Those of you who listened to the John McMullen show on Friday will have noticed Ted did not appear as scheduled. I e-mailed John and he told me that for various reasons Ted's weekly food&wine spot had been moved from a Friday to a Monday. His first appearance is tonight, Monday, at 10pm EST on Sirius radio OutQ 149.

Why is your one fave FFer the most sexy, adorable, cute?
What is it about their positive attritibutes? Their physical bod? Personality qualities that you like? Their eyes/smile??
In my opinion THOMY would be the most gentlemanly of the FF. His design expertise is precise and he wants to know the client's wants & needs.
I personally like black/very dark hair-spiky if it is avaliable. There is SOMETHING special about CHARMING THOMY.
Some guys have that indention on their chin, like Jai. But I don't know a lot of guys that can lift their right eyebrow and have a left side smile-like THOMY.
He photographs very sexy. Looking into the camera-flash.
I like tall guys, broad shouldered....
THOMY has a unique personality, he can be sassy, naughty, and loveable all in one bod.
He's a charmer keeper

Have any of you seen that new L'Oreal commercial that Kyan is in? I saw it twice on Tuesday. I had the TV on but I was reading and I heard Kyan's voice and I looked up and there he was. He looked very handsome as usual. The ad is for a product called L'Oreal Hi-Light Styliste which is an at-home highlighting kit. It's for women and Kyan talks about how easy it is to use. I was so happy to see him! The first time I saw the commercial was on MTV and the second time was on CNN, I think.

I just got around to listening to Monday's show. It was pretty good. A lot of it was technical talk about wine, which I didn't follow very well, but Ted was funny. He made a pretty dirty joke (about oral sex). And he talked about Barry a bit, too.
John introduces Ted and starts by mentioning they were recently in Florida making over the Red Sox. Ted told a funny story about wearing the Red Sox cap they gave him on the plane home, and the (New York-based) air hostesses saying, "we're going to be putting you in a center seat that doesn't recline, sir, and about that hat..."
Then they get to the food&wine. John says Ted brought a bottle of wine to the studio, which Ted says is a Preston Shiraz [sound of cork popping out a bottle], then jokes about the 'fine stemware' (plastic glasses). As Ted drinks, John asks how difficult is it to become a wine connoisseur, and Ted goes into a mini rant about the wine industry 'screwing itself' by making wine so complicated and elitist and scaring people, and none of the things wine connoisseurs talk about are really that important; if it tastes good with steak you should drink it. John snarkily remarks that Ted did the swirl the glass and sniff the wine thing that wine connoisseurs do before drinking, and Ted laughs and says it's a reflex. After more technical stuff, he starts talking about the movie 'Sideways' (his favorite characters: the guy cheating on his fiancee and the motorbike-riding girl) and how the wine snob character was really annoying.
John then asks how Ted got into be interested in food&wine, and Ted tells the story about working at Chicago magazine and his editor there allowing him to do restaurant reviews, and that he would be sent to review the bad restaurants and the more qualified reviewer would get to do the good ones (he jokes about Barry complaining about that) and that sparked his interest both in food&wine and in writing about food&wine. Then there was a long discussion about pairing wine with food, and most of Ted's advice was the same advice he gave in the QE book.
They go the call-in portion of the show: the first guest asks about having a problem with tannins in wine, and Ted recommends he try lighter wines like a Pinot Noir or a Merlot, then they talk about screw top wines a bit. The second guest asks about sulphites in wine, and Ted explains they occur narturally in soil and aren't something that is added to wine. Then he asks what kind of olive oil should he use for cooking, and Ted says cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, then the guest says he's a trucker and cooks in his truck on a little stove. Ted seems quite taken with the idea and tells him to write a cookbook, then suggests canola or peanut oil, because they don't smoke as easily. The he starts talking about him and Barry discussing how hard it is to get good food on the road. End of first halfhour and cut to commercial.

I just signed up for Bravo e-mail yesterday. After I signed up I got an e-mail from (oh, it was a wierd name) that said they had gotten my info and I needed to REPLY to their e-mail or I would be dropped. Further down in the e-mail there was also a URL to specifically drop the service. But the way I read the e-mail you couldn't just assume since they had replied to you that you were on the list. You had to reply back. You may want to try it. I've heard nothing else since yesterday afternoon so I'm only assuming it worked when I replied.
Cheers, and Yee-Haw!

Glad you like it. Last half hour:
Ted opens the last half hour of the show with a dirty joke, which am I not remotely capable of actually describing, so:
John: Ted Allen's here, and he's going to be here with us every Monday night, and we're going to talk about that stuff we like to put in our mouth. [Pause] No no no, not that, that's Derek & Romaine (another show on OutQ that deals with sex stuff), no we're talking about stuff that actually has some real nutritional value.
Ted: Well, I mean, I'm told that has some nutritional value. Can I get on their show too? [Laughs very dirtily]
John starts talking about airline food and Ted mentions the food they (the Fab Five) were served on the plane home from Florida, and how airlines attempt fancy restaurant-style food when you really just want something simple like a turkey or ham sandwich (instead of the food he was served: a melted cheese and turkey sandwich and beef stew, which sounds about as fancy as mac'n'cheese, personally, but I guess these things are relative). Oh, and he mentioned only those in first class got fed at all. John says he always hits the Baileys on planes and Ted says he doesn't know [John] well enough yet to laugh at him for that.
John starts a new topic about entertaining etiquette, which reminds Ted about interviewing and cooking for Martha Stewart years ago and her being extremely nice, but then giving him an autograph saying, "try again on the perogies, Ted." Then another Barry story (for those of you playing at home, the tally now stands at #3): "Barry can never remember whether the fork goes on the right or the left, which I find adorable." John kind of goes quiet and mentions that Barry is actually in the studio, which causes Ted to start reciting Barry's innumerable and impressive intellectual qualifications. Now that is adorable.
More phone-in guests: Chuck wants advice on cookware. Ted says you should focus on having good knives and a good skillet. (His skillet was a gift from his mom years ago, and he says it's good for "if Barry ever misbehaves..." ...that's #4!) They start discussing plastic vs. metal handles, which leads Ted to say he always forgets and burns himself when he uses metal handled-cookware, telling a funny [well, not for him] story about badly burning his hand cooking for a dinner party at his home and holding a jug of ice water on his lap all through dinner so no one would find out he'd hurt himself, a ruse that worked --- for about ten minutes.
Between phone guests, John asks if the rest of the FF try to invite themselves over for dinner all the time, and Ted basically says they don't really hang out together outside of work much anymore. John says he has a "friend" (cough) who wants to date Thom. Ted asks if his friend is certifiably insane, then cracks a joke about Thom's larger size (meaning weight, but of course that's not how it came across). Ted role-calls the things they make fun of each for: "Thom's the fat one, I'm the old one, Kyan's the not-very-bright one, Jai's the useless one, and Carson's... Carson." He goes on to say they're all really great - sometimes he does want to kill them ("I haven't seen them for four days, right now I don't want to kill them at all!) - but they're all great friends. For some reason Ted decides this is a good moment to share a not-at-all indiscreet titbit about Carson's sex life: "By the end of a makeover, because Carson's still single, he's usually quite randy and he starts sort of grabbing on to anybody who's marginally attractive, or standing upright. Sometimes it's the victim, sometimes a crew member... It's not pretty."
More calls. Charlie wants to know how to clean All-Clad cookwear. Ted recommends using Barkeeper's Friend to clean it and says that's what he uses, before pausing briefly and adding that Barry (#5!) does all the cleaning (Ted: "He just kicked me! He just literally kicked me to get me to say that"). Some boring chat about stoves (Ted: "gas top with an electric oven"). The last guest, Johnny, asks about fried chicken (Ted: "I love fried chicken!), Ted offers his fried chicken recipe, which involves marinading the chicken in buttermilk. Johnny ("actually, it's Donny") invites Ted over for dinner, pisses all over the previous cast iron pan recommendations (You Need To Buy Your Pans From WISCONSIN. The others AREN'T GOOD!) before professing love for Ted. I kinda like Donny. John wraps up the hour by recapping what's been talked about that show and what they could discuss next week.
Ted: "Hunting? Fresh game? I don't know if I can bring my boyfriend (that's #6 total, woohoo!) for that show!"

Naomi, You da man! (Okay, I won't embarrass myself anymore by doing my pathetic imitation of jive-talkin'....I promise). You did such an amazing job with this re-cap...I felt like I was there. Ted is hilarious and I love it that he kept making little jokes about Barry. How cute is that? Ted's remark about having a "friend" who wants to date Thom made me wonder what's happening with Thom and Greg. Naomi, you usually have the scoop on this stuff...do you know what's going on with that relationship? (I'm not wishing anything bad for Thom and Greg...just asking. Ghod knows we don't want to open that can of caterpillars again. I know it's supposed to be "can of worms", but I gayed it up a little.) Ted should tell Barry the trick to remembering knife and fork placement is that "fork" has 4 letters (like left) and "knife" and "spoon" have 5 letters (like right). Thanks again, Naomi. Ted gives great interview!
