How's the weather treating you where u live??

So far this year, "sunny" California has had more rain than Seattle, but I'm managing to keep my nose above the water line although my little legs are getting tired from treading....thanks for asking.

We've been getting way above average rain in S NM - stupid weather!! I love the rain, but we haven't been able to harvest our pecans because we can't get into the field. Of course, it's great for me as a transplanted Oregonian (who doesn't get home NEARLY often enough) because it's restoring my webbed feet to near duck like condition. . .smile.gif

Oh, sorry, my mistake...do you have just one dog or two?
What breed is she/he? Can I ask his/her name???

I like labradors, but, they grow big and shed. Do BEAGLES/italian grey hounds? My neighbor has a miniature italian grey hound("Speedy"-he sheds, but is so loveable.)

I have a Pit Bull (Keeblur), a Siberian Husky (Jake, and a Chihuahua mix (Agatha). Most short hair breeds shed throughout the year while most long coat breeds shed once or twice a year. And there are some breeds that don't shed at all, e.g., Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers (lucky for Jai).

I have a friend, and her sister got a kitty from an animal shelter, the one cat has front and back claws and does not scratch the furniture or anything. He is a good cat. I am amazed to see a cat w/ claws that does not ruin furniture.
My cat woulda' scratched the furniture up.

DD

Up until Mei Lei I'd never had my cat declawed. I did find that if you provide them with a scratching post that they like they will use it instead of the furniture, rugs, clothes etc. However, when they turn the whole house into a race track - up and over the blindes and furniture - and climb clothes to get into the shoe boxes on the top shelf of the closet. . . well, a scratching post doesn't help there. But I've loved my fur-balls, every one of them, and have forgiven all sorts of destruction because their so darn cute!!! and snuggly!!!
I think I'll check into the claw covers for Mei Lei's back claws when we finally get new furniture.

Keeblur and Jake were purchased from breeders and Agatha came from the shelter......but she doesn't like to talk about it. (When I adopted her 5 years ago, it was obvious she had just had puppies. We'll never know what happened to them but she was picked up as a stray. Ever since then, Agatha has displayed an enthusiastic mothering instinct and constantly cleans the Pit Bull....it's a big job but Agatha is dedicated. I think it's an unfulfilled mothering instinct and Keeblur is very patient and understanding...thank Ghod!)

Thanks Tomasulo! I try very hard to stay objective, and mainly positive in the boards.
I also have dogs in my yard - dogs (big dogs!) live outside, kitty lives inside and nobody gets eaten by anybody else. We tend to 'collect' rottweillers. Altho right now, after losing our pure breds over the years to old age, we have a rott/chow (MONGO) and a german shepherd somthing (NALLA). Mongo was a 'foster child' whom we had with 2 of our full blood rotties and after Shira died from old age Mongo was lonly - so, of course, we got him a puppy!! The 'puppy' is now about 5, but she's still the 'puppy'!

Right now I am in the second round of the flu(?) crud(?) and I feel like a thousand ton elepant is sitting on my chest. All I've been doing is drinking Celestial Season's Vanilla, Honey Chamomile tea since last night. It is soothing, sweet and warm and the chamomile is very relaxing.
I really like Celestial Season products--well I should, they are produced just down the street from where I live!

As for the nail coverings, I've never actually tried them, but if I'm not mistaken you can get them through the Foster's catalogue for maybe $17 or so. You might try calling a few vets and see what they would charge, because I'm thinking it may be kind of difficult to put those on a cat yourself, unless you have a VERY mellow cat.

There's a lot of wisdom in this post from raindog. I hesitate to jump in because she has really covered it all and also because of the storm that developed last time I discussed the subject.....but apparently I've got more beauty than sense .....(yeah, right, Tomasulo, you keep telling yourself that!)

Raindog is correct about the price for the nail caps. They are available from Doctors Foster & Smith (catalogue or online) and also Petco (same price...I think they're called Soft Claws). I'm sure it's a challenge to put them on a cat but far better than the alternative of declawing. Thom brought up this subject in the Michael C. episode and was courageous enough to add the information about the cruelty of declawing. It is widely, and erroneously, believed that declawing is the removal of the claws when in fact, it is actually the amputation of the tip of the toe. This can result in pain and deformity not immediately noticeable. Many ethical veterinarians will inform the cat owners that this procedure is inhumane and suggest alternatives. I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty and I'm not implying that those of you who own cats and have already had this done are not loving, well-intentioned cat owners. I just want to inform anyone who is considering having this done to their cat but has not been informed of everything it involves. The discussion got so heated last time that it resulted in a member leaving the board because she felt so maligned and insulted. I regret that it came to that, but I feel that I have to stand with Thom on this subject and I would feel guilty if I didn't try to help.

I'm glad you brought it up - I was avoiding another firestorm! I've never had that much trouble with my cats clawing stuff, mostly because I've never owned anything they could really tear up. Well, other than when one took a weird spell of clawing up several leather things. Shoes, a messenger bag, my daytimer... now I just don't leave them where she can get to them. But I think the nail tips would be a GREAT alternative to declawing. I've always thought it was an awful thing to do to a cat, and I was so glad Thom mentioned it and the nail tips.

raindog: I was so relieved to see your post. I was nervous after I posted because, unlike Thom, I tend to alienate people when I try to discuss a subject that I feel strongly about....like animal cruelty. I become overly militant and clumsy. Instead of informing and gently suggesting, I come on like a bulldozer. I really appreciate your support because I SO didn't want to drive anyone away like I did in the great war of 2004.

I know exactly what you mean. Although I tend to be not outspoken over things I feel strongly about. I'm always too worried about treading on someone's toes, when sometimes they just need to be stomped. I wish I was more like you!

We got my older cat from a pet store, totally without planning to - we were walking around the mall before going to a movie, and there in the window was this TEENY little grey kitten, just shooting those take me home with you arrows right at us. So we got a kitten instead of going to a movie. She's mostly grey with a little white, named Colfax.

We got my other cat from a neighbor, who had taken in a pregnant cat - Stella was one of her kittens. She's a calico, and the sweetest cat on the face of the earth. Not that I'm partial, or anything. She waits at the door for me to come home, and follows me around the house.

I think those nail covers are vinyl, maybe - they are some sort of plastic, and they are glued onto the nails. They actually come in all sorts of colors, which looks fun.

Oh, it's NEVER too early for a Guinness. I have an Ireland calendar this year, and on one of the February blocks there's a sign that says "Guinness is good for you!" Word.

I've lately become very taken with Sierra Nevada Porter as well, which is a microbrew. Dark and Guinness-like.

Well, no, it's never too early for a Guiness - but I'm not allowed to just substitute it for my coffee at work - darn it!
My most recent 'new try' at a brew has been Mocha Porter from Rogue Brewery in Newport, OR. They originally started in Ashland (Rogue River area in S OR) and moved to the coast and got bigger facilities. The porter is quite nice, altho not quite as heavy or smooth as Guiness, and the head on it is more harsh, not as creamy smooth. . . and yes, I know where most minds on this board will go with that description (you naughty things!!)

That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a long time...and I really needed to hear that today. Believe it or not, for the past few days there has been a tiger (yup, a tiger!) loose in this area (someone thought it would be fun to have a tiger as a pet.....is there no end to the stupidity of some people?!?!?) and it escaped. People were seeing its tracks but it was able to elude capture for several days. Finally this morning, I could see helicopters hovering over the hills and people were arriving late to work because the freeway was closed. The tiger was shot by the Dept. of Fish & Game....not with a tranquilizer gun. Nope, in their wisdom they just decided to kill it. I've been in tears off and on all morning and my hands are still shaking.

I can see that happening if it was the police that caught the animal, but for the Dept of Fish & Game to do that, I'm thinking that the tiger may have been injured or it was sick. Otherwise, I'd like to think that they'd tranqualize it.

Sadly, that happens a lot around here. Exotic pets (everything from big cats to poisonous snakes to alligators) get loose, or someone decides that gee golly they're too big to handle, so they release it in the wild. Pathetic!

I find it difficult to believe they could make an accurate assessment of the tiger's condition from a helicopter. I'd like to think it was done for humanitarian reasons, but I'm "jaded and bitter" (like Ted) and I don't have any problem picturing an overzealous Fish & Game employee/would be hunter deciding this would be the only opportunity he'd ever have to bag a tiger. Sorry...I'm too upset to give them the benefit of a doubt right now. I need to mourn for this innocent animal.

I just read an online news blurb about this. The 'reason' for killing the animal instead of using a tranquilizer was that a tranq takes time to work and the people involved might get hurt. Dumb 'reason' from my point of view. . . geez, just use a stronger tranq, have a vet who specialized in big cats standing by to do an immediate evaluation to be sure you don't over sedate - and then you don't have to kill the poor cat. That tiger didn't ask to be anywhere outside of his natural habitat. . . Poor kitty-kitty. . .

That is just awful - why couldn't they tranquilize it?? And whoever had it as a pet needs to be shot themselves.

In the last couple of weeks there were two very young tigers found wandering down the road south of here. Weirdly enough, the road they were on split two counties, so one county took one cub and one took the other. Then they cried for each other until they were reunited. Apparently they were very tame - they just hopped into the trucks. They were taken to a farm that specializes in rescuing exotic animals, so they at least had a happy ending. That's so sad about yours, though.

Sorry...I'm too upset to give them the benefit of a doubt right now. I need to mourn for this innocent animal.

I'm sorry that this happened. I mourn with you.

Thank you, KCee. If it seemed like I was jumping on you, please forgive me. (You can imagine the hell I'm putting my co-workers through every time they try to approach me....bitter snarks with intermittent crying jags...I'm pleasant!) I'm comforting myself with the knowledge that at least this tiger knew a few days of freedom in this world and now can run free forever on the other side.

I didn't take it that way at all. I totally understand.

I like coffee with lots of cream and sugar. I really don't have a favorite brand.
At night sometimes I like to drink hot chocolate. Swiss Miss or Carnation instant.

Hey Raindog - where is Sierra Nevada made? We have a couple little breweries outside of Ruidoso - and the name looks really familiar. So nice to find someone else who apparently drinks beer for the flavor, and not just for the alcohol content (altho that nice warm Guiness buzz is good - don't misunderstand me!!LOL) I'm always on the look out for new ones to try.

Has anyone here ever had to testify in court?

I did.

Was it scary?

A little disconcerting, maybe but, not scary.

Pathetic!

I don't know... Fish & Game isn't the most animal-friendly of organizations. Alaska has a huge problem with wolf-moose predator control, and most times the F&G board are behind it. I personally think it'd be easier to ban moose hunting until the population evens out (as nature has showed us time and time again!) than to keep this huge debate going on about whether it's ethical. Then you get into the whole mess of people shooting wolves from planes thinking they're doing the community good. Idiots.

Did anyone watch John Stewart show last night. He had some guy on the show that was making comments about homsexuals, gays, & lesbians....commenting on that Charlie Brown character, Peppermint Patty, the new Simpson eppy....etc???

Sierra Nevada is made in Chico, California - is that near Ruidoso? Until I looked at the bottle, I was under the very idiotic impression that it was made somewhere around here - don't know how I came up with that since we're completely across the country from the Sierra Nevada mountains. We DO have some good little breweries around here, though.

Does Rogue make Dead Guy Ale? I really like that too. (Did you mention Rogue? Am I even spelling Rogue right? I think I was spelling it like the stuff you put on your cheeks. Need..more...coffee...)

So happy to have the board back at full speed!....I was jonesin' for my pals....and I DON'T mean the Gal Pals....(crickets chirping)..........

Just wanted to thank all the peeps who empathized over the loss of the tiger. There is going to be a vigil tonight at 6 PM on the site where the tiger was killed. My daughter works right near it and she said the spot is covered with flowers that people have been leaving there. It breaks my heart but it also gives me hope.

What tiger?
Did a poacher shoot it?
What happened? Tigers are beautiful cats.

This is the first time I've heard of the tiger shooting...what people won't do,you'd think they would think before they act...I thought the purpose of animal control was to help and protect and not kill an animal except as a last possible means....The people who owned the tiger, now they should be shot!! Unless you're a professional trying to save the animal you have no right to own one.....

Does it depend on the straight or gay men to choose if they want to have a 5-o'clock shadow or do some prefer no facial hair at all?
I wonder how Carson would look like with facial hair? a beard or a moustache?

I LOVE Annie Lennox! She's got that deep, powerful alto voice that I love so much (being that I sang alto in high school, I'm such a dork) Actually, right now the song No More I Love You's is making me kind of emotional, since I broke up with my boyfriend last night. I'll get better though.
