I find it odd that that still from "The Little Mermaid" should be the post before this, as I just saw "The Lion King" last night, and I was completely, and totally, nonplussed by the entire experience.

Don't misunderstand me. It was still a much, much better evening than either "Beauty and the Beast", or "The Little Mermaid", but, unlike the first time I saw it, when it first opened, I was all too aware of the shows limitations.

First of all I was entirely too aware of the Elton John songs, which, while never approaching the lows of his "Aida", are, at best serviceable. The pain. The pain.

I was also aware that the design that was so revolutionary, when it first opened, now seems dated and trite. It's no longer eye opening. The boredom. The boredom.

Lastly, the cast is not top notch. At all. At all.

Now, it was the first time Drew and Denny had seen it, and I was not going to ruin their enjoyment, but I could have missed it, and not missed a thing.

The things you put up with for your loved ones never seemed so large as they seemed last night. If you haven't seen it I would still say it's worth seeing, but.....well....I just don't know.

Hi MoHub!

Wanna do hair questions?

What kind of haircut do you have right now? Did your mother ever make you wear your hair in a style that you hated? Do you have a favorite stylist?

My dad always said he never met a woman who was satisfied with her hair.... laugh.gif

Personally, I love the haircut I have right now. biggrin.gif

Ok I am not one to throw the race card around but I think its a little odd that the majority of the hairdressers on this show are white.

And how strange that the first cut is the only black participant. Is the hair industry not that diverse? I find that very hard to believe that there are no Asians, or Black folks out there who'd like a shot at fame.

It seems like there is one token Miami Latina on the show? But that's about it. Last year seemed much more diverse.

Anyone else agree?

LOL

I love my hair cut. I should for, except for the hairs that have departed the premises, I've had it since 1982.

What can I say? I'm a man, and that stuff isn't important. We find what we like and let it go at that.

I have a Sassoon-style bob with fluffy bangs.

Yes. When I was in 7th grade, my hair was cut in short, permed curls that came straight up off my hairline.

If you're talking personal stylist, I adore my guy. I've known him 25 years, and he's been cutting my hair for 18.

I love my haircut! My guy and I went through several styles before we hit the current one about 3 years ago. We always consult together on what both of us are looking for.

The only thing we disagree about is that I want to let my hair grey naturally. It's still mostly brown with a nice "skunk line" on one side of my bangs and the occasional glint of silver in other spots. He insists that in a few years, I'm going to want to cover the grey and that my hair will look dull otherwise. I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

I didn't watch Season One, but I did notice that on both Top Chef 4 and Shear Genius 2 the lone Black contestant was the first to be eliminated. Nimma, on Top Chef.. for oversalting food and Oshun for, I suppose, giving a bad haircut and perhaps a "Lucy" style too young for the client.. I'm just guessing as I don't think it was the worst style, nor near the best of them.

Don't you think that there are other considerations of diversity besides race? I am from a small town in Massachusetts and sometimes it seems like Texas and California are different countries.. regional differences. Then some of the contestants are salon owners, others recently graduated from school. And there is most likely diversity in age, religion, sexual preference, marital status, politics, disability, economics/education/class.. all those other things we don't like to talk about but that sometimes divide people more than skin color IMO.

I supposed in a previous post that Oshun was more skilled in color, curl, wave and weave than cutting, but I made the assumption that Oshun mainly worked on African American hair which may have been my error. I was hoping to see him use ribbon curls or a woven bun in a formal style and wow the judges. You never see hair tongs in most salons and you rarely see a blowdryer in a salon that specializes in Black hair so maybe it would be tough to devise a challenge fair to all backgrounds?

No. Should Oshun have been left till the finals just because of his color, even though he obviously deserved to be sent home?

I think when we start counting ethnic backgrounds, we lose sight of what the show is about- hair. IMHO

I agree with you....

I am anxiously awaiting the day when race, gender, sexual identity, religious affiliation, etc.... are no longer an issue...

I hope it comes in my lifetime.... seems like the younger generation are looking at people as people not just as black, white, man, woman, hindu... etc... I hope so....

BTW I really dislike the term "RACE"- we are all one race, the human race.
There are cultural differences based on what geographic region our ancestors lived,
but only one race of humans....
but our governments like to keep us separated into easily defined demographics so....
until we change it.... it will continue.

We have so many more commonalities than we ever will differences...

Well like I said I'm the last person to play the "race card" because I get very annoyed when people do that.

But looking at the basic white wash of contestants and white wash of judges it does seem a little odd that in trying to find contestants for a game show they couldn't come up with a more diverse group. Especially when they did the first time?

Its not as if the show is about true skill or talent, its a GAME show basically. And a pretty low brow game show.

Additionally I recognize that contrary to popular belief African Americans make up on 12% of the entire population so I don't expect it to be 50 50.

However I can't see how the blue non hair style and that god awful toad the wet sproket version of Peg Bundy got a pass and his lame style true, was deemed the worst?

It seemed to me his attitude had a lot more to do with it than anything else.

I do try not to get worked up about eliminations and so on. Nothing I think will affect the outcome, after all.

You know, I would be enjoying the show no matter what the ethnic makeup is. I don't care if a person is orange or purple, from Neptune or Pluto, prefers the same sex or the opposite. I just love watching them work and interact. That is why I watch.

Yeah, that blue hair was atrocious!!

My haircut is a Clara Bow bob with spikey bangs.

I adore my stylist. I've known her since she was 3 and I was her babysitter. Our families grew up together. She is a very talented woman. She studied with a couturiere for seven years; designed clothes for about 5 years, then learned some amazing apholstery skills. We're talking high-end custom furnishings here.

She then went to cosmotology school and has owned a salon for over a decade. I think she could be on SG or PR and easily make it to the finals.

ok snaggles are u ready to step into the real world? first oshun was terrible and should have been cut. second old girl from top chef was a line cook and should not have made the show.

why is everybody so scared of race? yes we're the same people but we don't have the same hair! well let's talk texture then. is this show representing all textures of hair? no. this sometimes has been to the detriment of the competitors. it just cost matthew. they all choose from models of the same limp naturally straight or wavy hair. half of which is bleached out. model call should have all textures represented so true genius can be shown. no one is really out of their element. let's just say many walks of life eat from the hair industry.

plus the male? hosts look a mess! rene is killing the english language. he is not working on it off season. kim looks like a kim doll with the pink lips(wtf). the show is not appealing to a wide enough audience.
OKiniA
Speaking of current haircuts I am sick of my no style length...why don't they share their own haircuts and style for their own hair on their bios?? I am wanting to cut my hair and I LOVE Gail's hairstyle but not sure how to tell my stylist to do that?? Any idea where that style's inspiration is from???
Thanks.

The point I was making (if you read the thread post by post, in order.... I think you will understand better) was that someone had posted about race being an issue....

MY point was that I look forward to race NOT being an issue... that we should NOT cast a show based on race & we should NOT judge a performance based on race....

My point was (and I really don't think you understood it!) race, creed, gender, etc. SHOULD NOT be an issue...
I am well aware that it is an issue in our culture!

My post stated that I long for the day when that is not such an obvious truth.
polite
What's with all the "I wish race wasn't an issue" crap? Is that some way of side stepping around the fact that none of the hair stylists, the judges, the girls getting their hair done or the guest judges have been black?

I mean race is race but hair is a whole different ball game. And how MANY TIMES? have we heard someone on the show make mention of "Asian Hair" so its not as if the fact that a GASP person of a different race might have different type sof hair, has not been brought up on the show.

But this is total white wash. Matthew is so bent he looks like Will Farrel went under cover and decided to pretend to be a character on the show.

I love my wife? I'm gonna pick a dress my wife would wear, I miss my wife. I'm so excited that my wife is a wife. Meanwhile his wife is probably a blow up doll dressed just so, with a bowl of Fruit Loops in "her" lap to tide her over under he could come back home and he suddenly realized the milk was gonna spoil. I could totally imagine Matt being married to one of the hair dolls.

How the hell did this man even make it on the show?

That's what I don't get. The other hairstylists are pretty terrible. Only Charlie stands a chance in hell because he's the only one with any real talent. Although I think Dee might surprise everyone.

If you disagree disagree but spare me the kindler gentler "wouldn't it be terrif if race doesn't matter and we could all just let the white folks have their white worlds like the one on Friends? Can't we all just get along and ignore the minorities?

That's what it seems like. For this kind of show there should be minorities showing up as contestants as guests and judges and hair girls as well. Not a total white wash.

The fact that you only notice the "color" of the models, contestants, hosts, judges etc.... is proof that "race" is very important to you...

I see everyone as people...

Do I wish there was a better representation of ALL people on TV & in the media? YES!

Do I wish all TV & Movies represented an accurate depiction of our world? Abso-F'n-Lutely!

But should a "minority" character (even a GAY one) be included over a more suitable contestant, just based on filling a "quota"? HELL NO!

As far as your statement "there should be minorities showing up as contestants as guests and judges and hair girls as well. Not a total white wash"-
I believe there have been representatives of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds portrayed. I don't think I have seen any black women...
and if that is the main thrust of your argument (which it sounds like it is)...
you should send a note to the producers of SG or to Bravo...
I cannot speak to that for them (nor do I think anyone on these boards should either)...

My personal opinion (as I've attempted to state before) is that we should all be proud of our individual heritages and celebrate the diverse differences in others....
whatever culture or ethnicity we are from...

Differences should not only be accepted but embraced.

I do not believe in judging individuals based on what geographic location their ancestors are from or what their religious beliefs may be.

If my opinion of how I choose to see the world and it's citizens,
is what you are opposed to... that is your prerogative....

But if you are going to take umbrage with a statement of mine...
you should know my opinions first.
polite
That's funny that you consider race "COLOR" that's not what race means to me. Its a representation of people from a specific ethnic group that embodies many things.

I don't look at people as crayons in a box. I look at people and see what they admire about themselves. I don't see how trying to get to a point of ignoring race is going to make things better.

Wiki defines race this way

The term race or racial group usually refers to the concept of dividing humans into populations or groups on the basis of various sets of characteristics.[1] The most widely used human racial categories are based on visible traits (especially skin color, cranial or facial features and hair texture), and self-identification

Interestingly hair texture is a significant part of race. The show has not represented the black race very well on this show. Understandably working with black hair is probably a bit different than working with white hair and so that's probably got a lot to do with it. But there are other ways this can be represented and not all black women have the same hair.

It seems like you have a real problem Snaggle with people not agreeing with you. I have no need to send a letter to Bravo or Shear Genius because I'm expressing myself here.

I suppose the next thing you are going to wish for is a world where people no longer express themselves about things that you don't agree with or care about.

Instead of shooing me off, if you feel this is a non issue then don't respond? Perhaps?? rolleyes.gif

I agree with the main point of your post that I quoted. Our skin color often influences our experiences in this world. A person does not have to have a university degree in African American studies or Asian studies to know this fact.

Kim Vo stated in the segment judging the "red carpet" styles, that he often works with "Asian hair". It seems obvious that African-American hair requires special skills as well, so why the glaring omission in the model pool? Would Oshun have fared better with an African-American model? Maybe, maybe not. But from watching the pro hairdressers on Project Runway work on models of many races and hair types, I don't see what the big problem is doing it here.

I just went back and reread this thread and can see the pattern developing of dissecting posts and creating an argument for dissensions sake and I will endeavor to take the high road....

BTW NiCi, I got my hair cut yesterday and I went in asking for a Daniel Craig cut... (I even brought a picture of DC from Golden Compass)...

But I came home and my roommate said "Who did you piss off?" LOL

Luckily my hair grows pretty quickly but.... I now will look like an extra from GI Jane for the next few weeks...

Oh BTW, This was done "scissor over comb" for 75 minutes... and two shampoos!!!
Something that would have taken me 5 minutes in front of the bathroom mirror with a pair of clippers!

BTW NiCi, I got my hair cut yesterday and I went in asking for a Daniel Craig cut... (I even brought a picture of DC from Golden Compass)...

And came out looking like a first day of bootcamp recruit with a crewcut!

True confession: I got tired of being charged extra, and rarely getting the cut I had asked for so.... I watched very closely how they did what they did ph34r.gif ... and have been cutting my own hair for about 15 years now! laugh.gif

People can't believe I do it myself... I save bunches of money, always get just the cut I want (and I have had it very short and quite long in that time)... tongue.gif

I even cut friend's hair and trim the neighbor's kid's hair between cuts!

Hey! blink.gif Maybe I should be on Shear Genius!!!!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I can't believe you just came out of the self-haircutting closet! And here of all places! LOL wub.gif

I used to cut my own hair (with clippers in a military "high & tight"- short around sides and back- little longer on top) for about 10 years....

But since moving to LA, I let my hair grow a little and I have cowlicks in the back so I need some "professional assistance"...

I also like the way most stylists add texture to my thick, bushy hair... It's something I can never do myself (with anything nearing confidence anyway- I always feel like I ended up on the wrong side of the battle with a weedwacker)....

If I do let my hair grow unabated... I look like a Monchichi on crack!!! blink.gif

Quick hello, folks! You're lucky you cut your own hair!

TRUE STORY........I tried, exactly once to cut my own hair (just the bangs/front) many many many moons ago! My best friend had been a professional stylist back when her kids were very very young, so she always helped me out. The one time I got impatient and trimmed the bangs and front myself, she fixed it.....with the threat to cut my fingers off with a dull spoon if I ever took scissors to my own hair again.
ohmy.gif
LOL....nowadays, I just match the blonde shade I like to the little blonde hairpiece and am growing it out! :-)
...Chapter five, complete with flashback scene awaits completion!

If you have a friend who will help you, it is all good! wink.gif
But I will say that my cutting has vastly improved since my first cut!!! laugh.gif
I did not mind experimenting on my own hair, but the first time I cut someone else's hair I was shaking!!!! blink.gif
Now I have been doing it so long, it is no prob!!!! biggrin.gif (and my friends like being able to stretch out their haircuts with trims from me inbetween!)

Thank you for getting the direction of my post. I've seen plenty of other shows that require the women to be done up (America's Next Top Model, Project Runway) and yet on this show everyone is all about the white hair.

I probably wouldn't have noticed it if we hadn't heard several times that "Asian Hair' was XYZ...etc etc etc.

If the stylists were uber talented then maybe I could believe that the pool to choose from was based on skill but obviously this is not the case at all.

Walgreens.. $5.99! It's great!

Don't laugh, I have actually used this product! Made my hair shinier and easy to comb out, but didn't improve the texture. Oh well blink.gif

I second that! ph34r.gif Would love to find a hair designer that could do "something" with my hair. It's dk brn and so thick most stylist say I have enough hair for 3 people. Wish I could be on the show so "somebody" could do it justice. It has been referred to liking to a horses tail. laugh.gif

Ohhh, I have lots and lots of hair. Lots. Problem is, it is very fine. If it wasn't for a natural wave, it would just hang there, limp. Most products weigh it down. I've been seeing my hairdresser for 14 years, but it's still a challenge for the both of us!

I am in awe of anyone who can cut their own hair. Two thumbs up!

I have an idea that I think would make a really interesting Challenge on SG...

What if the stylists are given clients with no (or very little hair)...
What if the models have lost their hair due to illness or injury and need a great wig?
I think it would be awesome to see what a stylist would do for a client if they had no limitations...
They could choose the length, the color, even the texture that they feel is appropriate for that woman.
And then cut and style the wigs and present the ladies with a really high end wig to take home...

There would be tears during the catwalk for sure...(Ladybird 'Daniel' would be a mess)...

What do you all think?

Anyone else have a Challenge idea to share?

What about a challenge for men's styles?

1. maybe options to the balding man's "comb over"
2. doing a style for a man who has fallen on hard times and is preparing for job interviews
3. or a new style for a guy as a part of a "makeover"

They did men's styles as a Short Cut challenge last season, although I wouldn't mind seeing another this season.

Children's hair would be another interesting challenge—especially if the kids were really squirmy!

I'd like to see them do my personal challenge. I'm in my mid-50s, but my hair has only just begun to grey and is still mostly medium brown. My skin and features, however, do show my age, so I need to find a balance between my hair color and my facial features.

And I like my greys and don't want my hair dyed! I've actually got a nice, silvery "skunk line" in one side of my bangs and a sprinkling of silver through the main body of my hair.

And to top it all off, my hair is fine and hangs dead straight, I have "Dumbo" ears that must be covered at all times.

My own stylist has done a great job dealing with these issues, but I'd love to see what the cut-testants would do in a similar situation.
