Umm Thomwives, remember that oxygen tank which we lent you a while back? Well, after seeing Kyan doing those back exercises I think that the kyanites may need some reviving! And, then we'll lend it to the CITs to revive them from that hip tip.
Anyway, I think this was one of the better episodes! John turned out to be a great guy & was a lot of fun! Not sure how things are going to turn out with he and Emily, though.
Some thoughts...
Loved how Kyan was acting like a little kid with that stinky show. "HEY, smell this!"Too funny! And, he may have had the best quote of the night with, I'm getting you laid as we speak". John's hair looked great afterwards! Glad he got his feet taken care of. Hope Kyan gave him some antifungal products, he looked like he needed them. I do recall Kyan saying either in Beautified or an interview that he has (had?) scoliosis. Having worked for a chiropractor in the past, I've seen some wild x-rays of people with that, and it can be very painful. Glad he addressed that with John.
TED! What's wrong with White Zinfindel? But, that t-shirt with Steve McQueen makes up for it & gives you cool points. That "toast with stuff on it" looked really good.
I want to write on my walls like a chalk board!!! Think my landlord will mind? Thom showed his genius once again. That place was hideous. But, I think the roomate should have been part of this episode because he's half responsible for the state of that place!
And, Jai's great idea with the cleaning schedule also should have included the roomate! Liked that Jai made up that gift bag for Emily, even though it looked like she didn't appreciate it.
Carson, nice job with the clothes. I usually don't like the tie-as-belt idea, but that one was really cool. He really got into John's personality with those clothing choices.
I've got to say, that the scenes in the loft were the funniest I've seen in a while.

The thing about Kyan's back problem (scoliosis) wasn't from an interview, it was from that leaked 'script' the LA Times made a big hoo-ha about. The SG from that episode had scoliosis too and he and Kyan talked about it.

First of all, didn't John know what do do when he had a guest arriving? He musta' had no clue as to clean up. I hope his mother taught him some cleaning skills.
Secondly, his friend, Emily. I thought she was very discourteous and rude. Not thanking him for the gifts...
she didn't complement his new apt. look did, she??
They've been corresponding for 4 yrs.? It is no wonder he didn't introduce her to his relatives.
Incase any of the Thomy fans missed out on this eppy:
*that puzzled look(in the van)
*..."back in Stanten Island, lock the doors..."
*taking his flip-flops off and walking on icky carpet
*"...now where to begin..."
*"lack of a better word, VIAL..."
*QUESTION: WHAT was the chick on his red tee?
*"industrial purpose"
*being a naughty brat, and nonchalanetly knocking folding chairs down and kept walking
**drinking out of a pitcher of beer
*wash your feet when u get in here/laid here"-was it???
*dd's little sweaty boi
MY TWO FAVE MOMENTS:
*autograph chalk board wall-no autograph would be complete with out those two words, "BIG KISS" OXOXO
*(back at the loft)Jai doing Emily laugh impersonations & THOMY laughing
*..."going on yact....."900"
*How John completemented THOMY'S WORK:"capture personality"
*she's adorable(referring to EMILY)-glad he changed his mind later on
*munching back at the loft
*whenever she says something negative, he rolls it off with a positive"
*PONDERING. right finger on lips
*When C said, something to the effect of..."lay off the hotdogs"... and THOMY laughed again
*sarcastic one THOMY:..."little mary of sunshine..."
*..."everybody likes a good NUT..."
*when the baseball game was cancelled..."THOMY did a JOHNLIKE impersonation-totally funny
*"I have goood news & I have Emily..."

It looked to me like Emily had different expectations in her head and wasn't able to appreciate John D. in reality. She had difficulty even making eye contact with him.....so much for Kyan's hopes to arrange some romance for John, but not a completely wasted effort. I think before too long, some lucky girl will recognize what a plum John is. Not since Taebee have we seen the guys so turned off by the SG's girlfriend! Thom....babe!!!.....that apartment looked fabulous when you were finished. Haven't we used the word "genius" about a million times?!?! And didn't he fill out that t-shirt nicely?!?! I think Emily was probably trying to be funny and look cool in front of the camera, but her idea of funny was to affect a hipster 'Yeah, whatever, not impressed,' vibe. Unfortunately I think she wound up looking more immature and spoiled rather than funny. And poor John was so sweet to her, too.

Hmm...I wasn't paying attention, so I'll have to check the tape again. Isn't it funny how both Thom and Ted were wearing silkscreened T-shirts, though?
Quote:

Ahh. I loved:
Thom teasing Ted about saying 'youse guys.'
Thom freaking out about stepping on the carpet (Um, Thom? Honey babe? Why on God's green earth would you take your shoes off in that house?), and Ted attempting damage control.
Ted channeling Mike Myers. "Party on, John." Party on, Wayne. Party on, Garth.
I loved Ted's bruschetta! It was totally well-suited to a time-impaired lifestyle, it looked great, and I love Sauces 'n Love because they make yummy pesto sauce with real pine nuts in it. And isn't one of the owners a good buddy of Thom's? Heard that somewhere.
Ted getting fed up with Emily. "Don't you piss me off!" Ted could so put the fear of God into someone if he ever really lost his temper. You can tell.
This was the most fun episode in a while: Nice, interesting SG, big transformation, and lots of snark from the FF. Just the way I like it.

I'm gonna go against the grain--this episode had a lot that really disturbed me. It was the first time ever that I felt uncomfortable with the guys comments about Emily. They were very mean spirited--maybe true BUT it was almost like they forgot she will see this episode at sometime, as will John.
Positives--thought the whole interaction with John at the apartment was hilarious if really icky!! Loved Jai's tantrum--I don't want to be here.
All the comments to John's face were the usual funny stuff. John was really a good sport.
I agree, I liked learning more about the guys--Ted's neighborhood grocery store, Kyan's concern and advice for John about his back. The new mattress!!! Do you realize how expensive these are? Wow!
Jai's over the top gifts to make Emily feel comfortable were so sweet. Too bad she was so dismissive. Yes, she reminded me a lot of high maintenance Tai.
Thom's redecorating was astounding, as always. And yes, the room mate needed to be held at least partially accountable.
Carson's couture was perfect for the new John.
So, yes, there was a lot of positive energy and good stuff (I can't wait to see it again to pick up the details) but the overall atmosphere in the loft really left me with a bad taste. Not my usual sensitive, kind to a fault guys!
Cheers,

I really enjoyed this ep. John seemed like a cool guy, I loved that he wasn't afraid of public speaking, he actually enjoyed it. He seemed so open to the change and he had alot of charisma.
Emily was...well, to put it politely, rude, immature, and annoying. Not since Taebee has a straight guy's significant other been so reviled by the Fab 5! She deserved it though, I'm younger than she is and I still know how to act when someone goes out of their way to make me feel at home. I didn't hear one single thank you out of her mouth for the whole reveal. John, you can do so much better!
Loved that we got to see where Ted goes grocery shopping. I've actually wondered about that (yeah, I know, I'm a dork) The bruschetta looked delicious, and easy to make. Ted mourning the loss of the White Zinfendel(sp?) was adorable. So was "Don't you piss me off!" I've never seen him ruffle his feathers like that.
Thom's work was amazing. I want to put chalk on my wall! Don't think the Res. Life people would like that very much, though. Buying the Turkish wresting book for John was hilarious. Too bad Emily didn't realize it was a joke!
Carson's choices were great. But Car, why crawl in a bag full of dirty laundry? EWWWW! Good thing Thom was there to pull you out!
Jai was cute in this ep. I felt bad that he went to all that trouble to buy stuff for Emily only to have it sneered at. "You know, I didn't have to think of you!" Right on, Jai! Also loved his whine and dance at the beginning. "I don't like it here!" I probably would've done the same thing. And his impression of Emily's laugh in Thom's ear was so funny. I loved how Thom practically keeled over from laughing!
We got to see where Kyan used to work! Cool! He did a great job giving John a "straight" haircut. "I'm getting you laid as we speak!" lol. I, too, have had back problems, so his demonstration of the stretches was much appreciated. Loved how he kept walking around with John's shoe, "Smell this!" heh.
Overall, a very fun ep. The Fab 5 had their work cut out for them this time around and they really pulled through. I'd like to see John at the next reunion special. He was a great guy and I'd like to see if he'll stick to the program.

You can understand why, right?
Unless, of course, you make great cookies. And we meet you before he does.
I recall that the straight guy's girlfriend was 20 years old and he had been chatting her up on the internet for four 4 years! That would make her 16 in the beginning and him well over 30 by the looks of him.
So the way I see it, he invites her over for the first time as part of this television "make-better" event. She travels alone across the country to meet her friend of four years and first thing there are cameras in her face!
When asked, he asserts that she is sleeping in his bed with him, and maybe she agreed, but maybe when she is sitting on that bed looking at Jai's gifts, the reality hits her that she has agreed to sleep with this guy and she is nervous about what he expects. So maybe she forgets to ooh over some overpriced candles for the cameras.. Sue her!
Maybe she clues in that she is being used and freezes up a bit. That is much different from Taebee who applied to Bravo for a makeover for her boyfriend and then dissed his efforts!
Maybe this John just wanted a pretty young thing for the cameras. Yeah, and before Kyan ever laid eyes on her, Mr. Spirituality joked to John that he was helping him get laid.. And John had nothing to say to that about his friend that his roommate said he e-mailed every other day! Some "friend" John was!
I have no sympathy for poor little Jai that the young girl didn't give a [censored] about all the expensive junk he crammed into the shopping bag. Maybe material things don't impress her the way they impress Mr. Jai "I got you a computer!"
I'm not saying that this girl is better or worse than any 20 year old girl, but it's funny how everyone is examining her behaviour under a microscope and letting Mr. Slovenly leading-on-a-16-year-old-and-convincing-her-at-20-to-film-their-first-meeting off the hook! She didn't do anything wrong other than not jump for joy at material gifts and look uncomfortable in an uncomfortable situation!
The fact that his relative wants to find him a girl to bake cookies, makes me think he had his bed made and his laundry done for him until he got his own place. Maybe they want a girl who will wash and handfeed him too! I mean I do that, but not of necessity! Immature baby men may appeal to some women but I doubt he could find a man to put up with that!
Good thing he is straight!

You know, the Fab 5 were alot more harsh with Emily than usual, even a little bit rude. What stands ut for me is Ted's "Don't you piss me off!" comment. I've never seen him so critical of anyone on the show. Even Taebee and Lisa didn't get so much criticism. I think some of the malice might have come from the fact that Lisa and, too a lesser extent, Taebee seemed to like some things about the makeover. I remember Taebee saying that Carson did a good job and Lisa did like the apartment (except for the Teddy Bear). Emily, on the other hand, said almost nothing positive the whole night. Imagine working so hard to help a straight guy impress someone only to see your efforts totally and completely dismissed.
Now, yes, there is a possibility that she was nervous and uncomfortable. If you ask me, staying for a week and a half with a total stranger that you met over the internet isn't the smartest idea in the world. Especially if they're four years older than you and you're by yourself in a strange city. The Fab 5 clearly thought this was a bad arrangement as well, and perhaps that may have played a part in their dislike of Emily. There's also the possibilty that they knew she'd be seeing it, and they'd hoped she'd realize some things about her behavior.
I'm not saying that the guys were necessarily right to be so blatantly harsh, though they were honest, but there's alot of factors to take into consideration. What we see on TV is only a fraction of a 3-day process, and we don't even see the reveal in it's entirity. Maybe Emily did other things that were rude and inconsiderate that didn't make the cut. Or maybe she wasn't as bad as we thought.

Actually, Bravo lists him as 24, which would have made him 20 when the chats began.
I just wonder if she really knew what to expect when she got there. I mean, she obviously knew about the show because John talked about his experience and she didn't react to the presence of the cameras, but I wonder if she was overwhelmed by the whole thing. That's what I meant earlier by giving her the benefit of the doubt.
Still, if someone gives you a gift, the polite thing to do is to at least say "thank you."

I think John was about 24 when this was filmed, which would have made him 20 when he met Emily. Still a huge age difference in terms of maturity.
Travelling alone across the country to meet a total stranger is a bad idea, no matter how long you've been corresponding. And in a place like New York City, where I'm guessing she's never been before, it can be downright dangerous. She's lucky John was (as far as we know) who he told her he was, and not some raving lunatic! So was John. Meeting people over the internet and then face-to-face always seemed like playing Russian Roulette to me. I tend to think that it would have been a better idea for those two to have met in person at a public place, rather than John's home.
As for the cameras, I was under the impression that she knew he was getting a makeover and would be on TV. Some of the dialogue between the two seems to suggest it.
If you watch her closely, you can see that she sneers at the gifts and the food, which looked to me like signs of immaturity rather than nervousness. I didn't see any real indication that she realized anything bad would or could have happened. Personally, I felt that for her to agree to this arrangement at all proved that she was either too immature to think of the possible consequences, or too naive to realize that bad things could happen to her if she doesn't use her head.

I'm gonna go against the grain--this episode had a lot that really disturbed me. It was the first time ever that I felt uncomfortable with the guys comments about Emily. They were very mean spirited--maybe true BUT it was almost like they forgot she will see this episode at sometime, as will John.
So, yes, there was a lot of positive energy and good stuff (I can't wait to see it again to pick up the details) but the overall atmosphere in the loft really left me with a bad taste. Not my usual sensitive, kind to a fault guys!
Cheers,

Somewhere burried on this board is the thread for James M. where he, after reading all the negative comments towards Taebee, posted that she was not THAT bad and blamed the editors.
You're right. We only see an edited version of what the Fab5 saw, and I imagine that the Fab5 see an edited version of the actual event.
Maybe I should feel a little guilty, but I still think that the loft scenes were some of the funniest that I've seen in a while.

Couldn't agree more! When John told the fellas about their arrangement, all of the MOM instincts in me went into overdrive! Though thinking about it, perhaps having the meeting in front of a camera wasn't all that bad an idea, after all. Hmmmm.

So the way I see it, he invites her over for the first time as part of this television "make-better" event. She travels alone across the country to meet her friend of four years and first thing there are cameras in her face!
I assume she knew that there would be cameras there beforehand, considering she'd have to sign releases, etc., etc. I also assume John told her beforehand that he was going to be on TV. So while I can see someone being uncomfortable, but I also think she knew what was going on.

Sue her!
Or maybe she just didn't like her gifts. The grimaces didn't come as she was checking out the room, examining the bed, all the things you'd be expected to do if you were in a situation you weren't sure of. They came as she was pawing through the shopping bag and discarding the stuff. Uncomfortable in front of the cameras maybe, but not exactly 'Jeez, what have I gotten myself into?'
Quote:
Maybe she clues in that she is being used and freezes up a bit.
'Used?' How so? She gets to come to New York, appear on television, get free stuff. If the motivation to get her to come to New York was 'make an interesting story for a TV show, and then sleep with her,' then couldn't her motivation also have been 'get a bunch of free swag and then sleep (or not) with him?' Last time I checked, 20 is legally an adult.

Yeah, Kyan joked that he was helping John get laid. It wasn't an order. So how do you know that John didn't take it for what it was, a joke?

Even if she wasn't impressed, what would have been the harm in saying, "Gee, thanks!" She didn't have to mean it. She was a guest in the house, and she was meeting an old friend and getting to be on television. 'Not impressed with material goods' doesn't translate to 'be a rude, insulting jackass.'

She's a legal adult, and perfectly capable of making her own decisions. If John had started leching onto her as she walked in the door, it would have been one thing. I saw a hug and maybe a kiss on the cheek. And then he gave her some presents and left her alone in the bedroom while he made a snack. I'm somehow missing out on all the sexual innuendo John's supposedly been foisting on her.

Yeah, and she also dissed his efforts in front of a room full of his friends and family and didn't bother to even say "You look nice," to someone she'd been talking to for years. I'll say it again: Jackass.

You all are making good points.. For 24, John is not that bad I guess. He looked older to me, maybe it was the receding hairline that he was trying to disguise with the tragic dye-job.
And there is so much we don't know about their 4 year old relationship, and what their expectations of each other were.
On the face of things it was a bad situation for her and so my sympathy crossed over to her more because she was the guest, and it SEEMED that he left her to fend for herself in a room full of his family and friends. But that could be editing.
He just seemed like some fast-talking guy who used this young girl for a prop for his make-better. I can almost see the Scout people saying to him that they needed an EVENT and they constructed this SITUATION. And maybe she was 'in on it' and maybe she wasn't, but in any case she was a very young 20. And I agree that she should have said 'thank you' and maybe she did later, or maybe she cussed him out and went to a 'Holiday Inn'. I sorta hope she did..

It was her idea to be on the show.
John told her he was picked for an episode and she wanted to come to NY for it.
She could have backed out at anytime.
She hung out with the family the day before her part was even filmed. She is acts the exact same off camera as she did on camera.
Not name calling here, BUT there is a slight bit of reality in what was aired on TV.
(Side note: John met her through an ex-girlfriend who paired them up.)
