Seriously though, it fully illustrates something I've noticed after spending some time looking through posts on various sections of this message board i.e. that the division here isn't so much between the Wendy haters and the Wendy lovers, but between the creative types and the non-creative/anti-creative types.
I too am creative (visual artist) and have always loved fashion from an artistic/creative standpoint. I don't necessarily buy or wear the clothes that I see, but I adore looking at them, imagining the creativity that went into them, the craft that put them together physically i.e. garment construction, etc. since I also sew. So when I saw Project Runway, I thought prayers for more artsy type TV, vs. the DIY scrapbooking crafty lady crap we normally see, or fashion as makeover shows, had at least been partially answered. I saw every episode from day one, and fully thought it was a competition..almost more like a documentary than a "survivor" type reality show...you know, being on Bravo and all. I mean, had it been on the Fox Channel or something, I may have at least had a clue. And I'm not a huge TV fan, but really worked myself around Bravo's schedule, and when I couldn't watch, I taped the show for later viewing. I so enjoyed seeing the challenges, and watching unfold before me the CREATIVE PROCESS...how the designers would pull from thin air, as creative people do, works of art. Good bad or ugly. And when it was ugly, or slightly missed the mark, I could relate. And when it was great, wow! I mean, a dress out of corn husks or a beach chair. Amazing. I can't even imagine the thought processes there.
So here are all these creative people, more or less like me, wrestling with these almost impossible challenges and deadlines. And one who is talking about strategy, how she wants to use other peoples weaknesses against them to win etc. etc. Hello? I think you're on the wrong show, my dear. There is no way your Big Brother/Survivor tactics are going to help you if you're no good.
And again and again I watched, as this person wasn't eliminated when she clearly should have been. But it was okay, because I knew eventually she would be. And when she turned on Austin and said he wasn't a good leader I thought, okay this is it. The judges will clearly see that she's not a team player...because it is obvious from the footage that she did nothing to contribute to the team i.e. telling Austin about her concerns about the dress as Vanessa tried to do. And Austin, oh Austin. Turning in Vanessa because she didn't sew as well, even though she at least provided you input...where Wendy told you everything you were doing was fantastic, only to stab you in the back for not being a good leader. Basically the same thing with Kevin. If she thought he wasn't a good leader, than as a good part of the TEAM, she should have at least said something rather than playing the passive aggressive sucking up game she played with him. In fact, the only time she talked about being part of the "team" was when she turned her back on her good friend Morgan (the model) and eliminated her because she knew the "team" wanted her gone. Give me a break. The only reason she was able to be nice to Morgan was because she didn't feel threatened by her...as she clearly was by the ages, differing mindsets, lifestyles, and talent of most of the others in the group. Argh.
But as a non-creative person or one who is threatened by creative people, I would not be interested in anyones talent, or clothing construction, etc. etc. I would look for personalities or people I could relate to and root for. So over and above the whole "controversy" factor that Wendy brought to the group, which I think was just a side benefit for Bravo casting, Wendy brought something else. The "O" factor, i.e. appealing to the every woman Oprah Winfrey type watching folks who couldn't care less about art, creativity etc. I think Bravo knew that they wouldn't have a strong enough draw with the purely creative faction, and they needed someone with broader appeal. Like I said, the fact that she chose to meet this challenge as a survivor type reality show and use subversive and passive aggressive tactics as her strategy, vs. focusing completely on creativity, design, and pure talent was probably just a bonus for Bravo, and their ratings. And this isn't to be "elitist" as some have said. I can no more relate to Wendy and her mindset than a non-creative person could relate to that of someone like Austin's or Jay's, Kara Saun's, or even Mario's. Different kinds of minds are just attracted to different things, that's all.
I think the fault here lies in Bravo's inability to clearly communicate that this was no more a competition of creativity than something like Big Brother or Survivor. Sure, they had to pull something passable out in the end to send to Fashion Week...so they did have to have some talent there. And I'm guessing that Banana Republic wouldn't completely compromise what integrity it has by backing a show with no talent. But judging from the results, and from the perspective of a creative person, they may as well have had a bunch of people pretending to be designers to see how many people they could fool as cast someone like Wendy...or at least keep her in as long as they did purely for demographic and/or ratings.
I'm sorry to say it, but you can't have it both ways. You can't have a controversial "reality show" with a broad ratings draw and keep the integrity of a show with an actual premise. Which is why everyone here is so po'd at one another. One group thought this show was a reality show, and in their minds, Wendy played the "best." And the other group is offended to their creative cores that someone who didn't deserve to, got as far as she did. and you can't really blame either side. Both were tricked and mislead to some degree imho. Which is probably fine with Bravo, since the creatives are in the minority...again, probably their rationale in including the "everywoman" in the first place. Oh well. Hopefully another cable channel will take Bravos concept and present it with a little integrity. You know, for the rest of us who don't merely want to be "entertained." *sigh*

She's the only one who's at least from this planet. God forbid if the under dog won! They are all just jealous of her and are acting very childish about it. That's my thoughts.

Do you know why everyone is bashing Wendy is because she came on the show totally prepared to win which is all fine and good but she could have done it without all the two facedness, the lies and the blatant back stabbing when it came time for judging. I have nothing against Wendy she might be the nicest person on earth off the tv screen sort of like Omarosa in that respect but I just didn't like the way she got to the final three when I thought better designers, (Wendy only won two competitions and all her other creations were bashed,) like Austin who got so far on talent alone are out of the competition. Like Jay said it's not Survivor. I respect everyone's opinion and their right to like Wendy I just don't really agree with what all the defendy's are saying.

http://advocate.com/html/stories/933/933_scarlett.aspAn awesome read! *Sigh...Austin need not worry about only enjoying 'fleeting' fame--he's here to stay! I need to meet him one day...
I was quite disgusted with Vanessa's attitude on the reunion show. I think she came across as another 'villainess' in disguise. Although I know she and Austin were friends DURING the show, as he said in the above interview, it just seemed strange that she was still so resentful of her elimination and the 'i can't sew' remark. You'd think she'd have gotten over that by now--Jay was right, it was very 'sour grape'-ish of her--everyone else was eliminated too and no one else basked in jealousy--not even Daniel, out in episode one!

As it comes to originality, I agree that Jay has it. But Kara? I dont't see any originality here. Wendy designs are much cleaner and flattering. I alredy mentioned that Kara put the same deep V-neck sort of line on each of her designs. Onle perfect models can present it. If any real customer will try her dresses there will be saggy breasts effect for bigbrested and flat chest for smallbrested. And this asimmetrical hemline had been seen many years on many designs.

Not that I trust CBS...
''"Project Runway" has given the contestants an invaluable head start.
''I think they've gotten a huge amount of exposure," she said. And there is more to go around: Tommy Hilfiger is slated to launch a similar program, tentatively called ''The Cut," which will air on CBS. The winner will design a collection under the Tommy Hilfiger label."

Seriously though, it fully illustrates something I've noticed after spending some time looking through posts on various sections of this message board i.e. that the division here isn't so much between the Wendy haters and the Wendy lovers, but between the creative types and the non-creative/anti-creative types.
I agree with what you said. The reason so many people have latched onto this show is that it directly spoke to the creative individual who formerly had to suffer through either Martha Stewart or America's Next Top Model--neither of which encouraged an artistic dialogue.
I think some of the Wendy Defendy's, however, aren't necessarily non-creative. I'm not a Wendy fan and was ready to kick my set into the next room when I watched her survive after both the 2055 and postal service challenges. BUT I do think it's made some viewers uncomfortable to watch her hounded by the other designers, especially after last night's episode.
But in the case of Wendy, it's sort of like a reverse 'boy who cried wolf' situation. She was mean and conniving--therefore, anything she did after her antics with Austin and Kevin was suspect to trickery--i.e. whether or not she really 'stole' Kara's fabric is, in my opinion, up for debate. Had she and Kara been friends, sharing fabric would not have been the end of the world--at least, in my opinion. I'm sure Kara would've welcomed Wendy's use of it--but since Wendy royally pissed everyone off, the fact that she took Kara's roll of fabric meant she stole it.
So I mostly agree with your assessment (being an art/theater major m'self:), but I also think there's nothing wrong with feeling a little bad for Wendy either. I think some people want to see people forgiven for their sins...feel free to disagree. I'm not sure what 'side' I'm on, as far as the Wendy debate. I prefer to dart in and out --but I do know that I too am in favor of more shows that encourage creative thought processes and the triumph of beautiful works on display--which I too thought Project Runway would be, rather than a high-drama reality show...

I just wanted to say that after watching the show last night, it's obvious that Austin was the one that marked on Wendy's picture. You could tell by his body language when Heidi was telling them to be grown-ups and confess which one did it, he rolled his eyes and laughed. Then he said, "Well, whoever did it, did it out of uncontrolled anger and it's silly and I don't think we should even be talking about it anymore". Could you be more obvious? I'm sorry to say that I suspected Jay at first but being malicious really isn't his style, he likes to watch things happen, not really make them happen. I was really bummed when Austin was cut but since I know that he's the one that did that, I believe that the decision was the right one. He's obviously got some issues that either stim from a psychological problem or immaturity. Either reason, he needs to grow up or get some help before he tries out the professional world again. I think Austin really made a mistake and lost some fans last night, women with children (which let's face it, probably make up most of the Bravo viewers) are not going to take kindly to his antics.
Oh for heaven's sake! I'll just repost:
According to Austin, it took about a month. I don't know if this has been previously posted (I'm about 90 posts behind, just in this folder, lol!) but in case it hasn't, here is a nice interview with Austin:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the link. Interesting to note:
"The taping was about a month, and we were under complete lock and key the whole time. We could not even go to the corner to get a soda. They would never, ever let you know what you would be doing for the next 10 minutes, so we were anxious the entire time."
That clears the designers of defacing the picture unless they come up with a tape to the contrary.

I am an Oprah lover and I hated Wendy's tactics. I love art, great movies, music, clothes, pretty jewlry and I never thought this show was about surviving. I wrongly thought this show was about finding talent, good designers and they did have some great contestants. The corn husk dress, a dress made out of a lawn chair who would have thought it could be done! Jay is great, Kara is great I thought Vanessa and Austin were great as well. Wendy left me speechless with her attitude...and to be a mother behaving like that.

WELL SAID! >>>APPLAUSE!!!<<< I swear, you should be a public speaker! You understood and laid out the two sides PERFECTLY!
Well written thoughts, but I kind of think some of what you are saying is crap. I don't like Wendy because she is a big bad survivor who tricked all these people, called people out when she saw their weaknesses, or kicked someone in the head when she was flying around on her broomstick. I like Wendy because I like her designs! Almost every outfit on the show she has done I have liked, most of the designs on her web site I like, and I have liked almost all of her FW collection. Even the pieces I didn't like I could see them being easily altered to be more appealing.
I think the writer of this article, as a creative person, somehow feels threatened by Wendy or by "non-creative" people as I think I and others have been called, and why? For no reason at all. There isn't a need to try to split people into two groups: its just a waste of time. Most of the Wendy-supporters on this site (the ones that have been here for a while) have stated repeatedly why we like her and the Wendy-haters always spin out some crap like that this article was so whole-heartedly slinging. Like I have said a million times before (and I am seriously contemplating not saying it again and not defending my thoughts again because I, like many others on the various sides, am beginning to feel like I am a broken record) think she is talented. It may not be a talent that you can appreciate, but she is talented!
Also, as for her being on the show, you cannot say she is there because the producers wanted drama (and don't dare quote that article because it said the producers were HOPING for that kind of drama, not altering the sequence of events to get it). Wendy is there because she has always designed things that were above some others, though the judges did not feel they were the best in most cases. Also, rewatching a show this evening, (it was either the post office one or the 2055 one), Tim said that from that point on, it wasn't about who was the best (in the judges opinions) anymore, it was about who was the worst, and the people that left from that point on were clearly the worst in one way or another. Tim also said from then on everything was mostly going to be taken on a challenge-to-challenge basis. I'm sorry to take away Wendy's broomstick and sweep some of you guys misplaced bitterness out of the door, but Wendy is there because she deserves to be. Period.

Whatever she did, she's in the final 3. The way some people go on you would think she had poisoned half the other designers and buried the other half alive in order to win.
She practically did.

Wendy...I will never understand how she landed in the top 3 after having designs that would fall apart on the runway!
In one review of her collection at FW the critic said that she had a zipper hanging from one of her dresses.

Who else could have been carried further than they deserved. Rob maybe? Haven't you read the disclaimer? Producers do affect the outcome. My belief is that the judges get to a point where they ID the two weakest showings and the producers decide which one of the 2 gets axed. This might explain the voice-overs, in part. Since Wendy has survived a number of those situations, the producers would be in position to ensure that she stayed (or in the Starr v. Rob episode, that Rob stayed).

Good reasoning and yes, it does explain the voiceovers.

Oh, please. To acuse anyone including Wendy, of using a marker on the picture is of very poor taste. Where's your evidence? Aren't people innocent unless evidence proves it otherwise? It could have been the ghost of Adolf Hitler for all I know! How do you know Austin did? You must have special super powers.
As for Austin's antics, where you ever young? They aren't worse than any other contestant playing around or any other reality show antics. Because we all KNOW reality shows are uplifting, PG rated entertainment. Ah, yes. The Bachelor indeed is about good morals. The Swan should be watched by every 13 year old in the counrty and we all know NO ONE on America's Next Top Model ever gets drunk or catty or both.
Chill. It's a TV show. And I don't think a person's lifestyle has anyhting to do with their talent. If that's the case, hurry and go burn a Picasso, after all he had more affairs than Captain Kirk and was a naughty, naughty boy.
I mean, if personal lifestyle comes into place then we should dish out the dirt on all the contestants. But the show isn't called Most Well Behaved Designer.

I agree with you. Wendy needs soooo much guidance..she is more like a dress maker which was Nora's problem with her wedding dress.
I noticed also that when Wendy worked in teams she needed a lot of guidance and when she didn't get it she trashed the leaders (ie, Austin and the other guy). It's as if she no real vision.
That post office unform was just a slighly changed version of what they already wear and I for 1 have NEVER seen pleats on the side of pants! When I saw that I was like what the!! Robert basically handed her the 3rd position...with what he did in that challenge. but with that being said there were other eliminations that design wise was miles ahead of Wendys designs. That 2055 design was awful! Oh my goodness....

Hi TTB;
I've been avidly enjoying your posts, but this by far is my absolute favorite . . . I laughed out loud. BTW - I am completely in love with Kayan - sorry, he's the hottest in my book. I will say, Thom amazes me with his work. You notice on that show that the QE guys are positioned as authorities on their niches? That's what a good designer does, steers the client towards what is good, useful, beautiful - can you imagine if the QE guys let those straight guys steamroller over them and give them directions . . . like the Wendy defendy's think designing really is??? Oh, perish the thought!!
Thanks
You know that's a good way of thinking about it! An SG trying to makeover the boys - ooo! Scary!
Here's a gem for you - Kyan is a TOTAL sweetheart! All the boys are nice beyond belief. Kyan has an easy-going manner, calming voice, and is unbelieveably more attractive up close than on tv! A most impressive soul - if he makes an appearance anywhere near you, go see him!

mmm, does anyone else think that Austin somewhat resembles Carson (the Fashion guy from Queer Eye)in certain ways? She started letting her bitterness show before then. Some of her ire was justified but she went too far in her expression of things. I guess she thought the show would boost her career and it's had the opposite effect, in addition to the contest not living up to her apriori expectations. Some people can adjust and make lemonade from lemons. Others can't. Maybe she tried while there but the sewing kits sent and drop in sales probably has put a lot of pressure on her. I don't get it, because last night's show was an OPPORTUNITY for her to turn this trend around. As some have said, Nora seemed quite level-headed and grew as a result of things. Jay in some sense has grown since he made a good (and serious) showing for himself, beyond his typically outrageous clothes. Austin made a pretty good showing for himself, though some might dispute either the comment closing the "who defaced the photo?" discussion and/or his "doily" clothes. I thought he was fine.
I think what this showed is that Jay stepped up to the pressure of FW and handled it. Wendy didn't change much, other than her exterior appearance. Kara let stuff finally get to her, rightly or wrongly.

You know what Virgo, I to thought that there was a chance that Wendy did it (drew the line on her daughters picture). It would be consistent with the tactics she used in the whole show.
I was surprised she cried like she did after the way she "threw other designers under the bus". The whole time she was conniving and to be surprised that other contestants hated her..I was like, if you gonna play the game a certain way then expect the same thing back!

Austin- I think he is a great designer, and he will go far. I think he should have been more versitile in his design styles. I must say that I was disappointed in the fact that he dissed Kara Shaun in his extended exit interview.
Jay- He is a great designer, with a wonderful personality. I think he needs to be more versitile in his design style also. I agree with Austin, Jay is stuck in his own world.
Wendy- I think was kept on the show for rating. I agree with Daniel, she relied on her tricks to get ahead. I undersand her position as it relates to age and motherhood, but is being a top designer worth hurting people.I think she was jealous of Kara Shaun
Kara- I think she a great designer and deserves to win.She takes the challenge to heart, and put all her effort into her designs. I feel like she was willing to help everyone on the show, even Wendy. I don't think she preaches too much, and think she brings the truth. She was right, winning isn't everything in the world.
Kevin- I think he is a good designer, but he isn't the best leader. He couldn't assume a leadership role and take control.
Starr- I think she isn't a good designer at all. I felt sorry for her when she lost, I know that being on this show meant a lot to her.
Vannessa- She needs to get a grip, and have a better attitude. Life is too short to be negative.
Robert- He was cute, but a average designer. I think he will go far with his personality and good looks.
Alexander- I think she was a good designer. I was surprised to hear her say negative things about Wendy.
Nora- She is a good designer, but can't handle pressure. I think she was tired and wanted to leave the show. I am sure she will do well in the future

Compared to Kevin's "no more drama" -- which in context was understandable considering how Morgan almost did him in -- Wendy set Morgan up completely. And FOR NO REASON. All of the defenders of her gamesmanship forget this part. That referenced article that calls Wendy "mean-spirited" isn't making it up. And that speech to Morgan seemed calculated to inflict pain -- both to Morgan and to Melissa.
Don't you think?

I posted for the first time at 12:07am this morning and left my opinion about the Wendy thing there.
Here's my opinion about the designer's.
I think Kevin is under-rated. I've worked with business owners like Kevin. They're still decisive in their own way...lead very quietly....gain consensus and collaba ration....In his last challenge.....I dn't htink his design was that far off. I don't think the POD concept worked...and I think if all the designers really thought that it was critical....they would ahve ALL spoken up. Kevin's design was, as he said the most tailored of the group. It had some deconstruction....enough for me as a consumer to feel I had a choice. I felt Kevin led when he needed to, backed off when it worked.
Jay. I think a lot of you kinda checked in for Jay's antic's and missed his subtle remarks when he was serious. I beleive in one segmant when everyone was partying, Jay chose to sleep early. There were other glimpses into his serious side. As far as his designs were concerned. They were diverse, edgy, pretty and wearable. I remember when he was loathing to do that earlier dress...and he got inspired by the Empire State Building. The dress was beautiful and well thought out. I think (despite what y'all see as his antic's) Jay has grown the most.
Austin. Austin is couture. Austin is flamboyant. Austin has talent. And Austin gets emotional,....gossip-y....etc....Austin could definitely have his own design firm, as long as he has a very patient close right hand to keep him on tract.
Wendy. Tim said it. Wendy is mainstream. There is a market for her stuff. All one needs to do is walk through Middle America and see how high couture is redefined for the everyday woaman. If I recall a lonnnnng time ago a top designer designed the current Postal Uniforms. And as I remember they weren't a big departure from what preceded them. Once the designers got that assignment I commented to my daughter's about the previously "designed" uniforms. In the real world, and if most of postal workers had to choose which uniforms they'd pic...I'd bet Wendy AND Kara Saun's would be picked.
Nora. I think she has talent. Lot's of it. I also think Nora has a loyt of maturing to do. Need's to learn some people skills. Needs to learn how to get a long with others and not let her anger get to her.
Robert. Where have y'all been when you thought the producer's kept Wendy on becuase she was a [expletive deleted]? LOL. I thought they brought him back 'cause he was the only good lookin' man on the show. Robert has some talent. Can be developed. He's got a great personality, is cute....Women will have Robert design for him just to have him fawn all over them.
Vanessa and Alexandra. I lump these two together. I think they have enough talent to be a junior label for a bigger designer. Not worker bee's. Giving autonomy unitl they mature as designer's.
Star, Daniel and Mario. Oh God. Their design's were not even memorable. I keep having to go into their portfolio's to rememeber them. If they choose to stay in fashion, I predict they'll be working for other designer's....where they can't do much damage without direct supervision.
And of course Kara Saun. Right now I think she's showed her merit's. I love all of her design's. Their edgy and pretty enough me to wear them. She's showed the ability to lead and to co-lead. She has showed her ability to supervise, and her ability to work as a team member.
Who would have been my 3 choices;
Kara Saun, Jay and Kevin or Kara Saun, Jay and Austin.
Yet...........I totally "get" why Wendy was chosen.
Lookin' forward to next week.
I hope the producer's give all the contestants a check. They all deserve to receive something for their hard work, for having their lives exposed....and damn for having a bazillion people write about them on this board, and everything else they've endured.
I wish all of them well.
Looking forward to more Project Runway's.
Ps) I would have like to see the models as the panel of judges. they that would have been interesting !!

Wendy is a sociopath,a ruthless individual who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. One of the symptoms is her obvious joy at others pain, the way she smiled at others misfortune. She was feeding off that. I thought her pacing and muttering to herself was really scary. If she is lucky enough to win and end up at BR she will pick a victim and weave a web of lies around them and not be happy til she has their job,the whole time appearing to be the innocent one. If it had'nt been for Tim she would never have won the last challenge. He(darth [expletive deleted] Vader) had to fix her dress so she would win the last challenge. The producers had that in mind all along.
