I like DVD for very obvious reasons. It's all about the info for me. You get various behind the scenes features, including the director's commentary tracks. You can learn about the creative process and I like that.

Also, the print is always good.

What do you think of the 18 year old? Janelle? It was surprising to me that the youngest dancer won the first challenge. James and Cody also impressed me.

Jessica ran off the stage in a panic. She should have been the first to go, but was not on the elimination team. Adrianna, the Massachusetts girl was the first to leave. I thought it might be Oscar when the judges told him to "butch it up". I felt for him as I am also relatively short and could not compete with Cody's "extension" that the judges lauded. But scowling will not get Oscar anywhere, he should break out of his comfort zone of ballet and work on more modern moves. I think his heavy accent and shirtless bop at the club saved him. Nicole had to leave because of injury, so now there are only 10 dancers!

The show is already much more exciting than Top Chef!

James is a dynamo like Janelle. I want to see him dance solo.

I did watch the video I linked on to (thanks amorous brat) and I thought it was fun and tongue in cheek and very tastefully done. That Samwell sure is beautiful which is necessary for that kind of flaunting. wink.gif

So far I really like Cody and Nick. I want to see a lot more of Nick, in fact. I think he's graceful while presenting a masculine sensibility. It's a nice combination.

Personally, I can't wait for Miguel's last dance. He's far too light in his loafers for me. He dances like you would think Prince would dance, just by looking at him. Of course when you actually see Prince move it's another thing entirely. He's a mack daddy.

I wasn't home last night to catch this. So, how does it differ from So You Think You Can Dance? I really liked that show and worship Nigel Lythgoe.

I've never seen "So You Think You Can Dance", so I really have no basis for comparison, which is odd since I think a man who can move well is a complete turn on. I know that the fact that Jason Alexander is such a great dancer makes him sexy to me. It's strange, but true.

It was wonderfully fascinating...for those of us who do not know what it is like to try to dance professionally. WOW! I was impresssed! Not easy to become a Top Chef..or a Top Model... or a Top Designer....or a Top Fashion Designer...or a Top Hair Stylist...

Sigh...I will never be a top anything. That is the way it is.

I do have a depraved heterosexual past. My son, Dennis, was the result, and I don't regret it. I wouldn't have Denny in my present, if I didn't have his grandmother in my past. Denny is great, and I love him so much, that I can't imagine things any differently.

I was shocked that Holly beat Ronnie out on "Supermodel", but I liken it to the Oscars, when two or more people are nominated for the same thing. The votes get spread out between the nominees and nobody wins. This time it was amongst the sexes, but it's the same idea.

I've been seeing the same ads over and over for the next episode of TC, and I'm apprehensive about the episode. If it's really as vile as it looks, then I am out of here. There have been times when I've questioned this show, but when it escalates to screaming, then what's the next step? I don't know if I want to follow it and see.

Maybe you know who they are???

Could your violinist be Joel Berman? I know his second wife was an artist. I used to sing with his daughter Ariana, a very good soprano but with lots of personal issues and self-esteem problems because she couldn't play like her father or paint like her stepmother. Her emotional issues did a lot to get in the way of her vocal technique, and she used to choke and run out of air a lot. She'd also been through a short, very unhappy marriage. She's a little younger than I—maybe in her late 40s now.

Anyway, Joel was huge locally and also taught at the University of Maryland. Do you think that may be whom you're thinking of? Afraid I don't know the wife's name.

I hope this is where we are discussing the whole "vinyl, vs cd" thing...I refered to a "new" cd lable first I was wrong; it's an established label(BMG)...But I was right in that it was (re)releasing the "definitive" recordings of the 50's and 60's...BMG, has re-released much of the old RCA "Living Stereo" series...ADD...I noticed the hiss, and a few pops...But after reading SB's thoughts I'm not so sure...I'm listening to the Ravel, Daphnis, and Chloe"...Recorded in '55...Charles Munch, conducting...
I lost all my vinyl, years ago(already posted)...So I have no way of really testing...
The only music I know for sure that I have owned in all stages of my life is Wendy/Walter Carlos's "Sonic Seasonings"...Vinyl, in college...A cassette copy of a friends vinyl, many years later(ah the nostalgia of ones youth)...And now?...A cd(downloaded to my pc)...My fave...The downloaded version...I feel it probably comes closest to what Wendy/Walter, envisioned...(segue)
Much in the same way, as I feel Tomita, when he interepets a piece in many ways may have heard what the original composer heard in their own mind...Wagner, and Tomita, seem to have a special affinity...
I guess I said that all to say this...Yeah I miss my college days "blastin'" "Floyds" "Dark Side of the Moon" from the dorm window by day...And listening to Wendy/Walter, at night...Both vinyl at first...
But I also love my cd's...They make me feel young...And at least "slightly" hip...I am such a...um um-ok I really need to get a life...

OHMG

Maybe 'cause my ex lived in Dave's real mother's house in SS on... oyy... I'll find the old addy.
I think I told you of it once..Big beautiful pine trees right near that Toll House Inn....A daughter with emotional problems lived there too upstairs and used to drive him nuts... Well anyone
did..lol.....I think that's the one.
How strange......Every Christmas he would go there and tell me of the parties and all the esteemed peeps in the orchestra world that would be there.

I wonder if I can Google his wife cards???
Going.
His son is a real loser....How could such a brilliant man produce two such messed up kids????

OHMG ....YES.... it is Dave Berman.
It didn't hit me at first till I went back to look.
I just realized the last name....What a creep.
I don't care who knows it..... A creep.

What a tiny world we live in! The only member of the family I knew personally was Ariana, and that was only for a short time. Knew she had a brother but never met him.

Anyway, Ariana is the only member of the family I had any contact with, and she was very, very squirrelly and needy. I felt for her but found it very uncomfortable to be around her.

OK to bJ and Bernadette.

Mandy and Bernadette...What a combo.
I love the whole story behind it to and it makes me cry every time.

Sunday In The Park With George

Sob

I think we were meant to be you and I wub.gif

I must have watched this about a hundred times on PBS......I adore her and worship the ground she does not walk on also.....She's unique unto herself like a Babs and a Bette.

I've seen just about everything she has ever done
and I have read enough to know he does have a
heart of gold.

I'm just now remembering something with all this musical talk......When I was 18 after high school had a crush thing going with Oscar Hammerstein's grandson Eric.

He lived high up on the mountain...Clausland Mountain which ran through my town and the surrounding area and we would cross it to get to Nyack which is where I met him...And he took me to the the family house once ..A great big gawjus Victorian.

I saw all kinds of amazing STUFF everywhere.
It was the first time I had ever seen eclectic intelligent mess as I call it....My own house was SO different and neat and curtains matching.
You know.
There were ceiling to floor books cases everywhere filled with books hundreds of books and artifacts from travel and the actual piano he worked at and sheet music of HIS and instruments and a gigantic fireplace.

I wasn't THAT impressed as
I was just 18.......but I was for my parents...I am more impressed NOW
lol

But what a thing to see......I should look him
up..He was kind nerdy and had a soft blond pale blondish fro and he was cute and sweet!!!!

OHMG...... I just Googled him and I never have before...There is not one story on him but all kinds of music stuff comes up that he conducted.

It must be him.....I'm gonna' write to him...lol
We really liked each other...It was magical
really.. I don't remember how it ended.... Maybe he had to go home or something..Maybe he was visitng I do not remember....PLUS there is a picture of kid...under Andrew Hammerstein that kinda' looks like him but it will not let me copy only
download.

PLUS this led me back to a lot of old stuff about Hammerstein himself... What a tawdry past...Thanks you all for making me remember this!!

Mandy Patinkin - SWOON!! I agree, you and I WERE meant to be! smile.gif

What a great Hammerstein story. That is really incredible!

Well I guess we have established that they are one and the same..How strange that you know this lady that I listened to stories about for so long.

He was up there for a year and half before we ended it.
He complained of her all the time.

But he complained of everyone so I wasn't sure if he was delusional.

It will be three years this month that he left and when he left I thought I would die....partly.
Partly I was relieved.

I felt responsible for him as he loved me like
no other...for the first 7 years lol
He couldn't help his problems...He had an abysmal childhood.

I never tried stop fixing him as I never quit.
He ended up resenting me for that.
Now in retospect ....it was a God send.
BUT I still miss the good times every now and again as there were some really great times.

And I miss the music very much.
Oh well...... we live and learn.

Never again!!!!

I would like to snag on hear regarding this audio discussion. I have read much about the vinyl vs. cd issue... what the difference is appears to be analog vs digital recording. The analog imparts the"feel" and "warmth" of the artists performance while digital gives the listener all of the data hence the gererally crisper and brighter sound. That is why most audophiles prefer vinyl recordings (when they can get them) of classical and jazz but cd seems to be better for rock and pop. There are even programs for computers that will re-work digital recordings to make them sound "analog" so that cd's end up sounding like vinyl. I have both vinyl and cd's... one of my biggest regrets in life is that I sold a large part of my vinyl collection off shortly after I married. I do not play my records often but it is nice to listen to when I do.

That Samwell sure is beautiful which is necessary for that kind of flaunting. wink.gif

'k I think it was on this board we discussed the Faure, requiem...And I think it was KSBear that suggested that I listen to the "Cantique de Jean Racine"...I'm answering phones for my local public radio station(It's fund drive week for most public radio stations-if you listen to public radio[often the only source for on air classical music]please consider pledging...Hell even $5. matters)in the am, and the producer is going to play it on air for me...

SO . . .

How didja like the Cantique I recommended to ya?

He's one polarizing sum'[expletive deleted], that's for sure. I think the thing that grates a lot of people is the fact that he's been able to make the American dream work for himself while bashing many aspects of America. But, as he and others would probably say, you don't have to accept the faults of America to love America. And really, you don't have to love Moore (or even his veiwpoint) to see that he hits the mark often (to me, when he goes door to door in Canada to find unlocked door after unlocked door just across the river from Detroit, he strikes a painful truth about our own country).

I say!!!!!!

BUT we have become afraid to speak out
We have..and it's about time someone did.
I feel the same about McKean on some levels.
I applaud Mr Moore.

I want my taxes to go for other things.
It doesn't bother me that they feed peeps with my money.....It does bother me that it goes for a war I don't believe in and massive overexpenditures and crazy tax breaks for the rich and Congeress and Senate have ourtrageous retirement plans and
expense accounts.

Private planes?? Limos.....Really??
America love it or leave or it????
Well they let them leave us...All the umbrella taxes for companies to go elsewhere for cheap labor.
YES capitalism can be evil ..it can be just like all isms but it was a good theory and was born in England to diffuse the burdens of the King.

But we have raped it....like we do many things.

They say that 10 companies rule the world and
they are run by straight white males....uh huh!!!!

Health care for all no matter the cost.
Bring our jobs back so peeps can make a decent living..... Take care of our infirmed and helpless. Work hard and share the wealth.....It can be done.......It can.....Every company should be owned by the peeps I believe
Then we would produce like crazy.... I was in the UAW..I know what unions are capable of pro and con and how slow we were told to work by the union.

I agree that Jessica should be eliminated next! Who would want to be partners with a dancer who runs off the stage in the middle of a performance. The frustrating part is that she is a strong dancer who is held back by her insecurities. When she was pushed back on stage she did rebound well. Another dancer who should go is Oscar. He was not the dancer the judges told to "butch up" as I mistakenly posted earlier, but he deserved the same comment. Also he does not take criticism well; he was shown haughty and scowling at the judges if the editing is fair. Janelle and James and Cody are my three faves so far, but it's early.

And how fun was it to have Scary Spice guest judge! We had Posh Spice guest judge on Project Runway and do an excellent job; I think Scary chose just as well! The Spice Girls are perfect to skate to.. Tell me what you want, what you Really Really want... ha! The blonde, Janelle, even looks like the next generation of Spice Girl.. a beautiful girl with serious physical and mental muscle and talent and a true love of dance! She is the best female dancer by far! But some male dancers have more formal training and experience so it will be a tough contest for her. I see Janelle in the final three.. cool.gif

I like this scenario. So when Village TC gets out of control and the angry villagers swarm about with pitchforks and torches, we have a sharpshooter in the Belltower! Just don't shoot into the trees, where I'll be hiding with my water balloons stashed in my makeshift talan. Lia and MH won't mind because they are in bikini's now anyway, on their way to the tropics to celebrate Lia's birthday..

I haven't read that. I did read "Thank You for Smoking" which was great. The guy who wrote it, Christopher Buckley writes some great stuff, political satire. the White House Mess, No Way to Treat a First Lady, Little Green Men. I mean laugh out loud funny. The movie was okay, but there was so much they missed from the book. I was especially looking forward to the kidnapper having the accent of Peter Lorre saying NEEEEK.

Hey, guys! It's no longer necessary to reply to an existing post if you want to say something totally fresh. Just scroll to the bottom of the screen and hit the Add Reply button, and you will be presented with a lovely blank space in which to write your missive.

The Boardmeisters installed this function around PR4 time, when the entire Message Board was redesigned.

I have not read it either but I did get the screen play and have read it.. it is based on a true story and Steven Russel ( Jim Carrey) is still in prison in Texas still to this day. Looks like a great love story but in a Black Comedy sort of way... the screen play was written by the guys who did " Bad Santa" and they are directing as well.... should be fun.

Why don't you ask the radio station the source of their recording if you liked it? To tell the truth the only internet audio examples I could find were inferior to a professional recording. Some widespread mistakes I noted might color your judgment.

1. The entire work should flow as a gentle stream, never rushed or declamatory. If my college choir director were still alive he'd liken it to a rubber band that can be stretched and contracted slowly, with purpose. There's only one climax and it should be a subtle one -- just a small hill to be climbed and its summit is rooted in intensity not necessarily volume.

2. Although originally scored for keyboard, either piano or organ, there are some good orchestral accompaniment arrangements that capture the composer's intent. It's your choice.

3. It's only a short piece, 6 minutes and a few seconds long. Very often commercial recordings include it with the Requiem or another Faure opus or two.

GOOD LUCK!

So where is this universal healthcare smackdown?

sorry, I kept it on the other thread wink.gif though not so much a smackdown on my part. I just think there is a lot of misinformation out there about universal health care, or more appropriately termed, single payor healthcare. lot's of fear based on propaganda to keep insurance companies making lots of money. I know it isn't perfect, nothing is, but is it better than our current system? I think probably.

See I don't mind the insurence companies. They want to make money which means IMO that they will try anc screw people intentionally here and there but also try to give you the best they can becaus they want to keep your business. You govenmentalize this and the only thing the goverment will try to do is to break even. No free market forcing them to innovate and change. No reason for them to do the absolute minimum.
