When I saw Andrew make that statement I gagged and fell down. Drew was alarmed. He thought I was having another heart attack, but, no, I was just grossed out. Andrew with a boner is not an image I want stuck in my head, especially if he's wearing that football helmet. What...a...dork.

OHHH hope you're OK not bruised or anything from the fall. I know ---it is a bad mental image. But you are so right---dork is the perfect description.

Hi Rady! How's it going?
Now I don't know if I'll be alright watching NFL, they'll look like a bunch of Andrew's playing ball!

Hey schweetie! It's going.

I don't watch NFL, but I, for some reason, can't get the image out of my head---when he was trying to take the helmet off without undoing the chin strap. I wanted to check and see if his shoes were on the right feet!!!!

Dale opted for turkey bratwurst and Spike went puttanesca, but there was still a lot of chicken in use for this Cheap Healthy Challenge. Andrew, Antonia, Lisa, Nikki, Richard, Stephie, went to the chicken.

One can make a nice pasta dish using some braised turkey drumstick though, or thighs, the meat becomes tender, just falls off the bone, stays very moist, and has a richer flavor than white meat poultry.

Probably a bad idea, with kids involved, to go to chicken livers and make a version of Spaghetti a la Caruso? It's chicken livers and mushrooms in a red sauce.

Something using that often regrettable but inexpensive farm-raised Tilapia?

I love chicken Livers!!
Have you ever tried them breaded and fried?

My mother often made them in a red sauce with lots of bell peppers and Worshestire sauce.
Do you have the recipe for Spaghetti a la Carusso? If so I would love it!

Agreed!

You need that curry book that I talked about.

Any suggestions about good Vietnamese books? The only one I have is The Best of Nicole Routhier. I see that she has another book, The Foods of Vietnam. I especially prize books that have the kind of background that you provide.

Aarrgghh! I am a huge football fan, owner of season tickets for the Redskins, and a frequent visitor to the Ravens stadium, when it's possible (Drew's from Balmer). Now, whenever I see a football game, I'll have that mental picture.

Mluv, I haven't had them breaded and fried. But, I do take some flour, get it fairly strongly seasoned with salt, quite a lot of black pepper, and garlic powder. That's about the only time I use garlic powder, but there's no plausible subsitute for it. Clean the livers, drain them and let them dry a bit, shake them in a plastic bag with the seasoned flour, then fry them.

I like them that way but what's surprising is how much others like them that way too. They aren't "crispy," you'd never cook a chicken liver long enough to become crispy, but the coating is still essential. And livers cooked that way fit in well on an American dinner plate or in the middle of a Viet dinner table.

And here's a familiar recipe for Spaghetti a la Caruso. It's good, on its own merits, but also makes a nice change from other red pasta sauces.

Tele, whatever you do, do NOT purchase or borrow a book by some British or Aussie guy named Reid, "New Vietnamese Cooking" or "New Vietnamese Cuisine" or some similar title. Don't get me started.

I think the best resource is Andrea Nguyen and her "Into the Vietnamese Kitchen." She is also the cook and author who maintains VietWorldKitchen, and the VietWorldKitchen blog. She's very much about explaining a dish or food's logic, its place in the cuisine, the changes to it over time and according to place, etc. And she starts up great conversations about Authenticity, "Shaking Beef," etc....

QUOTE (teleburst @ May 1, 2008 - 03:11 PM) *
Funny, I don't remember wall-to-wall coverage of the Right Reverend Pat Robertson when he said virtually the same thing (it wasn't ignored but there was nothing like the firestorm that has erupted over Rev. Wright). I don't remember the right wing component of the media going through the countless hours of outrageous claims that Roberton has made over the years on his TV shows. I don't think I've seen more than a single clip of John Hagee making a single controversial statement that I'm sure could be backed up with plenty of whacko stuff.

I think there's an undercurrent of "look at the crazy black man, honey" that's running through not only right wing outlets like Fox but also more left-leaning organizations like CNN. Of course, it probably helps that I watch Jon Stewart daily since they distill it in a focused and humorous manner. They had a great clip last night about Billy Graham, pulled from the Nixon tapes where he smacks down the Jews in a pretty bad way, and this is the first I've heard of it. And here's a guy who's been the spiritual advisor for virtually every president since then.

Teleburst,
I don't know too much about Rev Robertson as I never watched his show over the years. I know he is anti-Catholic but then I am not a fan of the Catholic church in my area because of the number of pedophile priests in my area that got shuttled off to another parish instead of facing the music. Many years ago my wife was the school nurse for the local catholic school. The priest who was in charge of the school was asked to resign because he had molested a young boy. Only a couple of years ago, this same priest came back to preside over a funeral service for one of the church members. As for Billy Graham I have never been a fan of his either. When I was a boy scout working for my God and Country Award, it used to drive me nuts that my pastor and his wife subsisted on a church allowance which was a mere pitance(we were a small country church) would so admire Billy Graham who was living the life of the rich and the famous. Graham was chauffered around in a Cadillac while my pastor had this little British puddle jumper that wasn't much bigger than a golf cart. The Graham lifestyle was a bit like Rev Wright who lives in a white neighborhood in a $million+ home.

With regards to John Hagee, Hagee is not John McCain's pastor. Hagee endorses John McCain, but it is not a 2-way street in that McCain only is in agreement with some of Hagee's beliefs. Hagee is pro-Jewish and favors a pre-emptive strike on Iran. Although McCain hasn't been forced to come out and completely divorce himself from Hagee like Obama has with Wright, he did say in an interview with George Stephanopoulos that it was probably a mistake to accept Hagee's endorsement.

No, the Rev Wright is not crazy, but he is rooted in the past with all the mistreatment of blacks and needs to let it go. The blacks aren't the only minorities who have suffered in this country but you hardly hear anything from them today. Instead of whining about what happened in the past they have worked to elevate themselves to where oppression by the former oppressors exists no more.

All I can say is that it takes a stretch of the imagination to believe that Obama could be a member of Wright's congregation for 20 years and just lately be aware of the inflamatory statements that Wright said on video.

Some people put a touch of mustard on the liver before wrapping, but another nice twist is to add a slice of water chestnut.

QUOTE (SivartAlappes @ May 1, 2008 - 07:00 PM) *
Again, with my cooking style, it's something insanely easy but tastes fantastic! biggrin.gif

Get a pot of water and put both cauliflower and broccoli. You're going to let it rise to a boil with the veggies inside (this will obviously take a lot longer than just boiling water, but you want the veggies to actually be a little over coocked so they're very soft.

Drain the water out and mash the cauliflower and broccoli as you would with mashed potatoes. Season it with salt and pepper. Put in some cream softened cream cheese and mix it in thouroughly.

Have a bowl of flower waiting. Depending on your tastes, you can either leave the flower plain (since the veggie/creamcheese mixture is already seasoned), or you can add either paprika for a more classic taste, or even chili powder or cheyenne if you want a little kick!

This WILL BE STICKY! take some of the veggie/creamcheese mixture and put it in the flower. Make sure it's well covered with the flower as you form it into a patties.

Have a pan hot and ready to go with some vegitable oil (you can use olive oil if you prefer). Then, fry the patties until they're a golden brown and a little crispy around the edges.

You can eat them as is, or even dip them in ranch dressing!

Thanks, and I dare say you'll get comments on your caveat blush.gif

Sounds wonderful -- only for me, I would need to add two final steps to the recipe --

Take double dosage of Lipitor to counteract massive cholesterol overdose.

Put ambulance on auto dial in anticipation of emergency need.

QUOTE (Radyms13 @ May 2, 2008 - 11:19 AM) *
Just found this for all the bacon lovers....

Ahh, bacon! That crispy, chewy, salty and sinful cut of pork we all love.

Bacon has disciples far and wide, some of whom devote entire blogs to it. The Bacon Show, for example, posts a daily recipe featuring bacon; the site "101 Things Every Cook Should Cook" has an entire section devoted to bacon. Heather, of the site "Bacon Unwrapped", chronicles her adventures with bacon, and "Bacontarian" brings you bacon-y goodness from around the Internet, while "I Heart Bacon" conducts bacon reviews.

For those who've spent more time eating it than studying it, bacon is cut from the sides, belly, or back of a pig, near the ribs. It's the fattiness of the meat that makes it so yummy. After the skin is cut away, the meat is cured, smoked, and sliced. It can be cooked in a pan on the stovetop, in the oven, or in the microwave, until it's perfectly crisp.

You probably know bacon as the star of the BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, in case you didn't know), and the bacon cheeseburger. But there are so many other ways we can incorporate it into our diets and our lives! Here are 50 ways to use bacon:

1. Make a good old BLT sandwich, of course.

2. Bacon cheeseburgers will make anyone's mouth water. Meat topped with more meat? Perfection!

3. Bacon-wrapped tater tots would go perfectly with that bacon cheeseburger!

4. Roast a bacon-wrapped turkey for Sunday dinner.

5. Make delicious bacon pastry slices.

6. Add a punch of flavor to your creamed spinach recipe.

7. Make your own hot bacon dressing to use on lettuce, cabbage, or even potato salad!

8. Entertaining? Whet your guests' appetites with the bacon-cheese fundido appetizer.

9. Indulge in a bar of dark chocolate infused with the flavor of applewood smoked bacon as a special treat.

10. Maple bacon cupcakes will make your mouth water.

11. And if you liked those, try a bacon chocolate chip cookie with maple cinnamon glaze.

12. It's not real, southern cornbread unless there's bacon grease in it.

13. Visit The Plaid Mushroom's e-shop to smother your lips with bacon lip balm made with real bacon oil, refined from bacon. (The link is to a listing that was reserved for a certain buyer, but contact theplaidmushroom to ask for your own listing.)

14. Join the bacon of the month club to have artisan bacon delivered to your door 12 times a year.

15. The beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina gives us bacon-flavored cotton candy.

16. Enjoy a bacon martini with any meal.

17. Use bacon to dress up your leftovers for a second visit to the dinner table.

18. Whip up a tasty bacon asparagus quiche with Swiss cheese for dinner.

19. Cook bacon into the shape of cups and fill with lettuce and tomato for a breadless BLT.

20. Stay warm by wrapping a giant fleece bacon scarf around yourself.

21. Even if you're a vegetarian and/or keep a kosher diet, you can still enjoy the taste of bacon salt, because, as the manufacturers say: "Everything should taste like bacon."

22. If pork-covered pork appeals to you, you may also enjoy the bacon-wrapped deep-fried hot dog.

23. Trim your holiday tree with joyful ceramic bacon ornaments.

24. Use bacon instead of ground beef in stuffed peppers.

25. Get the morning off to a good start with beer cheese muffins with bacon cream cheese frosting.

26. Impress your guests with deceptively simple bacon-wrapped "crabette" appetizers.

27. A bacon-y take on an Asian favorite: bacon and bok choy potstickers.

28. Weave and bake bacon into edible placemats.

29. Then, use the woven bacon to augment your grilled cheese experience.

30. Or, use woven bacon to cook up an eggless bacon and cheese omelet.

31. Bacon and date appetizers will be the hit of your party.

32. Bacon egg salad croissants put a new spin on an old favourite.

33. Then, have a bowl of bacon ice cream for dessert.

34. Then use an actual bacon bandage to cover your own boo-boos.

35. Or wake up to cooking bacon with the bacon alarm clock, which is appropriately shaped like a pig's face.

36. Add it to your bathroom in the form of bacon-printed toilet tissue.

37. Then, use it to wash up afterward.

38. Bacon popcorn is a deliciously salty, crunchy snack!

39. Try your hand at making your own bacon.

40. Enjoy barbecue-baked beans with bacon alongside your BLT.

41. Cook up a bacon buffet with bacon-topped potato skins, bacon-wrapped shrimp and scallops, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and eggs cooked in bacon grease.

We can live without our Terp Basketball, though, especially last year, when I had them picked for the Elite Eight and they, to put it mildly, disappointed me. mad.gif

I tend to put my NCAA basketball money on the Lady Terps. They rarely disappoint, although I thought they'd go further in March.

Damn! I'm class of 1978, and you've just me feel like I'm 105!

Not so old, Tom! I was gone before you got there.

BTW, do da name Chrissellene Petropoulos (class of '75) ring any bells?

Tell me. Highest I ever got was Off-Off, and let's not even talk about my 2 film credits.......<shudder>

But I'm so happy for Dan, especially since he really made an impression with the whole creative staff--they wanted to be on the call when the director called to tell him he'd been cast.

The closest I got was back in 80 I think it was I got cast in the First Evita before it made Broadway... I was cast in the chorus.... but as soon as the word Opera came up and being a young young actor I bowed out... I know stupid...... Then I got cast in 77 by Howard Prince to be in The Best [expletive deleted] House in Texas for the Broadway run as a Texas Football player ala Dancer but I had to leave for college the next week so I turned that down as well.

Young and Foolish I know.. lol

I grew up in musical Theatre not the greatest voice in the world but The Word Opera scared the crap out of me.... blush.gif

I Have made mistakes in my early life I was given a 4 year contract for The Young and The Restless...lol I turned it down because I had just moved to L.A. and did not want to move to NY.... So when General Hospital came around I took it because I thought the universe was giving me a secound shot.

Well atleast your roomie got his shot and is doing it.... I got beat out for the Role in " I Love You Phillip Morris" with Jim Carrey and Ewin Mcgregore... such is life. I really Wanted that part so badly. But if it is not meant to be well.... unsure.gif

Hopefully I'll get the next one.

Hmmm, this post was edited.

I guess even cynics can have a brain fart.

LOL oh absolutely because adding a word for clarity is the same as confusing who was in your top three and what food they made on the TV show your paid to Host/Judge.
