There definitely seems to be a hardcore competitive subtext to their relationship though, which was especially brought out in the last challenge. Maybe Jay and Austin never really got to know one another, because Austin was too good to go out with everyone, and there is no time to chat during the challenges. But if I were Jay, I could see why he staywed away from him. My head would explode if I was exposed to Austin Scarlett, the Oregonian "New Yorker", for that long.
I like puzzling through the differences between them, since in my opinion they are the two designers with the most highly-developed individual sensibilities. (FAIR WARNING: IF YOU ARE AMONG THOSE AUSTIN FANS WHO ARE UNABLE TO TOLERATE POINTS OF VIEW THAT DO NOT COMPLETELY ECHO YOUR OWN, YOU MAY WISH TO STOP READING NOW.)
Jay can be mightily irritating upon occasion (the Jesus shtick), but also seems witty, not full of himself (indeed, he often pokes fun of himself in a self-deprecating way), and comfortable in his own skin.
Austin is very conscious of his image and self-presentation. He engages in a great deal of self-fashioning, from his appearance to his demeanor. He strikes me as quite vain and intolerant of criticism.
Jay, while acerbic and sarcasatic, never badmouths other designers, ever.
Austin badmouths Wendy regularly now, but despite his woundedness over Wendy's critique of his leadership, when given the chance to do something more than complain about her, he helped get rid of Vanessa instead. She was, after all, the more talented rival.
Jay does not always seem to be taking the competition all that seriously. He can get stressed out during the design process, but he also tends to say the first thing that pops into his head (booster seat???) on the runway. As many have pointed out, he seems uncomfortable in crowds of "beautiful people" and does not do a good job of "selling himself."
Austin is the consummate self-salesman, and he is definitely in this to win. Aside from the Vanessa incident, there's the strategy he described in ep6: "I had heard that Richard was a man's man, you know, that he likes the ladies," so Austin made sure Melissa's butt was about four inches from the guy's face.
Jay's designs convey an image to me that is sexy, self-confident, and accomplished. I picture a woman in his designs who is smart and doesn't try to hide it; who is sexy and confident about it; and who is comfortable acting in the world. His designs enhance the wearer without taking over her whole image.
Austin's retro designs also suggest a retro femininity to me. They evoke a world of frilly garden parties and "Father Knows Best" families. His woman appears to be childlike and ornamental, rather than confident and accomplished in her own right. Lastly, the designs are so "strong" that they seem likely to overtake the entire image the woman wearing them presents, rather than enhacing her own unique presence.
Lastly, I think Jay probably works best in some sort of collaborative atmosphere -- working to a theme or a client -- rather than entirely on his own.
Austin, by contrast, works best when he is entirely in control of the process, from start to finish. His collaborative designs usually don't work.

Well.. I just wanted to throw out the fact that Austin, Robert, and Jay are my faves. Kara's always been my favorite female. I think Robert's great... I just love his personality and think he's adorable! Austin and Jay are fabulous... they always make me smile and Jay is so funny. Austin's designs are always great (minus the wedding dress) and usually wearable even if you're not a stick-figure. I love how Robert (for the bathing suit challenge) wanted to have his suit fit a size 12. Love him! Thanks for reading!

My humble opinion of who’s left after 1-19:
Jay – My favorite because he doesn’t kiss butt and he’s innovative and rises to the challenge. His Chrysler building inspired dress was so wonderful even though it wasn’t “him”. And I think his swimsuit ROCKED! I think his business sense sucks but he carries himself a little like Alexander McQueen or Galliano – he doesn’t have to care what you think. And I think that’s exactly what a designer should do!
Austin – Although a very talented designer and seamster, his prissyness irritates me to the point of not enjoying his designs as much as possible. He plays the SCHMOOZWAZEE perfectly though and I think he will win because of it. But most of the time he’s like a fashion Madonna – very derivative of all that’s been done before, but markets himself with OVERT drama. His swimsuit sellout was disgusting, but it worked, dinit?
Kara – Is GREAT! – classic yet innovative, sews fantastically, understands the business very realistically. If true talent is served she deserves to win, but alas how often in this silly world does that happen? She’s too good for her own good.
Wendy – I think she’s very gifted but she has too much difficulty with time restrictions. She seems very concerned with quality as was evident with her party dress. Given time she would create amazing things, but in this fast food mentality, turn it on a dime world, she’s probably doomed. I would love to see her gain a clientele of very rich women who can afford haute couture and understand classic lines. I also love the fact that she looks like a technician rather than a model. She’s an Edith Head for today.
Robert – A likeable, straight Tom Ford. I think he loves women almost as he much as he loves himself, but he does seem genuinely friendly. I also think that he’s been extremely lucky to still be there because, as a designer, not.
Kevin – He doesn’t impress me in any way. His manner is milquetoast, and his designs are boring. I especially hated his design for the Sarah, the cough cough, try not to gag, “Rockstar” But I guess that’s what you get when your client is Madonna, Pink and Cindy Lauper rolled into one. sad.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. I LOVE AUSTIN SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!
ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE HIM IS JUST JEALOUS, JEALOUS, JEALOUS!!! His banana republic dress was so gorgeous and the judges are STUPID for not letting him win. What about when they said the theme was "your grandmothers closet". SEE the judges were wrong and he should have won. And wasn't his swimsuit beautiful. OH MY GOD!!! I wish I could wear it. Stupid Jay only knows how to do punk S&M things, and icky Kevin's didn't even look like a swimsuit! OMG WENDY IS SO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEAN!!! He desearves to win and he is the only good designer on the show, but the stupid producers and judges are trying SABOTAGE him. That's right. That's why he hasn't won EVERY challenge, but even they couldn't deny how great his bathing suit was. Austin 4EVER!!!
I you can't tell I'm being sacarstic. If you want to flame me go ahead.
Oh, it's a shame I agreed with ALMOST everything you said... (I wasn't sure about the "icky" punk S&M thing, thought I was disgusted by the swimsuit) and I've liked Kevin's designs for the most part. But you're right, Wendy is mean.
Besides that, you got my feelings right on! Now about it being sarcastic...
Umm...okay. To be completely honest the fact that you agreed with ALMOST everything I said...scares me a little. This post was a joke. I was trying to humorously parody a lot of Pro-Austin post I'd seen that I thought were going way to far in the direction of "Austin is thy God, he can do no wrong". Now I'm not saying ALL Pro-Austin post are like that, so nobody go getting offended. But the thing is I didn't even suceeded in making a good parody because I realised that my parody too much resembled an actual post.
For the record I didn't like Austin's Banana republic dress. I knew from the second he picked out his fabric that he wasn't going to win and I was bracing myself for the worst. However the dress did come out a lot better than I thought it would. But I still didn't like it. When I read Tim's comment about the english drawing room I realised why I didn't like the fabric, it reminded me of wallpaper.
I do like Austin though. I think his designs are some of the strongest on the show and his petty breakdowns and gayer-than-thou personality make me smile. I just don't turn into a blinders-wearing psycho when it comes time to defend him.
And I don't think Kevin is "icky", I like him quite a bit.
Jay's bathing suit dissapointed me a little because I thought he could do a lot better, but it was bad or disgusting. I don't think it would have been as S&M-like if had been a different color instead of black. Somehow I can picture that suit looking great in lime or emerald green.
As for Wendy, well let's not talk about Wendy shall we.

This is exactly why I like Austin. He is so fey and twee I can't help but be amused by him. Others see his preening as vanity and arrogance, but I see it as an endearing personality quirk. (Loved how he had his hair and makeup done by the Loreal people just like the models in episode 6. It was almost as if he were putting on his war paint before the judging session.)
Quote:
Jay, while acerbic and sarcasatic, never badmouths other designers, ever.
This is untrue. Jay badmouthed Austin in episode 6, calling his behavior in front of Richard Johnson "gross." Jay also claimed that if he were to win, it was because he was being natural and funny and not "whoring" himself like Austin and Melissa.
Quote:
Austin badmouths Wendy regularly now.
Wendy also regularly badmouths Austin and completely deserves the snipes, especially after she told Julia her teal wedding dress was beautiful (a bald-faced lie) while commenting to the camera she thinks Austin only works on "one frequency" and that the dress "didn't work."
Quote:
Jay does not always seem to be taking the competition all that seriously.
Like Austin, I think Jay has a strong competitive streak and takes the competition *very* seriously. (If I recall correctly, he commented he wanted to "win this [expletive deleted]" in either episode 3 or 4.) I saw Jay as being partially put off by Austin's behavior with Richard Johnson because he perceived Austin as being his number one competition.

I don't necessarily agree with this entirely. I see Austin's designs as a reflection of his desire to make women look beautiful and romantic, not necessarily weak, frilly, and ornamental. If Austin were a woman, I think he would wear his designs and feel glorious in it. (His personal dress seems to support the veracity of this statement.)
As for Jay's designs, I like what he is able to produce when he is challenged and steps outside of his rock-and-roll idiom. When Jay is not challenged, his clothes (e.g., his envy outift) look like they are made for the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne. (Sorry Jay fans, don't be too insulted.)

This is where I completely agree with you!
Anyway, it was fun reading your take on Jay and Austin, who I think are the breakout stars of PR.

Hum, I was wondering if anybody noticed that it's been 2 weeks now that Kevin's designs are not at the auction... Well, OK, the wedding gown had no lining, and he had to quickly put the swimming suit back together, but still, I think it's funny that they're not on auction. Anybody with some deep insight ?

Yes, I concede that he said these things. I should have said that he doesn't badmouth their skills and design philosophies, as Austin now does with Wendy, and as Wendy did with Austin's wedding dress as well. I guess Jay's comments about the party also rang true with me as a pretty fair observation, at least in terms of what we were shown. I liked Austin's suit (his best design thus far), but I also think Melissa's Lolita act clinched the deal that night.
(Actually -- tangent here -- I thought that piggy columnist's face lit up with a repulsive, feral glint when he heard Melissa was 16. When he asks, "Is it true that you're just 16 years old?" the look on his face is extremely disturbing. I got the feeling that hearing her age made him want her more, not less.)

I can't figure out this part of Jay. I agree that he seems to be quite competitive during the production phase, but then he blows it when it comes to follow-through. That idiotic quip about the booster seat seemed like it was designed to show exactly how little he cares about this! Sort of an in-your-face gesture, don't you think? I was totally flummoxed by that -- wanted to throttle him, actually!
Lastly, I completely agree that the "pure" Jay is considerably less appealing than the "collaborative" Jay. The envy outfit was okay, but nothing special, and I once browsed his website and found it less-than-compelling. I was so surprised when, from the BR challenge onward, he started producing such refined work.

Does anyone know on which week Betsy Johnson will be a judge? I may be mistaken, but judging from the previews, I don't think she liked Austin's design very much. He's still my favorite.
I do think it's high time that Jay won a challenge! Maybe this week?

I strongly agree with chicksinga
Jay- I like, the only one with creative talent, which is what a designer needs, I admit HATE his 2055 speal he uses- it is weak but funny
Austin-just a costume designer- it works for him b/c everything he does is ripped off including his image (YSL), also his only truly original design was his wedding dress which did not work mainly b/c he interpret the colors his model wanted in a creative way to make it work
Kara-I like, the one with most tech skills, but not very hit or miss-her swim suit was something you would see on QVC,
Wendy-umm…a very simple southern designer- not the high fashion quality
Robert- neutral, nothing really has impressed me with him
Kevin- not a stand-alone designer, his designs are not bad but I feel they miss the mark most of the time

I think Kevin is always focused and not about the drama. He seems to focus on the design which is what a designer SHOULD do. The others seem to only want their time on camera. In addition, Kevin's designs are something most women in America would love to wear. I hear he is having his own show during Fashion Week...I think it will be a must see!

Just finished re-watching the swim suit episode, did anyone else catch the Freudian slip by the PG 6 perv? Fast cars/fashion model when he talked to Robert? All I ever remembering Robert comparing is classic sports car/women..even in his vid…
Also found it funny he came out on Jay for being Flamboyant…instead of Austin (a lot has to do with his natural personality but he WAS over the top at the party)…wonder if he actually got something other than a “view” at the party….

I completely understood it was sarcastic from the start, but you're right on the part of it being a little too realistic (There are some people here that have fun with the exclamation mark button). Austin can get a little annoying - i.e. the flirty flamboyant dancing at the club - but all in all I love his personality and his style more than any of the other designers. And I suppose Austin fans are just that way because they're flamboyant like him.
Jay's suit in emerald green is an interesting concept; I don't think it was the color that made it S&M but the material. If it wasn't so leather-cheap looking, I could see something definitely going for that suit. But then again, that's why I'm an Austin fan - his sense of fabric and texture is always terrific.
I take any critical analysis of Austin's work seriously and I don't wear blinders as some supposedly do. Take for instance, his wedding dress, I wouldn't wear it, but I don't think it's nice of Heidi Klum and her judges to give the designers an assignment that it didn't have to be traditional, and then tell him it wasn't traditional enough. They do that in almost every episode to someone, and that's what makes me think there is more to it than just the judges.

Austin is really bothering me...a lot. I could deal with his flamboyance but I have no tolerance for drama queens.
Jay does have origionality, but I think his 2055 theme of the future could only last for a season or two if he was on his own.
So far, it seems that most of the eliminated have really shot themselves in the foot. Alex and Vanessa especially, but I still think that Wendy should have been eliminated because of the incompleteness of the outfit. She cant make a thong? A swimsuit? Why the hell would she state that?
P.S. Melissa and Jenny are so endearing.

I think one thing everyone's forgetting is that this show has to make money (i.e. keep an audience every week). Why do you think Austin has been at the bottom two for 2 or 3 episodes yet always makes it in. Another poster noted that there might be more to this than the judges. Exactly! How boring would this show be if the big personalities were knocked off in the first few episodes?
While the designs certainly matter, I think personalities play in the close decisions.

in my own opinion there are only two types of designers that survive the game. the first type is one who's borned with talent and appears confidant and outgoing in front of the judges (austin, jay), the second type, works their ass off, appears friendly and sincere to the judges. (ie robert, wendy)
if your design is about average yet you act cocky about it, chances are you r gonna get eliminated. being a beautiful girl and strong won't really help either, unfortunately. these just randomly pops out my mind.

Final three: Austin, Kara, Jay. I mean, I wish it wouldn't be Jay--I really think his clothes are trashy and juvenile--but the others (Robert in particular) are just going to get overlooked, I think. Wendy's totally out soon. This week, maybe. Or Kevin, this week. Though I will be sad to see him go... he's got such a non-bitchy personality. But it's inevitable, he's way out of his league.

I happen to watch Project Runway at home with some crazy Austin people, but also with some crazy Jay people, and some crazy Nora people. I hang out with a lot with a lot of psycho's, but the Austin people are the most passionate.
And yeah, I not saying Austin isn't a great designer. But, seriously, his BR dress wasn't that great and even if it was it still shouldn't have won because it was completely the wrong season(yeah, sure "winter floral", whatever).
With Jay's suit, I didn't mean that it being a different color would have made it not look S&M, but it wouldn't have looked as S&M.
But you made some really good points. Thanks!

I can see more for Avril Lavigne. She has a genuine thing (well besides Tripp pants) going on but Ashlee? Oh, god, PURGE! That pink "punk" tank top in her Pieces of Me video was enough to make me look away and never turn back.
When I first saw the Pieces Of Me video and her wearing that top I burst out laughing and didn't stop until the video was long over. The funniest thing though is how people say Ashlee is the more "rock" sister, while Jessica is the "pop" sister. And I'm like "what exactly makes Ashlee more "rock", that she dyed her hair brown"?
I forget who, but someone posted that Jay's clothes reminded them of Hot Topic and then I remembered that when I was watching episode 3 that Starr's(remember Starr, wasn't that, like, ages ago) Banana Republic dress looked more like something you would buy from Hot Topic and from Banana republic.
Now, jay fans, don't get mad at me for this, but I think he could design for Paris Hilton. I mean, not all of his designs look like something Paris Hilton would wear, but his tin foil dress in ep 1 and his bathing suit. Or, hey didn't Tim say about his BR dress that it was very "Gwen Stefani".

I'm new to this board, but a addict to the show! In that vein, if Wendy were to somehow win this show I would be devastated. Her designs have never been exceptional or inspired. I feel that her win in the BR challenge was based on how easy it would be to manufacture her dress. My favs of course, are Jay and Austin. I think I would like Austin to dress me and Jay to hang out with me ! They are both larger than life and isn't that what the fashion industry is all about? Kara, while seeming to be a lovely, talented woman, seems to be a bit boring, her clothes having a sameness to them. Robert is cute, personable but I'd be shocked if he ended up in the final three. My last choice, obviously is Kevin. I think he has the experience and could easily surprise everyone. But at the end of the day, I do think it's going to be Austin, Jay and Kara. Thanks for all the fun reading !

in my own opinion there are only two types of designers that survive the game. the first type is one who's borned with talent and appears confidant and outgoing in front of the judges (austin, jay), the second type, works their ass off, appears friendly and sincere to the judges. (ie robert, wendy)
if your design is about average yet you act cocky about it, chances are you r gonna get eliminated. being a beautiful girl and strong won't really help either, unfortunately. these just randomly pops out my mind.
Makes perfect sense to me.

Welcome to the board. I'm pretty new here myself, but I've been watching Project Runway since it started. I've never been so happy to not be able to fall asleep, or else I wouldn't have been channel surfing at midnight and caught the re-broadcast of ep 1. Everyone here seems to agree that Austin, Jay, and Kara are the final three. You probably won't have to worry about Wendy, Kevin, or Robert. But they might surprise us, we'll see.

Oh, I just remembered to sign that petition, stopashlee.com. Have you ever seen her show? She is picky, prissy, and disrespectful. She cares only about herself - I feel horrible for the people who worked so hard to make the strings in her song "Shadow" perfect and then when she is invited to listen to them, she sits and fiddles with her bangs, talking about how she needs to cut them.
She is always saying how she wants to be different from her sister, but she could use some lessons from Jessica. Jessica is sweet, kind, funny and genuine and I don't think of any of those words with "Ashlee Simpson." Avril, on the other hand, was blamed for calling herself "rock" when she never did and it is really Ashlee that needs to be blamed.
Starr's dress - yeah, who's she again? jk - looked like something from Hot Topic, something that I would NEVER wear. That pink and black thing was done two years ago, it's old, it's ugly, forget it. I am a big Gwen Stefani fan, though, and Jay's envy outfit would TOTALLY fit in with the black, red and white colors of "Rock Steady" -i.e. Hey Baby and Underneath it All

actually starr's dress was more redish and black than pink and black. but she must have been pretty stupid to pick colors from opposing sides of the room.

Oh yeah, forgot about the thing. It was just that the style of his tin foil dress looked like the dresses that are really popular right now that Paris Hilton alway's goes around in. I don't know what the style is called, but it's the kind that Alexandra has on in her profile. I don't think the BR dress is Paris at all though, it is way too classy.

I wonder if bravo will have a second season with new designers. what i'd like to see is a spin-off starring jay....his personality and the comments he makes are just priceless!!! i think he's really charismatic. i like austin, too, but he has this weird look in his eyes. it really seems like austin lives in his own world in his head, he is like a creature from another planet. he's very talented, but very very very very ODD.

So sad to see Alexandra go. I think this was a seriously wrong evaluation of her work and ability.
Her Banana Republic and Wedding Dress were simply amazing wearable and marketable creations and to a broad age range of woman. I do not feel this way about any of the other designers with the exception of Kara.
Austin's talents are best utilized in theatre.
I will so miss being able to see Alexandras collection.
So if you're reading these posts.."Don't be discouraged..use this dissapointment to drive you. You're the real winner here. Anyone who designs can see this instantly".
IMHO.

Good point. If I hadn't heard them say that or that upcoming rock star's speech, I would have thought Austin was way off-the-way. Given I did hear what was said, I understood that he went with the comment and they did not mean it at least as far as how Austin thought they did. The colors Austin chose in that "rock star" challenge were Alice in Wonderland, and the woman endorsed that "take." She didn't say Bride of Frankenstein. Maybe Austin should have given her his wedding dress design instead...lol.

I should add this here: the Fashion Institute of Technology is in NYC, so Austin may consider himself now a NY'er. Those who say he lied should reconsider.

The Auction pages on this website don't always show all auction info. I wanted to calcualte whose designs are most in demand going by average high bid. But each time I go on, some episode or other's designs are absent.
Anyway, it seems based on casual observation that Jay's designs on the average are fetching the highest prices. Kara, if I recall correctly received the highest bid of any individual design - for her wedding dress. Last time I checked it was just shy of $1000.00. What's it all mean? Does it mean they're the "best"? In the real world, the busniess world, the answer must be yes.

If they do, it will never be the same! I've grown attached to these characters. All of them.
My pic for the last three: Jay, Kara & Wendy (I think Wendy stands the best chance for two reasons; Banana Republic, she may be the easiest to mold in their ways and she is considered the "longshot" according to the Project Runway site). Of course, if Austin stays hooked up with Melissa, all bets are off!!
