QUOTE (SimonBao @ June 5, 2008 - 08:15 AM) *
I can think of 2 things, Jim... One, it's been a weak season, with weak contestants. That is why Richard and Stephanie score so high, their scores are based on the frequency with which they beat peers of their own season... Hung was exceptional, but his peers last season were also good and much closer to him in talent.

Two, there's nothing *wrong* or *illicit* or *conspiratorial* with the judging, not that I can see... it's the way things go... but Lisa is far behind Richard and Steph in talent. If you'd never told me who won challenges, never showed me scores, I think I'd know that just from watching her make her dishes and looking at what goes in them.

Actually, once you get past Hung, you don't have another Season 3 chef in double digits--Casey's next with 7 points.

The top 10 for all time are:

Richard (S4) - 28
Stephanie (S4) - 24
Hung (S3) - 21
Harold (S1) - 17
Ilan (S2) - 16
Tiffani (S1) - 15
Antonia (S4) - 13
Sam (S2) - 13
Andrew (S4) - 12
Dale (S4) - 12

If anyone dominated his season, it was Hung.

My first post here.

I'm sorry to say that I'm not looking forward to the finale. Lisa just is too irritating and certainly doesn't inspire me in any way. I can't stand watching her. I like that Antonia put a lot of heart and love into her food. Where she fell down here was the choice to serve the beans. I think she should have thought about what she would have served her child. Never would she have given her undercooked beans unless she wanted a night in hell. I also loved that Stephanie didn't freak out at Dale, but actually adapted and the judges raved about the final dish.

As someone who doesn't eat chicken or red meat, I have really been turned off by the butchering in the last few episodes. I know that's a necessary talent, and people really should think about what they are eating, but it seemed to go on forever.

And who sat in her chair with her arms crossed with a sour look on her face and said nothing when Dale left? She is not exactly the epitome of etiquette in these things. the word Hypocrite comes to mind...

Excellent point, Ni. Lisa can't expect Steph and Richard to jump for joy that she's still there, given how she's treated pretty much everyone she's worked with.

this is from Hungry magazine..

Yes, that's right, my hometown Detroit Red Wings just won the Stanley Cup and since I write about food, I'm being self-indulgent and celebrating on this blog. Now, on to Top Chef…

1 - I thought deep fry oil represents Puerto Rican food more than any other ingredient.

2 – Richard almost loses his faux hawk, which is clearly an OSHA violation, to a gas fire.

3 – In case you didn't see it, Stephanie loves Tahoe boys.

4- - Lisa basically had a problem with everyone.

5 – I wonder if Spike is going to stuff Richard's pig with frozen pork.

6 – Spike should offer Lisa a joint to take the edge off…not that I'm saying he smokes pot or anything.

7 – Yea, Stephanie makes a good decision and avoids mass Trichinosis. Dude if Spike had left Lisa's pork belly out, she would have cut off his left nostril.

8 – Dude, I miss Hung going all hardcore. These contestants are too friendly to one another.

9 – Wow, Antonia's daughter is willing to be an orphan unless her mom wins. Maybe she should be on Top Chef instead.

10 – How come Colicchio hasn't visited the kitchen in his pristine blue chef's coat?

11 – Did anyone tell Padma this wasn't a Toga party?

12 – Are Colichhio and Wilo Benet brothers from different mothers?

13 – I'm starting to get the feeling that much like Sampson, Lisa's strength was in her hair.

14 – Richard is really thinking, yo, when I win this I'll be driving a Mercedes.

15 - Antonia, she gone.

Can someone PLEASE tell me who on the show that Lisa is giving more than recipes to?! I thought Tom had a good palate, how can he even stand the bad taste that Lisa brings to the table EVERY week!

I can understand they want to bring some drama to Television, but good gawd! WE ARE SICK OF HER ALREADY, SHE SUCKS! Do you not get that Judges?!

Lisa, the reason you were not congratulated was because you don't DESERVE to be, YOU SUCK!. How many people have you been nice to on that show, you EARNED the right not to be congratulated. I don't know what resturant you will work at after this is over, but I can promise you this.. I would NEVER eat at your resturant, I don't want to spend time in the hospital for food poisoning!

I guess Top Chef doesn't want to win anymore awards, because this show will serverely go downhill by keeping a low rate chef in the running. Just goes to show that Lisa is living proof that if you can make a peanut butter sandwich you can apply for Top Chef and make it to the finals!

Clean your Palate judges, and figure out that Lisa's food is fourth rate at BEST.. PACK HER KNIVES AND GO!

Jim, that's what made it seem so likely that Hung would do well in the finale... and he did WELL... and also what made it kind of electrifying, to watch and wait and see if Dale or Casey would speed on past Hung and end up winning. I would never have wanted Hung to fail... just for Dale and Casey to do something extraordinary. I'm not sure I'm finding anything electrifying this season.... with only one episode left.

How is it even possible that Lisa is still here? She should have gone home a long time ago. How many times has she been on the chopping block now?

It was awesome seeing Dale back in the kitchen. I knew he would get picked first as sous chef. You know Richard was hoping to have the chance to work with him but it was a total no-brainer for Steph to choose him. I felt so bad when he left that pork sitting out all night. Obviously he wasn't thinking about Marcel in Season 2's finale. He definitely came through in the end though. I only wish he was still in the game.

My top 3 chefs: Dale, Richard, and Stephanie. IMHO, no one else deserves to be in the finals.

Simon .. here is a thought; if you had spent the past multiple weeks with a person that was just a pain to deal with and you had just found out that heading in to that last week of a compitition you were going to have to deaL with that same person again I would think you would be less than happy... that might explain Richard's and Steph's attitude toward Lisa.

Or maybe Rich and Steph were just in SHOCK! Even Lisa thought (and said) that she was the one going. If all was right with the world, Lisa would have been the one reporting that she was out. Richard and Stephanie had to hear the news, then say good-bye to their friend and the better chef -- I'm sure 'congratulating' the 11-time-loser who lucked into the final 3 spot instead of someone who deserved to be there was not the first thing on their minds.
rlane
After watching last night I was so upset! Lisa should have been gone. I don't care if she can cook, which, I don't believe she can. Antonia should still be there. If Lisa wins this season I will never watch this show again. If nothing else she probably should have been sent home just because of her behavior and attitude towards the judges. I am just really disqusted. I wanted Antonia, Stephanie, and Richard in the finale. I can't chose between those three, but, now its down to Stephainie and Richard. I just hate watching Lisa on the show at all.

Shy... Andy Cohen is sorta kinda real... though it's difficult to imagine that. Sheesh. But no, Jack Donaghy is a character borrowed from 30 Rock. BUT if they ever do meet... yes... Jack Donaghy WOULD do something "really really bad." And myself, I love imagining that seductively dark side to Lee Anne Wong. LOL

Yes, you did hear Stephanie say that it was 6 months between the end of the regular round of challenges, and their arrival in Puerto Rico for the finals.

We know the regular challenges were in October, possibly October/November... that puts the finals sometime in April or May 2008.

If you're really "not playing"...

"Regular" people can in fact purchase whole animals or bigger cuts of animals than you typically find shrink-wrapped in a store. "Regular" people can procure such things from a rancher or farmer at a farm or ranch or at a farmers market.

Are you kidding with the "done by machines in a more factory-like way" thing? That is what has led to hideous animal cruelty and ecoli and a whole host of other diseases and bacterias that necessitates that poor quality meat be cooked to a well-done state to kill it all off. And has created a lot of vegetarians and vegans (see above comments).

No I wasn't kidding. It's not something I've given much thought to. Honestly, I've assumed it would be 'safer' to buy stuff from a store. In my mind, you go to some farm or rancher (or for that matter even to the farmer's market) and how do you know what you're getting? Just 'trust' them? Clearly, I'm not knowledgable in this area, so I would think that all of those 'regulations' are protecting me. I did read "the jungle" a long time ago -- but I thought everything got 'fixed' after that. Guess not. I'm going to do some research.

Really honestly -- thanks for talking about this -- I didn't know.

You aren't fit to share the room with any of her personalities. I cannot believe that Lisa (who has been in the bottom of the majority of elimination challenges) has made it to the final three. I know that every season there has been a "villian" (Tiffany, Marcel/Ilan (dependant on the week), Hung) but the difference before these chefs and Lisa is that they have TALENT. The fact that she actually snapped at Richard and Stephanie for not congratulating her is a joke. Perhaps its because they know that Dale, Antonia, or Jen should have been there. Of all the seasons of Top Chef this is the worst. Let's hope that it improves next season.

I think the Producers of the show would argue that getting the viewers this crazed about a constestant on the show is a talent in and off itself.

Shy, one thing that might be a little unusual is that with this Final, they not only had the 6 month hiatus... the chefs knew it would be in Puerto Rico and at least a couple did some studying in advance, played with plaintains, played doing tostones (or fritters)...

As much as I like the show on some level I do understand that it is a cynical presentation of what the executives at Bravo think will "sell" to the target audience (me, I think).

I've been largely OK with that -- they've upped the cheesy product placement ("the Glad family") along with upping the quality of the chefs. And the quality of the chefs and Tom Coliccio (sp?) has made it worth watching (try watching Hell's Kitchen for contrast).

But to all of you Bravo "suits" that read this blog, there are limits. Look at the "The Apprentice".

This season has felt more manipulated by the producers in charge of drama than any other. Again, this has been mitigated by having higher quality participants than previous seasons.

But please understand that there are limits. Including bad-attitude-lesbian for dramatic effect does undermine the essential appeal of the show.

Last season they went with Chefs that all got along and could cook very well. This season we got chefs who didn't really get along and cooked pretty inconsistantly as a whole. And your right through it all we got the most convoluted judging ever and we end up with a Drama inducing hack in the finale. Coincidence? Not likely.

Everyone keeps slamming the show and the judges.
But the rules of the show are very clear. Lisa did a great job, with a few minor flaws, and Antonia made a "fatal" mistake, undercooking the beans. It was enough to put her behind Lisa. Props to Lisa for performing at a high enough level to beat Antonia on an obviously bad day.

I like Anotonia's personality much more than Lisa's AND I think she's the better chef, but she did worse on the elimination challenge than Lisa and that's what matters.

Peace,
Brone

Lisa made three "fatal" mistakes a few episodes ago. Undercooking beans rice and shrimp and stayed. It's the judging.

The fact that Steph did not completely freak out on Dale for leaving the pork out just shows what a class act she is. The fact that they were able to come up with another dish that the judges loved just shows what kind of talent she has.

If that had happened to Lisa, she would have completely freaked out, kicking, screaming and throwing everything.

I don't mind if they have abrasive personalities, this is, after all, reality television - it makes for very heated discussions and great ratings. What I don't like is that someone with exceptionally inferior talent has managed to end up in the finals. That is just completely WRONG.
