come to think of it, Filipinos really make use of the whole pig.

I've also had gator tails, but I didn't like it. I just don't like eating reptiles.

I've been "following" you since you first posted and I don't know if what I do will have the same effect since you are battling leukemia, as well.

However, I started a low carb diet some 5 years ago. That's not to say, I'm a strict Carb Nazi, but I do limit my carb intake to around 40 grams a day. Sometimes, I get a little overboard with my alcohol intake, but I try very hard to keep it under 50 grams, even if I'm imbibing.

I also limit my fat intake, which goes against the Atkins way of thinking. I've not kept a gram limit to my fats, but I do use the non-calorie spray or just plain olive oil if I need to fry or sautee. Butter is literally reserved at a "pat" for flavoring at the end (usually on top of some steamed broccoli).

I keep most of my carbs limited to dark, leafy greens, and vegs/fruits on the low-er end of the Glycemic Index. I sneak a higher glycemic fruit or veg in only here or there and it truly becomes a "treat".

I do have whole grains. Whole. Grains. Not molasses listed in the first three ingredients. Whole wheat, whole barley, whole grain of choice, brown rice, but NOT molasses, high fructose corn syrup, enriched, or yaddayaddayadda anything other than WHOLE in the first three ingredients. Crazy, I know.

If you want some low glycemic suggestions, I can send you some links via PM.

So far, as long as I don't ingest soy proteins, I'm good. Lean meat protein, I'm good. Low glycemic fruit/veg, I'm good.

Soy, sugar, "white" stuff, NOT good.

All my levels come back midline, not above or below. Just mid.

I wish you all the best. Sincerely. smile.gif

Jim McKay, the ulitamte voice of sports and the Olympics has passed away .... sad.gif

Everyone remembers his "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." for ABC sports. He loved to call the Belmont Stakes for television in his home state of Maryland and this has got to put a damper on the festivities.

However, I for one, will always remember him for his Olympic coverage. McKay (and D!ck Button in ice skating) is THE voice, the persona of the Olympics.

He will be missed ......... mellow.gif

Hey DC- ites.

Just wondering if you ever heard of Marc Cohen/now Copland????

He was my ex's step father for like 10 years and
I forgot all about him till my G/F reminded me of him. He changed is name to Copland because of Marc Cohn/Cohen (they spell it both ways oy)
walking in Memphis fame.

He was ..well let's just say not the greatest husband or step father but he was and is
a really amazing jazz pianist and very well known in that world.

AND he is the one who taught my ex never sell out much to my chagrin tongue.gif

BUT he did live the in DC area for quite some time.
I'm pretty sure he's in NY now.
He the kind of jazz we can stand to listen to MoHub.

No heebie jeebies.....Where is Bearish???
How dare you leave me????

Here he is when he was still Cohen.

Sincerely. smile.gif

Thank you smile.gif . My doctor never told me I had to follow a strict diet, but in reading I've found out what foods I should be eating more of and what foods I should be avoiding. More organically grown food. I'm sure what you have mentioned would be OK for me. Sugar is really something that should be cut out of my diet. I've done it before and did OK with it for the most part. It seems trying to do it again is much harder than the first time around, but I'm getting there. I have been incorporating more whole grains and vegetables. I've always chosen to eat fresh vegetables over anything of the canned variety so I'm good there. I mostly prefer them raw since I don't like cooked vegetables. I need to get on the fruit train too. I try to shop at whole food stores, but they are pretty much lacking where I live. I don't feel like dragging bags of groceries home with me on the train from Manhattan to Brooklyn. I try to do it one bag at a time. I'll be happy when they open Trader Joe's somewhat closer to where I live lol

I would appreciate anything you could send me via PM. Thanks again smile.gif

I have a rather long rant.....cruise on by if you're not interested.

Spent all weekend feeling like crap...lots of naps. Weather was extremely hot for Michigan in the first part of June. (The week before we were still getting frost warnings at nite.) Anyway 90's+ with the heat index over 100. Sunday at 5:20 the storm blew in---70-80 MPH winds, rain, tornado sirens the whole nine yards. Lost power.

Husband not so good with heat and no TV---not pretty!! Have a small battery run TV, only got one station tho, got a battery run radio, so at least have some access to information. I plugged in the brutally ghetto land line phone (cell phone battery about half charged and I don't have the car charger....I know but I don't really use it that much). I have a gas stove so I can use the cooktop if I manually light the burners.Too freaking hot and windy to even fire up the grill. So, ok, not too bad....other than it's hot as the hubs of hell with more storms coming. There are 170,000 without power and it may not be restored til Wed. nite!!!

We were one of the lucky ones and power was restored about 6 PM last nite. I got a late fee on a bill I couldn't pay online--no internet access. Lost everything in my fridge and freezer.

While I piss and moan, I do know that it could have been a whole lot worse. I am bone weary from the stress, but I am also amazed at the conviences I take for granted everyday...dishwasher, sump pump, garbage disposal, hair dryer, refrigerator, washer and dryer, vacuum cleaner....air conditioner, computer, TV.

smile.gif Sorry about your power outage...that is always the pitts. Do you have a well, also? I know for us that is the worst...not having any water because the well runs off electricity. You say more storms are coming?Hopefully you wont lose power again. We could sure use a little rain down here at the Gulf Coast. When we finally get some it will probably be WAY too much.

Nope no well so we had water....I didn't think we did too badly but husband wants the emergency closet restocked!!! Put tons of batteries on the list. No fun showering by candle light when you have to shave your legs!!

My hope for you is the steady soothing rain only at night.

Bearish I know peeps are sick of these proclamations of adoration.lol
I don't care..Too bad.
BUT I have to say this to you.You were my first friend on this board..And it started out funny as I thought you were being snippy to me and somehow against all odds we just never had a fight or an unkind word. I remember you saying
I love that you get that.

Something about a song or something.
And maybe some peeps think it's because I kiss your arse..Not at ALL I don't kiss arse.
FOR NOBODY!!!!! It's 'cause I just understand you somehow ..And when you call me Gracie I feel
crying and I'm not kidding. It is so endearing to me.I could be Jack Benny's Gracie too lol
She's a ditz but a smart one. I just need to thank you somehow And you know why????Because in your strength I feel safe. Because you know when things are really not right. And that is the only time you ever spoke out. And you don't roll that way
I LOVE that....You are truly your own man as
I am truly my own woman.

It's Stevie Wonder day here...and this is for you.
Not literally....but the yester you and me part..because I do treasure the friends I have made here.

You are so VERY smart and actually VERY wise.
Please forgive you all but I had to get my Bear on!!!!!

Folks.....I'm trying real hard to contain myself here....but

My manuscript was accepted for publication, and I have been formally offered a contract!!!!!

wacko.gif Now I have until August 1st to write the last six chapters. Champagne for all on the porch, tuck me in when I start snoring!!!!

With that kind of deadline, and six chapters to go, well, I'm going to turn the porch over (temporarily, mind you) and ask Tater and 2P's to take charge for awhile.

I feel like a fireworks just went off inside me!!!!
