This one sets the bar for "feel good" episodes....our Fab 5 really kicked it up a notch with this Fab Family. Snaps, kudos, hugs and kisses to Lee and Elaine for opening their home to those wonderful kids. At the end, when Thom asks little Destiny, "Are you gonna miss me?", what we really hear is Thom saying HE'S going to miss her. And how thoughtful and touching of Thom to remember to tell Jessica (I hope I got the name right) to have fun at college. Thom has such patience and energy with kids and he knows how important it is to motivate them and remind them that having fun is an absolute necessity in life. And as if I haven't said quite enough about Thom, how hot did he look during the Hip Tip wearing that doctor's coat?!?!? You know, that reminds me, I haven't had a physical in awhile!

Ooh, ooh do I get to be first?
The things I liked most about this show were: Kyan's advising the teens about acne and flossing as well as shaving. See, Kyan, if you get them young enough maybe you can teach them to shave *with* the grain! And NO white strips! Loved the demonstration of flossing as well.
Ted's helping the kids with a cake--don't make it, just decorate it. Great idea to augment a cake with a styrofoam layer. What happens at a wedding where everyone isn't clued in?
Jai's heart to heart talks with the kids. Also his wanting to be adopted into the family.
Thom's decorating, as always. But he was really having fun with the kids and everyone at Target.
Just the fact that the whole family invaded Target was great! Sorta like the Ray episode where they went to Penney's. It shows that it's not always all about extravagent spending--more like learning to spend on the budget you have as a family and find really good things.
Carson's fashion sense with the kids. He let them do their own thing with some guidance. And the advice about baggy clothing rather than well fit (not tight!) was also extremely good advice for kids to get and begin to practice.
This time I also liked the plasma TV--an appropriate gift to a family.
Jai's gifts of Apple notebooks (or whatever they are called) for the daughter going away to school and to Lee. His encouragement to Lee to work on his dyslexia. That subject came up a couple of times and if Lee hadn't been such a great guy in so many ways it coulda seemed like an excuse for him. Jai didn't let him dwell on his lack but encouraged him to overcome it.
Things I didn't like? Maybe the 'we love you, dad' theme on both the cake and the banner--the guys could have gotten a little more creative with the words that expressed that love.
Over all a great feel good show--honest tears (if you have been watching Blow Out (my vice I'm ashamed to admit) you'll know what I mean); huge amounts of love and appreciation for Lee and Elaine; cute kids with good interaction between them and the FF. Thom as always was amazing with the kids but Kyan and Ted really came into their own on this show as well.
Cheers,

Wow, after that last experience with Jim B., I thought we would finally have a message board without controversy...but I was wrong. (Could someone please give me a hand dragging out my soap box?) My son has dyslexia and I watched him struggle through every grade of school until he graduated. Homework that took other students an hour to do, took him 2 hours to do. Although his high school offered special classes, Mark never took those classes because he didn't want to be labeled as having a learning disability. He sweated, cried, and fought for 4 years to maintain a C average so he could remain on swim team, but occasionally when his dyslexia would become apparent because of his frustration, some teacher would suggest it was an "excuse". I suppose there are occasions when this happens, but I've seen the other side by watching my son's brave efforts. It didn't appear to me that Lee was using, or needed to use, any kind of excuse. His success as a husband, a father, and a human being speaks volumes for his hard work, dedication, and love.
witchgirl
I thought it was kinda mean of Lee and Elaine to laugh at Michael's clothes.
raindog
WELL, I wasn't so thrilled about another "feel good" one, since I'm partial to the hilarious messy slob ones - but I liked this one a lot. It was "feel good" without being soppy. The kids were fantastic - so-called "normal" families rarely have such well-mannered, mature, thoughtful kids. Lee and Elaine are my new heroes.

I do hope they will find time for themselves more often, though. Get the older kids to babysit, guys!

On a total side note - whoever updates Bravo's website needs to pay a little more attention to their grammar.

"With all the craziness of having to take care of nine kids, Lee and his wife hardly has time for themselves or even focus on themselves."

I mean…dudes. REALLY.
tomasulo
I agree with raindog...Lee and Elaine should definitely have some "alone" dates. Although, I am glad they did the skating thing so Lee could show off his talent. When I lived in Venice, seeing such gifted skaters on the boardwalk was something I always enjoyed....I had forgotten how much I miss that.

Lee reminded me of my father, who I'm certain is dyslexic. He dropped out of school in fifth grade, and can barely read. But he can build/fix absolutely anything. He once built this elaborate deck with steps and a number of levels going down the hill in our front yard, with NO plans. Just went outside and built it. He’s in his late 70s so I don’t think anyone even knew there was such a thing as dyslexia back then. But Lee’s talents reminded me of him.

That must have been really awful for your son, tomasulo, and for you too. Good for him for being so successful! I’ve suspected my younger brother is dyslexic too, and even in the late 1970s he wasn’t diagnosed – just labeled a slow learner.
tomasulo
raindog: It was difficult for my son but we usually handled it with humor. Just before graduation, the school called me to tell me Mark wouldn't be able to participate in the ceremony because he hadn't returned two library books. I was so excited....I yelled to Mark, "Oh my god, you checked out books from the library?!?!" and he said, "The school has a library?". Eventually we all realized someone had checked out books using his name, but Mark's dad and I had a good laugh about it. And, like your dad, Mark put together a remote control dune buggy in half the time as it took his best friend....and he hadn't looked at the instructions once. When he graduated, it was a celebration as well as an "in your face" moment to many people who had doubted he'd be able to do it.

Oh, Tomasula please forgive me--I never meant my comment to be negative and I certainly never thought Lee was making an excuse. I too have a working knowledge of dyslexia and the frustration it causes, fortunately for me not personally but as I worked in the school system with special needs students with a variety of learning challenges not the least of which was deafness.
I am terribly sorry if I came across as insensitive. My feeling was gratitude that Jai offered Lee encouragement to overcome the dyslexia even as an adult.
Please accept my apologies, anyone who was offended by my comment.

SLB: No need for apologies ("love means never having to say you're sorry" ). I almost didn't reply at all because I know you are in the education field and I know you well enough to know you would never hurt anyone's feelings. My bad if I was being oversensitive (this is day 2 of being on the Jenny Craig program....I might be a little cranky). I jumped on the word "excuse", but I could tell from your post that you liked and respected Lee and his efforts on behalf of his family as much as I did. It's all good, sweetie.

From this message board to Ghod's ears! I would love to lose 40 lbs by September just in case someone.....(subliminal message: Thom).....asks me to walk the red carpet with him....(subliminal message: Thom).....at the Emmy awards.

Joan Rivers: Thom Filicia....um...is this your date?
Thom: Well...uh.....not really...but she's been following me since I got out of the limo...so....well...I guess so.
Joan Rivers: Who are you wearing?
Tomasulo: Target
Joan Rivers: And that's an interesting evening bag.
Tomasulo: Oh, that's just a plastic grocery bag.....so I could discreetly bring my screenplay.

Don't get your hopes up; he's most likely bringing his boyfriend. Anyways, I'd like to lose 70 pounds, but for now I'd be happy if I'd just stop gaining.

I like Target too. I wish they would stage a coup and overturn the WalMart empire. I bought one of my favorite shirts at Target for $10 and get compliments on it every time I wear it. It was nice to see Carson advocating clothes that don't cost more than my monthly rent!

I really thought it was so funny when THOMMY was trying to put white frosting on Jai. And when he was in Target driving the mobile cart and saying..."there you go"

Of course, I had to mention, "are you going to miss me"

(Oops....I need to quote my own quote.) It was Marisa who was going off to college....not Jessica. Sorry for the boo boo.

I like shopping at Target no. Much better than Walmart, you too?

I honestly could not make up my mind how I felt about Ted's unshaven look. Sometimes I thought it was scruffy and hot looking, but at times I just wanted to reach for the Neosporin for fear of "beard rash".....oh, com'on now...don't pretend you don't know what I mean! Is this the beginning of a real beard or is it the style? I'm kind of surprised that I hadn't seen any posts about it and I'm curious what the Teddy Grahams think about this new look.

I wasn't wild about it myself, but I'm not a big fan of the scruffy-face-thing. To me, it just makes people look tired. Can't imagine Ted with an actual beard, either - don't do that, Ted!!

I generally loathe the "feel good" shows, but this was a subdued, but enjoyable one. It didn't come off as a sensationlistic show for ratings like the soldier ones, but there was a geniune feeling that this family was chosen simply because Patrick deserved to be honored, and he does. Not to mention, the kids were so darned likable, who wouldn't want to see this family get the Fab 5 treatment?

I hope that this will inspire people to consider fostering children; in every state the system is clogged with children, many who are also available for adoption. Not a year goes by that I don't have children in my class for whom a loving family has made all the difference in their lives. One of my students this year managed to "beat the odds" by not only being the first person in her family to graduate from high school, but also received a full scholarship to college, thanks to a retired couple who thought they were finished raising kids, but took her into their home instead.

Okay, I'm stepping off the soap box now. : )

I love Thom's hair when it flops down on his forehead. I just want to reach through the t.v. screen and push it back and off his forehead, *~~ and maybe let my hand slip to his chest to unbutton one of his shirt buttons, then let my hand wander down toward his pant's belt buckle and then....*~~

Remember at the last Emmy awards when Thom leaned across Greg C. to hug Carson but never hugged Greg? I can tell you right now, that won't happen if they win again this year and I'm his date. Deb: "Well Judy, after you."

Hey Judy, what time are we picking up the big guy on Emmy night? And by the way, what are you wearing?

Now I'm sitting at my desk laughing out loud....(did I just hear someone say, "doesn't Tomasulo ever do any work?"....who was that?...com'on, who said that?...oh...I think it was my boss....good lord, what's she doing here?!?)
Anyhoo....Deb, as anyone who's anyone knows, the question is "WHO are you wearing?....not WHAT are you wearing?" Except in my case where they might ask "What are you wearing?....no, I mean, really, what the hell is that?" I'm thinking of borrowing a dress from Calista Flockhart....I definitely plan on being a size 1 by September so I don't see any problem there. And for you, dear, why don't we ask Bjork if she can lend you that little swan dress she wore awhile back. The one that put her on everyone's Worst Dressed list. Don't worry about that....I'm sure it will look just fine on you. And if it turns out that Thom's just a little embarrassed to be seen with you in that little number....well, no worries, you can always follow us to the after party in a separate car and sit at a table near us.

Yeah, it's a running joke with my friends that for some reason I can NEVER remember the SGs' names. I was honestly standing in front of one of them I met once, praying someone would come up and say his name, cause I sure couldn't remember it. I watched this ep for the third time yesterday and realized I had more to say......(More?...no, not you, Tomasulo!)

Snaps to Cindy for her great "model" attitude....I think she'd make a great model, but she also had great verbal eloquence (uh oh...I think that might be redundant....raindog?). Thom, that window seat was to die for! I've always wanted a window seat where I could curl up and read with great natural light. Of course, I wouldn't have that fabulous view of the snowy park.....oh man, I'm so jealous! It's 100+ here in southern California but looking at that snow gave me a flashback to what it felt like to walk across the ground with the snow making that fantastic crunching sound. Lee and Elaine, how would you like a visitor next winter? Thom was too cute when he was carefully trying to "rescue" Jessica with a spoon after he overfilled her mouth with frosting. She was a good sport. And if Jessica felt like she didn't have many "dad stories" yet when the kids were making the banner with Kyan, I wanted to tell her, you will soon, Pumpkin. Jessica and the others may feel like they weren't born lucky, but I think their luck has changed thanks to Lee and Elaine.

I've always wanted a window seat too - I also had visions of a cozy reading marathon. Except... not the snow. It snows too much here, so I was going "Ewwwww!!! Snow!!! Ick ick ick!!!" I want to come to sunny 100s California. It has been in the 80s here, which is unusual. And nice. To me.

Jessica and the others may feel like they weren't born lucky, but I think their luck has changed thanks to Lee and Elaine.

I know - they are the luckiest kids ever. I wanted them to adopt me! Sometimes I think Bravo goes a little overboard in showering the straight guys with stuff, but not with this one.

And the best part is, the kids look like they appreciate Lee and Elaine and their home. Jessica even seemed like she's still a little dazed and surprised....I can only imagine some of the situations many of the kids have come from. (I ended that sentence with a preposition.....that's a no no, isn't it?....raindog is really keeping me on my toes!)

Okay, I liked Grizzly Allen too- sexy! but this is coming from a fan of Shadowman Douglas!

I agree this was a feel good episode. I just loved Lee and his family. Obviously him and his wife have done a wonderful job with those children!

The trip to Target was great! This is where I do alot of shopping so it was so cool to see the guys shopping in aisles where I have gone myself. I also enjoyed seeing them tooling around in the motorized carts-surprised they didn't have Ted in one but ahem "Grandpa" as the boys like to call him was walking around shopping in a regular cart-yea Ted!

As for Kyan and that shaving cream-I would of offered to shave that mustache area off for him-ya I just said this after my first line here where I said I liked it when he's sporting the shadow! I did chuckle when he still had the shaving cream on when he was demonstrating how to floss to the kids.

The banner and the cake they made for Lee was great too. Having the kids do the writing on both items made it all that more special.

Thom great job on the house-I'd be shedding tears too!

Again great episode-need more people like Lee and his wife in this world.

I adored it that Destiny(was it??) and THOM were so buddies, he was carrying her and she was on his shoulders. And when he was so silly putting her in the trash containter @ Target.
