ROFL!! Ok I was just relaxing catching up on posts and smiling at the other I-want-to-date-Kevin fans when this hit me...too funny!

So on the site, you can see that the designers have made tshirts for their fans that you can buy for $25. Notice on Starr's tshirt, she has drawn a picture of her Banana Republic LOSING dress. This means that her shirt was designed AFTER she was eliminated. Nora's says "WHAT IS THIS MESS?" as if to refer to her losing the pattern piece whihc led to her getting kicked off the next week.

There are three designers who HAVE NOT made tshirts to sell-- Austen, Robert, and Kevin. Can this mean that they were not eliminated??? The show has only been filmed up until the last three contestants, and then they resume filming later between those three. So im asking-- could it be that this means Robert Austen and Kevin are the final three who go to fashion week?

In reference to Austin

Don't delude yourself that he's some mild-mannered sweetie. He's just more careful than Wendy not to let it show.

After all of his crying and drama backstage and on stage "Working with my dream team, with what I think is a dream job" and "I just love both of them so much" He turned on Wendy as fast as she turned on him. Wailing for Vanessa's departure but dancing his ass off when the final credits were rolling.

Personally, if I liked both of my teammates but one of them turned on me for a problem that was never communicated towards me, I would turn on them as fast as I could. Why? What Wendy did is enough to make me reconsider my opinion of her, were I Austin. If Wendy plays the game, beat her. (Sorry to say, no one won).

I believe that Austin's feelings were heartfelt, because if I had lost a teammate that I was friends with, I would be crying too. There were only one or two people consoling him, and the rest were talking to Vanessa, so the accusations of him stealing the show don't have much strength. I'm sure that they had time to say goodbye before she left. After that, what can you do? He had a good cry, and I bet the teammates had coaxed him into being happy again... I would have.

Out of the mouths of babes comes wisdom. Hard to believe isn't it; emotion these days seems to have become a 4 letter word. People would rather see stoic automatons than see what someone is feeling. And if you turn your back to becoming a robot, then it's "drama".

In court, why do people break down on the stand? Don't they know it's a court and they're only there to give testimony? Can't they save that for outside?

Beauty contestants, when they win - why do they cry? It's a beauty pageant, they're there to show their legs not tears.

Just a couple of examples. Tears are gonna flow.

It seems to me that a lot of people are misunderstanding the challenges and why people won and lost. I'll give an explanation:

CHALLENGE 1: Innovation. The challenge was to take unconventional items and turn them into something good-looking. The ten non-losers succeeded in either going with very strange items (Nora, Robert, Starr, Vanessa, Wendy) or making it look good (Alexandra, Jay, Kara, Kevin, Mario). Austin won because his cornhusk dress was both. Daniel lost because he took a garbage bag and butcher paper and made it look like a garbage bag and butcher paper -- not innovative.

CHALLENGE 2: Vision/Sell Your Vision. This challenge meant two things: show you think outside the box, and convince buyers of that. Kara's professionalism and design skills got her the $405 bid and the win. Likewise, Mario's laziness and over-simplicity showed that he didn't care as much for his vision as the others, including the much-hated Wendy (I love you, Wendy). That's why Mario lost.

CHALLENGE 3: Commercial Appeal. The Appeal factor not only meant how a design would appeal to customers, but also to the store carrying the design. This is why Wendy won. Her design fit the aestethic BR was looking for, was easy to construct, and looked good, too. Some, like Jay's, were a little too complex for BR. Others, like Robert's, were not very appealing. Starr failed on all accounts -- her design was ugly, looked hard-to-make, and her whole wardrobe was unappealing. Goodbye.

CHALLENGE 4: Collaboration. This challenge meant working with AND critiquing other people. The ultimate goal in this was to show how well you can work with other to make something. Kevin won because his design worked with Sarah Hudson well and he kept working on the design even when Nora was being uncooperative. Nora's behavior would have been more than enough for elimination if not for Vanessa's fatal mistake. How can you work with other people if you can't work with yourself? She admitted so many times she cannot sew, and this is bad in itself. But to confess your weakness to the judges AND not defend your weakness? Sorry, Vanessa, you're out.

CHALLENGE 5: Working with a Client. Once again, two important goals: make the client happy, and don't sell yourself out. Kara kept true to her own traditions and made a dress that was beatiful, conventional and unique at the same time, and most importantly the model loved it. Nora's problem was that she let Melissa control her and not let any of Nora's creativity show. In Nora's case, Melissa was not a client -- she was an authority figure. Fatal mistake, Nora.

Now, looking ahead, it seems the theme of Challenge 6 may be self-management or something. The 5-hour deadline and the clue on conduct at the party playing a role are signs of this. I'd also like to see a theme where they have to design something other than dresses, like accesories (hats, purses, shoes, etc.) or men's clothing (using the model's boyfriends).

I BOW TO YOU (even though you like Wendy)! THAT WAS A PERFECT EXPLANATION!!

I know. I was really wondering for a while there which team he bats for, but I've got a hunch that he might be ok with gals. Oh, what the hell am I saying anyway... he's only a pipedream. (But a girl can dream, can't she?!)

This is excellent news! I've been a little worried that he's going to get the axe. From what Nora indicated about his working style, and Tim's comments about the making of his wedding dress, I'm a little worried that on one of these challenges he's not going to finish his garment.

Sorry guys, I do not really see anything in Kevin's designs. Yeah, Vladi, I have to admit that I'm not the hugest fan of his for his designs--although I think they're strong--I think the other designers have a slight edge over his. In fact, I had to look up his "envy" design again because I couldn't remember what it was, and I have to agree that it's a bit shapeless. I liked his wedding dress though. It thought it was really classy. Apparently Olga didn't have much fun wearing it, though.

Kara is too strong not to be included in the winners list, so is Jay. Austin is very strong too but he's got to tighten those ropes because he can't afford another "wedding dress" mess.
Senka
Mostly in response to Tejayes, but just to keep it correctly threaded.

I totally agree 100% with Tejayes description of the challenges. This is why some are considered winners (like the Wendy BR dress), and others loosers (like Nora's wedding gown). This is also why many times some wery good designs were considered just "safe" (like Jay's Chrysler BR dress). It is important to actually understand the limits of the challenges to understand how the eliminations are going. I do sincerely think that the judges care less about the personality or physical appearance of the designers than of their response to the challenge.

I'm really impressed with all of these designers, really. They're all really interesting and inspiring and loveable, and they've ignited in me a much more fervent interest in fashion. I think I'm going to hit a newstand and pick up a few hardcore fashion magazines, just to see what's going on in the rest of the fashion world.

Do you read ELLE at all? I'm fourteen so I read elleGIRL, and I have to say it is the best magazine ever! I'm not exactly the most conservative type, and all the stuff in Seventeen and COSMO I often see as disinteresting and hokey. (although the boho section in seventeen is slammin')

ElleGIRL is cool because it's not "This is in! Buy this!" but really finding your own style and then matching it with what's popular in the season. The slogan is "Dare to be different" and it definitely shows. They have interviews with upcoming indie singers, genuine vintage finds, and TRES COOL spreads.

But it all depends on your age, I guess... =)

Okay, you got me on that point. The show is about designing beautiful clothing and not about seeing sexy, shirtless men. But, forgive me, I want both!!!!!!!!!!! I hope Robert stays on his feet and keeps undressing.

My list of favorite designers, in order:

1. Kara
2. Austin
3. Robert
4. Jay
5. Austin
6. Kevin
7. Alexandra
8. Wendy

it's kind of hard to order them, they're all so great, but that's what I came up with! It dpends on the challenge who I like the best.. but overall, I've always liked Jay, Kara and Austin's designs! Robert and Alexandra.. and Kevin.. I still got love for ya!! I'm not really feelin' Wendy! Sorry...

It's interesting, debating what REAL fashion is. My friend Lindsey always used to joke that if she made it big in the fashion world she'd design clothes that actual women could wear.
Walking through any usual public place-a college campus, high schools, the mall, a resturant-how many bodies do you see that are identical to the models'? That could actually WEAR and pull off some of those designs.
I am a 5 foot 110 pound gal with curves in all the right places. It's IMPOSSIBLE for me to wear any of, say, Alexandria's designs, for exmaple.
Fashion needs to look nice not only on the models but on the consumer as a whole. Despite what Hollywood tells us, we are not a country of Alexandrias and Roberts. We're slightly overweight and, as a general public, not that glamorous.
Show me a fashion designer who takes a slightly-drab-and-flab public and makes them look great anyway!
I think Jay has enoromous potential in that. I could wear his designs despite my un-model-like build. Examining the designs, I also see this potential in Austin, who seems to be shying away from 'sleek' styles, like Alexandria's, which always remind me of drapes. I mean, seriously, you'd have to be uber thin to wear her outfits!
Our country may have an overweight problem, but I'm not sure anoxeria is the answer.
I also believed Nora has this possibility (this is just my own little homage) because her age helped her connect with my generation, the 18 to 34-ers. We're the biggest group of consumers, followed closely by teenage girls. Watch the market and think about what we would like; something you can wear to school or wear to a party that will look hot, but not desperate.

My pick for the final three: Austin, Jay and Kara.

This post also proves that people much more reasonable than I can come to the same conclusion for practical reasons.
ajurnarmat
Actually, Kevin is most interested in dates with Russian girls: he's got a profile up at a Russian mailorder bride website!!! (Did you notice that he picked Olga two weeks in a row?)

Anyway, I'm new to this message board. My question: where can I send Austin flowers and chocolate? He is one of the most exquisite creatures I have seen in all my life. I know he's mostly gay (according to T.O.N.Y., he IDs as a mostly gay bisexual -- I know, the fact that he's not completely homo shocked me too!) and I'm sure he's spoken for (hell, so am I!), but he ought to know what dreams he inspires! I just want to fill his mailbox up with good things, because he deserves them.

I'm pretty positive that Jay or Kara Saun will take all in the end. I like both of them, but Kara seems like she's already got a good thing going and is hardly hurting for work. That said, I am voting for Jay -- my girlfriend is from his hometown, give or take a few miles, and according to her he's a DIY punk after my own heart. (I'd like to see Austin take home first place, but I don't see it happening despite his immense talents. I have a feeling this is NOT the last we'll hear or see of him OR his designs, however.)
corprip
I just looked at Starr's T-shirt for Project Runway, and I noticed something- she was confusing art deco with art nouveau. The whole style of the drawing invokes art noveau, and if this is what Starr had in mind when she was designing her dress then it's no wonder she bombed. She totally didn't get it!
paillette
I just learned that NY fashion week begins on 4 February, and continues through the next week. The clothes shown will be collections for Fall 05. The wednesday of fashion week would correspond, I think, to week nine of PR. I wonder if the three finalists are showing at this fashion week? Have they had enough time since the end of the show's filming to produce an entire runway collection? Will PR film the runway and then show it the following week? Will they get any reviews or notices?

This likely is the moment when the show's episodes suddenly hit "real time," so to speak.

On another topic:

"I finally lugged out the old dictionary and looked up the word "paillette" (a small shiny ornament, spangle)."

Pailletes are in the sequin family. The main difference is that regular sequins are attached to the fabric in the center, while pailletes are attached through a little hole placed off-center, making them more mobile than sequins. Also, pailletes often have a matte, rather than a shiny, finish.
Xanalina
I think Kara is going to win in the end, but that seems kind of boring. Kara seems to experianced to be on this show. She's worked with Queen Latifah and already has her name out there. I think I'd like Jay to win even though he's not my favorite.

P.S. Did anyone else see Heidi Klum on Conan O'Brien last night. They talked about project runway and apparently Conan's wife is a fan of the show.

Hmmm...a pretty sound and interesting theory! I had her pegged pretty solidly for the top three until you pointed that out. Alexandra and Jay are my favorites, hands down. My partner Greg likes Kara the most.
Jay's caustic, rapidfire wit is the best thing about the show, and his work continues to be among the best.
Alexandra is a doll, and i fancy her the prettiest one on the show. I have loved all her work and i am disappointed that she doesn't ever get any good copy. Her pantyhose dress from episode #1 remains this fans' overall fave. I was however a little surprised that Alexandra chose to boot kevin a few shows back, who i actually really like as well. He us a little bland, but his stuff is always good.
austin is hit or miss, in a big way. i admit i find him fascinating and hilarious and he adds a lot to the show, but i never find myself pulling for him.
I can't really stand Wendy. It would be nice to spend next Wednesday without her.
Robert is a cutie. He and Alexardra would make beautiful babies. his wedding dress was great work.

Actually, it's just a stereotype. I went to fashion school with straight male fashion designers who were just as talented as the gay males. Maybe there's confusion as to where true talent really lies---and it's not about our exterior. If there's no talent to back up the hype, then all you have is an image to live up to.

As far as Austin being the "gay stereotype", I think he is who he is. There are some gay men out there who ARE very feminine and can be viewed as "stereotypical". But to think that the producers would pick someone to fulfill that steroetype is ludicrous. They picked him b/c he is creative and talented--remember, he made a dress out of CORNHUSKS, people! The fact that he is gay and feminine is secondary. I mean, Jay is gay and queeny too--no qualms about him? Kevin is gay too...so to think that it is "sad" that they picked a "stereotype" of a gay man is something that those of you who think being a feminine creative gay man is something to be ashamed of something to think about. It is YOUR prejudices that are on display now.

I was looking in at the designers pages and at what schools they went to and I noticed that none of them went to Parsons, where the show takes place. Parsons is supposed to be a really good school so I'm surprised no designers from there made it on the show.

It's because everyone who graduates from Parsons gets a job when they're out. Not our kids. They have to work from the bottom up.

hey justtzujit. i know this is really late, but i've been busy with school. anyways, i read your post about us being twins. my style is mostly everything. i like to mix and match anything that i think has a kool look about it. i don't know if you'd consider minnesota to have a low population, but i live close enough to the mall of america to go shopping there every weekend if i wanted to. so i guess i have more of a choice and options to pick from for my style. you should come and visit the mall. it's pretty big, and there's tons of stores. you'd really like it.

Well, I'm just a little bit older than you ;-), but I might take a look at ElleGirl. It sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the tip. And yeah, I like Elle a lot. I'm thinking I've got to get W or something.

"Yeah! I'm strangely happy that there are other fans of Kevin out there. (Romantic competition be damned!) Maybe we can form a fan club and coerce Bravo to make a make a "win a date with Kevin Johnn" show."

Hmmmmm.......
Honestly, girls, I got the impression Kevin might be more interested in a date with Austin.
BTW, if anyone is interested, I saw a New York Fashion Week schedule for 2001 that had Kevin Johnn on it, right between Momo Falana and Geoffery Beene.....
Interesting, eh??

Sorry guys, I do not really see anything in Kevin's designs. His shower curtain creation (first episode) looked like one big sponge on the runway, he made a horrible shapeless dress for Envy challenge, his wedding dress looked like it was designed for an 80-year old bride, and I did not really care for his winning Rock-N-Roll outfit. The only decent dress that he designed was the one for BR challenge.
Just my opinion.

This has nothing to do with a "win a date with Kevin night" ... if I won such a date, I sure wouldn't have him make a dress for me!! <wink>

AuntieKrabby, I'm right there with ya! Who needs clothes when they're on a date with Kevin?! ;-) Oops, did I write that out loud?

I LOVE AUSTIN!!! I want him to be my best friend. I hope he goes all the way to fashion week. I, like Austin, love classic fashion and I know he can bring back the Audrey Hepburn/Grace Kelly look! I would wear it.

Very well said! One thing though - Jay, Austin, and Mario are the gay guys...Kevin and Robert are straight. But still, VERY well said!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't feel bad- I did the same thing. I didn't mean to...it's silly to get so worked up over a TV show, but that swimsuit was the epitomy of glamour. So gorgeous!
