I hate to say this but i have more talant then these people and i just sew in my basement. If they keep there drama attitude there going to loose just because there attitude will change them inside and out. there not trying as hard as i would. Thats why i should win the contest.

You are referring to they--who are "they"? Do you mean all of the designers?
I hardly think that after seeing one episode you could declare that none of them are trying.

Keep in mind.. this is on TV!! I mean, there's got to be drama.. or what would this be? People sewing and making outfits? Come on people... it's Television! It may be a contest, yes, but it's also a show. Key word: SHOW The only "reality TV" you would get is hidden cameras in people homes.. everything else is non-scripted television drama and comedy!!!!

My favorite was Nora's dress, and Penis Envy was great too. As much as I love Austin, I didn't like his dress this week. He had a good concept, but I just couldn't click with the dress. I actually liked the bullet holes better.

.....with all the students in fashion design schools I can't believe this is the best of the best...maybe the tryouts were not publicized enough...it'll be interesting to compare these to Hilfiger's reality show coming up....what do you think?

What makes you say that? They could possibly be the best of the best, how many fashion design schools teach how to create an 'out on the town' gown out of grocery store items?
Based on the material they have to work on (so far) and the time limits, I think they are doing great work!!

I don't purport to know what the Banana Republic aesthetic is, but I thought Robert's leopard dress, with its pleats and butter yellow inserts, was gorgeous. I admire his daring in creating the final rendering. But he would have scored higher with the cat. I must add that he is totally hot. And it's not just his smile and exotic good looks. His comfort and consolation for Starr seemed genuine and he seems to be a nice guy with talent, integrity and a big future.

It's really mysterious that Wendy took the win home this episode. Her dress looked like a funeral dress and the model looked like a dracula.

....I think the judges threw Wendy a bone this episode...I would be really surprised if she won...she was very smart though in noticing that capes were in their stores and then making a design that had a cape also...I think that's what got her over...it seems she can only make a few simpler things like party dresses and I think that also saved her....the lawyer who was booted also could only do simple things...so now the people who really have substantial design skills will be left in the end...Wendy and the lawyer I feel were there for entertainment value....what do all of you think?
riof
December 16, 2004 - 12:59 PM
....don't be so quick to say who will win...some of the group is there I feel for entertainment value...if you can only sew a little and can put together a basic party dress then I don't think you have the same skills as someone who can do that plus drape, tailor, sketch, and has years of design school behind them....that is why I feel the lawyer got booted, that is why I don't think Wendy will last, all of their real skills will come out as the show continues...Mario issue was that he showed the judges he was lazy and not willing to work hard and give it his all....I think it's more to it than designing ....in Tom Ford's book he said most people get their jobs in fashion based heavily on how they look.....what do you think of that?

Hello everyone. First off let me introduce myself, my name is Bea (pronounced Bee)I'm quite young 15 to be exact. and i love fashion beyond reason. My life revolves around fashion. I have had my share of Fashion Faux Pas but i must admit being young with strict parents doesn't give me much room to get every piece of couture i want, no i need. haha.
I don't know where this thread is so i'll start from episode 1.
Loves:
Austin - loved his design even though he didn't know he had to put it in the fridge, it still turned out magnificent.
Nora - Her dress litterally looked totally wear-able. i loved it, very different, not alot of people went for the unobvious solutions.
Kara - very sexy chic, a little trashy with the gold and barely-there clothes, but it was still very nice. With the paint. Morgan, made a mistake of showing up late because her mom wasn't around to wake her up, she should grown up and get an alarm clock. but her company firing her is a bit much but they have to do what they have to do.
Hates:
Starr - It was too flashy, dont get me wrong i love BAM clothing that catches your eye, but this was a bit clownish i know everyone has been using that word to explain it but i think that's the only way to explain it.
Wendy - WHERE ARE THE CLOTHES!! i know that's what the judes said, but i'm serious there aren't even panties i think those were the model's. If you're going to make CLOTHES make sure it's actually clothes. I wouldn't even care if she used the boring garbage bag as a backdrop she still should have covered her model up.
Daniel - Cute and boring, i think if he didn't spend so much time on the butcher paper he would have came up with something much better.
WINNER:GREAT CHOICE!
LOSER: Ok choice i would have gone with starr but her design was more innovative so yea.
Episode 2 didnt' think i'd write so much so i'll try to sum it up in like 3 words hehe.
Loves:
Jay - very [expletive deleted]. i like it. everyone went for a gown or something completely classy, but he went total rebel and bitchy i love it.
Robert - very Female manly. i like it i would totally wear it.
Mario - it was simple and "plain" but i still think it portrays life's envy so well. the blood stains and the model pulled it off beautifully. the middle finger a bit much, i would have gone with a mute mouthing like "and what [expletive deleted]?!" but hey he did what he did.
Hates:
Wendy - i liked the idea, but she didnt seem to excute it that well.
Starr - tumor. good idea, but a bit to intense.
WINNER: GOOD
LOSER: BAAAAD!!! i thought he shouldn't have been voted off, he showed envy and its results beautifully. I dont know if i would have wanted wendy or starr off.
Episode 3.
Loves:
I LOVED AUSTIN'S!! he is incredible i love that man! haha. even though it was not holiday-ish it was the best dress out there.
Hates:
Starr - i don't know but all her designs just seem a bit child-ish. this one was not banana at all. If she were a shopper she should have known to go with a more nuetral color with the black rather than the dark pink. and the trim was a bit to festive.
WINNER:good. followed the banana rule, even though Austin should have gotten it, but it wasn't "holiday" it was more spring afternoon tea.
LOSER: GREAT! finally, not to be mean but i don't think she could keep up on her own. she has such big bright ideas, but no one to tame her.
well sorry for the long post. thank you to everyone who attempt to read this long thing.

I know this is like a week late, but I just found the message boards and signed up. I must say I loved the idea of Penis Envy that Robert did. When I saw his outfit on the model (cause I missed part of the show) it was the first thing that popped into my mind. I also liked Vanessa's take on the envy by presenting a woman who was pregnant. Very clever!

Can anyone help me with information on the black and white striped sofa seen on the Project Runway set? I thought that on one episode they had mentioned it being a Drexel Heritage item but if it is I cannot find it anyway on any Drexel Heritage Web Site. I am dying to purchase this for my apartment and would appreciate any information anyone can give me. I have emailed Project Runway three times but all I get in return is an automated message with no information. Thanks for any help

MissBea, good eye. I missed eps 1 & 3, so I based my opinions on the photos.
Ep 1:
Love - actually, Mario, even though he broke a rule of mine. Too much expanse of upper chest, but the style is classic and it looks like a garment.
Also liked Austin. He truly understands garment structure.
Hate - Wendy. Daniel's "dress" looked like a low-budget (very low-budget) sci-fi costume, but at least it looked like something.
Winner - good choice
Loser - good choice
Ep 2
Love - Kara (except for the hat). Good color and shape.
Also liked Nora and Robert.
Hate - Kevin. Totally 80s! Didn't like the style then either.
Winner - good choice
Loser - bad choice (I'd place 5 dresses below Mario as worst. His was simply...simple.)
Ep 3 - Very pleased to see a challenge to make real clothes!
Love - Austin. Wow. Wow and a little bit more wow. Here his garment construction knowledge really stands out. The dress would look good on real women! I want that dress.
Also liked Kevin and Alexandra.
Hate - Starr. Poor Starr.
Winner - bad choice. I think Austin's dress was a stand-out.
Loser - good choice. Poor Starr.
That was fun. I also wrote more than I intended, but I'm a seamstress and a fashion watcher.

Thank you! I couldn't believe that one of the judges said he/she couldn't picture a real woman wearing that dress! My jaw dropped: are you kidding? I'd wear it in a heartbeat (if I were 5'9" and had $300 lying around)! Maybe I've got a more retro-type taste than others, but I know for a fact that nearly any woman would love to wear that.

Yes, I agree. Her black funeral "party" dress was so plain but I am not a big fan of Banana Republic anyway, because they are so plain and simple. BR supplied beautiful fabrics, though. Austin's dress was pretty, but like the judges questioned "would women really wear such a frou-frou dress?". I liked Jay's dress the best but what was up with the hemline on the bottom of the dress?

December 19, 2004 - 09:27 PM
I think that Wendy's dress won mostly because it would be easy for Banana Republic to reproduce. Did you notice how often the judges commented on the construction of the garments and how complicated some of them were? More complicated = more labor = less profits for BR. I like Austin's the best. Although Wendy's wasn't bad, I think it came down to a financial decision more than anything.

#1: Like everyone else, I was blown away by Austin's corn husk dress. The colors were lovely, especially before it dried out. It looked a little worse the next day, but I'm glad the judges gave him the top score. As for the loser: I think Daniel really blew it with his materials. Compare his use of garbage bags to Vanessa's: she actually made her dress look like punky feathers or something, while his just looked like... a garbage bag. And the stiff butcher paper was just stupid. However, Starr's design was simply hideous. I probably would've aced her, but I didn't think it was entirely unjust to choose Daniel. I would have put Vanessa in second place; Kudos also to Nora for innovation and a nice clean line.
#2: Nora's dress was a disappointment. I liked the idea, but with something that minimalist, the execution has to be flawless for it to work. Her seams weren't flat, and the standup collar looked funny.
Vanessa's idea of maternity envy was smart; Robert's on penis envy was stupid. Both well executed, though.
As for the judging: I think Kara's idea (envy-->war, great!), design, and execution were flawless. A very well-deserved win. The elimination of whatshisname was justified: the dress was really a nothing dress, and the idea ("they envied her, so they shot her") was nothing short of puerile. Starr's dress for #2 was her best work... which ain't saying much.
#3: I though Alexandra's, and especially Wendy's, dresses were both boring. Like everyone else, I assume the price point had something to do with Wendy's win over some of the others.
Who knew Jay could pull that off? Loved the bodice, though I would have preferred the skirt in the same ivory color, instead of grey.
Vanessa's dress was by far my favorite, though I can see that it wasn't BR style. Loved the assymmetric hemline, longer in back, and also the plunging neckline and ivory color. Austin's rose dress was too twee: beautifully made, for sure, but it looks to me like his intended "holiday" was a sweet-sixteen party.
Wendy's dress clearly was not the best, so I can't agree with this win. Starr's elimination was a long time in coming, and I'm glad not to have to look at her little bambi-face anymore.

This episode 3 for Banana Republic had a lot of nice designs. Here's the order I liked their clothes.
1) Kevin - His is my most favorite. I loved his black dress and the hat. Its very stylish, wearable and a great cut. The rose on the rope belt really enhanced the look too. He should make it far in the competition if he keeps up this level of quality design.
2) Jay - He knows how to find inspirations - and he sure found it in that building and made it work. I like how he combined the shades of gray and silver. And the shawl and big broach are a nice finishing touch.
3) Austin - his was a classy dress. I really like the bottom skirt showing at the back. He's a creative guy, but it does seem like he's better at overly design vintage type clothes than simple wearable ones. He'll be great at couture and stage outfits.
4) Kara - I liked the color and the frilly stuff she put from the hips to the bottom - its fun and flirty.
5) Vanessa - I really like how the back is longer and flowy - it made up for the plainess of the color.
6) Wendy - Classy and conservative. Kind of 50's good girl vibe to it. I think they selected hers because she actually followed the cape theme Banana republic has in their collection. Smart of her.
7) Nora - I think she has a young, cool sense of style. But I expected better from her. It was just decent. Nice metallic color though.
8) Alexandra - It was ok. Jazzy 20's era style and shapeless.
Didn't like these 2 at all: Robert and Starr deserved the bottom two placement.
9) Robert - Complete mismatch. It wasn't very nice - and color combinations didn't work, and really don't belong together. And apparently he sewed sequins on the leopard prints too -- he should know when enough is enough! Also, I wish people would use those busy animal prints only for bags, scarves, hats or furnitures - and use them in moderation too. I'm not a fan of animal prints - especially the leopard ones he used.
10) Starr - she is constantly over the top with her bright color combinations and costumey designs. I haven't cared for anything she did. She actually did a cancerous green dress with tumors last week. And this week's red and black jokers dress was bright and very wacky at the bottom. Didn't work at all. She deserved to leave for sure. Maybe she should look into designing Halloween costumes - or focus on her Law career.
Glad they did the 3 episode marathon. I got to catch up.

To answer the judges question in episode #3; Yes I would wear Austins frou-frou dress! ITs the holidays and holidays are all about frou-frou and Im not a frou-frou type of girl.
Im glad Starr is finally gone. She was just tragic, week after week. Now if only Wendy will go home I will be a happy woman. Well that and seeing Robert shirtless more!

I can't believe so many people seem to like Daniel. He was so confident he could not see beyond his nose. Worse--he kept spouting Joseph Campbell: "Follow Your Bliss." Yeah, I think the American forefathers covered that with "Pursuit of Happiness." Hardly a revelation when Campbell re-engineered it. It's like colorizing a black and white movie. So wrong. I was THRILLED to see Daniel go. He was a pretentious pseudo-spiritual who talked a game he wasn't playing. I hope he follows his bliss right to Applebee's management. But other than that, I hope he pursues his happiness--out of the public eye.

As far as I know, no. But the you can catch them on TV wednesday's at 9/8 central starting next wednesday (it was on at 10/9 central, is moving down an hour).
After each episode, you can come back here to read synopses, check out everyone's designs, rate the designs, read Tim's Takes, and discuss the show on the boards here.

Yeeeaaaaah, 'k. And all this Campbell vs forefathers has exactly what to do with Daniel's clothing design? His design was not the worst design. Since that is the basis of the show, not how cuddly the designers are, he should not have been eliminated in that round.
Also, in college, I was forced to sit through 6 hrs of an interview with Joseph Campbell. Painfully boring, but at times, a total revelation. "Follow your bliss" and "Pursuit of happiness" are refering to different concepts in *very* different contexts. Joseph Campbell was a genius. He revolutionized the study of mythology. And that was the beginning of his impact on modern philosophy and learning. What the heck are you on about?
Okay, okay, back to clothes. Still want Austin's party dress. Vintage is in vogue, and it's a trend I can get behind. I don't think it's a matter of clothes in years past being so much better than clothes now. I like being able to pull from "the best" (or, more honestly, my favorites) of the past.
