OK..
Excellent showing by Janelle. smile.gif I can't get over that she is only 18! And her second win gives her immunity again. happy.gif It might be the editing but that judge Nancy O'Meara is getting on my nerves. dry.gif

I was really worried for Mochi (Michelle) this episode.. She tried so damn hard; she is such a spirited competitor. biggrin.gif I am sure she will make a comeback! I am ready for Oscar to go next. He annoys me more than Miguel. Miguel dancing and not trash talking is riveting to watch.. Oscar is too rote, like Tovah. sad.gif

Am so glad we are getting a few new posters each episode, but we need more! If anyone is thinking of registering just to cheer on their faves.. do it! tongue.gif
I registered in 2004 for the Bravo show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, moved on to Project Runway, and this season I am sampling Top Chef and Step It Up and Dance, and this show has the potential to explode!
It's art, it's sport, it's drama.. what's not to love? wub.gif

When I first saw this show being advertised, I was so very pumped up to see it. However, I am finding that my overall enjoyment of the program is waning. I was expecting to see a variety of types of dancing, but what I am finding on the show, is that it appears to be more like - auditioning for music videos or rock concerts - To me there is so much more to dancing than what I am seeing here. I would like to see an integration of a variety of dancing styles... more than street dancing, club dancing and music video styles. I would like to see guest judges who are articulate and can indicate specific technical, aesthetic, athletic skills each dancer has/lacks when analyzing the contestants besides a personal opinion. The way this show seems to be going, even some of the greatest dancers the world has ever seen: Fred Estair and Ginger Rodgers, Michael Barishnikov and others... would never stand a chance on this show. I would like to see Janelle do the Samba! or ballroom dance with a partner, where the partner leads.

If the intent of the show was to feature just street/club dance, then maybe the show name should be different...
The contestants on the show are obviously very talented individuals! How about we see how versitile they are to a variety of types of dance!

Hoping to see more variety soon!

I'm chilling with the Stomp episode now, and Nick has the funniest line so far: "Just the one beat. It's a battle in and of itself!"

This competition makes people cry, but I agree with the judges' call. And when Tovah says that she's learned a lot about the wide world of dancing, I believe her. This show has certainly opened up my own eyes to how hard any professional dancer has to work, and (more importantly) how open they have to be to feedback and criticism.

(On an unrelated note, I remember watching Stomp back in the 90s here in Boston, and I was dazzled. I understood that what they were doing was technical, but tonight's episode revealed some of the machinery behind the performance. It was great!)

I'm watching the "Stomp" challenge, and I want to slap Miguel upside the head. The guy is a complete egomaniac, and his obsessive ranting about Michael seems to indicate he's completely threatened by him. I don't recall Michael saying anything negative about either James or Miguel, or anyone else for that matter. I think on attitude alone, Miguel needs to be eliminated, and quickly.

After tonights Stomp episode. I agree with Teddi that posted and comment on the judges blog . He said that the judges looked at Cody as there Golden Child. Well I never looked at it that way until tonight when he was sent to the Winning Group. I think Nick should have been in the group. I dont think the give him the credit he should be getting. Miguel needs to get off of Michael. My favorite is Nick!!!

EPISODE 4 - STOMP RHYTHM EPISODE:
~ Although the archaic dance method of stomp was used, (on the same road as the Blue Band method), it was logically used to assess & test the ability of critical dance timing, besides the principle that if you have fun dancing, it's easier to win.
~ Miguel, the obvious closet-or-not Latin drag queen, feels he was the best in this method, probably from experience with huge orthopedic pump heel shoes. Although I feel he considers Michael, insignificant, irrelevent, and/or a threat, for uncloseted reasons, he still won the stomp rhythm challenge. (All that heavy trodding worked off). LOL
~ WHAT was that about "a white-boy moment" that one of the female judges mentions about Cody??? Totally unnecessary prejudice, must of been a stuck-on-stupid moment for her. (Wasn't
~ Janelle, with her self-imposed "white-girl" image, has immunity this week, and although most in the elimination team initially heaved & danced like they had magnetic space shoes, they still came together when they worked as a team, however Tovah weighed herself down with her own self-doubts about dancing stomp rhythm, which is why she got eliminated. Gotta remember that if you can't make the dance moves fun you will trip on yourself & thus lose. Se' la vive!

GOOD SHOW

I LOVED THE "STOMP" ASPECT

A NEW GENRE MANY STILL HAVE NOT MASTERED

HAVE TO SAY

I WAS AMAIZED AT THE REACTION OF THE CONTESTANTS

COMPARED TO THIER PERFORMANCES biggrin.gif

AS I THOUGHT TOVA AND OSCAR HAD A TOUGH TIME OF IT

MOCHI PULLED ALOT OF STRENGTH FROM WITHIN

I ACTUALLY THOUGHT MIGUEL DID NOT DESERVE THE WIN

SHRUG

I GUESS I MISSED SOMETHING THE JUDGES SAW

THOUGHT HE WAS OUT OF CONTROL

PRETTY MUCH ALL OVER THE PLACE

WITH LITTLE OR NO DICIPLINE AS TO THE

AWARENESS OF HIS BEING

HIS ARMS WERE FLAYLING ... STEPS SLIGHTLY OUT OF IT

AND ALMOST COLLIDED WITH MOCHI

WHO I THOUGHT WOULD TAKE IT

HER ARMS WERE WELL PLACED

SHARP MOVEMENTS

CRISP POSITIONING WITH THOSE "HEAVY TRASH CAN COVERS.......

LIKE I SAID ......I GUESS THE JUDGES WERE MORE

FOCUSED AND SAW SOMETHING I DIDN'T tongue.gif

HOPEFULLY RIGHT AFTER OSCAR laugh.gif

SO YOU KNOW HE'S GONNA BE AROUND tongue.gif

NOT THAT I HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST OSCAR

IT JUST SEEMS HE IS NOT FLEXIBLE ENOUGH

YEAH I THINK NICK AND JANELLE

HAD THE MOST FUN THIS EP

BOTH ON AND OFF THE DANCE FLOOR

AND IT WAS ALSO CLEAR TO THE "STOMP"

HAD DIFFICULTIES BUT WAS ABLE TO OVERCOME IT ALL

BY HAVING FUN WITH IT

OBVIOUSLY IT CARRIED TO THE DECISION TABLE

WHERE THEY BOTH WERE HEAVILY CRITISIZED

RIGHT NOW I DON'T HAVE ANY

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Best line I've heard all day.

I'm right there with whoever said that they seemed to give Cody a free pass this week. I didn't see anything spectacular or even particularly decent in the audition, but he somehow ended up in the winning group. I gotta agree that the group should have been Nick, Miguel, Michael, and Mochi. And honestly, when they actually danced freestyle individually out in the center during their final performances; I thought that Nick's was the best all day. It's sad that none of them could hold the rhythm without it constantly being measured out for them. The only one who did something both decent looking AND somewhat close to in time was Nick. If he had been in the winning group, I think he might have ended up with the overall win. But he wasn't biggrin.gif

As for Miguel, I hated that guy in the first two episodes, but....well, I've changed my mind. That cockiness to the point of assholiness, excuse my french, is proving to be quite hilarious at times. I personally love that he and Oscar are both still around, ready to be knocked off before my favorite Nick. I was honestly expecting Oscar to go last night what with 3 women and 5 guys, but they through me a curveball. I guess the producers are better at keeping us guessing than I thought. I definitely knew her outlook was bad when I saw her freestyle dance. It was awful. sad.gif But I figured with the balance of males, and I use that term loosely, to females being so skewed that a dude would have to go. At any rate, I still consider Nick and Cody to be the front runners, and if they do another competition that shows Cody's weaknesses, then I think you'll find the judges being a little harsher on their golden boy.

GO DRAGO!! (a.k.a. Nick)

I don't know if Miguel can be eliminated strictly on this, but in general I'm with you. I see Michael as having less negativity than Miguel. I don't know if this translates to a winning dancer on this show, but I like how Michael interacts with other people. Miguel: take care of your own business first!
dbm
I remember Jamie King saying that they were looking for a "star dancer" and had to consider the "whole package" including attitude. I took that to be both work ethic and maturity. I think Miguel could be a holy terror on a set, and the entertainment world already has enough talented train wrecks. blink.gif

I agree with Guardianangels. In fact that is what I came here to say. It seems tht the show is all about hip hop and street dance which can be exciting, but in all honesty I tuned into the show to see a variety of dance, not just what I grew up seeing on the streets of New York City. So far there has been only one episode that featured dancing other than street dance. Please let's see something else..
BPDQrak
I have seen the show and just couldn't keep quiet any longer. I made a living in the field of dance (tours and companies), and after 30 years had to retire. I was very disappointed when I first saw this show, as it wasn't what I thought (or hoped) it would be about. After reading some of the judges bios and blogs I feel a little more 'informed' about the direction of the show, disappointed, but informed. This show focuses more specifically on the audition process, and what it takes to get work in a more general field of dance. It's message is that in order to get a job in todays market, versatility is the most sought after trait, followed by 'sell-it'. The key phrase here is 'in todays market'. Which 'today' seems as a more trendy, generic category of dance as opposed to a time tested, classically recognized style (with the exception of the ballroom). Don't get me wrong, work is where you find it. There is nothing wrong with getting work as a specific style dancer but lets face it how long was the Charleston the latest thing? To me the name was misleading, perhaps this show could be titled 'Step it up and be a Music Video/ or industrial- production dancer'. Although it isn't likely, even for for this type dancing, a candidate could get by with anything less than a basic level skill set, it does give people with marginal to minimal training a chance to dance professionally. I am sure box office sales indicate that hip hop/ music video styles appeal to the greater part of the masses, and that IS after all the way to succeed - 'sell the most tickets'. It seems clear at this point that the producers don't see a ballet episode as a potential audition for the candidates (after all, ballet doesn't sell tickets the way sex does). I really HOPE that the show organizers have the where-with-all to do AT LEAST ONE episode which demonstrates some type of classic training.

I agree totally with GuardianAngel, about being disappointed with the actual competition style. The previews looked more like it was going to be each Individual Dancer against all of the other contestants.
I want to see each dancer perform ALONE on stage. The winner would receive immunity, and there would be the "safe" dancers, and the "bottom", and of course, the loser.
I can only imagine how Fred Astaire would go toe-to-toe against Gene Kelly! Almost Impossible to choose a winner, But wouldn't that be the type of competition we'd all love to watch?

I'm sick of hip-hop dancing - and group dancing. I want to see the dancers dance solo!

okay so for all of you people hating on miguel...he is just very confident in what he can do.

and why shouldn't he be...have you seen him dance? he's amazing! get over what he's saying and actually watch him dance...that is what this show is about? dancing right?

i am soo glad miguel got immunity this past week. he totally deserved it! he didn't even have to think about his movements...it all came so naturally!

and as far as michael he is not a good dancer. he over thinks everything and is sssoooo boring to watch!

miguel is going to stay on the show til the end! so ENJOY!!!!

I just now got around to seeing the show. The first two weeks it was must see tv, but now it's like, "I'll catch when I catch it". The concept is great but it's just falling really flat.

No variety in the dancing.

The wrong people are being sent home, except for Jessica she should have left in the first episode.

I love Elizabeth, but the other judges are HORRIBLE!!!

Why is Michael still there?

This show had so much promise and all the pieces for success, but as far as I'm concerned it failed misarbly. Since it's only the first season they have time to make it better. After getting better judges, they should then focus on the competitions and make them more varied.

Looks like we'll all have to wait for So You Think You Can Dance, this show comes across as a second rate version of that show...

Fred and Ginger wouldn't even stand a chance in today's youth-obsessed world within which we live. Even my peers (40-something women) would rather chat about Mylie Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers than Fred and Ginger.

This isn't "Dancing With The Stars" or the annual ballroom championships on PBS that the late, great Juliet Prowse used to host. Perhaps "So You Think You Can Dance" is more your cup of tea? They do loads of Latin and smooth dances and it's all partner work.

Hip Hop was only featured in Week 3.

Week 1 featured mainstream video choreography by people who have worked with very accessible pop performers (Madonna, Britney, The Spice Girls).

"Stomp" is the fringey worldwide indie stage hit was Week 4's specialty..

Apache Tango from Week 2 is cabaret meets ballroom.

I don't understand why you're labeling Week 1 and Week 4 as "street".

This "Damn Yankees" challenge will favor Cody and Nick for sure! Janelle will be fine. Mochi also has the heart and soul for it. Miguel might be bored and is lucky to have immunity. Michael will "step it up". I think this is the week that Oscar will go home.

There's a preview video floating around the Bravo site with the cast looking rather exhausted learning the routine from the "Damn Yankees" choregrapher. For some reason, it disappears then resurfaces then disappears again. blush.gif

I don't know if Nick will rock it too hard on the musical theatre challenge. He's never done any of that stuff in the time that I've known him.

When I first stated watching this show I thought it was gonna be like So You THink....but I want to be a dancer. And what I'm seeing is that the show is really teaching me about how hard it is to audition. At first I didn't like it, but now I'm seeing that if you don't put all of yourself and your technique--whatev that is--on the line every time you get in front of a choreographer, you might as well get out of the biz. It's very interesting who can take the heat and who can't.

I agree with you. Those people who think #1 was hip-hop are way wrong. It was more hot jazz or contemporary. Only week #3 was hip-hop. You have to be able to dance every kind of dance if you want to work. Especially in LA.

Here is one way to describe 'Technique' is the way your body moves from pose to pose. Sort of to see if you go through the right arm- hand- head- body placement in almost any dance movement. Not really 'strike a pose' but more like shift through the poses which are the building blocks that make up the 'dance'.
And YES, whether you are auditioning for Madonna or ABT, it is VERY HARD! You need rhino skin sometimes... If it wasn't everyone would want to bust their butt over and over and only sometimes get the job, then barely make more than poverty until you get your name out there, and get in with a reoccurring gig. OR some never make it, it's very iffy. But Perseverance!

episode 4

I'm sick of these dancers complaining about how they don't do a certian type of dance or how this is 20 years of ballet down the drain or whatever.... they need to stop bitching and be dancers. I mean i know dancers are divas, but ya know you can't confine yourself to one style or one genre, you have to do it all and willing to do it all...unless you want to wait tables for the rest of your life. and these guys are throwing away to make probably the most money they will ever make from one gig by bitching insteded of going all out. if they are whineing and disliking doing different kinds of dance they aren't real dancers at heart because athough every dancer has a type of dance they are best in a TRUE dancer won't really care.

Episode 3 is without a doubt the best episode so far! The Brilliance of bringing street fighting dance to a new level is ingenious. No swords, no pistols, just a good wholesome dance-off. It ls like watching a 50's sock-hop but instead of all the dancers being white, they are a melange of light dark, black, white, latin competing in styles that all in one moment might involve a leap and a splits landing. And, you've got dancers like Janelle poising the questions "Oh you wanna do it like that?"--my favorite line of this show.

This challenge showed the true ability of the actors to let go of themselves, dance, and communicate their battle skills and thereby find their core.

Nice job everyone!

Okay, the song is called "Move, Shake, Drop" you can find it under the artist DJ Laz, or pitbull... its on DJ Laz' myspace page.
The song Im trying to find is the song from the actual battle competition, NOT the move, shake, drop song.

The lyrics I remember are: "Dont be scared, make ya move, make ya move, make ya move..."

Does anyone ANYWHERE (cuz Ive been all over the internet) know the artist or name of that song? its a club banger and I want it....BAD.

Thanks xoxo

I have been looking for the same song, I even went slooowwwmmmooo on the credits to see if they listed it there, and they did not. That would be a good idea to give credit to the music that they use. Hope someone out there could help with the name of the song and group.

Considering how Doug was talking about how much it takes to fine-tune everything for Episode 3 I think it actually takes away from the AID in Ep3 idea. He makes it sound unfeasible for them to randomize things.
