I really liked this episode. It was a nice bounce back from the rather blasé Warren Loy "event".
If I had any complaints at all, it would be that we only saw Carson give him two looks. What was up with that?
I don't know...the whole thing was just so darned cute. John & Sylvia are the picture perfect newlywed couple - forget Nick & Jessica. The bubble bath, the food, the drawing, the impromptu performance: cute, cute, cute, all of it.
Plus to top it all off, John was a dayum fine cutie himself...bubble baths have taken on a whole new life for me

Romance galore! When John greets Sylvia at the door with a kiss, Thom makes a comment about life not being fair....well, baby, there were a whole bunch of us thinking the same thing! And did I hear Thom speak Italian?....oh, good lord, be still my heart! The Fab 5 looked like they were falling in love with this couple...I think we all fell in love a little bit. I applauded John's efforts, I cried with Sylvia, I cheered at the skating, and I sighed when Thom said he was going to find his soulmate. Another incredible episode.

Ok I have to admit this guy John was no 'fixer upper' he was drop dead gorgious! I could see our boys drooling during the entire show! LOL! His new bride is one lucky lady! The skating show in Central park braught tears to my eyes, they were fabulous!

Although John and his wife seemed very nice, my impression was that after he got his gnarly toenails fixed...what else really needed fixing? Kinda made the episode "uneventful" to me. The guys didn't make fun of him much because there wasn't much to make fun of. Hope they aren't going to go "Hollywood" next, like makeover an actor or something. My little "Hip Tip" to the producers would be "maybe you should expand your Hunting Grounds a bit and find some really genuinely pathetic, clueless, bumbling straight guy that really needs help." Besides that...the "Guys" were very cute (as usual). I really liked the part when they were all going GaGa seing John in the bath, and when he went to the door with the towel on and kissed his wife; and Thom says "it isn't fair". I was thinking "Thom...now you know what a million straight women are saying every day when they see you on TV" (Hee Hee). P.S. Did you notice that Ikea was mentioned again in this episode!

i loved this episode! not only was he a major hottie (though he has nothing on Thom!) but his wife was also such a sweetie. he was honestly trying to change for his wife. Since she came to this country and had to adapt to our way of life and he had to learn her culture. Thom was awesome in this episode, but when isn't he? the boys were funny and cute and John looked totally yummy by the end. the skating was adorable!!
- does this count as the episode where they make-over a celebrity??

I really looked forward to this episode - I love figure skating, and I remember both John Z. and his wife from the last Olympics. He and his partner skated so well in their long program (I still remember their smiles when they finished!), and after he performed, he sat in the audience to watch Sylvia skate. They're both such appealing skaters.
How nice to see him try so hard to learn things to make her happy. (Sylvia's tears at dinner were so touching). I loved it that he related to her what the man in the cheese shop had to say about food and culture - he was really listening. I have to say that Ted handed John Z. a task with a very high "degree of difficulty." Things with thin pastry dough and moist fillings are tough to do, even for experienced cooks, which he is not. He pulled it off like a champ, though (but he must have been sweating it!).
FYI, in skating terms, Sylvia's a singles skater, and John is a pairs skater, and they have both overlapping and sometimes very different skills, which would account for them rarely skating together. Without seeing them in person, I'd guess that Sylvia is bigger than the average pairs partner (female pairs skaters tend to be teeny-tiny, hence easier to lift). Sylvia would probably be more accomplished in multiple jumps than John (pairs skaters don't need as many triple jumps). That they were able to skate together so beautifully is a testament to their deep connection with each other.

a couple of quick comments. the show was great as usual. i like the diversity of the men who are madeover (ethnicity and age).
a quick tip on those emporio armani ski sweaters. they look great with a sportcoat that may be slightly too big especially in the shoulders along with a nice pair of jeans.

This episode was a joke. This was the second guy that had a stereotypical gay job. At least next week's show will have a more macho type straight guy. It's bad enough that my gaydar doesn't function, but this guy didn't even make my "straight-dar" go off. I know he said that he and Sylvia were together for some time before their marriage in August, but I can't help but wonder if this was some sort of marriage of convenience so she could get her green card. For a straight guy, he looked rather comfortable in the bed with Jai and while shopping with Carson at Emporio Armani. This guy was way sensitive and romantic. It reminds me of the John Bargeman episode. His looks and apartment weren't bad. The only issue was that he and his wife didn't unpack their wedding presents and his feet were gross. I think we were spoiled by the Ralph S. and Kevin D. episodes, but what this one lacks in terms of jokes and need for make-better, it makes up for in eye candy.
John Z. looks good for 30 y.o. Carson was funny when he swooned at John while trying on couture. Nice package, almost as good as Ky's. And that furniture salesman was a real cutie! John was making alot of eye contact with Kyan at the spa. I wonder if Ky had a tent in his robe. I also wonder why they had to lay down just for a pedicure and leg massage. When I saw Kyan's chest hair peeking out, I was like, take off the robe, dammit! Not the show of package like in the John Verdi episode, but at least he's being a tease. This guy had a 5 o'clock shadow like Kyan. And, just like Ky, this guy had a hairy chest! Yay! I think Kyan put together this whole bubble bath thing for him just for our boys' benefit so they could see him naked while he got ready. And Kyan kissed Carson's cheek. And in Kyan's Hip Tip, when mentioning how getting massages can be costly, he suggested self-massage. I wanna watch Kyan "massage himself"!

Magic was afoot on the John Z. episode. Not only were his feet transformed, but his clothing style and apartment were too thanks to the FAB FIVE!! The romantic Central Park carriage ride and ice skating demonstration topped it all off and redeemed QE after the previous week's "Warren Report." John didn't have much to improve upon physically. He looked like a Ralph Lauren model when Carson gussied him up. And little beads of perspiration formed on my brow during his bubble bath! What a romantic man ... yes, his wife's a VERY lucky lady! <sigh!> Thom outdid himself with the apartment. I loved the wide horizontal stripes painted on the walls and his use of the floor-to-ceiling draperies. Ted may have wanted to make this admitted non-cook's first time in the kitchen a little simpler and selected an Italian meal that didn't require using a pasta machine (poor John got so NERVOUS!), but it all ended very well. Thanks for another GREAT SHOW, guys!

Perfection. That is what this episode was. I completely fell head over heels for John. He is amazingly hot. If he wasn't married I would most likely be running around New York looking for him right about now. With that hat Carson put on him... oh my lord.

Good show - John really wasn't in dire need of the Fab 5 but I really enjoyed seeing the relationship between John and Sylvia and how he was going to try harder to let her know how much she means to him. I got all weepy when she told him he could cook ravioli for their children. Kyan's hip tip was a riot and Thom was as delicious as ever!!!

Yet another episode of QE that succeeded in bringing tears to my eyes. I thought it was cute how the F5 were all sort of flirting with John. When they had to give him ratings and Jai put, "Do you have a gay brother?" I was in hysterics. Though, I always am when I watch this show. From the, "Here's some lipstick for ya, it's just pretty," to, "Oh my God, it's so beautiful," this episode was just all around a great one. I also loved it when the guys were back at the loft watching. When Jai fell to his knees T'was quite funny. I seriously thought that we were gonna see more tears from Jai ("Oh my God.. I can't even deal.") and possibly Carson ("I'm starting to get a lil' emotional myself!"), but no go. John and his girlfriend are so lucky to have each other. I think they've found true love that will last. All around, this episode had me laughing, crying, and laughing again. Chalk up one more great job to the F5.

I think it's great that they did a musical-theatre guy, and now an ice skater -- it shows that you can't stereotype a man by occupation, sort of turning the tables by showing that straight men, like gay men, come in all stripes. John was the kind of straight man that most straight women want, a lot of what the Fab Five are trying to bring out of a lot of other subjects -- sensitive, not afraid to say how he feels, with a sense of style (though a little suppressed) and confidence. And he's hot, too -- not as hot as Thom, but really hot nonetheless.

John Zimmerman has done modeling for Barney's. I don't know if he is still under contract to them. This is from his fan site. The February 2003 post has the catalogue shoot.
http://www.figureskatersonline.com/ina-zim...erman/news.htmlJohn didn't need a makeover but it gave everyone an opportunity to ogle him and submerse themselves in his gorgeousness and his warmth and his sincerity. I can't think of who did the best job of the Fab 5. John seems to have inspired them to pull out all the stops and create a wonder of a show. The dinner, the decor, the wardrobe, the grooming, the date and the tears, were outstanding. The stars of the evening were the skin tight black briefs, which while they were on display several times, could have used a little more exposure. Thank you Fab 5. You're going to have a hard time trying to top this one.

I was eagerly anticipating this episode, and it didn't disappoint. John Zimmerman is a handsome man. Thank you Scout Productions for the sexy body shots.
Maybe John's marriage is one of convenience, as some have posted, and maybe it isn't. I doubt it. Why on earth would Sylvia want to live in Hackensack, New Jersey if she's from one of the greatest cities in history - Rome, Italy? No, she wants to live there because she's in love with John and he's in love with her. Italian women are not stupid. She's from one of the great gay countries on the planet, all that food and fashion and style. And she's been around skating, a gay-friendly sport. She can spot a gay guy in a flash. So they are one happpy straight couple and good for them.
I thought the entire romanticism of the episiode was glorious. There was a real sense of love and it was great to see a couple enjoying each other's company.
I think it's time for the Fab 5 to start making references to their own chances to marry. I realize it gets into political and social issues, but there's no reason why Ted couldn't have mentioned he's been with his partner Barry for ten years or Thom couldn't have said something to the effect that "wouldn't it be great if gay guys could marry, too." I think that's what he was referring to when he said "it's so unfair." And it is unfair.
As for the low-key tone of the episode, also mentioned by some, well, it was sensual and relaxing and there's nothing wrong with that. I enjoyed the charm of the Fab 5 (all of whom knew right away that John Z. is stunning and weren't afraid to reference it). They are gay sexual beings, after all, and gay people have every right to droll as straight people do.
I enjoyed the moments on the ice and the wonderful conversation during dinner And if anybody really thinks John Z. is gay, well, just look at his eyes when he approaches Sylvia in the kitchen for that kiss. Kyle pointed it out brilliantly. And why does a sensitive man have to be gay? The show points out week after week that straight men can enjoy gay men's company and not be threatened or be curious or be gay.
All-in-all, a top-notch episode. One of the absolute best. I taped it and have watched it a few more times and it is a very, very, very classy episode. Bravo to all involved!!!!!

I thought they did that 2 weeks ago with the Comic. The place was a crack trailer and smelled to high heaven. It was sad for Thom to spend all that time cleaning the place up when it will be a wreck again in 6 months.
I will agree that John Z. didn't require much work, since his hair, etc. was already sorted out. The apartment was passable as well. But haven't some of the best episodes been ones where the str8 guy is already halfway there, like John Bargeman (Armenian girlfriend)?
The lesser episodes have been guys who are so far gone that it's obvious that anything the Fab 5 guys do will be for naught. I hate to see the Fab 5 spend 2 1/2 days cleaning up these guys who will never really use what they're being given. The real estate guy was pitiful. It really bothers me that some of the guys just do this show for the 'free stuff'. I had a bad feeling about Adam Z. (as did most, I'm sure), but he surprised all of us!
Love the show to death. Hope the Fab 5 stay true to themselves and don't turn into caricatures. The first episodes were hilarious. Thom being a bit rude and then coming back with wonderful designs. Carson making sexual innuendos the size of a Buick. Does every sentence need to end with 'people'? And I know the guys have more to say than a bit of fortune cookie wisdom.
When are they going to have "Queer Eye for the Tragic Gay Guy"?

You're right, this was a very sweet episode...easy on the eyes, soft on the heart. Very romantic...serious contenders for the John B. and Tina episode, especially with the ice skating at the end. It was funny seeing them watch John take a bath (VERY nice).

Come on girl now! We're not supposed to be stereotyping, remember? I can understand playing around but you seem serious about it. Those two crazy kids are genuinely in love. Come on, you've felt it - you've felt love...you know when it's real and when it's not. It's real between John and his wife - you could feel it radiate out with a heartfelt warmth all through you. Sappy? Maybe, but you know what? I don't get that feeling with all of the straight men. Didn't get it with Alan C. or Tom K. - they may still be with their girlfriends, but I still wasn't feeling it. John B. and John Z. - hot looks, yes...but better yet, true hearts.
I would never think of a male ice skater as being gay, even if he is. Likewise, I would not think of a male dancer as being gay, even if he is. These guys just enjoy the profession that they are in. In fact, most dancers and some ice skaters would be able to kick a so-called "macho-man's" booty because they use every muscle in their body to perform. This gives them an amazing amount of strength AND agility. That's something else to keep in mind for any man who thinks they can pick on another man just because they enjoy skating or dancing (etc...). And it goes for gay men in the professions too; they were born with a male body and if it's strengthened, then they too can kick major booty despite what anyone else might think of them.

Okay, I probably was being a bit tough on John and Sylvia. Many on this board seem to prefer this and the John Bargeman episode to the "fixer-upper" shows, maybe for the romantic element and the hottie straight guy factor, but I prefer the opposite because I find it funnier, more entertaining and there is a more dramatic difference afterward. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Really good stuff. Now if I could just get my hands on that ravioli recipe....
Ingredients for pasta:
1 lb. bread flour (3 ˝ to 4 cups)
5 fresh, large eggs (preferably organic)
semolina flour for dusting
Ingredients for filling:
1 ˝ cups Sheep's Milk Ricotta cheese
˝ cup Cacio de Roma cheese
3 to 4 tablespoons of Pecorino Romano cheese
Cooked Spinach (not too much)
Start with your flour in a small pile. Make a well in the center of the pile. Add the eggs, breaking them up slightly as you bring flour in from the sides. Keep doing this until it becomes dough-like, at which point you can use your hands. Work the dough until it's smooth and elastic.
Wrap in plastic and put it in the refrigerator to rest for 60 minutes.
While the dough is resting, you can make your filling: simply mix the cheeses together.
When you remove the dough, divide it into two sections. Roll each section into a ball.
Re-cover one of the balls. With the palm of your hand, flatten the other one slightly. THen begin to roll it out with a rolling pin. Repeat this process, making sure to keep your dough well-dusted with flour until you have a thin layer of pasta. NOTE: A pasta machine may also be used for this part.
Divide your pasta into two separate layers and lay them out on a floured surface.
Place heaping teaspoons of the mixed cheese and spinach filling all along the middle of one layer, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Brush the pasta with water lightly with a pastry brush. Then take the second layer and lay it over the first. Press the layer down against the first layer, gently covering the mounds filling, making sure to fit it snugly around the filling without tearing the pasta. Once you have completed this process along the entire length of the pasta, you can cut it into individual raviolis.
The raviolis will be ready to cook immediately in boiling water for about 3 minutes but remember that these are really delicate. Stir the water when cooking but be careful not to touch the ravioli itself.

I haven't been on these bds for a while, but just had to offer my two lire on this episode...
I had experienced a little bit of a let-down so far this season, with the DJ, comic & musical theatre guy. (Although parts of the comic episode were good. "Siiiip!" ;-) Not to mention the engagement)
But this...ah...this was molto bene. Being a fan of figure skating probably amplified my enjoyment. When they skated at the end and Sylvia said "I feel like a princess"...NO WONDER. How sweet was that. And to skate there in Central Park... When I married, our first night was at the Park Plaza Hotel facing CP. That part of the city is wonderful, with the beauty of nature against the sparkling backdrop of skyscrapers.
But what I found particularly satisfying was that little extra spark that IMHO was lacking a little bit in the previous episodes I mentioned, that magic that makes the interaction amongst these guys & their "victims" so special. There was so much genuine affection present, you could cut it with a knife. When Kyan was holding Thom sideways (was it an attempt at a figure skating move??), and then they started to collapse, the laughter and the genuinely warm smiles on their faces were so incredibly sweet. When Sylvia described John's command of Italian as "niente...zero," I cracked up as she was doing so herself. She is a gem. And yes, I loved the scoring placards the guys held during the couture show. I mean, how nice is THAT when people -- male or female -- can bestow multiple compliments (sometimes in the form of lust) ;-) on someone? Put yourself in John's shoes, or for that matter, Sylvia's. Wouldn't you be feeling 10 feet tall? God yes, I would.
So a 9.9 from me. A 0.1 deduction because I didn't want it to end.
Oh, and one other thing: count me in as a supporter of gay marriage. Always have been. (Although I say, let the Fab 5 decide when they want to take on a political role. Just because they're gay doesn't mean they should feel pressured to take a stand publicly.) I live in MA, where they're deciding on an amendment to the state constitution as I write this. These are some interesting times we live in....

'Twas completely adorable, all of it. It's so cute to see the guys get so involved with the straight men...plus, I'm an incredibly happy girl so long as we keep devising reasons for Kyan to remove articles of clothing! I agree with you. I never got the impression that John was gay at all. In fact, he's the switch I'd like to see in straight guys. John expresses his feelings, beautifully and serenely. Wow. I wouldn't mind standing on that pedestal at all! Kudos to him. He's a beautiful man.

Wow. Now I have to disagree. You have said one of my biggest fears- that the Fab 5 will be made social martyrs because of their sexuality. The show isn't about them; it's about the straight guy. Why do they need to add their personal lives as commentary? It's a makeover show. Not a political arena. (Incidentally, my other great fear for the show is that NBC will take it from Bravo and dumb it down to make it "family- friendly Must See TV".)

Again, I agree. Absolutely one of the best. I laughed. I cried. It was better than Cats.

Well said Estlinclichy..........as the mother of a gay son I was in total agreement with Thom's statement "It's so unfair" By the time he was ten I knew he was gay. And although I still worry about his well being as far as the way this mixed up world is. I hope someday to be witness to a time when gay men can get married and have the same life as the rest of us. I'ts way past time to get rid of the lables and understand we are "all God's creatures". And if by chance he could find someone like Thom...Well you could color this Mom happy!!!
It is a crazy world. I really like these people in the religious right who are pushing for a constitional amendment to say that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. So, if Thom and I were to pull a "Ross and Rachel" or a "Britney and what's-his-name", and stumble drunkenly into the Little White Chapel, would we really be married? After all, he's gay and I'm an atheist. However, we are man and woman. I think we should try it, just for "research purposes". (wink)

The stars of the evening were the skin tight black briefs, which while they were on display several times, could have used a little more exposure. Thank you Fab 5.
So true, so true!! You expressed my thoughts exactly!!

What a great episode. John is certainly a hottie... as our beloved Fab 5 noticed also. Seeing John and Kyan in the spa, getting the pedicure was my fav part. I almost died when he and Kyan we just lying there, looking in each other's eyes and talking. Hearing Kyan's "pillow talk" voice was a killer! How pathetic am I? LOL! A straight chic who is lusting after Kyan! I can't help myself. And Kyan's hip tip was awesome too. The self massage idea...Kyan wouldn't have to service himself ever if we were friends! LOL!
