Jay seems the most real and fun of all of the designers. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of talent in that group, but Jay's the most interesting and well rounded. His intuitive flair brings out the best in the models. His abilities are strong enough that he doesn't have to rely on weird alliances and underhanded tactics to succeed on Project Runway. It's great because he's freed up to speak his mind and keep on doing what he's doing.

If I had the chance, I'd arrange a meeting with him someplace quirky and unassuming, like outside a chinese restaurant in Tyrone, Pennsylvania or something in a drizzling rain. From there, we'd check into a strange, dingy motel made of cinder blocks down the street from the county jail by a state park somewhere near Holidaysburg along Rte. 22. We'd spend the day shopping at the local discount store for interesting bargains and snacks and eat bad food at a lousy greasy spoon. He'd lend me his hand milled soap. We'd talk about how weird it was meeting this way and search for meaning in the folds and crevases of the knotted sheets and the magical orb. I'd tell him how much I love the wardrobe he'd designed for me and ask how best to care for his fine, handmade garments. He'd tell me I was gross with a dirty mind. We'd take Polaroid pictures of each other in dramatic poses and try to find something worth watching on the TV. We'd smoke cigarettes and go to bed early and sleep in late. In the morning, we'd part ways. He'd leave to go to some big meeting in Philadelphia or New York, and I'd head back to Pittsburgh and my life on the other side. I'd thank him for sharing his time with me. I'd hit the highway wondering when I'd have the chance to see him again and send him good wishes while watching his car disappear in the rear view.

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff I'd like to do with Jay if I ever had the chance.

Ok, I just found the show last week..I can't seem to make up mind between Austin, Kara and Jay. The three of them are great. Now addicted!!

I am a tad late in this...lol.

I love Austin because he reminds me of a young Yves St. Laurent. All my friends asked me about the show & why I didn't apply & I said i didn't know anything about it...lol.
I would of loved to have been on the show but alas I design menswear mostly.. but hey I could do anyhting...lol.

I am in this for the long run and hope Austin does the best.

In episode three, Robert was criticized for placing the blue satin(?) with the leopard print material. During a commerical break, I saw a Banana Republic commercial. It showed a woman carefully selecting an outfit for a date. She chose to wear a classy skirt that had a print and a leopard top.
I think this is hypocrisy! Why should Robert be reprimanded for his design if Banana Republic themselves chose this appaling combination for a commercial? Although I didn't like Robert's dress, I couldn't help but see the hypocrisy in this. But maybe it's a completely different situation in an outfit as compared to a dress. I just found that curious....

I'm just loving this series from the standpoint of learning about fashion design (which has applications to any creative discipline), marketing, confidence, etc., but I'm glad Bravo understands the value of eye candy. I was a bit sad when Mario got cut but the more I watch Robert and Austin, the more I think they're hot. Very different personalities and styles to be sure, but as a photographer, I love their features and their energies. Austin, with that gorgeous, wavy blond hair of his and expressive eyes, emotes outrageousness - totally fun to watch. And Robert's affable smile and impressive upper body ... stir me. I wish I lived in New York so I could meet both these guys.

Anyone know what their astrological signs are? I'm guessing Robert is a Cancer while Austin is a Leo.

Cheers, all!

OK I finally had to jump in. I couldn't agree more w/ the general sentiments. Austin is TOPS. Starr's work was worse than bad. At first I thought she was just placed on the show for effect, you know? But then I realized that she was placed in the WRONG reality show--she should have been placed in TLC's "Faking It"---silly me!

did anyone else notice that on the first episode and on the website, kevin's age is listed as 44...but during the third episode they show his age as 37? i might be wrong but has anyone else picked up on this?

.....some of these people are not that creative and need classes to improve their skills....Wendy is one of them....the judges have already pointed that out...she seems to just be on the show for entertainment...the lawyer also needs classes ....some of these people really have fashion design skills and have the past training...I think it is sad the stereotype of the homosexual male as fashion designer is being played out also...there are hundreds of males who are not homosexual that design fashion....also it seems interesting that a model is hosting a contest for fashion....seems Patricia Field or Mr. Kors would have been a more appropriate host....what do you think

I'll agree that a few need a lot of work...perhaps they were put on the show for other reasons... OR perhaps they felt that this show would push them harder than it has. Hopefully they do have something to show.

About the host. I have seen on another show an expert...no a public figure, an authority passed over for someone unknown in the field...but just more captivating to the public eye. In this show, a model is the host...related to fashion yes but probably not an authority on fashion, though she's used to being on camera and well...gets attention.

Yes there's a stereotype with the homosexual males...but at least there was AT LEAST one straight male on the show.

I really like how diversified the designers are...I have looked over their portfolios, and I hope the designs get better from the ones whom I liked.

umm how did austin NOT win the banana republic competition?! i wanted to buy that dress so badly!!! err!! it was so gorgeous and i think many ppl agree. And of anyone how did wendy win? it was nice but it was so simplistic and it was just the type of dress that you can find at any store. but i will never find another dress as beautiful as austin's!!! hes such a great designer...even his corn dress was gorgeous.

I think that the fact that Wendys dress is the type of dress you'd expect to find is WHY it won... everyone buys them (well not me...) Austin's on the other hand was kind of retro like they said, I like how whimsical it looked on her....but not that print....I mean for a holiday party? I really enjoyed Austin's last design, and about the homosexual comment, what does it matter? If he's truly talented he will win no matter what...
celerystalksat12
I've been watching this show since it started and I must say, it's uber fantastiche! I liked Starr's designs in her portfolio, but I think she's a very material-vision specific designer, and so this kind of competition was not right for her. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Kevin, because of his lack of screen time, neither does Alexandra or Vanessa. I don't know what to think of Wendy at all. I must say I'm in love with Austin Scarlett's arms! Is that strange? He's got magnificent talent and a wonderful understanding of the female figure, but would it kill him to wear a t-shirt and jeans some episode? (Plus, what was with the poncho nightshirt-gown thing?) Jay is my homeboy! I love him; he's loud, brash, unafraid to voice his opinion. Nora's punk but artistic vision is also great. I would love to see a competition which made the designers work together, because I think Jay and Nora's design would kick some serious derriere. Am I missing anyone? I hope not. Oh! Robert! What can I say? No more animal prints! Karasaun fulfills her "professional" title. My heart sank during the first epi. and her model was late!

Welp, that's it for now.

Are you talking about the same Alexandra?? Maybe I didn't get to see that other side of her because she wouldn't let anybody!!! Thats funny you say that Carolina... because talking to most people who know her and went to school with her, they agree with me. Go ahead ask. She was a snob. She walked around with her nose in the air, she was typical IFAC snobby fashion girl. You must be one of the privaleged select few whom she graces her presence with. And her not talking trash???? Hahahaha she may be quiet and sweet on the outside but I've overheard her talk a lot of trash.

Now don't get me wrong, I think she is a great designer, she has a lot of talent, and I hope she does very well, I know she'll do very well no matter the outcome of the show, this is a message board to post opinions on. My opinion of Alexandra, (note the my) is that her attitude stinks. Maybe you should get to know the other side of Alexandra... all that shimmers isn't gold.

I went to both elementary school and high school with Alexandra and her sister and she wasn't a snob. She was a very quiet girl who was always very fashionable and beautiful, much like her younger sister. Both of them are amazing people who I have had the pleasure of knowing most of my life and I am so thrilled to see Alexandra on the show. I think she's doing an amazing job and really holding her own and it's so interesting to see her attitude come out in the her fashions. I'm not exactly sure where you're from, but, in Miami, we carry ourselves a little differently than people from other places and, perhaps, that's what you're misconstruing as snobbishness. As for the trash talking, we're Hispanic women from an all girl's school...everyone talked trash.

Poor thing. Episode 4 shows clips of my favorite guy crying. I hope they weren't too brutal to him.

Anyone have a scoop as to what happened?

Hey, you noticed that too. I was not a fan of that dress but BR is using that same theme in their commericals. Robert was just having an "off" week. If you check out his runway designs on the net this is was an accident compared to what he is really capable of.
Rock on Robert, I luv you!

Robert is a Sagittarius, you may be right about Austin

You're right: it's very conservative and very BR, which is why it did deserve to win that particular challenge, even though I thought it was boring. Another factor I think may have contributed to hers winning, and I didn't realize it until I saw the episode again, is how simple it was. It was a very basic dress shape, with very little detail. That sort of dress would be very easy to mass produce, while a dress like Jay's, Austin's, or Kara's, which were gorgeous, would have taken ages because several parts need to be handmade.

Quote:

That would be an ignorant mob. Even though he's my favorite designer, it's no mystery why he didn't win. Though, to be fair, when they said "holiday," they didn't say "Christmas," AND when the woman was explaining the challenge, she said, "this season we're big on flow-y pinks...think 'grandmother's attic'" and he clearly fit the latter asthetic quite well. I agree that for that particular challenge his wasn't the best suited, but I highly disagreed with the comment, "Would a real woman really wear something like that?"
laymansview
I'm surprised there hasn't been more mention of Kara. Her work has been consistently good and she won the 2nd episode. I think she has a real shot at winning this thing! Am I missing something?

I'm sure the reality we get to view has been totally manipulated, just like in other "reality" tv...but I have to say PR is totally addictive!
FashionFreak
I think that the people who are making it in, but not winning, and not being the bottom, are the ones that need to be paid attention to. Example: Austin, who won the first challenge hands down, has not been doing as good ever since, being in the bottom. Nora, who they loved the first episode, said she was really bad the second.

Consistency is key. Just because they aren't winning the entire time doesn't mean they don't have a chance. Examples: Vanessa, Kevin, Jay, etc. they all have a big chance, even though all of their designs weren't flawless.
paillette
I have to agree that Austin's first design was by far his best: the corn husk dress was superb. Tuning in to episode two, I was rooting for him because I was so impressed with his work in #1. But his envy dress, while good, looked a little less than exciting on the mannequin in the store: unless you are willing to work it like his model did, it wasn't really all that exciting. As for the rose dress in episode 3: I admired the craft, but would never, ever wear it. It was either for the tween set or a Stepford Wife: as a working professional, I don't want to look like a dolly, even at a holiday party.

In my opinion, the great undervalued designer in the show is Vanessa. Her portfolio is wonderful, and she makes things for real, confident-therefore-sexy women.
gonzosmom
I absolutely adore Austin. His confidence in his skills, and his self assurance in who he is — amazing for one so young. I certainly see him becoming highly successful at whatever he endeavors to do. By far, he's my favorite.

So did you guys notice why the judges didn't LOVE Austin's design the way most of us did? The judges said it just seemed very impractical with the added piece of tull on the bottom... they said women wouldn't like to buy that... WHATEVER!! The dress is something (I think) women would love to wear and just don't because it's not readily available the way Austin's design would have made it. Anyway, I thought it looked like something Carrie from Sex and The City would have worn... needless to say, I loved it!!!

It *was* adorable and frisky. I loved it as well. BR apparently thought Wendy's dull and wan "non-sex-having secretary" design suited them better, which leads me to suspect that they're eyeing the Talbot's set. Next fall, BR's "story" will be all about the teacher of the primary grades and will feature white cotton turtlenecks with the crazy crayon print which pairs nicely with the appliqued sweater vest from Eagle's Eye.

To Nora,

you have grown to become a beautiful, unique and talented woman. I just want to let you know your family is watching you, supporting you all throughout the way. I am soo proud of you, you look fabulous out there!! Your clothing is amazing, every peice you make is filled with your unique and creative sense of style. I look forward to wednesday nights watching you do what you were born to do. Well i could go on forever... Keep your head up, and most importantly enjoy this oppurtunity you so much deserve. I know you will be extremely successful on this journey and your journey through life. Love you soo much!! ~your cousin Vicky~

Hey everyone! I just joined the message board but definitely an avid watcher of Project Runway. I'm hoping Wendy next time decides to leave her plan as well because she's coming off as a major b*tch. I think Austin is an awesome designer and I think Robert is hot and Alexandra is gorgeous!
FashionBoy1975
Austin is my absolute fave designer. He is confident in himself and his creations, and he doesn't behave like a d*ck. His first dress was very unique; liked the cornhusk idea. It was good in the sense that he managed to weather the storm of having his husks dried out and then coming out a winner regardless. His "envy" dress was ravishing; and the model looked very pretty in it. Liked the accompanying walk as well. His rose dress was beautiful, regardless of what that snooty editor at Elle says. Right at this point I believe that Austin is the only designer who has a vision of what he wants create and he executes it with ease.

Wendy is grating on my nerves. She is the quintessential d.q. All of this talk about PR being "her only chance" is getting old. Quit the self-defeatist bologna Wendy. P.S.--your black dress was very elegant.

Alexandra is pretty and she is another fave of mine. I liked her brown dress in the first show. Her fashions are appealing and sexy.

Jay will eventually get an Auf Wiedersehen from Heidi. He is a d*ck.

Starr, poor girl... I didn't feel sorry for her throught these three shows. If she wants to pursue fashion design, she has my permission. She reminds me of how I used to be when I knew dung was going to hit the fan. Being an introvert and an emotional basketcase bites.

Vanessa is okay. I love her British accent. I thought that "pregnant" dress she did for the Envy show was funny.

The others are [expletive deleted]-hum to me, like Kevin, Kara, Robert, and Nora. Those babushkas Nora wears, though...
sigmaK
HA HA that was really funny...
sigmaK
thanks for the link, loved it!!!
sigmaK
Robert is wicked hot... his last design killed me though, the print with the ice blue was awful (in my opinion). I adore him and I was glad to see that the judges were kind and gave him another chance. Can't wait till the next new episode!
sigmaK
I totally agree with you about the Wendy character, she's starting to bum me out with all her "THIS IS MY ONLY SHOT INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY" mumbo jumbo. I really love Austin too, he's so classy!
snitch
Okay, I do have a hard time picturing Austin's AMAZING creation at the BR, so I guess he shouldn't have won this challenge, even though his dress was the most gorgeous thing. Though Jay's was certainly the most brilliant with the art deco theme. I have to say, so many this week were fantastic. But if BR was going to go with safe and easy to produce, they should have gone with Kevin's. His was very nice. But Wendy? Although not apallingly bad, as all of Starr's designs, can we all agree it was super boring, even with the weird capelet?

And about this nonsense of Austin's dress not being interesting for "real women", see that it's kicking absolute arse in the auction! I would buy it, and I am completely not a dress-wearing sort of girl. Jay's too, for that matter. But lovely, darling Austin's was just incredible. I really hope he wins.

But I do find Kara, Nora, Jay and Vanessa quite worthy and also solid contestants.

But what is all this hype about Robert's looks? I think he's repellent. In a Fabio sort of way. Like if you took all his features apart, they'd be hot, but something about the way they're put together is disturbingly NOT. Please, people.
FashionFreak
With Robert, on the last challenge, he should have most definitely stuck with hiw print on top, yellow bottom (underneath) dress because then he would have had a shot.
paillette
I think the reasons for Austin crying are pretty clear: it must have to do with the upcoming "Rock n' Roll" theme. This surely won't be Austin's forte, and he may come in for some harsh evaluations on the runway. He's more Dusty Springfield than Rolling Stones. But he certainly won't be eliminated -- though I don't regard him with the same adoration as many of the others here, but no one can deny that he has incredible craft.

Ok, how is being a fashion designer a homosexual stereotype? I'm no fashion expert but I have seen the designers over the years and I thought they all were straight...even more than that, I didn't care. The clothes were either good or not good. The only little queen I see on this show so far is Austin - all the rest are straight. And I could be guessing about Austin - actions don't always tell...speaking from experience. Anyway, their sexual preference is not the focus here - their creativity is. No one can truthfully say that Austion is not tops along with a few others. The show is not about "entertainment value" as some people think - entertainment value is not going to make a good-looking outfit. You pegged it right when you said, "I really like how diversified the designers are...I have looked over their portfolios, and I hope the designs get better from the ones whom I liked."

KIDDING!

Yes it was a party dress and yes it was floral - but it was floral material that BR had displayed to be used. The representative was expressing "pink and yellow" as part of their wanted theme then they trash him on it? Well screw them!! Idiots, I don't think they knew WHAT they wanted! And that one judge...GGGGRRRRR!!!...I'd like to flounce her! I bet she's the one who makes him cry next new epi - where's my shoe!

Austin has never touched bottom so far. Even though the (blind) judges were not crazy about the party dress, he still was not at the bottom. So far, he has been not only consistant, but his designs have rated tops among the public! Check his party dress at the auction and the ratings for his designs

Isn't it just adorable though, in the preview, when he's dancing with the mannequin? "May I have this dance? *waltz*" Fantastic.

Wendy's capelet didn't seem to fit her model very well; it looked very displaced when ever she moved her shoulders.

I do have to agree that Austin's party dress wouldn't exactly be something you find at Banana Republic. Though, it would've flattered so many figures (even if BR has a restricted size range). Wendy's "midnight creation" would just make most of us curvier girls look like...I dunno, overstuffed sushi rolls. I think Kevin should have won, for sure. Chic, simple and classy, even if I don't like showing my back. Oh well, I know I wouldn't be able to afford any of them, anyway.

That's actually what I thought as soon as they picked Wendy's. Although it better fit their aesthetic and would be easier to reproduce, I firmly believe that they would have done better in picking Jay's or Austin's dress because the people that watch Project Runway are the most likely buyers for whichever dress won, and Wendy's not exactly popular. People who don't watch the show are going to think it's just another dress and not give it a second though. From a purely strategical point, picking Wendy was not the best decision. Just look at how high Austin and Jays' dresses are doing in the auction, because they have so many fans. Tsk tsk, Banana Republic, I thought you were more revenue-minded than that.

Ok my bad - I went back and read the article (after laughing hysterically at that ad) and it said Jay and Mario are gay - which still doesn't matter because they have talent but wanted to correct myself and apologize.

As for your comment about Austin's dress not being "Banana Republican", I actually saw the material he used at a Banana Republic store here in Northern California. It was for a very posh handbag.

From the very first episode, Austin caught my eye. He's my favorite designer in Project Runway. This show is pretty cool.

Austin and I went to high school together. After meeting him in our freshman World History class, I had a HUGE crush on him for a couple of months, before I realized he wasn't interested in me. Fortunately, rather than breaking my heart, this served as an opportunity to get to know him as a person.

And, of course, the scene from 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' that we performed for the Drama Club helped that along, too.

At any rate, Austin designed the display part of our team project for that World History class. . .a Carnivale queen costume from Colombia or something (it's been 10 years, give me a break!) and it was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen. Until prom night.

Oh. My. God. He designed and made his date's dress. He had their hair and makeup done professionally in the City (um, NYC). And he looked STUNNING. I think he used the tux pants in his interview video, but that may just be me. He deserved to win Prom King.

Over the next few years, I learned names like 'Jean-Paul Gaultier' and 'Yves Saint-Laurent' without knowing their work. Seeing one of the Gaultier shows from NY Fashion Week a few years ago really put Austin back into my mind, because it reminded me so much of what I'd remembered about him.

We'd lost touch after graduation, but my younger brother ran into him at a party in September. I snagged his e-mail address and dropped him a quick line. . . and heard about this show. It's been on my calendar for MONTHS and I feel it's well-worth the wait.

This show is THE opportunity he deserves, in my opinion, and I feel that it will help him do GREAT things.
Things that I believe he's capable of.
And things to produce ENVY in all the little b****es who made fun of him in high school.

One day, and I hope that it's soon, they will be freezing their butts off because they're lined up around the corner waiting for an "Austin Original". . . and he'll be able to tell them "no". But maybe that's my own revenge fantasy.

I just started watching project runway and was shocked and surprised to see Austin on TV. I too went to high school with him and I agree with you that he is so talented and all the jerks that snubbed them are kicking themselves now. I was at that prom and he was amazing...If I recall he won prom king but the preppy seniors got pissed b/c his date was a junior. Good luck to Austin. His designs have been fabulous so far. I will be rooting for him.

(p.s. who are you TheBazile I was also invloved in drama around the same time)
