Great points, especially about the kid challenge. I liked that Lisa tossed the garlic when the kid said they didn't like it. If that was Tiff from season 1 she would have had that kid roasting whole cloves of it for the Appitiser. lol.

Whole roast pigs (i.e., lechon) are indeed a staple of Filipino parties. When Partner and I host our big Filipino yard party later this month, the roast pig will be the most prominent entree. It just wouldn't feel like an authentic "pista" (fiesta) without the pig there.

Of course, we won't roast the pig ourselves. There is a Filipino bakery/caterer in the heavily Filipino part of our county in Maryland that does a good business preparing pigs for Filipinos and their celebrations. Filipinos across the river in Northern Virginia will often order their roast pigs from a Vietnamese caterer, since there is no Filipino pig-roaster convenient to them. The flavors are very similar, but the Virginia Pinoys who come to our parties often comment that they like our parties because they can tell the pigs were roasted Filipino style. (As for me, the dumb American partner, I honestly can't tell the difference.)

Food Network is all about food so you see Paula, Giata, Alton, Flay, Irvine (who is being fired for inflating his resume) and the rest a lot more because they are exposed more due to the single-mindedness of the network! Last season's winner of The NFNStar, Amy, has been seen once by me and it was more a promo of her upcoming show! I still haven't seen it! Looks like she taped the one, then jumped ship and moved to France until her little boy grows up! I read something about her coming back when he's ready for kindergarten! She and her husband are living in a small town and she doesn't seem to having any regrets!
