Hmmm, this is so intriguing, the show and the responses. I think it's important to remember it's TV. Robert, Jay and Austin have staying power because they are good tv. Robert is very attractive, Jay is crazy and Austin is very queer eye. Star was good tv as well.
As far as the Banana challenge, I agree with those who think it was chosen because it was easy to manufacture. Austin's was cute and Jays was great but both too hard to manufacture. I also think Wendy's was easy to sell. The little black dress, can wear it for many occasions and many seasons to come. It also fits a number of figures. As we say in theatre, but will it play in Peoria? Not many people will buy Kara's yellow (even tho it looked dynamite on the model) or the white ones or Austin's floral. Banana Republic got some great advertising but were they going to be artistic or commerical? Commercial!

I absolutely LOVE this show! I was so distraught to see Austin crying in the previews for the next show. ARGH! We can't lose Austin!!!

I see the competition coming down between Austin, Nora, Jay and Kara. They have consistently created interesting clothes that are worth looking at and wearing.

Of course, Austin is my absolute FAVORITE. I couldn't believe that he didn't win the Banana Republic challenge. Granted, I don't shop there -- they don't stock plus-size clothes, don't get me started on that -- but his dress was a PARTY dress! It was pretty and I'd wear it in a heartbeat if it suited me. It flowed beautifully on the model and the cut is one that would suit the majority of women. Who wouldn't wear it????

Jay's dress was gorgeous, too, although I would have liked it better without the belt, with the bodice more reminiscent of a corset, with the skirt originating beneath it. But that's just me -- I love bodices and corsets.

I'm really hoping, though, that some upcoming episodes will feature men's clothing. The first three challenges have been for women's wear, and generally evening outfits at that. I'd like to see what this group can do with casual clothes and menswear.

I disagree, actually. I think the biggest problem with Wendy's dress *was* the color. The shape will be difficult for women with even average-sized hips, breasts and thighs to wear, because it was an unforgiving tube that clung to the body. (Heck, I don't think it fit the model very well, either -- much to constricting.) But to have the whole dress in a dark color, even the very cute capelet, just made it look very flat. The only way I'd feel good in that dress was if I had a perfect body (which I don't). And I think all that black (or navy, as the case may be) would be VERY hard to pull off. It was unrelenting and unattractive -- very overwhelming. The dress was wearing the model -- the model wasn't wearing the dress.

Riiiiiiiiiiight..

Like I said, Wendy's dress looked like a funeral dress and her model looked like a dracula. I agree that Starr/Robert were the bottom 2, but a funeral dress from BR? God..

Okay I'll give you the figure issue. But you really think all black is considered hard to wear? Someone wrote an entire coffee table book about the little black dress a few years ago. That cable fashion show (sorry the name escapes me) that does a top ten list considered the little black dress to be one of the most popular fashion icons. Percentage wise department stores carry more black dresses. I think many people feel that black is safe.
When Banana Republic reproduced Wendy's dress, it would be interesting to know if they made modifications to it so it would correspond with the cut of the clothing they already sell. It would also be interesting to know how well it sells.
I don't have a perfect figure either which is why I don't shop at Banana Republic. Austin's is the only one I could have pulled off. It would have hidden my tush, boosted my bust and accentuated the only asset my figure has left, the waist!

I dont know why are we getting into sexual orientation when We are not discussing about sexual orientation, because thats Justin matter, we are discussing about another thing:work and abilities. I think Justin is a very good designer, in my opinion one of the best. I dont care if somebody is tired of the homosexual designer, he is good, maybe the best, and thats the only thing is important for winning this competition

Hi! I had Austin in my class at high school. (I was his teacher) I am teaching fashion courses now and would also love to get in touch with him to be a guest speaker. We are so proud of him !!
jescci
That was the one problem with Austin's design - he ignored or didn't "get" the Banana Republic style.

Don't know what happens to each desinger's dress. Maybe they should auction them for charity. Gotta believe Austin's stuff would fetch a pretty penny - because that guy's gonna be BIG someday soon.

Just gonna say that the preview at the end of this weeks show didn't say that it was a preview of the next episode. It said something like..."Coming this season on Project Runway". Just wanted to clarify that in case we all are tuned in next week to see Austin Cry.haha

By the way, I'm having issues with that second episode. Something is just not right about those dyeing processes. You can NEVER get those intense colors with RIT dye, not even on cotton jersey. I still get the feeling that we're not really seeing the full story when it comes to the production of these garments.
PenguinBelly
I just found out that Austin is among 6 finalists. This is a fact so some of you Austin's fans (or haters), well, sorry for a spoiler.

Another issue, although this is my pure speculation, would Wendy possibly be a fake contestant? This show's copied just about every other reality show today, so why not have a double agent and play a little, dirty game? Here are a few things I base my suspiscion on.

1. Her interview sounds transcripted. She says weird provocative things and shows no inhibition whatsoever. (her age, talent, and strategy, etc.)

2. She seems like acting in the interviews, and she gets disproportionate amount of interview time on air. It was truly disturbing to see her trying to squeeze a tear drop when she won the Banana Challenge.

3. She's the only one with a website and enthusiatically advertise the Project Runway, every week.

4. She's the most quoted contestant in other media for some reason. (newspapers, magazines, etc.) I don't know why it has to be her.

5. She's the winner in Episode 3 with her dracula costume, after her horrible presentations in Episode 1 & 2. It really makes me think this show is, well, a "show", and Wendy is just there to make it even more dramatic.

Like I said, Wendy part is my imaginary thought, but Austin part is the truth.

How do you know who would be in the top six....and claim this to be 'fact'! I too doubt Austin will be eliminated any time soon, but would never claim it to be fact unless I was personaly involved with the show. If this is the case, I am sure it is against policies to divulge this information. Again, I am not doubting your statement as a prediction....just your statement as fact.

***********************************************

As for your prediction as "Wendy the Spy", it would be fun to see. If this is true I hope (they) do not keep her around for the entire duration of the show (ie: Manhunt). I hope her new 'strategy' is genuine, it seems to be working better than manipulation and backstabbing. Thank you Kara for giving Wendy some confidence, she was on her way out the door with that attitude!
rufusblue
Well that's good news about Austin, if that is indeed the truth. Although I figured he would be in the top three regardless. I kinda doubt that Wendy is a plant. She's basically like the non traditional student in college. The ones that ask the most questions and talk the most to the teacher. It has to do with age. And she has more to her story and when you create a show like this you have to find a focal point and work around that. I feel the producers like her story and are editing things around that to bring some interest and drama to the competition. Nothing more, nothing less.

For instance Alexandra is pretty and talented but you know she is as about as interesting as her flat ironed hair. At least that's how they are presenting her on the show. And that's to be expected cause at the end of the day that's what this is...a show. It's edited by the producers to create an entertaining production. I tend to watch these shows over and over as background noise and I've just seen so many quick edits in responses, you just know more has been said about the garments by the judges and I don't believe the responses from the designers are as vague as what they show us.

Another example of editing...I truly don't believe Tim was in the room when Sara was mock fighting with Nora and throwing her into the trash. They just edited it to make it look like he was walking in at that exact moment to give an illusion that they might get into trouble or look unprofessional. Just that kinda typical stuff that is found in "reality" shows now.
dimsumfactory
this idea just came up to my mind that. How much was the budget of this lovely show?
think about it, i wonder if the designers are paid to be on TV becoz !!here u go:
1, Designers do not get a job just becoz they were selected in project runway.
2, they get kicked off everyweek...they are insulted in front of America! Doesnt matter u are good or bad, no one desere that witout $.
3. Parsons school of Art got to be advertised that they have this "professional studio" for bravo..
4 People will be curious how Wendy's dress would really look like so eveyone will go to Banana and somehow u will spend some $ in the store, may not be Wendy's dress though
5look at all the tshirts and stuff that are selling in bravo's web? are they really designed by the young designers??
6 Does Bravo pays for everything? for instance, did bravo pay for their drinks when they went out to the bar?? renting an apt for relaity show for big companies wouldnt be a big budget especially we see all of them are sharing rooms, like dorm rooms!!!how much would that cost the TV station?
7 for me, after all, it would be "an experience" for them, critiqued by Michael Kors and all those ppl might be good, but persoanlly,i do not like his stuff..too "classic looking" just an expensive version of Banana~
8 so far i do enjoy watching the show and looking forward what kinda challenge they come up with tongue.gif
hope my words didnt offen anyone

I'm with all of the Jay fans - he's the best, but I'm biased - I met him in London several years ago and shared a flat with him and a friend . . . it's so great to get to see him have a shot!!! He totally deserves this and has not only the vision but the work ethic, creativity, and passion and personality to really do this. He has made me laugh so hard over the years and I have consistently been amazed by his work . . . keep watching, he's full of surprises! (wasn't that last dress just amazing?)

Oh, and I love Austin of course, he is not just cute, he's actually beautiful -
However, Kara is really shining as someone who is not only unique but versatile and very very talented. I love her demeanor, she seems very professional and very kind. Vanessa - like her spunk and style. Nora, wonderful, simple, really like her stuff so far. Forget the sexist's name - oh, Robert. Boring, boring, boring, and offensive to women.

I love the show and hope Jay wins the prize . . . . oh, and he doesn't have a store in LA that I know of, not yet any way.

I too told my boyfriend that I was totally in love with Austin. Something about a pretty guy that gets me every time.

Oh well. I wonder if he is even single? He's way to cute to be single.

I too hope Austin rocks the vote on this show. He's cute as a button, and really knows his stuff.

I lived down highschool (albiet class president)being made fun of. Now that I'm a professional, with a grad degree...I look back and see all those people stayed at home, and never moved on. I do not measure myself against those people anymore.

I don't think Austin will either. Big success for him, I just hope he designs some ties for men...or trousers. I would like to benefit from his creative mind as well!!!
PenguinBelly
Well, not to bash Wendy or anything like that, (sorry if it sounds so) just something that I don't really get..

Wendy (and others) keeps bringing her age as something, and reminding of her age - 39 as the oldest. Wasn't Kevin introduced as 43? How is she the oldest then? And Kara is 37. Is 39 such a big deal compared to 37?

My guess is that she's actually not 40 - she doesn't look like 40 at all. More like 50.. or even 60. My mom is pusihg 55 and she looks younger than Wendy.

Indeed I noticed the discrepancies between the contestants' ages mentioned on TV and the ones on the website. (ie. Austin's 23 yrs. old on TV and 26 yrs. old on web.)

Oh well, could this add up to my Wendy conspiracy theory?

penguin
PenguinBelly
Just went to couple contestants' profiles for check-ups, and I found Austin's age was corrected to 23.. But I swear that it was 26 a week ago.

:~)
rufusblue
I noticed this week that Kevin's age had changed when they pop his name up. In the first two episodes it said he was 44 and now it says he's 37. So I guess the 44 was a flub.

ANALEE7- Obviously the reason you never got to know Alexandra is because of your own insecurities or biases... (maybe you should think before you talk bad about other people without even knowing them). I know Alexandra very well and I know all of the things you said are completely UNTRUE. First of all if you knew anything about her you would know that she did not have everything handed down to her. In fact almost everything she wears she made herself, and her own line was started by her working her tail off to make enough money to start her line. Second she is a very sweet girl who stays away from drama and likes people that don’t talk sh*t (since you talk S#it that is probably why she never talked to you). So if you didn’t know her you can not judge her on YOUR preconceived notions and you shouldn’t try to trash her reputation. Anyone that DOES KNOW Alexandra would agree with me when I say that everything you said was false and that Alexandra is an amazing designer and a genuine person with a great heart.
dana
yeah, definitely Austin, Kera and Vanessa. They've been consistent so far and have by far the best designs....
athena24
I soooooo agree! Vanessa is the most talented! So chic and modern. they look so original- it is hard to pin her look down to any other designer. Wendy?- please. Have you seen her clothes on her website? Looks like JCPenney prom dresses. Ew!

I don't think black is hard to wear, per se ... I think that the dress as Wendy made it IN black makes the color hard to wear. The dress is cut with some whimsey in mind (the belt, the capelet), yet the color is SO severe, without any trim or embellishments to play against the color. I would have liked the dress a lot better in that ice blue, or really in any other light color if the whole thing was going to be a solid block of color. I do believe in the power of the little black dress, but in this instance, it seemed to me that the design and the color were at odds.
ninaneal
Well so much for the big discussion on black, it's navy! I read Wendy's description on the website. It's a very dark navy but it certainly didn't translate that way on my computer or tv screen. I wish the judges would give us more comprehensive answers. I think we both agree that several other dresses were better, more dynamic designs. I just have a strong gut feeling they were too complicated or risky for Banana Republic to reproduce. Wouldn't it have been fun if instead of mass marketing a simple black/navy dress they had done fewer and sent them to select stores. Made it kind of a special promotional event. Jay's silver is very holiday and fun. Kara's has great pop because of the color. I know it ranked relatively low but I thought Vanessa's was very fluid and beautiful. But I imagine Banana probably can't mass market a plunging neckline.
These challenges are tough. I personlly think Vanessa and Kevin have a great deal more talent then we are seeing. Who knows what happens when you are pulled out of your comfort zone? When you are expected to work with a fabric or in a style you just don't naturally gravitate to as an artist? I also think the time constraints are effecting some people.
Regardless the show is great fun! I'm enjoying analyzing the show from both an artistic and entertainment standpoint.

I totally agree!!! Hello!!! why is Vanessa being ranked so low with her recent creation! It is absolutley gorgeous!!! I can understand why Austin has been ranked higher than her but Alexandra???? Jay?? whats going on! I think that people are voting on their favourite personalities and not designs!

I really like the show but being an amature designer myself i would like to see more how the designers construct the dresses. I agree with a previous post that some of the dresses look like they were constructed with "trickery". Like Roberts pin stripe outfit and now Wendy's seemingly well constructed dress. I know they can only put so much in an hour long show but still it would be nice to see more of that side as well. Also here is a suggestion for future seasons of PR. For God's sake have Heidi dress up in something more, how should i say... FASHIONABLE! this is a show about Fashion and you are a Model then why not dress like one. I liked it when she wore the purple dress in the 3rd episode, looked good with her skin tone and hair color.
Anywho, i also would like to see a better runway then the one they have on the show now. Looks very dark, gloomy and not well put together. This is not a tent in Bryant park but a TV show. I am sure BRAVO can afford a better set. Some thing like American idol. Something subtle but a bit lively. An all white back ground and set would be Chic like "e" news.
The designers are good. Nora is my girl, i just wish i was there too and yes i did try but Tim told me that my designs were too Costumey and that i would be better off as a TECHNICAL Designer. Yeah WHATEVER Tim.... Parsons i hear filed for bankruptcy. Is that true?.

That bothered me at first as well...but now not so much. It's true- Bravo could definitely afford a nicer runway, but why bother? The point is to see how well these designs hold up and some flaws could be eclipsed on a more spectacular runway. It just wouldn't be good to run the risk of all the glamour of the scenery taking away from the focus on the dresses. Just a thought.

I do agree about Heidi's wardrobe though. And even some of the designers could stand to dress a bit more fashionably (especially Jay).

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to post my opinion on the designers. I honestly don't remember most of their names, but I have watched teh show since it started 3 weeks ago. I totally love it! My favorite designer is Robert, with Austin in a close second. My least favorite is Wendy. She just seems shady to me. I like how outspoken Jay is. He seems pretty cool.
Analee7
Are you talking about the same Alexandra?? Maybe I didn't get to see that other side of her because she wouldn't let anybody!!! Thats funny you say that Carolina... because talking to most people who know her and went to school with her, they agree with me. Go ahead ask. She was a snob. She walked around with her nose in the air, she was typical IFAC snobby fashion girl. You must be one of the privaleged select few whom she graces her presence with. And her not talking trash???? Hahahaha she may be quiet and sweet on the outside but I've overheard her talk a lot of trash.

Now don't get me wrong, I think she is a great designer, she has a lot of talent, and I hope she does very well, I know she'll do very well no matter the outcome of the show, this is a message board to post opinions on. My opinion of Alexandra, (note the my) is that her attitude stinks. Maybe you should get to know the other side of Alexandra... all that shimmers isn't gold.

I have got Austin Scarlett fever. Go Austin
KirstieJ
I loved Austin the moment I saw him step out of the van. Although I do love Nora and some of the others, my heart will always be true to Austin. As a new member of the "fan club" I have helped many of my friends become addicted to the show and as fellow Eugene kids we always cheer on our hometown hero!!!
chopinsghost
I would like it if Nora or Austin won. Both of them remind me of friends I would have had in high school. Based on first impressions, I really preferred Austin. Now I'm starting to really like Nora as well. She's someone I could see myself chilling with even now.
chopinsghost
I agree absolutely! I was watching the show today and I did a triple-take when I noticed they had put "39" as her age. My mother is in her late-50's and looks about as old as her. I am guessing Wendy is in her late-40's. The gray hair may mislead, but the skin and general look of the face don't. She's at least 45.
chopinsghost
Oh yeah, Jay is pretty cool too.
chopinsghost
God knows all straight guys should be like him. He's so attractive. I, (straight, 23-year-old "alterna-chick", thin yet sexy) am so sick of the nasty pot-bellied, steroid-pumped, insensitive, manly-man. All guys (gay or straight) should wear makeup and faux fur. Period.
chopinsghost
I am not happy Starr is gone, purely for the fact that her personality made for good television. However, Starr's designs sucked from day one. I am honestly surprised they did not get rid of her after the first challenge. Starr was, unlike many others, consistent: She was consistent in how much her designs sucked. I really feel sorry for her, though. She reminds me of myself (aspiring corporate lawyer, also with a dream for fashion-design), nevertheless, there was no better a candidate for dismissal than her.

If you're out there, good luck Starr...
marissa
jay's dress was fabulous! if i were 6ft tall i'd buy it in a minute. i wish he had won. wendy's was fine, but not stunning. nora's was great as well. hope they continue to do well. starr was terrible from the start, and has a weepy personality. poor thing, hope she survives in the legal world.

Thank you! I thought it was only me! I'm not sure if every guy should wear make up (not everyone can pull it off), but they should at least not be so inhibative and try! I mean, I don't want to date a guy so effeminate that he's more womanly than me, but being over-the-top macho is such a turn-off. [/rant] Probably why I have a crush on Alex Kapranos. *ahem*
AngelForLove
I love Austin. He is the consummate designer. He has such style! He is my favorite. I love his personality too.
Alex007
I'm a bit partial to the punks (which is why I like Nora so much)but I genuinely do think Austin could win this.Who else uses corn husks in a dress?I'm not a fashionista. All I know is I like what I see from these two.

And that's what makes you a better judge than the actual judges. They've been into fashion for so long that they've almost lost connection with what it's like to be an everyday person. It's like if you put on some obscure song and your 3 year-old niece starts dancing to it. She doesn't know what's "cool" or what's "uncool"- she only knows what sounds good.
Hannah_Lorrae
I loved all the fashions this week! Even Starr's...She does have talent. Even the judges said it...she has a long way to go. Jay's dress really showed his versatility and talent. I'm glad Wendy won. Her dress was best. Maybe now she'll drop her "strategy"...
FOV9091
Go to Buy Runway and check out the auction area. His dress is up for auction and is about $95 right now. I am sure that will sky rocket as well. Austin's dress which was also FAB! is listed at being about $310 right now.
FOV9091
I've briefly known Jay from our colorguard years and think he is great! He is very creative and wish him well. I think he as risen to all the challenges and look forward to seeing more from him. Oh, and what you see on TV is the Jay we all know and love. He has always be colorful and on the edge! GO JAY!

I also love Austin's work. He is very gifted as well and loved his last dress. I don't think it was very holiday but can definately see a spring/summer wedding outfit.
clodia
Like Thebazile, Austin was a good friend of mine in high school, and in my mind he is still like a little brother to me. I always knew he was someone special. I'm just glad everyone else is witnessing that too. I have been beaming with pride on not only his designs, but also his behavior in the competition. When Thebazile told me about the show, this is the Austin I wanted to see. Not only the style, which he has a neverending supply of, but of the hardworking and caring person he is.

I think he is way past all the high school experiences, but I also think if he hadn't had them, he wouldn't have gotten where he is. Vindication may not be a need, but it certainly can be a driving force. Sometimes when I talk about publishing my first book, I would always joke about the back-handed acknowledgements I would put in my dedication page. Would I ever do it? Probably not. But... it would be funny.
purp1esylph
I LOVE MY BOYFRIEND AWWWWWWSTIN! he's more fab than a basket of raspberries and rainbows! his designs are by far the best- i cant wait to see him win!
