I am so tempted to try and get my mom on this show. She just made 70, she is from Germany, grew up there during WWII, has 4 children and is a spitfire. She was a seamstress apprentance before meeting my father when he was stationed there. She use to make all of our clothes and even made all the dresses for my sister in laws and my weddings. But I know her stuff wouldn't be the most up to date and I don't know if I could handle watching her be critized. Of course I have never seen her critized I mean other than family, of course. Like when she cut my hair when I wasn;t looking because she thought I needed a haircut. You know, on second thought maybe I could handle seeing her be a little critized.

good lord, she cut your hair when you weren't looking?
I would have spent my childhood sleeping with one eye open!

She sounds like a pistol. she would have been great, I think. No whining from that generation, that's for sure.
And I bet she would have figured out to make the dagone thong!!
luvinkpenz
Let me just say it was hard growing up and not being able to say "Mom you don't know how hard it is today". I mean she could just come back with "I had to dodge bombs and eat nettle soup." You just couldn't compete.
luvinkpenz
No, I was awake and 15 years old. We had like a event to go to the next day so she was putting curlers in my hair. So she sits on the couch i sit on the floor in front of her. She takes the sisscors she hid under the cushion. Reached around and cut my bangs. Crooked. So, then of course she had to "fix" them. Good times, good times.

So we won't find out who wins tonight? I just can't wait for all the drama to come to a head tonight a be over with.

Thanks for the info.

no, we don't find out until next week, when there will be a two-hour episode when they are to show us the collections (which of course everyone on this board already has seen via the links).
so we've all got another week to wait.

Great Artice, Sable!
Seems to capture the whole genre of the show.

Where was it originally published?

does the winner know yet?

HOLY COW
LOL!!!

must have been hell being a teenager.
my grandmother set up housekeeping during WWII.
she still recycles and reuses everything.
(washes ziplocs in the dishwasher, I kid you not)
you definitely cannot have one of those "times are tough" conversations with that generation!!!
I miss that kind of self-reliance, tho.
i must be getting old, because I get tired of the people who are always trying to give you an excuse as to why they can't do their job or whatever.......

OMG! I just read that entire article (okay, I got a little bored towards the end) and what a [expletive deleted] Vanessa is! I was shocked. She insulted just about everyone in that article - including her customers ('It's not the fine, tailored image that you have to work on, in order to extract that wallet from some rich old bag who wants a fabulous outfit to wear to a ball').

And her opinions of Wendy were obviously second-hand. She admits she got along fine with Wendy but then she heard about how evil she was afterwards.

I had to laugh at what she said about Wendy being so old and not having made it in fashion by now. Vanessa is 35 and Kara Saun in 37. Without PR almost no one would know their names now either. And the two of them have been a lot more active in trying to get a huge fashion career off the ground.

The only 2 people who would have any genuine beef with Wendy are Kevin and Austin. And maybe Kara Saun, altho I must say the whole "she stole my fabric" bit was a stretch.

Don't be so sure. As we have all pointed out, there has been a lot of action that went on that has been editted out and ended up on the cutting room floor. It's psssible, for example, that Wendy went after Mario during the Envy challange (Not saying it's true, but possible). Who knows what ended up on the cutting room floor, and did not get into the final prints of the episodes?

I don't know.
I would think they do, tho, because they aren't doing the shows live and you know they would want to show reaction....
so i'm guessing they already told the winner and filmed their reaction, etc., but that's just a guess.

too long ago for me. I can't remember where I left my car keys five minutes ago.

she sounds like an interesting person, tho
how do you think she would react to bunking with people like jay, austin or robio?
think she would be sneaking up behind them to chop off their hair?
giving austin lipstick tips?
fussing at rob about running around nekkid???
i think she'd be a great addition to that kind of show!!

I just watched the preview for tonight, I think Jay and Vanessa get into it. He is looking to his left when he is saying his "Why do you act like this" comment. Wendy is sitting in front of him on his right. No telling who leaves though. The only one I dont think would leave is Kara Saun. I am not so sure Wendy would leave either. I think she likes confrontation too much. She's is going to feel superior to all the people she outlasted I think she would stay to suck that up.
luvinkpenz
I am not sure. I think she would behave herself. She does have the mother guilt thing going on. She has the whole "Oh, I have all these headaches, The doctor said I had a minor stroke. Maybe if I were called more often by my children I wouldn't have such high blood pressure and wouldn't have had a stroke in the first place.

You know, all reality shows always seem to focus on the twenty-somethings, obviously for the cute factor, demographics, and all that stuff. How about choosing a group of contestants with a higher median age? They would definitely have more life experience to draw on, and it would probably make for a more intense competition. I bet there are a lot of folks out there like the woman "luvs" described, who, by the way, sounds like a true dynamo, that could make for great viewing......

Sorry, everyone. It was Angeedee's mom I was referring to. I'll say it again, though. She sounds like quite the woman.

I agree.
I mean, I don't think all of america really wants to constantly watch a bunch of people they can't relate to.
Hell, there are some shows with older people that have been wildly popular.
but you know hollywood. they have decided what we want and there's nothing we can do to convince them they are wrong.
I'm sure they assume they know better than us anyhow.

It's 'possible' that Austin and Robert had a torrid love too. But we really don't know what else, if anything went on behind the scenes. So why do so many like to assume that there must have been a lot more evil stuff from Wendy. Even Vanessa said that she got along with Wendy. She didn't know she was the devil until the others told her.

And how exactly do you think Wendy would have 'went after' Mario? I think she is given credit for much more plotting and coniving that she actually carried out.

I'm not a Wendy Defendy, I do not like her, and I think that she is a horrible "designer." However, I had the view that she was edited to look far worse than she really is. I figured that they filmed hundreds of hours of footage and the ended up using at most 6.75 hours (9 epis at 45 mins each) of footage most of it concentrating on Wendy so that her actions were heightened.

Well, then I caught the first two epis on Monday wherein Wendy pretty much states that she is going to exploit the others' weaknesses in order to win; hm, why not just design really well in order to win? Also, posters have been putting excerpts of what she has written on her website. She doesn't say stuff like "it was a misunderstanding" "it didn't go down that way" etc. Essentially she admits to really horrible behavior! So now I think that the producers concentrated on her because she acted so out of line.

This is my first post, so forgive me if this factoid was raised in one of the 400-or-so other messages.

I think that geography provides some additional insight into Ms. Pepper-Spray. She lives and works in Middleburg, VA -- a remote 'burb of Washington, DC that is peopled by members of the horsey set. Foxes, english saddles, antiques, blah, blah, blah. No one ever accused these people of having what the fashion industry would define as good taste. In fact, the whole Washington, DC area is notorious for its lack of fashion flash. (That the Washington Post has a "Style" section eternally amuses me.)

What residents of Middleburg might consider magnificent evening wear is what anyone with an eye for true fashion would deem one step up from a bridesmaid's gown.

That said, I have looked at Wendy's site. Her stuff is revolting. However, it seems that she is able to take very expensive fabrics and do very swishy stuff in a marginally structured fashion; this probably passes as "avant garde" luxe by local standards.

If she has an inflated sense of self, it may be the result of a coterie of snooty and somewhat misguided clients.

Of course, that doesn't excuse her behavior.
desperatewannabe
So cool! If your Mom came on, I would hope the first challenge would be to design something for the first set of designers. She could do something "old country" like lederhosen for Jay. That would be great!
In all seriousness, I think the kind of criticism people are subject to (on these boards more than the judges) would make it hard to see a loved on go on. If she did, I'd advise her not to publish an email address! She sounds like a hoot even if the rest of us don't get to know her...

Actually, I think it would go along with Wendy's whole martyr persona for her to start crying and then leave. I don't think she has the personal integrity that the other designers do, and it's very clear she can dish out criticism but can't take it from anyone. I'm thinking pretty much everyone is going to turn on her, either because she wronged one of them, or they heard about it after the fact.
PRaddict
I don't blame editing for anything. I just didn't see her do anything that I consider outrageous. So she said that Austin and Kevin were bad leaders after making nice with them? Big whoop. Austin didn't get ousted because of her. Neither did Kevin really. She may have been two-faced but was she wasn't sabatoging their work or anything. (No, I don't believe she stole Kara's fabric - that's not what I saw- and if Kara thought she did steal it, why didn't Kara speak up for herself?? There should have been a catfight!)

If good designing is all it takes, why did Kara and Jay need this show to boost their careers? Especially Kara, she's been in the business for years. That dress she designed for Queen Latifah was hideous too BTW.

I'm sorry that this show did not live up to many people's expectations but it was a COMPETITION. Exploiting your opponent's weaknesses is standard in competing. Wendy wanted to be in the Top 3, she did what she had to do to get there. She personally didn't cause any of the other designers any lasting harm. You all seem to think Wendy should have just told herself she wasn't as talented as the rest of the designers and went home. But I'm sure Wendy thinks she's very talented and she should because a person needs to believe in their own talent, even when no one else does. (Look at William Hung. Say what you want, he's feeling good about himself.)

Hey PRaddict, please don't say things like "everyone on this board". There are plenty of us here not bashing or hating, just enjoying the fashion (although I too find some of Wendy's attitude dispicable).

To prove that I am equal in my addiction to PR, you should know that I rewatched that episode (the one where Kara helped Wendy) last night - while recording for a friend from Tivo. Kara simply stated that she felt like the judges (paraphrasing) weren't taking her seriously because of the way she presented herself. Not condescending her at all. She was absolutely lovely with her. Hugging her, really rooting for her. Kara is not a spring chicken either, although the two women are from different worlds.

I must say that I wasn't surprised to see Wendy turn on people though. It was no surprise that she has claws. She said from the beginning that she wanted to use her so-called "Long Shot" status to help her get close to people so that she could use it against them. So I wasn't suprised at all that although Austin broke down crying at the notion that he would have to pick between the two, Wendy was ready and her aim was clean and deadly.

She wanted to win. Plain and simple. She knew (and nobody bash me for it because she said it over and over on the show and her web pages) that she didn't have the talent others had so she needed to work a strategy. I guess most of us hoped that she meant she would plan things out more, or do things in her design that surprised everybody, not JUST be a [expletive deleted] or play mind games with people. And I think that is what most people are peeved about. I can't say here that all of her work was bad, because it wasn't. It just always happened to be better than the thing that knocked someone else out. So, while I think the finale might be more FUN and FABULOUS with NORA or KEVIN or VANESSA, whomever. Wendy made it there, by hook or by crook and I hope that we can all talk about the fashion the designers made now instead of this one woman's personality.

Oddly enough, I'm certain that much of the chatter on these boards contributed immensely to the fact that she stayed on. If you think the producers are so conniving, doesn't it make sense that they would recognize a ratings gold mine when they see it?

ARGGH!!! I'm already ready already for SEASON TWO!!!!!

Yes, if anyone has any tips, I'd like to know them too. It has literally taken me days just to read a few threads. I'm hardly a web novice, but this is the weirdest message board I've ever visited. Please help.

I understand what you are saying but realistically how many 60 year olds are wanting to start their career in the fashion world? It's not an easy business and youth certainly helps. If you think about it, Jay is now 30, Vanessa was 34, Kara is 37, Kevin is 37, and Wendy was 40. Those are good median ages in the fashion world. Certainly not spring Chickens. And even Robert and Daniel were pushing 30. They all dressed younger but they were older. I was happy to see folks over 30...period.

hhhmm..an interesting observation. my daughter graduated from parsons in 2000 w/ a degree in photography. she struggles just like everyone else. she has worked for yancy richardson and alvin booth and currently assists for andrew moore...big deal...like is tough in manhattan...no matter what your dipolma says.
rufusblue
I also understand the opinions of those who say "this is just a reality show competition" and "lighten up" but it's hard to do that whent the prize is VERY REAL. To get a show at Fashion Week is an umbelievable achievement and for Wendy to get a spot there was a slap in the face to every designer out there that has worked hard to get anywhere near Bryant Park. It's even more insulting when you realize that she got there because the Producers took a gamble on keeping someone in for the drama and got stuck into a position they could not get out of with Nancy O'Dell's decision. Everyone knew it was a mistake, including the other judges. Just watch Nina look at Michael and Heidi when Nancy says who she likes the best. That's the look of Karma biting all three of their as*es. They dug the hole and poor Austin, Nora, Kevin, Alexandra and Vanessa had to lie in it.
50frogs

I do find it amusing when people like Mario who was like, what, 4 days in the show, are ripping her a new a-hole. I could maybe see that he's standing up for their friends or something like that but really, it comes across as very bitter. You lost because you were a lazy bum.

Why is Mario a lazy bum? Because he managed to make some extremely chic in NO TIME. This is what really gets me about the judging. Mario's design, while rather simple, was HOT! Simple, clean
and elegant. And it's the one they CUT HIM FOR! That is just so confounding. Set aside her attitude, strictly from a design standpoint, take a look at Wendy's dress for that challenge. It was completely forgettable. How about Vanessa's? Ill-fitting and quite unattractive. How about AUSTIN's for that matter. A tie-dyed heart - MY STARS - how did he ever think of THAT? Was he a dead head in high school? Some people do A LOT of work and get minimally interesting results.

Face it, they cut Mario for all the wrong reasons. But that's no surprise since that happened almost every week. Mario had a raw, in-your-face quality then, and probably still does.

I totally agree. Have spent time in one grad school where I got no funding and time in one where I did, this funding makes a BIG difference. Everything in the former was about grubbing and trying to stand out to get whatever leftover crumbs were available. In the other situation, everythere was far more cordial and supportive. It is hard to stay positive with a lot of monetary worries. While I can't say the funding made life easy (it was THAT much), it made it much easier and lent to a good overall atmosphere.

Therefore, Vanessa's complaints are very legitimate and not mere griping.

Probably because Wendy had put on her "sweet face" for Vanessa just as she did for Kevin. So, Vanessa was in essence, blind to Wendy's alleged conniving until she heard of it from the other contestants.

Good point. Being at FW has "legs" beyond the show that doesn't resonate with other shows. The judges may have had to bear the machinations of the producers. Who knows. Maybe we'll see more about it tonight. I just hope Cruella gets hers. She can dish it out, we know, but it's been pretty clear that she can't take it. That's why I woulda confronted her pretty quick. I think that's why Jay never had to deal with that. She knows he would have stood up to her. The others were too nice in that regard.

[The point on which I do agree is IF it is continuous emailing from one person, then they are subject to stalker laws. But she is getting a flood of emails from alot of different people (not saying some may not be the same) and each and every one of those people have the right to express their anger at her actions on the show since she so bluntly showed her @$$. The boards didn't nearly crash last Wednesday for no reason - it was because new people were coming onto the boards to post their frustrations. New people are still coming on so get ready, the venom is going to stay potent.

Thanks for at least granting some ground TTB. And I think people can be upset about Austin being out while Wendy stays and posting it here is okey-dokey with me. No thought police.
Where it gets creepy IMHO is when people decide they have to email a "character" -- a real person, for sure, but someone about whom they know a little based on selective editing, to tell them what a *&it they are. The first amendment is of course, irrelevant, since no one has right to harrass someone because they don't like them. Wendy is no more a "public persona" than George Bush for purposes of the law, and I guarantee you honey that a ton of email (whether from the same or different sources) which qualifies as hate mail to the President would result in FBI activity, First Amendment or not.

(BTW, we track down people through email addresses all the time. It's a piece of cake if they are in the states or Western Europe. Also, you could check out the successful cases brought against people who, yes, posted on message boards, items which were considered defamatory about public companies. Not the greatest law, maybe, but it's out there. For those of you who post on multiple boards, well, as you might imagine, you've left a lot of clues.) Finally, even if it were not illegal, it is, simply put, unethical (defined as doing the wrong thing when no one is looking). The fact that Wendy is an untalented jerk does not justify someone else's unethical and maybe vicious behavior towards her. The designers on that show were all adults (well, everyone but Starr) and can take care of themselves. They don't need a bunch of people like us who waste an inordinate amount of time speculating on their lives to protect them.
desperatewannabe
Amen DC. Although I like KS a lot, go to Getty Images and look at the Ralph Lauren FW show. Aviator looks and evening gowns, and so much more beautiful than Kara's, it was breathtaking. (I know, he has a lot more help!) I think the fact that Kara's show was so similar might provide a little juice for Jay, whose looks were beautiful and unusual.

Pictures of him attending fashion week with Kara Saun and Nora are there along with his twelve outfits. Stereotype was definitely my favorite runway show out of the top 3. NEPA loves Jay!!!! Everyone can see Jay's creativity and expertise for themselves. He should obviously be the winner since his line is the most marketable and wearable!!!! Well done Jay! Congrats on your runway show! Adjusted? NO! Wendy STOLE her dress, all it was, was a simple dress with a freakin' cape! There was nothing special about it and Alex's bikini was regional. If you got to Miami and other countries that are close to beaches you see bikinis like that! She shouldn't have been eliminated on the basis that her fabric was similar to another designers. THAT'S CRAP!
