she's pretty smart, eh?
kara always seems to think the most of any of them.......

I wasn't positive so I went and looked at imdb.com Not sure if Miramax holds the top production name, but they definitely put money into it.

I really want to think that it was Kara being smart, but this little red flag is waving, wondering if she's the decoy and they used her collection as a means of promotion. The only thing keeping me from believing it is not thinking Kara would compromise herself or her designs in that way.

Yeah, we'll go with her being the brightest bulb in the batch and using her smarts as well as her talent to get ahead.

I definitely think she's that smart.
and being in the "business" over there, i'm sure she could easily figure out which films mirimax was involved in.....

It just seems like her style.
I mean, when she left the runway after the 2055 episode, she made a point of speaking directly to betsey johnson. sure, she was being polite, but she was also trying to leave an impression with BJ.
i think kara is a smart business woman in addition to being a stylish designer and a nice person.
actually, i believe you can be all three and still get ahead.
I've never heard any horror stories about vera wang's personality, and i konw a couple people who know donna karan and they all say she's a simply lovely person.
bottomline, cut throat or no, i think people want to see what your clothes look like.
i mean, you can't hang your "strategy" on a rack.

nobody's going to pay money for that!

I like Talbot's. Any views of them here?

I had just been staring at the sponsors bit on the website, wondering why Miramax hadn't played a bigger role when...hey wait a minute, didn't Miramax produce The Aviator? Why yes, yes they did.

Either this is very suspicious, or Kara Saun was incredibly brilliant. It's certainly not surprising that she would be drawn to the style of the film...but...does it seem weird to anyone else that her inspiration would be a movie produced by one of the sponsors of the show?

Good eye!

Oh, more intrigue! If the finalists were picked last August they've had six months to design their collections. When was The Aviator released? In December? That would have given Kara Saun less than two months to create her collection. Devil's advocate here: was she working on another collection for 4 months and then dropped it because she was so blown over by the movie? Or did she work on nothing hoping that she would get inspiration from a not yet released film?

Maybe Miramax greased her palm in order to advertise the film (a weird form of product placement! but quite ingenious.)

Angee - - does Wendy have hanging zippers in her runway collection?

My guess is NO!

oscar:
two articles about the New York Fasion Week runway show that I read mentioned a dangling zipper in one of wendy's dresses. Two.
both articles have been posted on this website.

sorry.

you're entitled to your opinion, and although I respect it, I don't share it.

True true. She really seems to be the most focused and prepared out of all the designers, and all the time helping where she can. I think it just threw me for a loop because all of the other major sponsors have their name all over this show and we haven't heard anything from Miramax. I just hate the idea of a producer nudging her to do something to fulfill a contract with a sponsor.

I really hope that even if she doesn't win, Kara goes on to have her own line. If anyone can 'make it work', she can. I'd like to see more women with the combination of being smart, stylish and nice. Too often, especially with women, I think, we see nice being replaced with "b*tch", in all sorts of fields, not just fashion.

I can't imagine her scrapping a collection that late in the game or not having anything ready and be waiting for inspiration. Actually...scratch that. i think she's one of those people who never seems to see her own warts.

but do you really think they'll have the guts or smarts to do that?

You're right. The clothes Wendy showed for Fashion Week aren't terrible. But they also aren't as exciting as say Kevin's might have been, if they'd eliminated her when they should have over the "cat throw-up" number for 2055. And just imagine, after seeing his FUTURAMA service uniform what his Postal Uniform would've looked like? HOT - probably!

I'd be first in line to see Kevin's collection any day.

I mean really, what did they judge him on again? Being a bad leader, or being too different from the collection? How about being judged for being a bad apple who makes good stuff SOME of the TIME, but mostly "whatever" stuff MOST of the TIME.

If Wendy's smart, she'll shoot her arrow a little lower than New York. Stop calling her stuff Haute Couture (what a joke! Mugler, Galliano, Lacroix - that's Couture!) and try for the more wearable everyday Jaclyn Smith K-Mart route. She could make a bundle and do a lot less work. Didn't Michael Kors hit the nail on the head when he said, "even a size 16 wants to feel a little groovy!"

But our Robio was trying to be nice.
i could see the looks on jay's and kara's faces:
"What the.....?""
rob was trying to calm her down. I think he didn't like it that she was crying and just wanted her to quit. (just like a man...)

it also struck me that, again, jay, kara and austin displayed a little restraint in not getting involved in all that ridiculous drama that old wendy continues to manufacture. i'm sure they had work to do.........

umm, the dangling zipper was in her runway show at new york fashion week.
i'm pretty sure they had more than five hours to do that.
and in any event, I don't recall any mention of unfinished clothes in the writings about kara, jay and austin's work.

Yeah, I hear ya. I know. They were all "too nice." I woulda jumped ugly with her for 5 minutes and went back to work. It woulda been good to ventilate my hostility that way. It wouldn't have affected me one iota. Of cours, I can't sew, either...lol.

No sign of Kevin Johnn's show on wireimage. I did see some real interesting stuff, though. Michael Kors has a purple dress I love (I love purple too). Carolina Herrera's is a tad better. I like her. Oscar de la Renta is almost Autin-like in this red dress he did. I love it myself. Of course, I gotta be up for an Oscar, first...oh, and Oscar has to fit a petite 8 (which they never do).

Project Runway: Undressed!

NEW YORK: Monday, February 07, 2005

Jay McCaroll: The best collection by far, McCarroll’s models strutted down the catwalk like the coolest girls in town, rocking oversized headphones color-coordinated to their outfits. A strong but classic autumn color palette of gold, copper, brown, green, navy, and black fueled the directional, chunky-knit-heavy collection. McCarroll appeared to take cues from Comme des Garçons Fall 04, opening the show with a reworked Junya Watanabe-style quilted wrap coat and later with a jacket adorned with pins, similar to last season’s Comme. All in all, McCarroll is our winner: highly skilled, attentive to fit, with a brilliant eye for color. No gimmicks here—just ultra-stylish clothes.

Austin Scarlett: Scarlett’s costume-drama of a collection is pure Williamsburg—colonial Williamsburg. Scarlett sent models galomping down the runway dressed as Paul Revere and Yankee Doodle. Scalloped edging on leather, velvet trousers, ruffled shirts, sheepskin calf-length capes, jodhpurs, and even spats! All this was set to the tune of an old-school flute rendition of Yankee Doodle Dandy—with no irony, as far as we could tell. Scarlett clearly knows how to construct a garment, but he’s a little one-notey.

Kara Saun: No matter how much people like her personality (and obvious skill with leather), Kara’s collection was disappointing. Fantasy Fly-Girl’s color choices (rust, fucshia, mauve, and gold) were too much, and the addition of a Gucci knockoff belt didn’t help. Saun probably spent loads of dosh on expensive leathers (including crocodile) and furs, and her technical skills with leather are admirable, but we’d recommend a forage through a good fashion archive. The look of luxury does not come easy.

Wendy Pepper: Long, padded parkas, boxy brown suede pants, iridescent lime-green velvet, and ruched Lycra-Spandex, set to remixed ’80s new-wave tech pop. Need we say more?

If the goings-on of the show so far have brought people from all over the country/parts of the world to post out of sheer anger and frustration and it's a reflection of the general viewing population, then they'd better!

I thought many of the ideas were excellent. For them not to take at least one into consideration would be to risk alienating a multitude of viewers instead of tending to its growth.

Agreed. I bet that was Wendy's downfall...she thought she had to act a certain way, to be aggressive to the point of attacking your competitors, not just the task at hand.

I wonder if that's part of the reason that so many gay male designers fall into the "super-queen" stereotype, because that's a role they play to keep up the appearance of confidence. A lot of the gay men I've known who have been designers, fashion or otherwise, tend to really up the "flame" factor when presenting their work...and I never took it as a self-confidence issue before, but now I wonder.

Bravo never shows us enough of the clothes!
They spend so much time on the blah blah blah that we don't get to see the finished products except on the runway, and half of the camera time is given to the designer's face or the judge writing on a card.
even the photos are the web sometimes make it impossible to catch all the detail in the garments.

I couldn't agree with you more! For a show slotted for an hour, it's unfortunate how little of the air time is actually spent on the creative processes, design ideal and, of course, the designs themselves!

shoot, after seeing what she came up with in a day or less (wedding dress, BR dress, post office uniform, etc., etc.) i think kara could come up with an incredible collection in a month.......
jay's comment was funny, but you know he does the same thing. his stuff looks like it took a lot longer to execute than he has (BR dress, 2055 outfit). Kara Saun just doesn't agonize over her designs as much as he does (or at least we don't see it and tim hasn't mentioned it).

That's certainly possible. And in theory she could just be inspired by the movie being released, and went and did her own research on the era.

Her attention to detail is amazing. Anyone else notice the iPod that her model had on during the 2055 challenge? I thought that was a very nice touch. She seems to thrive on the time constraints.

Thank you so much for posting this - ah, my suspicions confirmed once again, and I am so so so proud of Jay; he never ceases to amaze me. This is a great analysis, and makes me feel in some small way what it must have been like to see the collections walk down the runway. I really hope they give us lots of eye candy from fashion week; it would be so lame if they limit us to only a few pieces or a few short seconds.

I'm squirming in my seat for tonight's episode - can't believe how obsessed I've become, but then again, I'm mostly interested in Jay.

What is interesting about this new development we've come across in posts is the movie was released in Dec. 2004. It's starting to make me think maybe she was the one booted. Though your point about her doing research on the era is completely valid for if she is in.

The other thing I've thought of is on several of the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" they have had promos where it looks like the guy doesn't do what he was suppose to do, then when you watch it, realize he did and the promo was a put on. SO, the "elimination" that you didn't see coming could still be Wendy OR is Kara eliminated because she is already a designer in some capacity under another label or name so she takes herself out? Ok, my latter comment is far fetched, but, hey, why not put it out there with all the other theories.

Hey, first-time poster sharing your obsessions. Not much left to say -- some scary vibes here on these boards, but also some fabulous funny witful and interesting stuff too -- sort of like shopping in Daffys! Very excited about tonight.
Quick note in response to all that well-founded criticism of the show itself -- keep in mind it's a debut. To me, it appears that Heidi wanted to do something after seeing Tyra's success and this was cooked up right quick. Yes, it does get a little too "survivor" from time to time courtesy of La Wendy (by the way, if the others hit her at the end of the show, does she become the "Assaulted Pepper"?), but on the whole, I think the challenges are pretty cool. They test creativity, design skill, sewing, interpersonal skills and time management, all of which seem to me to be important in some way to the business. By all reports, it is a completely cutthroat business, and learning to live with that as a permanent constraint seems wise. Lots of good suggestions for improvement have been made on these boards, and maybe we will see them next season. But let's not be too hard on the network -- in short order and for very little dough, they are turning out something entertaining which has rekindled my interest in fashion and kindled a respect for designers.

By the way, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay. All the way. (Full disclosure: I'm from the same part of PA and I now live in Philly where he did his study. So I'm rooting for the hometown boy although Kara Saun, you rock and you will have a HUGE career.)

I have even visited Wendy's (not a fan in the least but curiosity killed the cat, and there was definitely an abundance of things the cat coughed up in that veiwing) I am particularly interested in Kara, Austin and Jay (I believe they are the final 3 but tonight will tell) Please share if you have any sites?

i know, I have a "voluptuous" friend who bemoans the fact that, at a size 16, she technically is the average size american woman, and she can't find fashionable things.
i guess we're all in a similar boat!!

Did Kara Saun actually SAY that her collection was inspired by the Aviator, or did a reporter from MSN analogize the collection to the film? I mean, I read the reviews of her collection which used the word "fly-girl" & I just figured that Kara went back to the same military look that she used for the Envy challenge.

I like the whole Miramax conspiracy theory, but I'm wondering if Kara's collection wasn't in fact inspired by her years as an Air Force brat & not the film. I'm asking because I think it would be way gimmicky for her collection to be an ad for a Miramax film. I can't imagine her sucking up to Bob & Harvey like that (she has way too much integrity & her designs stand on their own), and frankly, with all of its award nominations, the Aviator just doesn't need extra publicity.

Needless to say, I cannot freaking wait until tonight. But I am a little apprehensive after hearing the trailer re: the surprising elimination. To me, that can only mean that Cruella is going to advance (I don't want to see her advance instead of any of the others & I will totally start crying if poor Austin gets the axe tonight). Ugh. Wendy strikes me as a serial poisoner. I especially hated the move she pulled last week with the crying over the defacement of her daughter's picture. She has the coping skills of a pre-pubescent girl--act all horrible and backstabby one second and then start crying when you realize that no one likes you. I wish her ill.

actually, one of the articles posted here (can't remmeber which one) mentioned that Kara said during her address to the audience before her show that it was inspired by the Aviator.

I agree with much of what you said, although I don't necessarily wish Wendy ill.
I wish her much worse: I hope she gets what she deserves.

I know that several of the designers have websites of their work.
