KK,

Forbes? Isn't Forbes a democrat? John Kerry is a Forbes on his mother's side. Kerry's middle name is Forbes. As for Forbes being rich, the Forbes family fortune was based on the Chinese Opium trade at the beginning of the 20th century.

As for Obama winning, he didn't win the debate but he didn't have to. All he had to do was not to make any monumental mistake which he didn't. As long as the economy remains in crisis Obama will win the election. Hopefully Obama will quit trying to portray McCain and Bush as Siamese twins. As McCain said tonight, "If you wanted to run against Bush, you should have run against him four years ago."

QUOTE (daverocks @ October 14, 2008 - 09:34 PM) *

as for Palin, I'm angry. I'm downright pissed. I am actually offended that someone would present her to me as a candidate for vp or potential president were something to happen, God forbid. I just don't understand how anyone can support her and feel that McCain has good judgement for choosing her.

</FONT></H3>

Dave,

People keep saying that McCain is ready to drop dead should he win the election. Palin has only been in the national spotlight for 7 weeks yet she more than held her own in the VP debate with Joe the Senator Biden, a veteran of 35 years in the Senate. Why do I say this? Because although she couldn't rattle off a bunch of "facts" like Biden did, at least she didn't screw up anything she did say except for misnaming General McKeirnan as General McClellan. Biden made a total of 14 untrue statements but because he made those statements with such authority, the viewing audience gave him the win because they viewed him as having a grasp on the "facts". Factfinder put the lie to Joe's "facts".

Joe Biden may have the reputation of being a foreign policy expert but I have doubts about how much of an expert he really is. In fact I have doubts as to whether he is smart enough to be president should something happen to Obama.

I'm still trying to figure out why Obama would pick a man who has been in congress longer than McCain - not exactly an agent of Obama's change - Joe Biden IS the establishment.

Joe keeps making those gaffes - according to Joe it is patriotic to pay high taxes. And Joe can't count - he can't count to four.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq-eeWow_WU

I think Joe is proving to be an embarrassment to Obama as a day doesn't go by that he doesn't put his foot in his mouth. Pray that Joe will never have to take over for Obama which in the unlikely event that Obama develops cancer from his cigarette smoking.

Getting back to Palin, I'd match her up with Biden any day. Yes he has the experience but he's been stuck in 2nd gear for 35 years. Palin is a quick study, even some of her opponents acknowledge that. Plus she has Obama's charisma - she's the one who draws the crowds at the rallies, not McCain so much. Considering how far she has come in 7 weeks, I'd give her about a year to get up to speed. In four years she could run for the number one spot.

Factfinder put the lie to Joe's "facts".

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122325448093406451.html

Joe Biden may have the reputation of being a foreign policy expert but I have doubts about how much of an expert he really is. In fact I have doubts as to whether he is smart enough to be president should something happen to Obama.

I'm still trying to figure out why Obama would pick a man who has been in congress longer than McCain - not exactly an agent of Obama's change - Joe Biden IS the establishment.

I don't like her politics, I don't trust her and I don't like the way she is playing dirty. I heard in her run for mayor that she put out rumors that the current mayor, a close friend, was not really even married to his wife to cause a stir. This caused a riff between her and the mayor's wife who were close friends. How ridiculous! And she is doing the same with Obama. Instilling fear in the people she can so easily play on their internal fears and while McCain may have come out and said, no Obama is a decent man, has Paliln? Did she once tell people not to behave that way.

My point in making that statement was that I am INCREDIBLY angry at his choice of VP (and would love to be happy about it, being a woman-but the idea of that particular woman taking either office, oh it gets me hot! b/c I so severly disagree with her politics) but, do I come on daily and demean her and her character? No. It goes to what Shy was saying, it's in my gut, and I don't trust her and I don't think there is much in this world that could convince me to vote for a party with her on the ticket. Which, by the way, I'm not saying you do that.

Biden, yes, I saw the JOBS Is a three letter word thing. Yeah, it was funny, poor guy, he made a mistake. But the fact of the matter is that I prefer his political stances on the issues to Palin's. It's that simple for me. I'd rather have him in the seat working with our friends and neighbors and enemies than Palin. Who could Obama have picked that would make you feel better about his judgement on this?

But what I really want to engage in conversation about is what you think about prominent conservative columnist who are coming out against Palin? Do you think they are sexist or do you think their concerns are valid or invalid and why.

Dave, I am confused as to where you got your information on the mayor of Wasilla. The current mayor, Palin's successor, is Diane Keller, a relative(cousin?) of Palin.

Now whether or not Obama is a "decent man" is a question mark to me and many other voters, primarily because Obama's past is murky and Obama refuses to cooperate when asked about his former association with questionable people. Maybe McCain is taking the high road when he calls Obama a "decent man". And then McCain could be mistakenly fearing that when emphasizing too strongly as to Obama's past associations that he would be called a racist. In any case, Sarah Palin, as the VP candidate, has taken on the traditional role of the attack dog. When asked about Bill Ayers, he says that Ayers is a man who just happens to live in his neighborhood. No mention of starting his political career in Ayers' living room or serving on the same boards with Ayers that included the Woods foundation and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge which Ayers created and Obama chaired.Obama said that he was eight years old when Ayers was doing his bombing - no mention that on 9/11 when interviewed about his violent past Ayers showed he was unrepentent and stated that he didn't do enough bombing.

Hillary, during the primary, was the one who first informed us about Obama's mentor, Reverend Wright of G--D--- America, on 9/11 the chickens came home to roost, the white dominated federal government introduced the AIDS virus to kill black people. Wright was the one who married Barack and Michelle, baptized their children, and Obama because he is running for president, claimed that he was not present in church when Wright made those inflamatory sermons and then he proceeded to disassociate himself from his the good reverend.

True to form Obama denied all ties to ACORN despite as a community organizer, Obama was an ACORN instructor who showed new recruits what was expected of them. This was when ACORN was intimidating banks into granting mortgages to poor Blacks who really couldn't keep up with the payments. Before launching his senatorial career, Obama was the Illinois coordinator for ACORN's voter-registration group, Project Vote. As a lawyer Obama represented ACORN in a voter-registration suit against the state of Illinois. During the primary, Obama's presidential campaign paid ACORN $832,000 to finance get-out-the-vote activities. Obama denies all knowledge of voter fraud and says that his campaign is separate from ACORN.

You may disagree with Palin's politics, and that is your perogative, but Palin remains popular in her home state with a very high approval rating. Palin has political enemies in Alaska who are doing everything they can to sabotage her run for VP. One thing is for sure and that is that she has fired up McCain's campaign which was proving to be very pedestrian before she came on board.

If Obama were not leading in the polls, I would wager that he would be regretting that he chose Biden as his running mate who has proven to be a liability. In fact I would go so far as to say that sometimes he is sorry that he didn't pick Hillary instead of Biden, despite having to take Bubba too.

In summary, I don't think Obama is a terrorist like Ayers or anti-American like Wright. As McCain said, Obama is a family man. However, I think Obama used these past associations as stepping stones to get where he is today.

Dave, I missed something - who is/are the prominent conservative columnist(s) that are anti-Palin? Give me some names.

Again, Obama has also stated that the foundation he was on was chaired or ran or whatever by a close friend of Regan's and other Repubs as well. Are we to question their association with Ayers? Are we to question those people who hired him to teach? The people who allow him to live in their neighborhood? Do you really think that our government would allow someone (Obama I am speaking of here) with shady past engagements to get this far? I don't. And no matter what documents are sealed, I think if 'they' wanted them, 'they' would get their hands on them. Obama has also said that his political career was not 'launched' in Ayers living room as some have said. That it was officially launched at a hotel somewhere. I remember those words coming out of his mouth. And I remember a factcheck stating it wasn't even clear whether Obama was even in attendance at that party.

In his book Ayers does talk a little about regret and also it speaks to the Weathermen's tactics that were set up specifically NOT to kill people. Hmmm, sounds a little like the premise of Fight Club-I wonder if that is were the author got the idea? Anyway-I have also read that Ayers comment after 9/11 about 'not doing more' was not meant to mean, not setting more bombs. He came out and clarified that he meant, doing more to end the war. NOt to mention I bet he was on all kinds of drugs. Now, I'm not defending the man, but enough is enough with this whole thing. It has gotten to the point where people are pretty much saying Obama is outright lying. Everytime I have heard him speak on this topic he has said that he served on this board with this man who is a DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR now and that he has now involvement in his campaign and would not. Why should I doubt that? The man is not underground. Plenty of reputable people have contact with him and his family. GEt in there and stir up that sh*t and make his character look bad. And darn if she ain't good at it!

As for McCain saying Obama is a 'decent man' i half feel sorry for that poor little crazy haired lady. THey knew what she was going to say and I am sure they set it up for McCain to come out and say that b/c they found out very quickly that it was not helping his campaign much and was, well, to be honest, inciting some very inappropriate behavior at rallies.

yeah, 'fired it up' is an EXCELLENT phrase to use there. Fired it up with mob torches! Maybe it was pedestrian, but now you have people who have respected McCain for years who are embarassed of how he is running his campaign and asking, 'Where is the real McCain'. I had mentioned them in an earlier post, just wondering what you guys' opinions about that were.

What was Peggy Noonan, Kathryn Walker (?), David Kelly, Christopher Buckley (not really prominent I know, but well know due to his father) who were the others, I can't remember now. But I know there were a few. Ms. Noonan said she got a great deal of hate mail after her statements/columns one saying that her mother should have aborted her and thrown her in a dumpster! I guess there are some situations in which pro-lifers support abortion.

I guess, I just don't distrust Obama. I don't think most of this stuff is important to his ability to be a good president or not. I like the answers he has given and his stance on the issues. I'm not worried he is going to turn our country into a socialist or communist country. But that is just my opinion.

Using a street term when it comes to the attacks on Obama and Biden; "THEYRE BEGGIN'!" lol!! Making a minor mistake like Biden has is so lame to even bring up! I will never understand these people! Do they want to continue down this rode of societal suicide? Like, how bad does it have to get for them to understand, REPUBLICANS DON'T KNOW WHAT THE F&$K THEY ARE DOING? If they are aware of what is happening and continue to do it, they need jail or a mental hospital to check into! The economy is toast, we're hated worldwide, and our debt is unmentionable; is that a winning strategy to hold onto the highest office in the land (world)? BUSH has really hosed that party!

I think it's great that Palin's politics works for Alaska. It's not for me, that's all. I do appreciate that she is honest about her beliefs, otherwise I might realize just how much we disagree on issues!

I appreciate your saying that b/c it seems there are a lot of people out there who think he IS a shady character. Personally I just feel Palin plays on that angle too much, and well.

In the old US of A, that would have been called 'welfare' checks but in the new system, it's lovingly called 'spreading the wealth around'. Apparently, the socialistic government can decide better than the individual how to spend their hard earned money. Also, many companies who vowed to stay in the US to provide more jobs and create more revenue that would actually help and increase the economy of the US have now moved to countries that do not tax corporations at a rate of 35% to 45%, the second highest in the world.

Why Socialism?
By Albert Einstein

From Monthly Review, New York, May, 1949.
[Re-printed in Ideas and Opinions by Albert Einstein]

Is it advisable for one who is not an expert on economic and social issues to express views on the subject of socialism? I believe for a number of reasons that it is.

Let us first consider the question from the point of view of scientific knowledge. It might appear that there are no essential methodological differences between astronomy and economics: scientists in both fields attempt to discover laws of general acceptability for a circumscribed group of phenomena in order to make the interconnection of these phenomena as clearly understandable as possible. But in reality such methodological differences do exist. The discovery of general laws in the field of economics is made difficult by the circumstance that observed economic phenomena are often affected by many factors which are very hard to evaluate separately. In addition, the experience which has accumulated since the beginning of the so-called civilized period of human history has -- as is well known -- been largely influenced and limited by causes which are by no means exclusively economic in nature. For example, most of the major states of history owed their existence to conquest. The conquering peoples established themselves, legally and economically, as the privileged class of the conquered country. They seized for themselves a monopoly of the land ownership and appointed a priesthood from among their own ranks. The priests, in control of education, made the class division of society into a permanent institution and created a system of values by which the people were thenceforth, to a large extent unconsciously, guided in their social behavior.

But historic tradition is, so to speak, of yesterday; nowhere have we really overcome what Thorstein Veblen called "the predatory phase" of human development. The observable economic facts belong to that phase and even such laws as we can derive from them are not applicable to other phases. Since the real purpose of socialism is precisely to overcome and advance beyond the predatory phase of human development, economic science in its present state can throw little light on the socialist society of the future.

Second, socialism is directed toward a social-ethical end. Science, however, cannot create ends and, even less, instill them in human beings; science, at most, can supply the means by which to attain certain ends. But the ends themselves are conceived by personalities with lofty ethical ideals and -- if these ends are not stillborn, but vital and vigorous -- are adopted and carried forward by those many human beings who, half-unconsciously, determine the slow evolution of society.

For these reasons, we should be on our guard not to overestimate science and scientific methods when it is a question of human problems; and we should not assume that experts are the only ones who have a right to express themselves on questions affecting the organization of society.

Innumerable voices have been asserting for some time now that human society is passing through a crisis, that its stability has been gravely shattered. It is characteristic of such a situation that individuals feel indifferent or even hostile toward the group, small or large, to which they belong. In order to illustrate my meaning, let me record here a personal experience. I recently discussed with an intelligent and well-disposed man the threat of another war, which in my opinion would seriously endanger the existence of mankind, and I remarked that only a supranational organization would offer protection from that danger. Thereupon my visitor, very calmly and coolly, said to me: "Why are you so deeply opposed to the disappearance of the human race?"

I am sure that as little as a century ago no one would have so lightly made a statement of this kind. It is the statement of a man who has striven in vain to attain an equilibrium within himself and has more or less lost hope of succeeding. It is the expression of a painful solitude and isolation from which so many people are suffering in these days. What is the cause? Is there a way out?

It is easy to raise such questions, but difficult to answer them with any degree of assurance. I must try, however, as best I can, although I am very conscious of the fact that our feelings and strivings are often contradictory and obscure and that they cannot be expressed in easy and simple formulas.

Man is, at one and the same time, a solitary being and a social being. As a solitary being, he attempts to protect his own existence and that of those who are closest to him, to satisfy his personal desires, and to develop his innate abilities. As a social being, he seeks to gain the recognition and affection of his fellow human beings, to share in their pleasures, to comfort them in their sorrows, and to improve their conditions of life. Only the existence of these varied, frequently conflicting strivings accounts for the special character of a man, and their specific combination determines the extent to which an individual can achieve an inner equilibrium and can contribute to the well-being of society. It is quite possible that the relative strength of these two drives is, in the main, fixed by inheritance. But the personality that finally emerges is largely formed by the environment in which a man happens to find himself during his development, by the structure of the society in which he grows up, by the tradition of that society, and by its appraisal of particular types of behavior. The abstract concept "society" means to the individual human being the sum total of his direct and indirect relations to his contemporaries and to all the people of earlier generations. The individual is able to think, feel, strive, and work by himself; but he depends so much upon society -- in his physical, intellectual, and emotional existence -- that it is impossible to think of him, or to understand him, outside the framework of society. It is "society" which provides man with food, clothing, a home, the tools of work, language, the forms of thought, and most of the content of thought; his life is made possible through the labor and the accomplishments of the many millions past and present who are all hidden behind the small word "society."

It is evident, therefore, that the dependence of the individual upon society is a fact of nature which cannot be abolished -- just as in the case of ants and bees. However, while the whole life process of ants and bees is fixed down to the smallest detail by rigid, hereditary instincts, the social pattern and interrelationships of human beings are very variable and susceptible to change. Memory, the capacity to make new combinations, the gift of oral communication have made possible developments among human beings which are not dictated by biological necessities. Such developments manifest themselves in traditions, institutions, and organizations; in literature; in scientific and engineering accomplishments; in works of art. This explains how it happens that, in a certain sense, man can influence his life through his own conduct, and that in this process conscious thinking and wanting can play a part.

Man acquires at birth, through heredity, a biological constitution which we must consider fixed and unalterable, including the natural urges which are characteristic of the human species. In addition, during his lifetime, he acquires a cultural constitution which he adopts from society through communication and through many other types of influences. It is this cultural constitution which, with the passage of time, is subject to change and which determines to a very large extent the relationship between the individual and society Modern anthropology has taught us, through comparative investigation of so-called primitive cultures, that the social behavior of human beings may differ greatly, depending upon prevailing cultural patterns and the types of organization which predominate in society. It is on this that those who are striving to improve the lot of man may ground their hopes: human beings are not condemned, because of their biological constitution, to annihilate each other or to be at the mercy of a cruel, self-inflicted fate.

If we ask ourselves how the structure of society and the cultural attitude of man should be changed in order to make human life as satisfying as possible, we should constantly be conscious of the fact that there are certain conditions which we are unable to modify. As mentioned before, the biological nature of man is, for all practical purposes, not subject to change. Furthermore, technological and demographic developments of the last few centuries have created conditions which are here to stay. In relatively densely settled populations with the goods which are indispensable to their continued existence, an extreme division of labor and a highly centralized productive apparatus are absolutely necessary. The time -- which, looking back, seems so idyllic -- is gone forever when individuals or relatively small groups could be completely self-sufficient. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that mankind constitutes even now a planetary community of production and consumption.

I have now reached the point where I may indicate briefly what to me constitutes the essence of the crisis of our time. It concerns the relationship of the individual to society. The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence. Moreover, his position in society is such that the egotistical drives of his make-up are constantly being accentuated, while his social drives, which are by nature weaker, progressively deteriorate. All human beings, whatever their position in society, are suffering from this process of deterioration. Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple, and unsophisticated enjoyment of life. Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society.

The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. We see before us a huge community of producers the members of which are unceasingly striving to deprive each other of the fruits of their collective labor -- not by force, but on the whole in faithful compliance with legally established rules. In this respect, it is important to realize that the means of production -- that is to say, the entire productive capacity that is needed for producing consumer goods as well as additional capital goods -- may legally be, and for the most part are, the private property of individuals.

For the sake of simplicity, in the discussion that follows I shall call "workers" all those who do not share in the ownership of the means of production -- although this does not quite correspond to the customary use of the term. The owner of the means of production is in a position to purchase the labor power of the worker. By using the means of production, the worker produces new goods which become the property of the capitalist. The essential point about this process is the relation between what the worker produces and what he is paid, both measured in terms of real value. In so far as the labor contract is "free," what the worker receives is determined not by the real value of the goods he produces, but by his minimum needs and by the capitalists' requirements for labor power in relation to the number of workers competing for jobs. It is important to understand that even in theory the payment of the worker is not determined by the value of his product.

Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands, partly because of competition among the capitalists, and partly because technological development and the increasing division of labor encourage the formation of larger units of production at the expense of the smaller ones. The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature. The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights.

The situation prevailing in an economy based on the private ownership of capital is thus characterized main principles: first, means of production (capital) are privately owned and the owners dispose of them as they see fit; second, the labor contract is free. Of course, there is no such thing as a pure capitalist society in this sense. In particular, it should be noted that the workers, through long and bitter political struggles, have succeeded in securing a somewhat improved form of the "free labor contract" for certain categories of workers. But taken as a whole, the present-day economy does not differ much from "pure" capitalism.

Production is carried on for profit, not for use. There is no provision that all those able and willing to work will always be in a position to find employment; an "army of unemployed" almost always exists. The worker is constantly in fear of losing his job. Since unemployed and poorly paid workers do not provide a profitable market, the production of consumers' goods is restricted, and great hardship is the consequence. Technological progress frequently results in more unemployment rather than in an easing of the burden of work for all. The profit motive, in conjunction with competition among capitalists, is responsible for an instability in the accumulation and utilization of capital which leads to increasingly severe depressions. Unlimited competition leads to a huge waste of labor, and to that crippling of the social consciousness of individuals which I mentioned before.

This crippling of individuals I consider the worst evil of capitalism. Our whole educational system suffers from this evil. An exaggerated competitive attitude is inculcated into the student, who is trained to worship acquisitive success as a preparation for his future career.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow-men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to remember that a planned economy is not yet socialism. A planned economy as such may be accompanied by the complete enslavement of the individual. The achievement of socialism requires the solution of some extremely difficult socio-political problems: how is it possible, in view of the far-reaching centralization of political and economic power, to prevent bureaucracy from becoming all-powerful and overweening? How can the rights of the individual be protected and therewith a democratic counterweight to the power of bureaucracy be assured

Woud you mind elaborating on what some of the countries you would move to are?

I can completely understand. I could live with McCain if I had to, I always said that until Palin came into the picture. I don't like his ideas, but while I can still find work and feed myself, I'd probably stay here. But, if for any reason Palin were to ascend to the presidency, I'm out! I'd probably go back to Japan, maybe to Canada, got a lot of friends there, our socialist neighbors wink.gif or perhaps Australia.

http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/3/22/15723/1610

Of course despite knowing Ayers lurid past, Obama supporters merely shrug it off with Ayers merely an acquaintance of Obama.

I'll repeat it again "You are known by the company you keep" - in Obama's case it might be a case of extremely poor judgement. I think Obama's judgement will come into question if he becomes our next president.

My point was, did Annenberg know who Ayers was? Did the people who brought him into the University to teach the young people of America know who he was? Did whatever court who allowed him to take in the child of one of his fellow weathermen who is in jail and raise him know who he was? did the people who sold him his house and I'm sure did an extensive check on him know who he was? Should all of these people be fired and not trusted? Should people now shun them since we do know of Ayers? I'm not talking about the wider audience of American people who didn't know of this 'connection' or 'acquiantance'. Now we do, does that connection or acquaintance make us feel that he'd make a poor president? No. That, put simply is why we shrug it off. To many of us, it just is not relevant. Even if they do share some ideas about education. apparently whatever he has been teaching for all these years hasn't be so radical that the University has seen fit to get rid of him. I think it is our responsibility to question/challenge our goverment to ensure that we DON"T end up in any situation where we are 'silenced' and can't speak our mind. If the U. of Nebraska had him scheduled for a speaking engagement and didn't know of his past (the one he wrote about in his book) well they are just idiots. They probably cancelled it b/c of the bad publicity, not b/c they don't think he would be a valuable speaker.

I find it funny that Q was talking about some socialst/communist country spring up after Obama is elected and all of us being sorry we did it to ourselves. But, you know, when this whole wire tapping and patriot act thing came up in Bush's presidency, you know, all I could think was, here we are, being led by our fear to put practices in place that we believe are for our safety, but down the road, this could turn into a 1984 like situation where the government can see and hear every move we make in our homes to ensure that we are staying in step-that we are not in any way questioning what we are being taught. I don't fear that from Obama. I don't think that having the rich pay higher taxes than the poor is going to lead to that. I don't at all see how his connection to Ayers would create an atmosphere like that, so I'm confused as to what kind of society it is that people are afraid Obama's presidency who lead us toward?

I also resent the fact that someone mentioned earlier about lower income families getting money from higher income familes who worked 'hard' for that money and the government deciding how to distribute it not being fair. We were below the poverty line almost my entire childhood and not b/c my mom was lazy or had a sense of 'entitlement' or expected any help from anyone. She worked hard, fingers to the bone, sometimes multiple jobs to try to make ends meet in this consumer driven captitalist environment we so adore. And she usually made minimum wage. Personally, i think people who help the elderly as caregivers, nurses, teachers, CNA's who help people bath and wipe their asses for goodness sake SHOULD make more than they do. A lot more. It's all topsy turvey. Someone who uses a computer all day long makes more than someone who baths your elderly parent and whipes their ass so you don't have to? but some how in this environment we have sports stars, actors and celebrities, CEOs and investment bankers making obscene amounts of money. How much do you think they are going to give to those in poverty in our nation of their own volition? IF they would, then they'd take a few million less a year in profit (Especially here talking about CEO's and such) and instead raise the wages for their workers. but now, they spend as little as possible to make as much as possible. That is disgraceful and shows a level a greed that I cannot condone. I'd love to trust people who make that much money to do the right thing, but they don't. Plus, taxes are necessary, as much as we all hate them. They are. There are things that we have to have in a government and the people of the country have to help pay for those things. That's just a fact. And it is patriotic in a sense in my opinion to do so. Yes, taxes may not always be spent on the right thing, and that is problem, but they are necessary to run a country. It only makes sense to me that the more you make in this country, the more you pitch in the pot. I don't think there is anything unpatiriotic about that. You don't want to pay more, share the wealth yourself, pay your employees a better wage so they can live well instead of creating such an imbalance that the middle class is rapidly disappearing and throwing ourselves into debt to try and convince ourselves that we are all right and living a 'good life', then the government won't have to set your mistakes right and you won't have to worry about trying to lobby them for giant tax cuts for yourself while continuing to still the little guy. just my 200 bucks wink.gif

and just to clarify, when I say 'you' i'm not speaking to the reader of this post but to all the 'joe million dollars a year or more' out there. wink.gif
