That is laughable. I'm glad no one seemed to react positively to her at FW, too. When did Haute Couture become "farty"?

Valentino,Oscar and Bill Blas r my favorite designers although i could not afford them. Sara, Jay and Austin r my fav's on the show but Wendy won over Austin... I THINK NOT!!!! she is the REAL Cruella de ville
oscar
I love Jay's stuff - because I like futuristic stylings - - and I like texture and mixed fabrics.

Why go where you've already been????

So - in reality I choose individual items from different designers.

But I do prefer the young new designers - over traditional classic.

If I were to go with a classic designer - it would be Caroline Herrera. Her stuff is safe but feminine classic.
georgiawoman1953
Wendy is the original Cruella De Ville and winning over Austin is SCANDALOUS LUDICROUS and just plain IDIOTIC i am so MAD i love him

No, not at all! I just thought it would be interesting to see whether there was a similarity of lines between the favorites or if it's more a matter of personalities.

Of the final four, I'm betting Kara will win. I thought Wendy and Jay were pretty even in their showings -- what was up with the headphones/ear muffs on all of Jay's models. I'm guessing that's his "signature?"
All three had great outfits that fit in with Fashion Week.

I like Austin, he's a great designer, but he seems to be stuck in costuming instead of design normal (alright relatively normal <g>) clothes like the rest of them. If he's the one cut, that's probably why. I can't help but feeling he was in the wrong contest -- if it was something for costuming (which is a tough field to break in Hollywood) he'd have won.
RGRRGR
You know what I think would be a great in your face idea to all you guys lambasting the manner in which BRAVO chose to air this show and it overlapping with Fashion Week? I would have my three top designers create their lines (as per the game) and then have those three colaborate on a fourth line said to be attributed to the fourth designer, thereby giving no official credence to that designer. But alas, these are the mere rants of a reality show junky hopped up on the drug of manipulation and backstabing!

Iowahousewife, the fashion mecca of Manhattan is a store called Century 21, downtown, literally across the street from Ground Zero. A discount department store with top, top designers all marked down. Get there at the right time of year, during a further sale, and you can score big. Other times of year, C21 can still be fairly expensive for the really top-design clothes (even at 70% off, that stuff costs a pretty penny), but it's worth it just to go and look at the stuff, peer at the construction, and feel the fabric. High design is not only unique and beautiful, but exquisitely made.

Thank you so much, paillette! I have a running list of places to go in the city from watching Queer Eye & What Not to Wear, but most are furniture stores, etc... Over Xmas, my sister in law introduced me to Loehmanns? and their backroom. Got some fab LaCroix jeans, but a lot of the stuff I have to say "Where in the heck would a SAH Mom in IA wear this?" Then again - sometimes I have to say - "What the heck!" and endure the stares from wrangler wearing parents at my sons t-ball game. I will definately check out Century 21 - is that the only locale? People are legitimately pissed - and if you think it's bad not, just wait and see if Austin, Jay, or Kara is eliminated over Wendy and you're going to hear enough negativity about Wendy to make Stalin look like an arch-angel.

Me, I'm hearing too many conflicting stories and my tummy is churning from it all - so I have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, if she's in, I'm going to be one of the head freshman/ sophomores/ juniors/ seniors.

here's a new one all: from the Washington Post about new designers (only this part refers to PR):

Perhaps the most famous unknowns of the week are the designers from the Bravo series "Project Runway." They have been vying for a $100,000 prize and a Banana Republic mentorship. The show taped its finale Friday morning, with four designers presenting collections. One designer was a red herring; there are only three finalists. An educated guess would have Jay McCarroll, Kara Saun and Wendy Pepper in the runway showdown. One must assume that Austin Scarlett will be eliminated, unless the judges decide that dressing women like a drag version of Mae West is a commercially viable idea.

Pepper, for those who have been following the dressmaking drama, continues to struggle with a dowdy sensibility. Saun's work, inspired by "The Aviator," is remarkably detailed but often too self-conscious. McCarroll mixes musical inspiration into a pastiche of colors and textures to create the strongest blend of originality, salesmanship and aesthetic coherence. It is also hard not to find perverse amusement in the fact that McCarroll worked for about two years in the porn industry, an experience that seems to have given him a unique advantage in stirring up the kind of sexual provocation on which the fashion industry thrives.

I love that quote, that pretty much sums up my feelings for Austin's designs. Thanks for uncovering this tasty morsel.

By Lauren David Peden

What was your inspiration for this season's collection?
There are many. Usually I am inspired by music anyway, but this season it is all about how we are classified or stereotyped by the type of music we listen to. People that listen to the Sex Pistols are a very different breed than those who listen to say...Yanni...or the Grateful Dead or Madonna. I am using music as a common thread to hold a very stylistically different collection together. Also, I am using the idea of wearing headphones to block out the world — to truly become individual — as a theme, as well. PS: I have been pigeonholed as a rock and roll kind of guy when in reality I am much more of an electronica fan.

What type of colors, fabrics and embellishments can we expect?
The colors are kind of an optimistic fall palette. It’s moody but still fresh and fun. I am using a lot of metallics, and some spring tones of aqua, citron, and lavender. I figure people should wear whatever colors they want when they want to. Who the [censored] are we to decide what is important for a particular span of time? For fabrics I am using tons of stuff: sequined, microfiber, wool, fur, leather, satin, denim, corduroy, knits. I like to mix it all up. As far as embellishments, there is some beading and a lot of quilting and piecing, colorblocking and my signature geometric appliqués.

What do you predict (or hope) will be the big trends for Fall 2005?
Lumberjack style and nostalgia will be huge, although I hope it would be futurism and DIY.

What trends are you sick of or glad to see go?
Midriffs. I am going to single-handedly start the "fat revolution.”

What other designers' show are you most looking forward to?
Undercover by Jun Takahashi because he is the only one I care about right now. As for New York, I don’t really follow that [censored]. Heatherette perhaps. Definitely not Imitation of Christ or Zac Posen. Way too much ego involved there.

What would you be doing for a living if you weren't a designer?
Hot dog vendor.

What's the first thing you'll do if you win Project Runway?
Cackle.

I'm being honest. I hate her actions but that's no reason to lie about her clothes. I thought the wedding dress she made was beautiful - loved it...still can't stand the woman! Her other outfits? Sucked! Even her BR dress - seen it before. Look at Jackie O's pics from history. It wasn't new and if that is the kind of overpriced fashion BR likes to sell, then I'm glad I can't afford to shop there!

What exactly is new anymore?

What I saw from Austin was new even if they were period pieces. What I saw from Jay was new, Kara - new, Nora - new, Kevin - new. I'm no fashionista but I see what's out there and I know what I like and I didn't like anything she did except that wedding dress.

I agree.
Everything jay did looked new. same with kara.
and although austin's stuff is period or costumey or whatever, at least he creates something you know you've never seen before. it's not my stuff, but at least it's clothing you want to look at.

sure, wendy's wedding dress looked OK (although I don't know how many people would truly wear red lacing down the aisle, looked more like a prom dress to me) the problem I had wiht wendy's wedding dress is, it's just like all the other crap on her website.
I.E. it is not new.
asymmetrical lines, lacing.
just like the swim suit.
just like half the prom dresses on her website.
she seems to be a one-note dressmaker. until she shows that she's capable of actually creating something, i don't think i can call her a designer.
lisakaz
Of course, that show has nothing to do with the cut down to 3, so there is a flaw in the writer's thinking. I have a feeling that, if Austin was the add-on, he didn't try too too much, in that his collection "didn't count." Someone claimed one dress was very much like something in his portfolio. If he's got another job lined up, he also may have not cared to try. I hope he does. I want to know how I can be me an Austin design!

lk
Dalloway
I personally never ranted that Wendy was out of date. And I've not really been part of any major Pepper Bashing. (See my previous posts.) Too much Pepper makes me sneeze. Anyway, I'm semi-retired and living in Florida, where we have little use for clothing of any kind other than shorts, swimsuits, tank tops, t-shirts, and sandals -- and since I wasn't invited to the Trump wedding...

So all's I know about fashion these days is what I see on the red carpets of the endless stream of awards shows this time of year. Who designed Teri Hatcher's dress for the Golden Globes again? I liked that. And though I don't like her much as an actress, Renee Zellwegger always looks good in the Carolina Herrera dresses she's partial to. Is that modern enuf for ya? The Stella McCartney things I've seen, well, they're a little outre for my old-fashioned sensibilties, I guess.

LOL!!!! That's even more twisted than the train on Austin's wedding dress!

Speaking of Austin, everyone, like the majority of the posters, I am a big fan of his work. People have asked in the past if he has a website like some of the other designers. Does anyone know if one exists, and if so what is the address? thanks in advance for any leads.....

I love Vera Wang as well - not on myself (obviously) but to look at. I actually bought a Vera Wang Barbie doll on eBay a few years back. The doll is wearing this beautiful ivory satin gown with illusion sleeves and black velvet piping on the cuffs, sleeves and train. . . I know, I'm a dork.

If I had a million bucks I would wear Armani and Donna Karan. I'm also a fan of Isaac Mizrahi. Safe, I know. When I was 20 I interned with Marc Jacobs (he was with Perry Ellis at the time) and I thought that 'safe designers' were SO boring. But as I've gotten older, my tastes have changed a lot. I see a lot of the 'new designers' and can enjoy and appreciate their artistry but that doesn't mean I would wear their clothes.

Another thing that's interesting - what you see on the runway is rarely what 'ships' for most of these designers. They may be showing micro-minis and sheer tops on the runway, but when the buyers come in (from Bergdorf's or Neiman Marcus or wherever. . .) they emphasize that "oh, this skirt will ship 6 inches longer!" or "yes, we'll be putting an opaque tank under that!" As much as anything, the runway shows get attention for the brand and the designer.

Thanks for the Jay interview, Angeedee! I find it interesting that he most wants to see Jun Takahashi's work. Undercover recently caught my eye, too: Exciting new designer!

I agree with Oscar that it might be nice to move away from repeating the same laments, with which nearly everyone agrees, and try to move to a new discussion.

Hey, speaking of Target & Mizrahi: did anyone out there get to H & M in NYC when the Karl Lagerfeld clothes were there last Fall? Were they nicely produced? I no longer live in The City, so I was unable to check it out.
sassychic
Don't think your a dork for buying it. You liked it and how can one not like a Vera Wang design even on a barbie?
DeViL44
Just a question...

I know you guys hate Wendy, and most of her designs, but have you seen her designs in her video on her website wendypepper.com? I loved it, and the designs in that video were outstanding and just so gorgous. All the trains, and the elegant silks that dragged along the woman's hips, stomach...and behind her flowed so beautifully. I love the fabric prints too, and the color coordination she uses in all her designs. I know you uys have said you disliked her designs on her website PHOTO'S...but whats so terrible about them? Just wondering. The ones in her video are better, but the pictures are also pretty neat designs. Her wedding dress in her homepage "enter" is excellent, and I like most of her designs...even the Huate Couture ones.
deedee7
i love target too, and they have cheapy clothes by big-name designers, like a couple of pairs of isaac mizrahi pants by target that i bought, that i wear to work all the time
