For you, KK!

Start spreading the news, Im leaving today
I want to be a part of it - new york, new york
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it - new york, new york

I wanna wake up in a city, that doesnt sleep
And find Im king of the hill - top of the heap

These little town blues, are melting away
Ill make a brand new start of it - in old new york
If I can make it there, Ill make it anywhere
Its up to you - new york, new york

New york, new york
I want to wake up in a city, that never sleeps
And find Im a number one top of the list, king of the hill
A number one

These little town blues, are melting away
Im gonna make a brand new start of it - in old new york
And if I can make it there, Im gonna make it anywhere

It up to you - new york new york

KK...Ithink what John and I are trying to tell you is be careful what you ask for because when you get it you may not like it...my family had ties for several years to the Kaiser health network and that is very close to what socialized health care will be like... and I can tell you horror stories about poor treatment and care that cost some people thier lives. Our current system has problems... but the poor do get care and a lot of people do not have coverage by choice ; could it be better yes... but we really need to keep the governnment out of the picture.

And these same people that do not have health care by choice, have cell phones and current fads in clothing and drive great cars. Oh I FORGOT to say ditto ohmy.gif

Ah, I guess with such unhappiness in your family and what with you saying a black guy put a gun to your back so you wouldn't say the pledge of allegience in high school, and that three black guys jumped you, I guess you are firmly set in your attitude.

You say that you've tried to turn in members of your own family for Medicaid/welfare fraud and have been ignored by the authorities?

It's sad...the fracturing of families that used to help their own. So many people have given up and feel hopeless. But things can change. And I guess we all have to start with ourselves and work outward..

Note, I have tried helping everybody in my family. You just don't know. But it was one sided, they do nothing to help themselves. I can't do it all. It was like throwing good money after bad and so I washed my hands of it. Would I let them go hungry or live on the street no. Do I need their drama, no. I am a strong believer in "tuff love". Sometimes people need to get to the bottom to see their way up. and I will support them all I can when THEY try. And I'm serious when I ask, what's wrong with my attitude? Forgot to address fractured families. For years I've been the glue that's tried to keep it together. And you know I'm just tired. Quite a dysfunctional group we are. Someone once told me..You can pick your friends, you can't pick your family. Oh how true.
Please excuse, I'm just having a bad day. Yet another family crisis, and I'm so tired of dealing. Everyone comes to me to "fix it" and I'm out of magic. and I haven't prayed today so I don't think any miracles will be coming my way.

God, I don't know what's wrong with me today. I'd say I was PMSing if I had anything to PMS with. Just got off the phone with my daughter where I was ranting. River where are you? laugh.gif

Geez, Shy.. I never meant to imply it was your job to singlehandedly save your family! I just meant that it seems families in general are fracturing and yours is one of the casualties.. mine another!

I also said that you are set in your attitude, not that it was right or wrong. I was thinking about all those aggressive smilies like the guillotine one...? You ARE stressed. That's why I was talking about retreating a bit and healing yourself from the inside out instead of waiting for a just world... wink.gif

When I get aggravated at peeps, it's usually me projecting my issues onto them.. and they are overburdened with their own stuff and not deserving of me unloading my stuff on top of it!

I can't judge you. I don't want to. I generally disagree with reporting family to authorities unless your back is against the wall.. but that is your business and only you know what's best in the situation. Peace!

Pillows are the most disposable things. You can wash them and dry them in the bright sun, but after a few months they have to go because of dust mites, etc. Never keep pillows more than one year tops! cool.gif

O.K. one more personal thing and I'll drop this. I just found out my druggie niece just stole 50 of my mom's vicadin pills, (which I thought we had hidden very well) and her credit card and tried using it 8 times over the weekend. I told my sister, with whom my mom lives, to call the police. What would you do? Others are invited to chime in.

My sister that mom lives with than the other sister that is in complete denial.

Medicare sucks! I've had nothing but problems over the last 5 years in dealing with them over the last 5 years over my mom and dad's bills. It's what happens when the govt is so big the head doesn't know what the arms are doing. Do I have horror stories, I know I'm not the only one. Health care for the poor is needed and I don't know where you live but we have several hospitals and urgent care facilities around here that accept everyone, whether they can pay or not. I cannot sing the praises enough for University Hosp in Cincy. I became very familiar with that hospital over the last year. Very good indeed. The closest I became with socialize health care was in the military. Granted the care was O.K. but the wait was terrible. and you never knew what doctor you were getting. Maybe if we criminals were getting free health care and "holiday Inn" rooms in prison, we'd have enough money to pay for a good health care program. Oh yea, and free college too. I shoulda told my kids to commit crimes so I didn't have to pay the $15,000/yr each I had to pay for them to go to college. Bread & water and dorm like rooms for the crims. Maybe then so many wouldn't want to go back.

Yes,MediCare does indeed suck. Its a joke of a system and it needs overhauled fast.

My parents have insurance via my dads place of retirement but you have to go on medicare too, thanks to our government. Its done nothing but cause problems.

My niece is 36, has been in prison for drugs and check fraud and has been in and out of rehab so many times, I forget. Her mom, denies she has a problem. so no help there. Last time she got out of jail, I brought her to my house and spent hours of hours talking to her and tried teaching her how to help herself and I really thought she was trying, that is until she took alot of my jewlery and split.. I later found crack in her room when I was cleaning. She is no longer welcome here, but I still try talking with her in a non-judgemental way. which is really hard.

Hi,Shy! I think short of taking your Mom in to live with you and banning your niece from your home....there really is no other option besides calling the police. Even if your niece does not WANT to steal the drugs, she will feel compelled to do so. I have seen INTERVENTION on television enough to know. You must put your Mom's well-being above your niece's.

And btw It doesn't HAVE to be totally free to
all there are so many ways this could be done equitably..Sliding scale and all.We are a lot larger than most countries which support that.
Truth is of course we could afford it.
But will the peeps go for it.Totally free I think not that is a hand out in most peeps
minds.I call it a heart out.We can be judged as a nation on how we treat our infirmed and weak.....Some French guy said that.

You say that you are shutting down @ 9 - I assume AM so you probably won't be reading this until you get settled in your new digs.
I am almost positive that it wasn't me. While I watch Hell's Kitchen and belong to the HK forum I have never tuned in to Nightmares.

People do get treated at hospitals no matter what their financial status and whether they have health insurance or not. My wife sees these people on a daily basis. When asked about it she mentions the Puerto Ricans coming in with their expensive clothing and jewelry while waving their medicaid cards.

Please have a safe trip.

Talk about oil and water, no me and my mother would not mix on a long term basis. She lives with my little sister who provides a good loving christian home for her. Her only mistake was to let my niece (not her daughter) come and visit. I told her not to because of the past,, but she didn't listen cause she is so forgiving. I haven't been since she let my dying dad lay in his own feces for hours until I could get down there and clean it up. QUOTE (shyjanne @ August 6, 2008 - 07:06 AM) *
It's all about the abuse in the system. I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters and 15 assorted nieces and nephews. Here's the stats on my family alone.
1 SIL on SSI since the early 80's. Why? she's depressed. If she wasn't a drunk and mixed Lithium with it. I'd doubt she'd be that depressed. She drives a better car than me.
1 Niece food stamps but yet she pays 1100/mo on a bigger house than mine, has a new car and pays 500/mo for gymnastics for her daughter
1 Niece- so stung out on drugs hasn't worked a day in years-free healthcare and food stamps.
1 Nephew-in jail-for grand theft and drugs-two children getting all the benefits from medicare
1 sister-been getting social security since the sixties because her 1st husband was killed while in the AF. not war related. Yet she was married for 10 years to another man, then divorced and was allowed back on social sec. Free medical if she goes to veterans hosp.
1 great niece-daughter of drug addit niece, get's ss and medical card even tho she has a father and step mom that work.

All these abuses in my family alone. Multiply that by others out there and it's quite a healthy sum. Have I tried turning them into the gov't, yes. Did a get a response, No.

And don't even get me started about illegal immigrants. Free everything. Maybe we should bill Mexico for the costs. or just shootem as they cross the border.

My husband and I have worked very hard to get what we have. and I resent like hell the fact that we'll probably end up with very little cause we'll be taxed, etc. to pay for these people (abusers)
Now I know we all need a little help once in awhile and I applaud those hard working people who are trying to make a life for themselves, but stumble along the way. But for the habitual abusers, I say let them live in there own misary. And I condem the companies that don't offer health ins. for their employees or keep their hours low enough that they are inellgible to qualify for insurance only offered to "full-time" employees.
Well was that long enough of a rant?

Shy,

It sounds like no love lost between you and other family members. I guess I should consider myself lucky in that I get along with all of my relatives, or at least remain on speaking terms with them.

I know where you are coming from with regards to no health insurance for part-timers but that's the way it has always been. When our kids were very young my wife was part-time and depended on my health insurance. She still does as my policy is better than hers - she works for a hospital and even her pension is not commensurate with all the years of backbreaking work she has put in. I took a big cut in my pension so that she will be financially comfortable when I pass. I am 6 years older than her and expect to go first.

Its the way of the world - those who put in an honest day's work and those who spend the day figuring how to get their share without working. Be happy that we belong to the former rather than the latter if that is any consolation.

Oh John, I love them all, I just don't choose to hang with them. My extended family numbers into the 60's, with all the bros and sis, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Actually, me and my little sis are very close. I also enjoy a great relationship with her hubby and family, 2 brothers and their families and yet another older sis and her family. For these people in my life I am truely blessed. The others just have too much drama in their lives and I refuse to be drawn in by them anymore. BTW, I used to be a doormat, maybe I've overcompensated. ohmy.gif

When I became diagnosed with type II diabetes I looked into getting drugs through the Veterans Administration. We have a VA hospital nearby. When I got there I had a difficult time getting a parking space it was so crowded. As you said the waitrooms were filled to capacity. When I finally got to speak with someone in charge I found out that in order to qualify for the medicine that I was then on, I'd have to go through the VA doctors, not the ones that I had been seeing for many years. That was my one and only visit to the VA hospital.

You know John, my dad had that same problem. We found a way to go around the system. My dad would go to his PCP when needed and go to VA hosp with his list of medicines, once/year, see a VA doctor and then refills for his medicine through the VA. After awhile his PCP would just fax the medicines needed to the VA doctor and she would rewrite them, send them to the pharmacy and they would be mailed. It took some time, but we got it down to an art what to do. Also, upon release from a hospital, you can take the release form with meds needed to the pharmacy and they'll waive the usual procedure (because of the discharge papers) and fill the prescriptions. At least this works at the VA hospital in Cincy.

Dental pain makes me grouchy too. Yes, I noticed that you were one of the few to post on the thread that kristlkrost seemed to have sequestered herself on. That was classy and really impressed me; it still does. And KK's tenacity impresses me, and the fact that she stays true to her beliefs with little family or board support.

As to your anger at your neighbor who gets medicaid for a suspect mental problem while cleaning houses under the table, I think the anger should be spread around a bit more. What about the scum lawyers who make profit out of enticing the poor to scam or sue? What about the rich who are happy to pay a cleaning lady under the table? Or the men who father children and live well while the government pays for their kids food and shelter and medical.

Surely there are laws that allow fraud in medicaid to be investigated. If your wife feels so strongly that her client is bilking the government maybe she should complain to medicaid even though her employer probably has a financial interest in keeping clients. Republicans who gripe about welfare queens are seemingly blind to large scale corruption in government contract and defense related industries. And I suspect that for every individual who attempts welfare fraud, there are many more who are not getting the help they deserve. Single elderly women are the poorest people in this country next to children. Many do without medication, food, safe housing because of this attitude that they sometimes believe themselves that it is shameful to ask the government for help. Many of them have raised children alone and have no credit from social security for doing so while the absent fathers are retired comfortably.

Things will never be fair. But there is merit in the trying.

Note,

KK will be KK and I don't think anything that we say will make her change her mind. Her heart is in the right place but is unrealistic in some ways.

As for the neighbor across the street, she is just among the thousands that the wife has seen in her nursing career that have bilked the system. So unless what happens across the street affects us personally, I don't think the wife is going to be turning the neighbor in. She did turn someone in many years ago but nothing to do with healthcare. It seems that this one kid was bullying our son so the wife did a little bit of investigating and found out that the bully was ineligible to attend my son's school. He lived outside our school district but was using his grandmother, who did live in our district, to attend our school.

I can't argue with you on the people who need help and aren't getting it.

Queens N.Y. Couple's $61,600 McCains Donation Raises Questions

by Greg Gordon/ McClatchy NewspapersWASHINGTON — Alice Rocchio is an office manager at the New York headquarters of the Hess Corp., drives a 1993 Chevy Cavalier and lives in an apartment in Queens, N.Y., with her husband, Pasquale, an Amtrak foreman.

Despite what appears to be a middle-class lifestyle, the couple has written $61,600 in checks to John McCain's presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee, most of it within days of McCain's decision to endorse offshore oil drilling.

At a June fundraiser, the Rocchios joined top executives at Hess Corp. — Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Hess, his wife, Susan, his mother, Norma Hess, and six other officials in giving a total of $313,500 to a joint McCain-RNC fundraising committee, Federal Election Commission records show.

The donations, first traced by Campaign Money Watch last week, were part of $1.2 million in oil industry contributions to McCain's Victory '08 Committee, 73 percent coming after McCain reversed his long-held opposition to offshore oil drilling. The non-partisan watchdog group said oil executives and their spouses from Colorado, Mississippi, Louisiana, California, Indiana, New Jersey and Florida also donated.

Hess, among the nation's five biggest oil companies, conducts deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico as well as off the coasts of Europe, Africa and Asia.

The Rocchios donated $4,600 to McCain's campaign in February and another $57,000 at the June fundraiser.

Alice Rocchio, reached at the office, confirmed that she registered her '93 Chevy in February, but said that she "absolutely'' used her own money to make the donations.

Moments later, she asked a reporter: "Are you done with your questions?''

A former FEC official said that it's possible that the Rocchios had the means to make those hefty contributions — their first reported donations to a federal campaign. But the official, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, said that their donations also could trigger a complaint or otherwise catch the eyes of the agency's enforcement staff, tasked to ensure that companies or wealthy individuals don't illegally circumvent contribution limits by using employees or other third parties as "conduits'' for cash.

The staff might wish to determine whether the couple is too "under-employed'' to be making donations that large, the official said.

An agency spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

The McCain campaign had no immediate comment.

Of the $57,000 the Rocchios donated in June, $4,600 went to McCain's general election "compliance committee,'' to pay for campaign lawyers and auditors, and $52,400 went to the RNC, which devotes nearly all of its money to supporting McCain's presidential bid.

I just want to say that both McCain and Obama have received money from private donors except when McCain gets a big chunk of change it is made out to be somehow unethical. So $61,000 was donated by oil millionaire John Hess to be used by the McCain people. I once mentioned that billionaire financier George Soros is Obama's sugar daddy. During the democratic primary Soros donated $60,000 to Obama's campaign and continues to finance him now that Obama is the democrat choice for president. The Democratic Party is pretty much owned by Soros because of his backing of Democrats over the years. If Obama is elected president will he be his own man or Soro's man?

Special Perks for Special Donors - A $250,000 donation will buy you a seat at the Democratic National Convention to be held in Denver:

O.K. one more personal thing and I'll drop this.

Shy...I bet you already know my answer....you turn her butt in and prosecute....the only way many addicts finally get help is through the court system; the theft of the credit card is a major offence and if she does not get help NOW her next crime could involve physical injury.
