Yes, *sniff*, and yes!

Being from a close family, I can't even imagine how difficult that evening must have been for everyone. I'm glad to see that he and his dad have made a new start without any signs of bitterness, because there certainly could have been. Just arranging a reunion like that is hard enough, but to do it in front of a camera is something else! And, what a wonderful song!!

I agree with Kyan, his wife, Penny, is a hero! Such a wonderful understanding lady. And, what a cute baby!

Kyan: Good work as usual. Joe looked great! If memory serves from the articles, we have that old friend Todd to thank for Kyan getting into the hair styling biz. I think I remember reading that Todd was one of Kyan's roomates when he lived in Texas.

Carson: Despite that horrendous outfit he himself was wearing, he did a good job in finding clothes for Joe - even though he didn't wear any of them.

Thom: Genius! But dang, let's blow the budget, shall we? Fully grown outdoor landscaping is EXPENSIVE!

Ted: Maybe overestimated Joe & wife's cooking abilities, but all seemed to turn out ok.

Jai: I wonder how much Jai & Joe talked off camera about growing up w/o a father around. I'm thinking that this episode must have been difficult for him. Noticed that Ted was holding his hand in support at times while they were watching in the loft. (Though Thom looked like he was having a hard time during that song too.)

Simply Fabulous
The 'Queer Eye' team gave a not-so-average Joe a new look, a nicer house and a reunion to remember

When the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy crew hit town in September, we tried our best to keep up with their whereabouts. Unfortunately, most of the time, the Fab Five and their entourage were shopping, eating and getting haircuts in Dallas. This was caused partly by the tight schedule of filming three North Texas episodes in three weeks and partly by the fact that, well, Dallas is Dallas. But there were Fort Worth sightings of cast and crew at the museums, the White Elephant and M.L. Leddy's in the Stockyards.

The show, now in its third season, has spawned two spinoffs but has lost some of its water-cooler buzz. It was only inevitable that the gurus of makeover venture from the East Coast and head West. We were doubly excited by the news that one of Fort Worth's own had been chosen out of the nearly 2,500 North Texas applicants.

Given that this is the Home and garden section, we followed interior specialist Thom Filicia and his crew around town and skipped the beauty and culinary expeditions.

We offer here a sneak peek at Tuesday's Fort Worth episode. We'll introduce you to the makeoveree, Joe Hagin, his wife, Penny, and their baby; show you around his house; and share a few behind-the-scenes stories.

'From Cowtown to Wowtown'

That's how Carson Kressley describes the interior/exterior makeover to a visibly nervous Joe Hagin as the Fab Five reveals their latest creation.

Kressley's hyperbole is not too far off.

For this, the second of three Queer Eye episodes filmed in North Texas, a crew of craftsmen, painters, landscapers, designers and, of course, Queer Eye's own Thom Filicia transforms a plain-Jane house into something befitting a neighborhood of tidy porches and neat lawns.

The exterior makeover was a novelty for the show. "It was going to be the first time a straight guy was going to drive up and see his house," said Filicia.

And if Filicia is the visionary, set director Valerie Nolan, production designer John Paino and art director Aleta Shaffer are his eyes, ears and hard-working hands. Through the course of the three-day shoot, these three were overseeing the local crew hired to paint, landscape, rewire and remodel. Given the time constraints, it was orchestrated chaos inside the small bungalow as crew members worked hard to finish -- and not bump into each other.

You'll catch only brief snippets of it during the show, so here's a breakdown of the home makeover.

Exterior

• The dingy white-and-yellow paint scheme ("We kind of thought of our home as a McDonald's," revealed homeowner Joe) gave way to a combination of light and dark gray with Chinese-red trim. Even the spacious concrete porch floor was painted vivid crimson.

• The barren front was updated with thick landscaping timbers painted light gray and used to frame the landscaping in front, creating raised beds and giving more pizazz to the yard. "The straight lines of the timbers play off the grid lines in the porch light," said Filicia.

• Instead of a concrete sidewalk, gray stone was used. "It's ordinary rock, but it creates a beautiful pathway," says Filicia. "Plus it balances the heavy landscaping on the right of the house."

• Easy-to-care-for plants and shrubs such as boxwood, rosemary and privet were used in the front beds. A mature purpleleaf plum and crape myrtle played off the gray tones in the paint scheme and helped screen the view of the porch.

• Bold house numbers were placed over the Mission-style porch light.

• Weatherproof furnishings were added to the porch, which had a swing.

• Small copper lamps helped create a party effect.

Interior

The interior is typical of many of the '20s- and '30s-era homes in the area: A small fireplace is flanked by window-topped bookshelves, leaving little room for maneuvering furniture; dining rooms are large; kitchens are small. French doors often separate the rooms.

Aside from sprucing up Hagin's music room (including providing him with a new Taylor guitar and an amp), only the living room and dining room were redone. The extensive exterior makeover took up much of the budget.

• The living room was painted chartreuse and the dining room a salmony red. The trim was painted dark chocolate brown. The colors, says Filicia, were inspired by two striped chairs from Voyager Trading Co. in Dallas. The ceiling and the brick fireplace were painted the same dove gray as the exterior. Bead board, painted the rich brown, was added to the living-room ceiling.

• In addition to chairs, a neutral-tone sofa was placed under the front windows in the main room. The coffee table with a removable lid offered storage for the baby's toys or extra blankets. All the wooden furniture, including the coffee table, had a vaguely Asian look and also came from Voyager.

• A bulky entertainment unit was removed from in front of the fireplace. A small console table was placed on the wall opposite the sofa, and a Toshiba flat-screen television was wall-mounted above the table. The two striped chairs were positioned in different corners of the room.

• In the dining room, a dark-brown wooden table with four wood-and-woven-reed chairs replaced the old table and dingy cream dining chairs. A massive storage unit in the same dark wood now held china, glasses and serving pieces.

A unique touch was the use of an upside-down lamp as the dining-room chandelier. The letters "QE" are branded into the wooden finial.

• Stock woven blinds from Lowe's replaced the dingy miniblinds, and luxurious silk drapes from Silk Trading Co. added a layer of softness to the windows in the living and dining rooms.

• Sisal rugs from Crate & Barrel were used in both rooms.

• Coupralux, a Dallas printmaking company, provided much of the artwork. The set designers also framed Penny's wedding bouquet in a matte-silver framed shadow box as a surprise for the Hagins.

The overall effect was cozy and comfortable. The uncluttered living room now offered more seating options, and the kid-friendly fabrics still looked luxurious.

Sweat, wait and sweat some more

In September, residents of west Fort Worth received a flyer announcing that production would begin on an unnamed commercial and that slight traffic delays could be expected because of filming.

Slight delays. Ha. There was a daily procession of slow-moving cars and ensuing traffic jams. Word had spread. They were queer, and they were here.

Fort Worth residents are not immune to celebrity; the stars do come out here, and not just at night. And despite Bravo's geographical snub (all the Texas-themed Queer Eye shows are listed as taking place in Dallas), Cowtown residents embraced the fabulous quintet made famous by their good taste and off-color humor.

Young and old, they stood in the more than 95-degree heat waiting to catch a glimpse of Carson or Kyan or Jai.

Initially, all we saw was the landscape and painting crews, the unsung worker bees in this particular makeover project, and a bunch of people with cellphones surgically attached to their ears. Then, a lot of furniture arrived, shrouded by blue plastic on the front lawn. Shopping bags also began to show up, as did more cars and more gawkers.

Everyone was rewarded with either an admonishment from the sound guy to keep it down or a friendly wave by Carson from the front porch.

On the last evening of the three-day shoot, patient fans were rewarded when the Fab Five emerged from their air-conditioned trailer parked on a side street and signed every autograph and posed for every digital snapshot. Ted, as expected, was charming and witty, and Kyan unexpectedly shy and reserved. Carson hugged and kissed his way through the crowd like he was at a South Beach nightclub rather than the front yard of a good-humored neighbor.

And as the last scrap piece of paper was signed and the tired-looking crew re-entered the trailer, a well-coiffed matron yelled out, "Y'all come back again."

Not your average Joe

When the television audience first meets Joe Hagin, he's leading a bunch of senior citizens in a rousing version of the hot-dog song and wearing, of course, a hot-dog hat. Without warning, he's whisked away by five dapper men in a dark SUV with a set of longhorns as a hood ornament.

Cue the familiar theme song, and it's welcome to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the Fort Worth episode.

When Bravo cable channel aimed its Queer Eye on Texas, and specifically on Cowtown, you assumed the creative types would be looking for the Western stereotype. We'd see some rube cowboy get schooled in the finer points of couture and cuisine, all for the sake of a good laugh.

Instead, thankfully, they picked 38-year-old Hagin.

The bearded Hagin, who favored baggy cargo shorts and T-shirts featuring musical icons such Willie Nelson, was living in a drab yellow-and-white bungalow on West Seventh Street near River Crest Country Club. It's a street filled with typical arts-and-crafts-style homes, most of them rehabbed and updated. He and Penny were dealing with everyday life and raising their new baby, River. It was Penny who signed her husband up for the Queer Eye treatment after hearing about it from her mom.

"I thought, 'Oh, yeah, whatever,' " says Hagin, and he put the possibility out of his head. But multiple interviews later and "a really killer video" made with the help of a friend, Hagin was the Bravo scouting team's pick for its Fort Worth makeover.

And in the process, he delivers one of the most heart-wrenching episodes in the history of the three-year show.

Despite his giving nature (he clearly loves his work at Mariner Health), his love of a woman whom he married for her heart when it was nearly overshadowed by her 300-pound body (she has since had gastric bypass surgery) and his desire to be a good daddy, Hagin had a void in his life. He had been estranged from his father for nearly 20 years.

"Originally, the producers were going to give this episode a music theme, since Penny and I had been in a band together, but through a lot of long conversations, they finally asked me about my dad," says Hagin. "They had tracked him down [in the state of Washington] and wanted to set up a reunion. Everyone with the show was very sensitive to the emotional part of this, and, I admit, I was a little nervous about it."

Despite Carson Kressley's wisecracks and Thom Filicia's deft interior style, Hagin's reunion with his father and stepsiblings is the highlight of the show. And though it's funny to see Joe struggle with a vegetable peeler and Penny struggle with a corkscrew ("the camera people couldn't stop laughing"), you'll be hard-pressed not to choke up when Joe breaks down in the midst of trying to get the red snapper into the oven after his father holds River for the first time.

Aside from the reunion, Hagin looks back on the experience with nothing but fond memories. "It was like being the star on a movie set. Everyone was great to me, even when I almost got sick in the car. What you see is really what happens on that show. And the reveal," says Hagin, visibly reliving the experience. "Wow, that's really nerve-wracking."

The Hagins recently moved to a bigger place to be closer to Joe's job. But they took all their new things, from the flat-screen TV to the silk drapes, and have slowly begun "to Queerify" their new place, says Joe. Penny points out that River knocked over and broke one of the ceramic vases, but otherwise, the Hagins have made quite an effort to keep up the Fab Five's hard work.

As far as his dad goes, "This has re-opened my relationship with my dad. We talk, and I e-mail him pictures of River."

It's like the theme song says: All things do keep getting better.

So, what was my post? Chopped Liver?

Thanks for the article though.

KCee, my darling, my sweet..

When I cut and pasted CW's article, there was nothing here.
You are not chopped liver or even pate de foie gras!

I just thought I'd sleep on the episode, before I posted..

I did have a sort of almost off-topic thought about the show though because I was more impressed by the wife losing 200lbs and being a new mother. As decent as Joe was, I would have preferred her to have the make-better.

Now that they have dumped Queer Eye for the Straight Girl.. why not let the Fab 5 tackle (in her dreams!) you know, Make Better.. a woman! IT WOULD BE A BRILLIANT EPISODE!
I think it should be a single woman or a widow, going through a difficult time, or dealing with a challenge in her life..
That is my altruistic thought.
Selfishly, all I can think of is Carson on that horse!

I cried during the show when Joe cried. I usually cry when I see people get emotional. I cried when Joe cried when his father arrived. I had dried my tears when Joe started crying as he was checking the fish in the oven and that made me start crying again, and then seeing Joe's wife cry made it worse for me. But I'm happy that Joe and his father reunited because life is too short. River was one of the cutest babies I've ever seen!
Fab5Girl
Oh, when Joe was trying to peel that jicama with the wrong side of the peeler, I cracked up! I loved his laugh and how he had a smile on his face most of the time. He seemed like a very happy, positive person.
FiliciaFanatic
Yeah, how do you go to peel something and not know that you should be applying the blade part, the sharp part, to the food?

But seriously, yeah, this one was more cathartic than anything else, much crying involved.

Yes! She is amazing! I'll have to watch the episode again to catch the timing of her surgery. Did she have the surgery & lose the weight before the pregnancy, and then lost the pregnancy weight! Incredible! I can't even manage to lose the 10 lbs I've been trying to lose.

Did Bravo officially cancel Straight Girl? I don't know what their rating were, but they seemed to be finding their audience, unlike the Brits who never did catch on here.

I'd like to see that too. But, the only problem with the Fab5 doing a make-better on a woman is that there are a zillion other make-over shows for women out there. Though, the Fab5 have a much nicer style than those on the "What Not to Wear" shows, so it would be better.

She didn't need a makeover - she looked fantastic! She's one of my favorite wives/significant others so far.

But, that's a great idea, female makeovers. And I want to volunteer to be the first one! ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!!!!!!

Since apparently they're not going to show up on my doorstep and make over my husband.
tomasulo
River was adorable and, once again, Thom headed straight for the baby! (Be still my heart. Does this man EVER disappoint? Apparently not in this lifetime!) The landscaping was beautiful (good lord, the man does yardwork, too!) and thanks to notey for the article that gave credit to some of Thom's hard working crew.

Ted was dead on when he called Joe H. a class act....absolutely!

Kyan was dead on when he called Penny the best wife ever....and she's had some stiff competition. (Let's not forget Roe Faries, Amy Coffino, Corinne Toale, Karen Zalta, Maria Steele and the amazingly gorgeous Sylvia Zimmerman!) I shed quite a few tears in this episode (for personal reasons too painful to address at the moment) but I began to lose it as soon as Kyan pointed out that, although Joe looked like he had it all under control, his voice as he prepared to greet his dad gave it away. Our sweet, sensitive Kyan picked up on that immediately and that's all she wrote....I was sobbing from that moment on.

KCee,

The reason that I posted that 'straightgirl QE' was history, was that I noticed a poster, FRISCOPnai, from the straightgirl thread mention that Bravo now listed the show under "Past Shows" like BlowOut. But they could always revive any of that list. (I hope they do revive "Project Runway"..)
Also, I agree with you and Raindog and Kyan that Penny (the SG's wife) was special. Heavy women, nevermind morbidly obese women, often have to lose weight to become pregnant in the first place, and to have a safe delivery. Imagine how much stress an extra 200 lbs would put on that woman's heart!

A woman like that could very much use a makeover! She would need skin treatments to regain the elasticity in her skin that had been so stretched, wouldn't she? Not to mention dealing with the issues that caused her to so abuse her body in the first place! The surgery could very well have saved her life, but a make-over from the Fab Five would boost the morale of such a giving woman!

And I agree that there are many "makeover" shows for women, but I think QE could perhaps choose a woman with a unisex name like Lesley or Blair or call it a typo.. say Joan for John. The whole show could be a joke about how to 'accomodate' a woman. And if the main difference was fashion, that is not a problem. Except for undergarments, all but very small women could find a cute wardrobe from the Men's department. I'll bet plenty of women would love to raid Carson's closet!

Thanks for clarifying. I don't often read the Straight Girl thread because I don't often watch the show.

However, I did read somewhere that "Blow Out" may come back for another season and that "Project Runway" probably will because it was such a hit! When I get home from work & have time to surf, I'll try to find the articles where I read this.

The landscaping, wow!
The guys during the reveal, I love how they unselfconsciously will hold hands, have an arm around each other, etc.
WHAT was with Carson's get up? It had to be a joke of some kind.
Loved River and how the guys (especially Thom) held him and played with him.
We'll talk about tears, reunions and all that later.

Well, my house is slowly shifting sideways and is probably going to start sliding down the hill behind us any day now. Beat that! We considered getting the giant from Big Fish to come raise it back up for us, but I'd WAY rather get Thom and Friends over.

And I still have dead plants from last year in my flowerboxes and hanging baskets. Our house is pretty much a dead ringer for the Addams Family's house, except it isn't as cool.

And I need serious help with my wardrobe. I just realized the shoes that I wore to work are falling to pieces. And my hair is a mess and I can't cook and MY WHOLE LIFE IS JUST A DISASTRRAEEE!!!!!

I felt like part of the reason Joe cried after his dad and half-siblings arrived was because 20 years can go by more quickly than a lot of people realize, but when you see a grown woman who was a baby last time you saw her, you are faced with the hard, undeniable fact of what 20 years LOOKS like. Bless his heart for being so open to the reunion.

I would but I've kind of grown attached to my little friends. Is it wrong to name them and worry that I'll suffer from empty-nest-syndrome if the swarm decides to move on some day?

I was thinking the same thing. I have cousins I hadn't seen in probably 20 years, that I finally saw again when their mom died last summer. Realizing that one of the grown men was someone I thought of as a toddler in diapers was just shocking.

It's just hard to imagine going 20 years without seeing your father, though. Or your child. Cousins are one thing, but how sad to have no contact with your immediate family for that long. Good for Joe for instigating a reunion, and I hope this is a new and happier stage of their relationship.

On a more amusing note, my mom got to see an aunt of hers a few years ago who she hadn't seen in probably thirty years. The aunt looked at her and said, "Why, Dorothy, you're an old woman!"

My mom thought it was funny. I think I'd have burst into tears.
ThomsTeddyBear
This was a really nice episode...it's nice when you got family - it's better when you can get them back. Joe was definitely a loveable guy and his wife ranks number two behind Richard Miller's wife for support. She was a sweetie.

The clothes Carson put him in were slimming and very flattering. The haircut (thank you, Kyan) was very needed. I'm glad Thom got to show off his body...uh, I mean his landscaping skills again - it's been a while.

*fans self*

On the moments with his dad. It seemed to me, maybe just me, that his father was a little bit uncomfortable meeting his son again after 20 years and having to do it in front of the cameras. He seemed to be holding back. But like I said, it could be just me.

River was an adorable little thing! Liked watching Joe play with him on the couch trying to give him the baby massage...which is often better to apply as the baby is drifting off to sleep

This kind of stuff puts thoughts into my head about my own father. He and mom lived in NYC then. I got mom's temper but dad's personality; never met him but I know that much. So it was a nice, and thought provoking, episode
tomasulo
TTB: My bad....when I was listing my favorite SG wives, I forgot Richard Miller's wife! Thanks for the reminder. And regarding what appeared to be a little reserve on the part of Joe's father, it's possible that he was holding back because once you open that floodgate of emotion, it might get away from you. It could be he didn't feel it was the right time or place to take that chance.

As I said in my earlier post, having this reunion is one thing - but doing it in front of the camera is something else. I usually try not to get in people's heads, but to me it looked like he was holding the emotions back and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they came out when the cameras were turned off.

Works for the Feds, eh? Wonder what he does?

For some reason, I don't recall a playpen scene. (Must watch again!) There was a cute scene when Carson was about to have the fashion show and they were wondering where Thom was. Turns out he was hiding in the storage area in the coffee table. Also, there are some really cute scenes with him (Kyan too) and the baby.

First off, I'd like to say that the baby was absolutely adorable. Now that I got that out of the way, I want to say that I thought it was a very emotional episode. My eyes even watered up and it's pretty hard to get me to cry. I thought it was funny when Thom was in the coffee table. I liked how Jai was able to identify about growing up without a father. I thought Carson was right to get upset about how Joe didn't dress up. I thought it was nice of Ted to make the sauce for them. And I was kinda reminded of the Andrew episode, where we saw Kyan getting his nails done, when we saw Kyan getting his hair cut. I thought it was funny when Ted proclaimed he was like MC Hammer. I thought it was nice of Carson to label Joe's clothes by color. I liked how Kyan encouraged Joe's bonding with the baby. I thought Thom, as usual, did an amazing job with the house. I liked it how Jai taught Joe how to gift wrap; that's something everyone needs to know. And speaking of things everyone needs to know, I'm rather shocked that between the two of them, they couldn't open a bottle of wine. I mean, I can open a bottle of wine and I'm not even drinking age!

Not a minute in the show after the Fab Five step into the house, Joe's face is compared to that of the 'Travelocity Gnome' {travelocity.com is a Bravo sponsor} And y'know Joe does resemble the Gnome.. less so after his well-needed shave!
Penny was wearing a bright pink shirt a la Carson, and she is even more small and petit than her compact husband. And she had not lost that "glow" that expectant mothers have. I tried to imagine her at 300lbs and what a prison that must have been for her! It was beyond me to imagine. This was not a nervous thin insecure woman like poor Mrs. Sica seemed to be. This was a healthy thin woman who was secure in the love of her husband. A symphony of snaps for Joe and Penny!

It was funny how The Fab 5 saved the toxic aquarium fish, and then served a fish dish to company. I would have totally goofed with my guests that they were eating "junior" or whatever name they gave that pet fish.
Now Thom is a big goof which is very sexy at times, but only because he has that artist's intensity right underneath.. Him bawling in the playpen was a riot. It reminded me of a party I went to where one of the ladies said that her husband liked to have warm milk and a bottle and talcum and a nappy. I kid you not, but I'm sure Thom has less extreem ways of dealing with stress! His comment about Penny's "over the shoulder boulder holder" reminded me of teasing my sisters about their lingerie drying over the shower ring..

I think it was cool how Carson talked to Joe about the impending reunion on the porch swing, and Kyan, Jai,in fact, all the guys were so supportive of Joe. I think that the guys may have had special empathy because of their experiences coming out to parents. It must be twice as sad when a parent is physically close, but might as well be on another planet.. I know it is dangerous trying to interpret facial expressions but Carson (on the swing with Joe)looked as if he was struggling to comprehend a 20 year separation from a parent. Kyan asked Joe if he was angry. I think Kyan may have worked through anger himself and wanted to help Joe through it. Jai had my sort of perspective.. that this is an opportunity that some of us will never have so he should make the most of it. I think it was Thom who wisely related it to Joe's own future with his son, River. Ted gives the SG's a lot of non-verbal support. I think he is like my guy who can calm me down just by sitting across the room and opening up a book. Ted has a very solid reassuring way about him. Voice of reason, even when talking about a non-related subject.

The furniture store Thom took Joe to.. ?Voyager?, had all great stuff. I call it seven-seas look, like in the old SeaCaptain's houses near my area. And Joe laughing on the couch, did remind me of Carson's fraternity pal "Giggles". I think Thom and Joe could 'set each other off' for hours at a party, until their respective dates came and rescued them from themselves.. And the funniest thing Thom said may have been when Penny was struggling with the corkscrew..

Penny says seriously.."It just needs to be yanked."
Thom quips.."It's amazing they have a baby!"

Kyan got Joe an excellent haircut, but I think it will probably be too expensive for a family man to maintain. I think he should have taken Joe to a barber, but then, Kyan said he needed a trim also. I can't see Kyan in a barbershop. Even I go to a hairdresser and brave it out with the wash'n set crowd. I also have never been shaved with a straight razor and never will. It's way too intimate.
And Joe uncomfortably mumbled something about seeing it done in a movie. I bet it was a gory horror movie!

I think that Carson did pretty good with the clothes, but Joe didn't want to 'dress up' which was understandable for a family gathering. He wanted to be comfortable and to make his guests comfortable.
And I think Carson looked fine, except I would have paired the shirt with plain Levi's. Contrast is good. Or he could have worn a solid color or small logo t-shirt over the designer jeans. But I think it was irresistable to be in Texas and not go "all-Out". And the fringed doeskin jeans and sheer embroidered shirt he wore to the "Reveal", was the stuff of "Naughty Dreams".

I don't think I would like Ted's recipe also because there were too much going on in it. I can't see serving fish with guacamole anyway.. (color and texture more than taste issues).
But it was a festive looking "company" dish that gave Joe confidence, and so it was all good. I love Ted's wry understatements... "I don't think Joe's done a lot of cookin'"
And seasoned improv comics couldn't have come up with a better verbal montage than the Fab Five during Joe's
"chopping ordeal".

Carson says "It's a good thing you didn't have him doing origami!"
..another guy adds... "or surgery.."
...Thom adds (looking at Kyan) ... "or baby massage..."

And Kyan, when showing Joe the model of a baby to practise the aforementioned baby massage, introduced it as " a lifesize replica of Ted Allen".. Kyan was right to show Joe that it was acceptable to physically bond with his son. A lot of guys have trouble with giving other guys more than the most perfunctory hug or pat. And I think Joe probably knows from his work with seniors that to be healthy people need human touch, and it all does not have to come from women.
As far as the Reveal and the emotional reunion.. It was hard for me to relate at first. The only time I could have cried is when Penny cried. I could relate to her hurting for him.. And I think Kyan is empathic and could feel Joe's pain through her also, and that shook his exclamation of praise for her out of him and all the guys echoed sincerely.
Kyan is not overly generous in his assessment of the women is he? He recently made the comment "It's always the mothers.." I wonder if he was thinking of the critical mother of Richard Miller as contrasted to his loving and supportive wife. I wonder if he has counseled lovers through parental troubles?
Kyan is probably the same guy he was Day One of QE, and some of you saw it at once, and I was blind to it for some reason. Maybe he is just more comfortable in front of the camera. Kyan fans had a treat today in that they showed the John Verdi (Kyan in disposable tanning briefs) episode today. He never lacked confidence, but now we see the depth I was unwilling to see in the "salon guy".

Jai annoys me in part because I see my own failings in him. I have always tried to avoid being called 'immature'.. and yet even the show where Jai posed in the purple blanket as
"Tinky Winky" was more clever than anything else. He is small and I don't like being small. And when he says or does anything that I wouldn't say like "bling" it bugs me all out of proportion to how it should. He can't win for losing with me! But I think that some of the best talks with Joe were probably with Jai, and of decency, were left personal and 'behind the scenes'. And so, I am not going to say.. and oh yeah.. Jai gave him a great amp and guitar and forgot the computer this time.. Because that is a cheap shot, and in my gut I know it is untrue.
Besides...

Joe doesn't need a cyberlink. He has the "Genu-wine" American Dream.

Kyan's skin looks great! I wish he'd let me kiss his face. Maybe next time. I loved the shade of red he wore on his t-shirt during the show and on the button up shirt in The Loft. Yay, Kyan got a haircut with the SG!! The lights and the clock in the salon are just like those in my living room. Just when I was enjoying the show... The Whitestrips Plug rears its ugly head. It's harrrible! And again, no end-of-show Hip Tips.

It must be too difficult to stage the Hip Tips on the road.. bummer

I like how Thom has been saying, "Come on, girls!" lately. I liked that part where Thom was pretending to do Ky's job, as well as Carson in specs pretending to be Ted. The SG's new decor was not for everyone, but it worked with the architecture and it was no longer blah.
Quote:

I didn't like the couch much, but it looked comfortable and I assume it was "child-friendly". I would have preferred an ivory damask.. chippendale style. That couch goes well with the vague "asian style" eclectic pieces. And it's easy to get a vacuum under the couch!

What did everyone think of Carson's outfit and Elton Johnlike shades? I found it distracting, and not in a good way. Sorry Cars. He made me laugh when he showed the SG something with monkeys on it and said something about the monkey blowing an "air biscuit"

Quote:

I liked Carson's casual style for Texas! And the scrub top with the monkeys was cute. And you really have to have a sense of humor to enjoy yourself in odd romantic situations.. Some people look so uptight that I wonder how they manage to procreate, nevermind have any FUN!

It was so sweet of little Jai to take the pet fishy away to the aquarium where it can be better cared for. Instead of Thom acting like a baby, I wish it had been Jai. Jai's gifting to SG was a bit much with the flat TV, the amp and the guitar.

Quote:

Like I said in a previous post, I suspect Jai's major contribution was personal and behind the scenes.. No, not that you nutters! I meant deep conversation.

Ted's Veracruz fish recipe looked "duh-lish-us!"

Quote:

It was colorful, but I think SG Rob's fish stew from the earlier episode was simpler and would have tasted better. Unfortunately, there was no room for a sit-down dinner..

I usually don't favor the eps with married SGs, but I liked this one. I really loved this guy's honest, hearty laugh and his wife's gastric stapling was really effective.

Quote:

Yes, these were special people. Chalk up another winner for Queer Eye!

Now bring on the horses!

ooohh, very impressive and fun commentary, notevayas! Which I am now going to slaughter with replies since it's late and I'm real hit-or-miss with my use of quotes and color and such.

I was practically hysterical when Thom said, very seriously, "Can we just kill it??" It reminded me of his referring to the other John's turtles, Mike and Ike, as tuberculosis in a box.

It scares me just to watch someone being shaved like that. Why would you DO that???? I'm sure it results in a very nice shave, but it looks like it could easily result in having your head lopped off!

On the moments with his dad. It seemed to me, maybe just me, that his father was a little bit uncomfortable meeting his son again after 20 years and having to do it in front of the cameras. He seemed to be holding back. But like I said, it could be just me.

I was so out of it (hey, who said "when is she not?") that I did not remember the posts that I read very well. That point goes fully to you.

And yes, I'm wondering what he does with the Feds too!

I missed this eppy! I saw D's photo gallery.
Thomy crying a little baby in the playpen would of been so funny to see! What was he doing back at the loft on his hands & knees?

Thanks Dawn...for the quote from Carol Burnette.....it made me laugh and that's something that's hard for me to do....

First off Joe's wife was wonderful! I admire her for her dramatic weight loss and she was so there for Joe at the reunion. But I also admire Joe as he fell in love with her the way she was before too.

Yes, this was emotional. I don't know if I could of handled this with cameras around. But Joe and his family were wonderful. I only wish Joe's father didn't have to leave on a plane the next day. I hope that this reunion will help them to get together more often.

The baby was cute. Thom seems to really like holding the babies looks like there is a baby in next week's episode too. I think he would make a fine father. And as for Thom wailing like a baby in the playpen with Carson comforting him-LOL!

It was so cool to see Kyan get his hair cut along with the SG. I was looking at those luscious locks on the floor thinking-just gonna be sweeped away. And I enjoyed Kyan demonstrating the baby massage-again I think of all those lucky clients in the past who had Kyan as their massage therapist! And to see Kyan on a horse mid-break was very nice as was Carson's last week. However, I noticed when they have been re-airing the episodes (at least last week's anyway)they haven't repeated them being on the horses.

I don't know about Carson's outfit either-didn't totally hate it though. I do wish the SG would of worn something that Carson picked out.

Ted I think picked out a rather easy dish for Joe to make but I couldn't believe when he didn't know how to use the peeler. I laughed when Ted had on the MC Hammer pants-that was a scary fashion flashback!

And Jai-what his emotions must of been with this episode having been without a father also. The talks with Joe were wonderful and the comfort from Ted nearby when they were watching back at the loft makes me again see why I am a fan of the show.

So it look's like next week's episode we see the guys on horses-I cannot wait! However, another SG shunning Carson's wardrobe picks-shame!

I forgot to comment on this too - Penny looked GREAT!! I couldn't believe it when she said she had lost so much weight. Hairstyle was perfect, not too much makeup, nice clothes...I swear, it looked as if the boys had already done her over but she re-did herself. I've lost 15 so far working out but if I come out looking half as good as she does on the end, I'll be dayum happy!

And yes, high snaps to Joe for accepting her as the beautiful lady she was back then before she transformed into the beautiful lady she is today.

Thommie loves me - That I know.
Because my Bravo tells me so.

"Spunky" is a sticky nickname for a woman. But "Spanky" is worse I guess.. My favorite is Sunny.. like poor Sunny von Bulow..
Artist: Dusty Springfield
Album: Look Of Love
Title: Sunny
(bobby hebb)

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
Oh, the dark days are done
The bright days are here
My sunny one shines so sincere
Sunny one so true
I love you

Sunny, thank you for that sunshine bouquet
Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way
You gave to me your all and all
Now i feel ten feet tall
Sunny one so true
I love you

Sunny, thank you for the truth you let me see
Sunny, thank you for the facts from a to z
My life was torn like windblown sand
And then a rock was formed when we held hands
Sunny one so true
I love you

Sunny, thank for that smile upon your face
Sunny, thank you for that gleam that flows with grace
You're my spark of nature's fire
You're my sweet complete desire
Sunny one so true
I love you

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
The dark days are done
The bright days are here
My sunny one shines so sincere
Sunny one so true
Sunny one so true
Sunny one so true
I love you

And there is that classic song "Spooky"..
Artist: Dusty Springfield
Title: Spooky
(middlebrooke / shapiro)

In the cool of the evening
When everything is getting kind of groovy
You call me up and ask me
Would i like to go with you and see a movie?
First i say no, i've got some plans for tonight
And then i stop and say all right
Love is kind of crazy with a spooky little boy like you

You always keep me guessing
I never seem to know what you are thinking
And if a girl looks at you
It's for sure your little eye will be a-winking
I get confused, i never know where i stand
And then you smile and hold my hand
Love is kind of crazy with a spooky little boy like you
Spooky

If you decide some day to stop this little game that you are a-playing
I'm gonna tell you all the things my heart's been a-dying to be saying
Just like a ghost you've been a-haunting my dreams
But now i know you're not what you seem
Love is kind of crazy with a spooky little boy like you
Spooky

Ahh, ahh, spooky, mmm, spooky, ahh, ahh, ahh, spooky, ooh, spooky
Ahh, aah, aah, spooky
whiskers
love IS kinda crazy, and the girlvoices -- they fit soooo well ...

Baby, It's You

(Smith version ONLY ... damn Dusty-esque)

It's not the way you smile that touched my heart.
It's not the way you kissed that tears me apart.

Many, many, many nights go by.
I sit alone at home and cry over you.
What can I do?
Don't want nobody, nobody
Cause, baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Is it true what they say about you?
They say you'll never, ever, never be true.
It doesn't matter what they say.
I know I'm gonna love you any old way.
What can I do?
What 'bout you?
Don't want nobody, nobody.
Baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Baby.

It doesn't matter what they say.
I know I'm gonna love any old way.
What can I do?
What 'bout you?
Don't want nobody, nobody.
Baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Don't leave me alone.
Come on home.
Baby, it's you.

Note--

You're a bad boy, and at your age, where did you hear those songs? Perhaps someone has lots of vinyl in the house?

My comment on the epi: this was one of Thom's best efforts. I loved the paint colors used in the living room and the dining area, esp. that rich reddish hue, and the dish cabinet was too cool. I loved the leather as well.

The outside was gorgeous, and I liked the colors for the exterior as well. As I watched the episode a second time, I realized that not only was the landscaping attractive (I thought the gravel and stone walks a nice touch), it is going to be easy to maintain.

Biggest drawback: just the concept of bringing a man he hasn't seen in twenty years to his home. Did he write or e-mail his dad, and somewhat prepare the way? This just seemed so intensely personal to be put on television. It would be hard to be very honest with cameras in your face, especially about feelings that must be complicated.

Lesser drawback: the editing sucks. It is too choppy. The segment with Shawn Colvin did the singer no justice, and seemed gratuitous and too short. I'm missing some of the interactions between some of the guys and their subject, and it seems QE is getting filled with advertising as opposed to show.

The bits with Kyan were good, especially with the baby massage, and Jai showing Joe how to wrap a present seemed simplistic until it came to Joe having to wrap up the present himself.

Ted is going to have to have a checklist for each single guy: Can he open a bottle of wine? Does he know what part of the vegetable is edible and which to throw out? Can the single guy handle a knife with cutting off a vital biological bit of his anatomy?

Joe is a sweetheart. He has a sense of humor, is willing to try new things, is a most loving husband and father, and he didn't do too bad a job dressing himself against Carson's advice.

Hey! You know it. I am a fan of 60's 70's 80's rocksoulpop and dance. I just wish I had the nerve to hide his country/western sometimes.. If you get beyond the big blonde hair, the late Dusty Springfield is all Soul. He considers her Country. So she is perfect for us!

Was I being bad? I blame it on the media. All the images of religious dignitaries sprinkling blessings on the faithful.. and then I see a benediction of sorts here.

notevayas
PS. The Joe episode needs several viewings to appreciate. I look over my previous episode posts, and it's like.. no, that was a little different from how I perceived it then.. This show has layers, or maybe my short term memory is just shot to hell..
