Did the Fab Five earn their stripes with this special "make-better?" Discuss here.

It was a great episode. The house was fantastic.

I'm wondering about a song that appeared in the episode, though. When Hector was getting ready for the party before his fiance arrived, there was a song whose lyrics said something along the lines of "something kinda funny about a mask and the money," but I couldnt' find it on Google -- probably because I dont have the lyrics right. Please help!

Great episode, but I'm really not sure what the inspiration was to straighten Thom's hair; it looked awful.
Erin
Completely and totally awesome. Thanks to Bravo and Queer Eye for doing something so wonderful for Hector and his loved ones. A big thanks also for helping me to remember the people who are in the war and affected by it. And a big thank you to Hector for serving and protecting our country. Bless you - thank you. Truely.

Cabinets, closet, bikes were amazing! I hope someone with some bucks is getting that golfing cart for Hector! That was a great invention!

Enjoy life Hector!! Good luck to you and yours!
KCee
Very nice episode. I was in tears when his Marine buddy & the doctor showed up. I love it when Kyan, seeing that the straight guy doesn't need any help in the grooming department, sees what he REALLY needs. Getting Hector out of that basement, and re-introducing him to golf and bikes was just wonderful. Besides helping him physically, it'll help with the emotional healing also.

Loved, Loved, Loved what they did with the house to make it wheelchair friendly. The cabinet pull downs are just genius and mucho snaps for whoever invented them!

And, Hector's fiance is just wonderful! So supportative & so loving.

And, BTW, I liked Thom's straight hair. I've seen a couple of pics over the years where it's like that and I think it looks good. Perhaps it's just growing out and the weight is pulling out the curl.
tomasulo
You guys on this board are sooooo cute! Thom's hair is almost as much of a topic for discussion as the straight guy! Absolutely! I love it! Anyway snaps for the gentle, sensitive way the Fab 5 handled this episode. Hector was treated with the respect and love that we've come to expect from our guys. My heart aches for the victims and their families on all sides of this war. I wish Hector and Andrea every happiness in the future. BTW, how cute was Hector's mom?!?!?

Happy Birthday, Jai! (See, poopsie......even a die-hard Wife of Thom couldn't forget your day!!!)

Peace
luvsthom
You know tomasulo is right. Thom's hair is as much of a discussion as the show. I happen to like Thom's hair that way....even though I always love him in waves.... I've always said that my favorite episode with Thom is the Ross the marine episode and Thom's hair looked exactly like it did last night. I love it.....

Now on to the episode, I, too, just loved the way the boys were so sensitive and caring to the situation. I find it just incredible what can be done to a house to make it "wheelchair" accessible. And Thom did a fantastic job at arriving at that. As an aside, I must say that I just loved Carson in that grey suit...sexy as hell! Anyway, I loved Andrea, her support is humbling..., and the mother was a hoot! I loved her reaction when the boys came up the steps into the livingroom and she screamed....great!

All in all, I loved this episode, very loving, and sensitive. I, too, feel for the families and friends of soldiers, wherever they serve. I have a friend of mine who recently got married and was sent over to Afganistan. He hurried to get married, to make sure his wife was provided for, in case anything happened to him. They were husband and wife for 2 days before he went over, we had a big party for them before he went. Very emotional. (Sorry I didn't mean to waiver from the show).

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAI! (I am also a "wife" who can with our little latino boyfriend a happy day!!!)
tomasulo
Ooooh, Deb! Thank you for reminding me....Carson in that suit! Go ahead, Paris....say it....."That's hot!!".

Okay, usually I prefer the funny and racy eps to the "feel good" ones, but with this SG I felt like there was a real reason for it to be heartwarming. QE added some diversity to the SGs without it being too gimmicky. What a surprise it was having the war buddy and the doctor at the party. Um, I know this isn't very MGK-like of me, but when the doctor made his toast, my eyes were no longer dry. (Or am I just hormonal? Maybe some milk will help, according to the latest "Got Milk?" ads )

Kyan looked hot as hell with the 5 o'clock shadow that we haven't seen in a while and that nice bright blue shirt which really brought out his brown highlights. I dig men who play golf, so seeing Ky play drove me wild.

Of our boys, I was proudest of Ky (big surprise). He acted like a brother to the SG and gave him active things to do (adaptive golf and hand biking) to help him move on and get his self esteem back. That helps make up for the way Kyan gave the fiancee a head kiss and a hug. But she's a real class act (and was much more into her SG), so I forgive her.

In The Loft, Kyan's black shirt and jeans reminded me of what he wore the day I met him.
I couldn't believe the comment he made during the reveal about the brunette woman: "Now she's a hottie with a slamming body." Uh, Kyan, that episode must've been shot before you laid eyes on ME, or you wouldn't have said that about another woman! Oh well, at least his Hip Tip was helpful.

Ted's idea for the kitchen cabinet inserts and Carson's idea for the bedroom closet inserts were great and are good for the able-bodies as well.
Thom did an amazing job turning the couple's house into an inviting home.
The Loft looks great as well.

I'll bet Thom thinks the SG's mom is "Like buttuh!"

In Ted's Hip Tip, he told us the benefit of serving champagne in flutes to keep it bubbly. Note, take note: he also said it tickled. I wonder if the Tedster is into being tickled. (I LOVE being tickled - hint, hint, Kyan! )

notevayas adds...

I appreciated when Kyan sort of forestalled any platitudes at the end by emphasizing that nobody who has not lived through what these guys barely lived through can really understand.. Kyan has real class and depth.
As far as looks though, I think Kyan could stand to gain just a few pounds, His face looked too thin, and sorry, but sort of weasel-ish with his pointed chin and mouth full of teeth. No white strips this episode.. yaaay!
But I agree that Kyan helped the most by giving Hector more freedom. Driving is fine, but it could also be considered just moving around in a cage. Now he can load up the bikes, the beautiful fiance, and drive to any beautiful trail to experience nature and socialize. Cyclists are friendlier than the general public in my experience, and less likely to avoid Hector or treat him as an invalid. At the same time, they are more willing to help. When I had an accident on a trail, I was immediately surrounded by half a dozen strangers intent on making me comfortable and seeing if I was injured before letting me move!

I think it was priceless the look on Hectors face when Carson announced Pilar, his mother, was shopping with them. Hector immediately told Carson that his mother does not share his taste in clothes. Well, that was payback for not letting Carson kiss you, soldier!

I loved Pilar! It was funny how Carson referred to her problem with the "Home Shopping Network" after seeing her stored doll collection and her "ceramic masterbating hobo". But the lady has been through so much, and I liked how she said that the fiance was lucky as well to have her son!
And by the way her face lit up as she reached up to hug each of the Fab 5, I think we know who the BIG FAN was who called the show and campaigned for her son to be helped! Whatta Mom! And her husband was quiet and even more handsome than Hector. Hector doesn't have a thing to worry about getting older if he looks like his father! The fiance, sorry her name escapes me, had the most loving eyes. And I agree, my_guy_ky, she was a real class act! She is family already, and she doesn't social kiss. Each kiss to Hector had her heart and soul in it. Remember poor Adam Zalta? His wife pecked him on the cheek and acted like that was some big favor!

As for the guys, they did a great job! I won't pretend to love the house, but it was obvious Hector did! And his wife was overcome! To me, it lacked personality and reminded me too much of a tasteful restaurant or spa or other public place. And it was probably because Thom had to leave open corridors for the wheelchair! So nevermind me!

I liked how Hector insisted on choosing clothes that he felt comfortable wearing, and I appreciate Carson for not pushing his bright colors. I can only imagine how emasculating it must feel to lose so much independence and be relegated to a parent's basement! He had to wear what made him confident.

Jai did an excellent job with focusing Hector on his relationship and choosing thoughtful gifts. This was not a fiance who would scoff at sentiment and want jewelry. And sometimes men forget that quilts and photos are what make a relationship warm, as much as food and shelter.

Kyan, I already gave the most credit to, for giving Hector the ability to regain his confidence and independence through mobility and physical activity. And how thoughtful to give his fiance a bike that would let them be side by side!

Ted took over Carson's usual humor in this episode! Hector was giving Ted attitude and Ted gave it right back in fun. I don't think Hector will be using his chopping board very often! The cabinets were excellent for children also. No teetering on top of stepstools or kitchen chairs to get the cookie jar! Or cinnamon to make toast!

Finally, thanks my_guy_ky for reminding me of our shared story where I had Ted tied to the bed and was feeding him strawberries! I guess I will have to add in champagne, only I really don't like it all that much! I prefer beer. Did you see the beer commercial where the man is fantasying about being on a desert island with all his beer and two beautiful women and the women start bossing him and nagging at him! You can add that to your sexist "Got Milk" PMS commercial collection.
Great episode and great commercials.. especially the rollerskating shadow people on the I-Pod commercial! Wanna dance??

I loved this episode. They did such a wonderful job doing his house making it wheelchair friendly, and when Carson told Hector that he will walk again some day it just brought a tear to my eye.
You guys were right. Kyan is such a hottie oy vey, and lets not forget about Jai. His hair was sooo short and gorgeous it made me just wanna adopt him and take him home. BIG KUDOS for the FF.

I justgot home from the wedding which was spectacular, incidentally--Summer solstice, San Diego Harbor, Gaelic theme, watching a full moon rise as we cruised. But more of that later. Got home and the first thing I did was sit down, remove worn polish from toes and fingers and cry as I watched Hector and Andrea on my successful! videotape.
Once again the Fab 5 outdid themselves. This promises to be the most touching season yet with not only make-betters but with the heart and a serious message each time!
I'm not going to spend a lot of time on specifics tonight--I need to go to bed so I can get to work in the morning.
BUT the house was amazing! All the specially designed items for a house with a physically challenged person that I never knew existed!
And the focus on getting back into recreational activities--the bikes, the golf thingy--WOW.
Appreciated that Ted was involved in designing the kitchen rather than cooking this time--that was an excellent choice.
At first I questioned Jai's embroidery idea as a bit childish but it was perfect! And the hip tip about asking before you jump in and help was also right on.
Carson's clothes--loved them, and he's getting better about accepting the straight guys' choices when they don't follow his advice--snaps to CC.
That's it for now. Will read other comments tommorow and share more thoughts.
Missed you guys,
SLB _,,/

Welcome home, SLB! Congratulations to your family....it sounds like the wedding was lovely.

I watched this ep again yesterday and was touched (again!) by one of Kyan's comments during the reveal. He was spot on when he mentioned that we often focus on those individuals who have lost their lives in wars. I believe that translates to Hector and everyone who returns home with major injuries. I wouldn't presume to speak for Hector but he may feel that he lost the life he had envisioned for himself. His courage will continue to be tested but it appears to me that Hector and his family are up to the challenges.

Episode 202: HELP A SOLDIER BEGIN AGAIN ( HECTOR D.)

Dessert Bruschetta

I thought it would be fun for Hector and Andrea to do a dessert for the party. Since they are both into Italian food, I gave them a great recipe for a dessert bruschetta.

Cut strawberries into quarters. Take your sliced raisin and nut bread and toast it. Brush the bread with melted butter. Mascarpone cheese is cheese you would get in a cannoli. Well, take your mascarpone and add honey in it and mix it up in a bowl. Then take a smear of the cheese mixture and spread it on your sliced bread.

Add a teaspoon of chopped mint, and a tablespoon of honey to the bowl of chopped strawberries and mix it all up. The mint is for flavor but I don’t want you to use a ton of it because it will be too much. Take the strawberry mixture and top it on the toasted bread.

You did it again, guys! Actually the waterworks for me started when my guys Carson and Kyan were not even in the scene. It was when Ted and Thom were showing Hector how they did all these things in the kitchen to make it more accessible for him. The caring and thoughtfullness of the Fab 5 just gets me all misty-eyed.

Kyan with the bikes was wonderful-I had never seen bikes like those before! I loved it when the guys were all riding bike together! It reminded me of a Brady Bunch episode when Peter lost his job at the bike shop and they all were riding bikes down the street at the end. Carson mentions Jan Brady once in awhile he must be a fan too.
Oh and Kyan playing golf-well he tried! And that naughty talk Kyan gave before he swung the ball-I was fanning myself then!

Ohh Carson in that suit was very nice!
And I like it when Carson's hair looks like this and not the curls. And I agree with Note he is very nice in jeans and a tee also!

As for Kyan-I don't know if would call him weaselish but he does look thinner than in episodes from last year. I don't mind as long as he is healthy! And yea, the five o'clock shadow was back, yum!

Thom's hair I liked too-if anybody has the QE DVD that came with the soundtrack I really like his hair there which was like this.

I thought Jai's gift was thoughtful and unique. But with my sewing phobia I would be handing the work to someone else!

Ted's dessert looked delicious! I liked how he gave it back to Hector too in the kitchen. Ted can be sassy too!

And Pilar meeting the guys-yes I think also she was the one who called! I can only imagine if that were me and each one of the guys was coming up my stairs one at a time-ooh Lord-I'd be hugging away like her too! Hope she got ahold of Kyan too cause that's the only one I didn't see her hug as for me well he would be the first!

Looks like a return to form next week with a very helpless SG.

Female Troops Face Hostile Fire in Iraq
By FRANK GRIFFITHS, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The lethal ambush of a convoy carrying female U.S. troops in Fallujah underscored the difficulties of keeping women away from the front lines in a war where such boundaries are far from clear-cut.

The suicide car bomb and ensuing small-arms fire killed at least two Marines and four others were missing and presumed dead. At least one woman was killed and 11 of 13 wounded were female.

The ambush late Thursday also suggested Iraqi insurgents may have regained a foothold in Fallujah, which has been occupied by U.S. and Iraqi forces since they regained control of the restive city from insurgents seven months ago.

The women were part of a team of Marines assigned to various checkpoints around Fallujah. The Marines use females at the checkpoints to search Muslim women "in order to be respectful of Iraqi cultural sensitivities," a military statement said. It is considered insulting for men to search female Muslims.

The terror group al-Qaida in Iraq claimed it carried out the ambush, one of the single deadliest attacks against the Marines — and against women — in this country. The high number of female casualties spoke to the lack of any real front lines in Iraq, where U.S. troops are battling a raging insurgency and American women soldiers have taken part in more close-quarters combat than in any previous military conflict.

"It's hard to stop suicide bombers, and it's hard to stop these people that in many cases are being smuggled into Iraq from outside Iraq," President Bush said at a joint White House news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on Friday.

Current Pentagon policy prohibits women from serving in front line combat roles — in the infantry, armor or artillery, for example. But an increasing number of female troops have been exposed to hostile fire.

Thirty-six female troops have died since the war began, including the one that was announced Friday, said Maj. Michael Shavers, a Pentagon spokesman. Thirty-four were Army, one Navy and one Marine. Most have died from hostile fire.

More than 11,000 women are serving in Iraq, part of 138,000 U.S. troops in the country, said Staff Sgt. Don Dees, a U.S. military spokesman.

Thursday's attack may have been the single largest involving female U.S. service members since a Japanese suicide pilot slammed his plane into the USS Comfort near the Philippines in 1945, killing six Army nurses, according to figures from the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation.

Three Army women were among 28 U.S. troops who died during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 when a Scud missile struck a Marine barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, the Washington-based foundation said on its Web site. The three were among a total of 16 women who died in Desert Storm. Four were killed by hostile fire.

One woman was listed as killed in action during the Vietnam War, two women died in the USS Cole bombing in 2000 and eight military women died at the Pentagon during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the foundation said.

OK. My news sources are tv, public radio, internet and a few blogs, and I am reading a total lack of outrage over this in my generation especially. Are we still frozen over the photographs of the tortured and/or dead Iraqi Prisoners of War? Can't we muster up a little outrage over our own American women being used as cannon fodder along with men? Or is the problem that in the so-called "volunteer" Army/Navy/AirForce/Marines, the women are not the fairest of America's daughters?
Sojourner Truth said "Am I not a woman?" It is not disrespectful to woman's contributions in military service to insist that women are not deployed as sitting ducks for exploitation by the enemy. I pray that the missing in action are found soon. It is not sexist to give women the merest priority whatever their status in life. They were there to give Iraqi women consideration after all.

Otherwise what are we fighting for? Oil?

notevayas
notevayas
Just in case it is not clear, I meant the figurative "we". My point is that "we" are not doing the fighting and suffering and dying. "They" are. And as long as the "we" is separate from the "they" there will be less thought put into how this war is conducted, and how we can plan an endgame and get the most troops home safely.

I'm quoting myself.....(what a dweeb!)....because after watching this ep for the fourth....fifth?....time, I realized I wrongly attributed the remark about "lost lives" to Kyan. In fact, it was said by my beloved, Thom!!! Good Ghod, how could I get that wrong?!?!?! Please forgive me, Thom...I'm begging you....I'm on my knees......(okay, let's not go there, folks....I know what you're thinking....let's try to keep this PG rated!)

I only saw part of the reveal. It was taped on a defective tape. (It's old) I was SOOOO mad. I was misty eyed through out the episode. I loved how Hector told Carson to get out when he tried to get a kiss out of him in the beginning. I thought the pull down cupboards and especially the pull down closet racks were very cool.

I hate what they have done to the intro music. I was hoping that it was a one episode thing. There was nothing wrong with it the last two season. I think they ruined a perfectly good song.
musichelp2002
The song is a remix of Carmella by Beth Orton. I'm pretty sure it's the one that is available for purchase off of iTunes if you buy the entire album entitled: The Other Side of Daybreak. I have the album and will check tonight to be sure.

I totally agree with you about the theme song.

Some second thoughts about this ep:

Snaps for the Thomasville furniture....I love the Ernest Hemingway collection! Gorgeous!

More tears (even the fifth time around) when Hector presents Andrea with the embroidered handkerchief because her dad won't be at their wedding. My daughter often feels the pain of realizing that her dad won't be there to walk her down the aisle when she gets married someday. Every celebration is bittersweet after the loss of a loved one.

BTW, I've probably said this after every episode where the SG is engaged, but THIS is the wedding I would love to see. How about it, Fab 5?

And how amazing was the toast that his Marine buddy made?!?! "The man I knew then is still standing before me." Wow....you absolutely nailed it.....Hector stands tall and proud.

Same song, different parts. And it's been shortened.

I miss the cell phone-look up deal. That was awesome.

Yep, I also liked THOMY's hair in the ROSS M. eppy. Gotta have that babyfaced THOMY

I absolutely loved this episode with Hector, fiance, family, and friends. His mother was precious!!! The make-better was awesome!!! I think it's wonderful that the FF did something so special for someone that performed a great service for our country!! Hector deserved to have something special happen to him, besides having such a wonderful fiance to look forward to marrying in the near future!! Great job guys and good luck Hector!!!

I saw this episode and I wanted to ask a question. I'm physically handicapped and since my accident I haven't being able to do the things I used to before. When I saw this episode I was motivated and encourage again. I do want to know where they found the bicycles for hector and his fiance. I cannot ride a bicycle anymore and it was one of my passions and hobbies. Also I want my husband to enjoy and cherish what I used to like to do before my accident. Please does anyone knows where I can find and pourchsed thes two bicyles they guys gave to Hector and his fiance? It is really important to me to find them because I know it will give a new meaning to my life now. Please if anyone have a clue where to find them email me at rcsmith777@yahoo.com

I loved the music during the opening in previous seasons. The current intro has lost the catchy, get-off-the-couch-and-dance feel. Can we hope they'll improve it in the future?

Today I saw this episode for the first time. I felt the need to e-mail the Fab5 but couldn't find where on the site. Since what I need to say has to do with this episode I hope all don't mind my little interuption.

On September 15, it will be my husband's 25th anniversary of his accident when he slammed into a tree at 30 mph with his body. Just like Hector he jigsaw puzzled his pelvis. When he did this he was just starting college and had his whole future ahead of him. The doctors told his family he had 10% chance of living. When he came out of his coma, he was told he would never walk again. Within 5 years, the man was walking without a cane and graduating from college with his degree. I didn't meet him untill just 2 years ago. From the time he graduated from college untill now he has toured the world, played wheelchair basketball on a team that went to the nationals and achieved every goal he set for himself before the accident including currently working on his doctorate in Computer Science. When I watched the show, I got this feeling from it that Hector might not feel as if he can still achieve all his dreams. I just want him to know, if there is a way to tell him, that he can do anything he sets his mind to. Including walking without pain, reaching the perverbial brass ring and letting nothing stop him along the way.

Thank you for letting me post here. I hope that some day Hector's wife can post a special message to someone else that has been through what our men have with encouragement.

P.S. The night I meet my husband I didn't even realize he was paralized on his right leg, I thought he just had this amazing swagger to his walk. LOL

Cheers to all! Have a great time reaching for your brass ring.

Thank you for your post gregsbrat. One of the regular posters here, KCee, posted a link to a great video interview by Kyan Douglas who explains why working on Queer Eye is so meaningful to him. You can find it at http://www.outindenver.org/
If you can't download it, I recapped it on CARSONKRESSLEY.COM on the Forum.

A swagger eh? Well, my guy did have a swagger, but now it's mostly arthritis.. He has a collection of swagger sticks with dual purposes (never put to use!). One has an umbrella inside, one a rapier sword, one a vial for spirits.. He rarely uses them, but they fill the umbrella stand and look cool.

It's so great to read a post with someone bragging on their guy instead of complaining complaining that he is sloppy or doesn't wear the latest styles. I applaud your priorities!
